- if you’ve been following iPhones for a while, you may’ve noticed a trend. Because back in 2012, the brand new iPhone 5 started at $200. While today, the current flagship iPhone starts at $1,000. So what happened in the last few years that made iPhones costs $800 more than they did just six years ago? Well we’re going to dig into the numbers now and find out.
So for the sake of this video, we’re going to be comparing the base model flagship iPhone 5 released back in 2012, and the 64GB iPhone X from 2017. I chose last year’s model just because it’s close enough to this year’s iPhone XS, but there’s more data on sales, materials, components, and a year’s worth of insight on how the phone is manufactured.

Shagg Meister As much as I would agree with you with most of the comment, I would have to disagree with buying a phone like an iPhone XS if they want to. With that mindset, that would be like saying there’s no reason to buy a Samsung Galaxy Note 9, which there plenty of reasons to do so. Now the iPhone XR on the other hand? I agree with you more there. I mean a display that’s bigger than the IPhone Plus models, but has a lower resolution and PPI than those phones? And with no 3D Touch either? That’s just unacceptable.

If you're familiar with iPhone, I recommend the XR, if you're thinking of switching to an Android smartdevice, I would choose Huawei with their latest version as a manufacturer, if not, I recommend Samsung as a secondary.

In reality, its just a new iteration of the high-quality LCDs Apple is already known for. Just like how the original usage of the "retina display" was marketing jargon to sell said high-quality LCDs. (In short retina displays, liquid retina displays, and LCDs are all the same)
Well I’m pleased at the moment with my “Retina display “ is one of the best in the market plus is the phone with the most colour accurate display in the industry. I’ll stick to that than oversaturation as a graphic designer.

Retina is their brand on 326 ppi or higher, but their LCD displays has gotten better over the years, the Xr is supposed to be the brightest LCD ever on an iPhone. I do agree that given it more silly names is just silly...

I have had my 6s Plus for over 3 years and it was stable and solid. Recently I bought an iPhone Xs, cost more but I’m still satisfied.

I have to admit, my opinion of Apples value has gone down over the last few years. But it's not really due to their hardware. I just realized that I'm not really using most of their ecosystem. I used Chrome on my iPhone instead of Safari, Google Maps instead of Apple Maps, I never used my icloud email for anything, I uploaded all my photos to google photo due to it being far more user friendly and compatible with my PC. I never touched Apples file system and instead use Google Drive. So after awhile it stopped making sense for me to be having all of these Google applications on an iOS device.
I mean most of us don't use the pre-installed web explorers. I'll admit that the only time i've used safari was when a app took me to their website through safari but that's the only time.
Mercury I used to be all google and supported that ecosystem and was looking forward to the chrome OS and google devices like chrome books and the google glass. but that’s before I discovered Apple and slowly moved into the ecosystem. Safari, iCloud, mail, iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods, Apple Music, it all work great together.

Even if my home button &/or power button broke, I’d still not buy a new one. I’d exit the apps by asking Siri to switch to another app & plug in a charger to turn it on (I’d turn it off rarely) & it’ll turn off automatically.

