The BEST MESH WIFI for your Home Office/Smart Homes? Netgear Vs. Linksys Vs. Google!

  • A smart home is only as good as its wifi connection. And to ensure that your smart devices can actually reach wifi, it’s important to get a mesh wifi router that’s worth your time and your money.
Getting a mesh wifi setup is like buying an actual blanket, if it’s full of holes and comes up short it’s not really worth the purchase. Mesh devices cover your home in a blanket of wifi. A warm cozy wifi blanket that’s just super fast and consistent.
For the TL:DW crowd, between the Google Nest, Linksys Vello and Netgear Orbi, the Vello comes out on top. It’s the strongest overall performer. Next up would be the GoogleNest Wifi followed by the Orbi.
BUT I’ll be honest with you, between the last two products, the Orbi may be better in some instances like gaming, NAS-ing and homes with brick walls whereas the Google product might be better for those in smaller home, who live in a perfect wifi environment and use voice commands all the time.
Get the Linksys Velop on Amazon!
    Amazon US: shreh.ca/3cU6MC2
    Amazon CA: shreh.ca/2QjMeJs
    Amazon UK: shreh.ca/2xArmHq
    Amazon DE: shreh.ca/33rFEGo
Get the Google Nest on Amazon!
    Amazon US: shreh.ca/2WdM4Hl
    Amazon CA: shreh.ca/3aWAzbr
    Amazon UK: shreh.ca/3aUL1jN
    Amazon DE: shreh.ca/3d2N3QQ
Get the Netgear Orbi on Amazon!
    Amazon US: shreh.ca/3aWry27
    Amazon CA: shreh.ca/39OwLJc
    Amazon UK: shreh.ca/3aYuGKZ
    Amazon DE: shreh.ca/2QhAVSd
Here’s are the following speediest setups (00:02:46) I used to test these smart home mesh’s:
    Base station only - 00:03:26
    Base station + Repeater - 00:04:47
Base station encased in brick - 00:05:55
Base station encased in brick + Repeater - 00:07:07
For test #1, the Google Nest Wifi came out on top whereas the Orbi performed the poorest. If all you need is a good base station, the Google Nest Wifi is definitely the one to get.
For test #2, which would be your typical smart home setup, the Linksys Velop performed the best. It had the most consistent results. The Orbi was terrible in our tests.
For the brick test, Linksys Velop came out on top, giving us the highest speeds. The Orbi again performed the worst, especially when it came to distance from the router.
With the last test, the Orbi did the best which was surprising given how poorly it performed on all the other tests.
    UI/Setup - 00:09:49
When it comes to the UI and setup, the Google Nest Wifi and Linksys Vellop were easy to setup. Between the two, we’d give the nod to the Vellop because it only takes one app to setup and manage whereas the Google Nest Wifi uses the Google Home App to setup and any additional features requires the use of the Google Wifi app.
The Orbi’s app is fine but the setup process required several attempts to get going. As a side note, during our testing, we turned each router on and off and the Orbi also took the longest to come back online.
    Hardware - 00:11:10
For hardware, there are two things you need to consider. The size and the # of ports. The Google Nest Wifi has the smallest footprint but the least expandability. The base one one port and the repeater has none.
The Linksys Velop provides a single extra ethernet ports on the base and repeater. From a size perspective, it’s tall and slender so it’s easier to tuck away.
The Orbi looks like a piece of technology. It’s large and ugly (from our perspective) BUT it offers the most built-in expandability with a plethora of extra ports to plug in whatever you want.
    Router Management - 00:12:57
For most people, you’ll just need to plug in th units and run the app. For people who need a bit more, managing the Linksys Velop is simpler as everything is done through an app.
The Google Nest Wifi installs through the Google Home App and is managed through the Wifi App. It also has time-caps on the device priority which is seems silly to me.
The Orbi app has the fewest options to manage your router. If you want the full gamut of router abilities, you need to use the web-interface to manage your device. This isn’t explicitly stated anywhere in the packaging or routers. I just stumbled across it by accident.
    Special Features - 00:16:32
If you’re a big fan of using Google Assistant, the repeater with the Google Nest Wifi has a speaker and Google Assistant built into it. The base does not (also, the repeater doesn’t sound as good as Google Home.)
With the Linksys Velop, you have a feature called aware which uses the wifi signals to detect movement in your home. It’s a neat feature but the problem for me was that I had no idea if the movement was from inside my home, on my property or was it movement from my neighbors?
The Netgear Orbi by itself doesn’t anything special BUT Netgear does offer an outdoor module so that you don’t have to cover your repeater with a ziplock if you’re looking to expand your wifi outside.