Great opinion piece. I personally think you missed the mark on a lot of points though. For one, older generations of iPhone will always be cheaper with the release of each new iteration of the iPhone due to components prices decreasing and the most obvious point that people won't pay a premium for old technology in any case.
In the case of the iPhone SE, the reason it was priced as low as it was was because of its rather small form factor in large screen dominated market, it's rather outdated design (based on the then 3-year old 5S) and it's positioning as Apple's entry level model. The iPhone X selling more units than it's predecessors and SE has nothing to do with customers willnesses to pay more for premium components and has everything to do with consumers natural disposition for purchasing the lastest and best offerings. That goes for products in general. A new release hardly translates to higher sales of an older iteration of the same product.
Hence why I think using the angle that customers are simply willing to pay higher premiums for Apple products is woeful thinking in that it perpetuates the notion that Apple consumers are hardly bothered or deterred by exorbitant prices.
The Note series of phones are meant to be Samsung's halo offering in that they've always been the most expensive handset you can purchase from them. It's not meant to be their core offering, it's for power users hence it always packs an excessive spec list and large functionality so the comparison for me doesn't make sense, especially since it still undercuts the price of the iPhone gen-for-gen. Samsung's flagship line is the S series with the A, J, Z and other lines falling under that so choosing the most expensive offering from a brand to justify the base offering of another isn't exactly what I'd consider a fair comparison.
I also find the statement that you're paying for a device with longevity to be reaching just a bit. No company with an annual release schedule hopes for its target consumer base to refrain from purchasing it's latest offering. Planned obsolescence might not be a widely accepted concept but it does it exist and for the sole purpose to drive sales.
Overall it should be said that the price you pay for a new iPhone isn't always rational and justifiable but it's clearing a marketing formula that deserves appreciation.

The SE sold 30 million units. I wouldn't call it a failure, Apple just didnt want to spend the R&D to design a new one. They just lowered the price of the iPhone 7 to $449 to make it the truly budget offering

You demonsrated well that the cost is not about value, its about luxury. People want BMWs for the same reason. Often, the brand is a means of projecting an image. Few people really know how one brand (or model) compares to another. Nothing against Apple/BMW, I just happen to like Samsung/Audi. I drive a Mazda though. It's a better value.

I was thinking of that too. As much as I wanted to try an iPhone, it's cost is same or higher than the Macbook Air here in the Philippines. Moreover, the iPad has cheaper options from what I observed from the Apple store here in my country.

This was the single biggest annoyance of this video. I seem to recall the announcement for that phone claim that 30 million people bought 4 inch phones that year. Surely the demand is still there. I personally own an SE and love having the ability to charge my phone and listen to music. More importantly not feel like I have an ipad in my hand. Most just buy bigger screens because thats all thats available.
Very true. Just a couple days ago a friend of mine noticed how small my SE was compared to her iPhone X. "I'd love to have a smaller phone like yours."
I'm still hoping that at some point Apple will give us an updated SE, or at least a similar kind of small sized but powerful phone. Until then, I'm definitely not gonna switch to one of those ridiculously huge bricks.
I personally immediately went out and purchased a SECOND 128GB SE as a backup incase my main phone craps out. Literally 24hrs after I did that, its sold out on every major mobile companys website. I refuse to pay a premium for less features in a phone than I have now (headphone jack, home button, etc). I'm a minority but theres still plenty of people upset the SE left.
I bought the SE because it was cheap and packed with some tech like the iphone 6 but cheaper and smaller.

There is something I honestly do not understand and I hope someone can clarify this for me. Both the iPhone XS and Note 9 start at $999, however in Kuwait the Note 9 is being sold for 285 KD vs the iPhone XS being sold for 349 KD. That is just over a $200 difference! How is this possible?

It's liquid retina because of the rounded corners and curves in the notch. Cutting LCD to get pixel perfect curves is very expensive. Since iPhone XS and XS Max have oled panels which have better display characteristics all things considered, they call it Super Retina.
Tushar Vazirani You’re completely missing his point. “Liquid Retina” doesn’t mean anything, and certainly has nothing to do with the actual display itself. Creating curved glass isn’t that difficult compared to a lot of other manufacturing processes. Apple constantly tries to complicate tech terminology to make it look like new breakthrough tech, when in fact “Super Retina” is simply just a display that has more than 326ppi, something that other manufacturers have been offering for the last five years. It’s clever marketing on Apple’s part, but only to people who don’t even know what OLED is to begin with...

Apparently, the iPhone X having a *64%* profit margin is only worth being talked about for all of ten seconds in a video about why they're expensive. You know, $640 of the $999 phone. Meanwhile, it's defeated by 18 Android phones in AnTuTu, five of which cost less than $500 and one of which, namely the Pocophone F1, costs around $310, with duty free shipping to the EU for around $26.
Apple has never been cheap; they have high product margins on anything and everything they sell, and enough of their fans and costumers don't care. The same goes for most other electronics manufacturers. Why do you think you have to pay $300+ to repair your liquid-damaged MBP and not even getting to keep whatever's on your SSD? Because Apple is pressuring their consumers in every way possible to make them buy AppleCare and iCloud subscriptions, so they can make even more money on their own poorly designed (internals-wise) products. Hell, even my old $200 netbook from 2006 was more waterproof than an MBP.
In my book, Xiaomi's better than Apple in every way. On specs, on warranty, on how they're not wasting billions on marketing, and on their business practices as a whole.
I'm keeping my 6s since I bought it back in Oct. 2015. I typically keep low power mode on to keep battery usage down. The thing is, I've kept Ios 10.3.3 since I saw stories that later versions made battery usage even worse (and this is the original battery). If anyone has reliable info on battery usage for Ios 12, let me know and I'll download the later Ios if battery usage is manageable.
iOS 12 works great on older iPhones, and also uses considerably less battery than iOS 11 did. I'd suggest you to upgrade to get some extra year or two out of your phone.

R&D, fixed costs, salaries, manufacturing-production, royalties, marketing, taxes and other costs bring that down margin down quite a bit from 64%.

teetehi T thanks, I’m not really sure yet what’s the best option, and since the Xr costs about 1000 USD in Sweden it’s hard. But I think that both of the phones will do good, and because I’m still using the 5c both will be a good upgrade. And since the new Xr has the A12 chip and maybe some new features it may be the best option. But the X also have some parts that’s better, so it’s a hard choice..

It's funny cause when I was a kid, the price tag for phones always seemed like $1000 to me when they were really only a few hundred dollars, but that's a lot when you're a kid. Now that I'm older, and have money of my own, phones are literally $1000 dollars.

Even if what you say here explains why their phones are getting more expensive, how does that explain them not including stuff like the lightning to headphone adapter and a bigger power supply in the iPhone XS and XS Max? I mean the Galaxy Note 9 starts at the same price as the X and XS now and that one starts with a bigger storage option, an actual fast charger, a HEADPHONE JACK in the phone, and many others things. They may have done well with making a powerful feature filled device, but they don’t bother to include the accessories needed to use some of the feature

With a phone like this costing this much, both manufacturing wise and in regards to the parts for the phone, the LEAST they could’ve done is either provide us with such accessories right from the get go or even include the AirPods right in the box if they’re so bent on heading towards that wireless future they had their minds set on! I mean even freaking HONOR was generous enough to include such things. I mean yeah, it’s lower priced and probably had lower specs in comparison to the Note 9, but Honor was generous enough to provide a case for their phones in the box. Something neither Samsung nor Apple does.

Yes it doesn’t come with a headphone jack to lighting but ... a good majority of the market uses wireless headphones. You can by dongles for less than 10 bucks. Again you will be fine.
Also AirPods aren’t something thing need to include yet, it’s like trying to wean a baby, it’s not gonna happen instantly. That’s not how technology works, it’s one step at time. We will soon get wireless headphones in the boxes but not anytime soon. So in the mean time, Apple provides you with headphones.

Oh, come off it. The iPhone X costs $370 to produce and was sold for $999 which results in $629 of revenue. The iPhone 5 on the other hand cost about $207 to manufactur and was being sold for $649 which leads to $649 which leads to $442 of revenue. These figures might not be 100% accurate (taxes, Inflation, etc.) but should give you a good idea of how much revenue Apple was making per iPhone back then compared to today.
The primars reason why iPhones (and other phones as well) have become so expensive is because people are willing to pay so much money for a phone from a well-etablished brand like Apple.