Since April 2020 I have an Orbi RBK43S-100NAS, also listed as Orbi AC2200 and it works great. It is listed as having coverage for 6,000 sq ft house. I have the base upstairs on top of cabinet and 1 satellite downstairs in kitchen and 1 satellite downstairs in living room. Good coverage in our 2200 sq ft house and all the way out to the mailbox at the end of the driveway. Everything is connected with 5 GHz, except for an outdoor smart plug that only works on 2.4 GHz (Orbi figured that out for me). I have an iMac hardwired to the base and everything else Wifi (smart Samsung TV, an Amazon Firestick, 2 iPhones, 1 iPad, 2 Dell laptops, 1 wireless HP printer, and a thermostat). The laptops and iPhones connect seamlessly to base or satellite as we move around the house. Sometimes items connect to the base when a satellite is closer - go figure. We have Cox Communications at 150 Mbps and do not have any buffering watching a streaming movie. Setup was pretty easy and the app is fun to see what's connected to what and to see the connection speed. At first the HP printer and Orbi had a problem with their IP address, but tech support at HP helped me get that straightened out. I liked that I could hard wire to the base and satellites if needed which is why I got this model, plus at the time is was $100 less than a similar Linksys model.

I loved your review, especially since it's coming from someone who's trying to look at things objectively from a real world usage perspective. I personally have owned the top Wifi5 Orbi (RBK50) for about 3 years now and it has worked flawlessly with. Speeds over Wifi are consistently at the maximum speeds I'm paying for and the range has been fantastic. I can control my internet speakers from the fence in my backyard, which is approximately 100 feet or so from the house. I will say though that it wasn't until after going through the Advanced settings that my Orbi worked as well as it does.
Thanks again for a great review!

Owned a Velop and upgraded to Google Nest. Hands down the Google Nest is able to sustain higher speeds and consistently delivers. Velop maxed out at about 54Mbps while Google Nest is 94Mbps on average. This was tested at the extremes of our three level house. You’re so very right. The Velop software was always painful to use. Google is two apps (argh!) but at least they both work :)

Brick test is the best! We rent and the landlords had the wifi installed in the converted garage (to family room), meaning it's surrounded by concrete walls. We have a brand new wifi 6 fios router with 1GB speeds and barely get a signal in the room right freaking next to it, literally through 1 wall 5-6 feet away. Speeds are 16mbps. Absolute insanity. IDK why they had it installed there, and they won't let us have one installed elsewhere. Therefore, here I am looking at this stuff.

Good video but I think you MISSED a couple of other very good options..🤷‍♂️
Like TP link Deco M9 plus..🤔
I am Networking Professional, on a low level 😋..
I have installed all of these mesh may be more than 8,9 hundred of them but honestly I found found Deco M9 the most stable and 30 percent more faster than Velop tri-band, though Orbi RBK 53 is still a lot more faster than Velop.
Infact a 7 times in the same house where velop was installed earlier and than they wanted to replace with Deco m9 it was almost 30% more faster.. and I am taking about Thick Concrete walls of Dubai.
And one of the biggest issue with Velop is that its very very unstable, out of 3, 1 node would just get disconnect on its own, thought still being fairly close enough.
And it would take almost 13 minutes to setup at least to setup just one of the nodes. 1st it will wake up the node in 3 mins, 2nd it will connect with the network in another 6 min and so on..
Where as Deco M9 takes 10 mins all together to setup 3 nodes 📢.
So having experienced this maybe i would dis-agree with your opinion..
    Sorry 🤷‍♂️

A lot of people that use Mesh also use an Ethernet Backhaul. The advantage is having 1 SSID with seamless hand-offs. The Google Nest is WiFi 5 not 6 (802.11ax). The Orbi WiFi 6 System AX6000,
Linksys MX10 Velop AX, and Netgear NIGHTHAWK MESH WIFI 6 SYSTEM (MK62) are WiFi 6.

so you dont need to connect it to a wired line right? Can you use these as a signal booster repeater for your hotspot off of an iPhone let’s say?

I have the Orbi rbk50 and it works really well if you’re willing to tinker and I hope they fix this in future firmware. The dedicated back haul channel is not listed or configurable in the web ui or app. One day my neighbor got a new modem from their ISP that used the same 5ghz channel as my orbi back haul, the network performance took a huge hit. You have to enable telnet, then you can change the back haul channel via command line. My internet speed is 125 up and down, I get that speed everywhere in the house with orbi as long as the back haul channel is not interfered with. I did a test transferring files between computers in different rooms, one wired to the base, the other wired to a satellite and got a bit over 800 mbps

You are spot on about hard-wiring to the points but you don't get the full benifit of hardwire if you are not using a wired backhaul. Being able to use a wireless backhaul is a great option to have but it should really be your second option only if you have no way to hardwire. There is a significant Improvement to hard-wiring. And you are not limited on how far away you can have the points away from each other when you hardwire. For example I have one of my points out in my shed to cover the backyard... the performance of this point would not be very good if I didn't Hardware because it is not close enough to the points in the house to get a good solid Wireless backhaul connection.
I currently have the last generation Google Wi-Fi and this has been a great system. But looking at the new Nest WiFi I'm pretty disappointed because they seem to be focused more on Google Assistant and smart speaker functionality then focusing on actual Network functionality in performance. I already have Google Home Speakers all over my house so I do not need my Wi-Fi setup to also be smart home speakers and then charge me more for it on top of it. I would much rather Google focus on just making a good solid wifi system and quit trying to make some hybrid device. They removed stuff that I want and added things that I don't want... This not a very good way for Google to keep customers coming back.

Orbi hands down, the smaller units are not powerful enough to penetrate walls effectively at long distance with high speeds. The browser functionality is also a plus when you want to have more control, not to mention you have the ability to hard wire your devices.

Fwiw, I got the Orbi a few years ago… and have been happy
Generally, I find that metal…. Like in a kitchen… is worse than bricks for killing wifi signal….
The Orbi has a couple of nice features…. Now it is older and has a discounted price, The separate channel function is valuable … basically, they have a totally separate router circuit to link the remote stations…. This way the connection to the remote is not absorbing bandwidth going to your devices. Finally, I like that the remote has a wired network connection…. Which uses the separate channel…. So again, it does not share bandwidth with your wireless devices
That said, I do not game so do not need enormous bandwidth

Good video. It's the second one where someone's testing their before/after wifi speed on their phone. What app for that? Or is it part of the Linksys app itself?

Dude I had no idea you had another channel! You should tell us these things when we are on MobileReviewsEh. I just stumbled on this because I need to kick my wifi extender to the curb and replace it with mesh technology. I keep missing the Walmart deals where they are selling 3 Google wifis for $65 and 3 Linksys for $75 so here I am looking to see whats good enough to spend full price on.

If you were issued a Wireless Gateway (modem and router in one unit), you need to bridge the device as only a modem and then only use the #1 Ethernet port to the first mesh WiFi point. This avoids double NAT problems.

I have the orbi in a two story house. Generally works ok but we find sometimes devices connect to the router not the repeater or vice versa regardless of what is closer. Re mounting the wifi under the floor - have you done any testing comparing ceiling mounting to underfloor?