It seems many Iphone purchasers want improved experiences, while I want good experiences, not necessarily the best. I prefer a phone meets my needs at an affordable price so I don't have to worry if it is broken, lost, etc. The last phone I had was super cheap budget phone (samsung galaxy j3). While great value for the cost ($60 certified pre-owned), I was wanting better camera and faster performance after a while. I bought a galaxy s7 edge to replace it.
I can understand people buying the more expensive phones better now. I am surprised more people are purchasing them outright. I thought people would be doing the payments and justifying the high price by rationalizing their phone is worth $30-40 per month.

So yes the company is a joke, they play on the fact that people will blindly buy products based on brand loyalty, and people do. I wanna know why USA is one of the wealthiest countries with the richest citizens yet have the cheapest iPhone prices in the world. Tax/transport etc doesn't explain the huge (& increasing!) price discrepancy between USA vs Canada/UK etc. It's a very deliberate long-term strategy of Apple, and I can't work out why. Especially with component shortages causing shrinking margins, why are you selling iPhones so cheap when its been proven that they easily sell for the equivalent of 38-68% higher ($1600 base model in EU) in similar wealth countries? No economic sense.
When people complain that the $999 X’s components only cost $370, the article stated the A11 chip costs $27. Where can I buy a 7th generation i7 processor for $27; they were $300. Apple charged 60% markup, not counting R&D, marketing, and legal fees. That does not sound too much. Bluetooth speakers around me were probably marked up 2,000%.
The final line here is that Apple overcharge for their devices. Plain and simple. Many technology companies do, not just Apple, as the market will eat it up. The iPhone costs between $300-$400 to manufacture, and they're being sold at $1000. $600-$700 profit, which would more than cover any R&D / licencing costs considering the volume at which these are produced. Apple could very well charge less and still make up all of their costs AND make a profit on the device, which would far outsell any competing phone due to the premium specs and lower price point. But hey ho, they're going to keep making expensive phones and Apple fanboys will keep purchasing them and keep trying to justify what they're producing just because it's Apple.

Iphone X user in 2024. Finally starting to give me issues more frequently. Yesterday it kept randomly crashing and bootlooping over and over each time i swiped to homescreen after unlocking. Then it fixed itself, working fine now. Upgrading soon. Its had a good long life but its time to lay it to rest✌🏻

Why is everyone saying, that the display of the XR is worse than the displays of the older iPhones like 7 or SE? It's definitely NOT worse. It has the same ppi as every iPhone between the 4 and the 8, it has better colors and it has as little bezels as possible with an LCD display.
I also admit, that Apple could have included a 1080p display, but it's not worse than in the last years.

The old verizon model was 40 per month of the bill going to subsidize the phone. So 199 out the door. Then 2 years at 40 per month for 960. So total of 1,259$ paid for your 650 dollar phone. Few people were also aware that after your true years was up if you didn't upgrade your phone you could actually ask to have your bill reduced by $40. So many people were paying an additional $40 for months before they finally decided to upgrade their phone because they were unaware of this. The best part is when they did a free promotion to get a new contract cuz then you only paid the $960 for a $650 free phone. Amazingly people fell for it constantly. The best was people still holding on to their phone for an additional 2 years cycle being like well I'm not upgrading cuz I'm saving money all the while paying that $40 per month. So by the end of four years they've spent almost over $2,000 on the $650 free phone

That comparison doesn't make sense, since one model is the most recent and another is a year old. Let's look at advantages to the iPhone XS:
- Faster CPU
- Faster GPU
- Two to three times the length of software support
- Better cameras
- Significantly better battery even on the smaller XS
- Screen is better according to some tests, with little white point variation and no black clipping as with Samsung phones
- Better speakers
A bigger screen is not something “better”. It’s a preference

The only justifiable reason Apple or any other phone company can sell their phones $1000 is if it has 4K touch screen, 32gb of ram with 12 cores, i9 Intel processor, 2 terabytes of on board storage and dual micro sd card slot.
