  • I love my Nest Cam IQ and Nest Cam Indoor with Nest Aware. I hate them without. I figured it's going to cost over $1400 dollars over two years to use my Nest Cams with Nest Aware. Is it worth it? What am I getting for that much money?

Going all in with a Nest Cam and Nest Aware subscription means that you get the most peace of mind for the area that you’re monitoring with your Nest products. It’s going to cost you a bit though.
However, if you opt out of Nest Aware after the free trial period, you’ll have spent $200-$300 dollars on cameras that are basically a step up form a webcam attached to an old computer.
Without Nest Aware, you basically retain all the hardware features of the camera such as watching live video, 2-way communication and the occasional notification that something is going on in that room.
In the next few paragraphs, I’m going to:
breakdown the different features of Nest Aware
figure out how much it's going to cost over two years
    a cheaper alternative
    what happens when you re-subscribe
So if you’re not exactly sure what Nest Aware is, it is the cloud portion of the Nest Cam. Nest describes it as a boost of intelligence for your Nest Cam. I call it a boost of sales for Alphabet, the parent company of Nest as well as Google.
Let’s elaborate on these features a bit more.
For the cloud storage, based on the plan, you either have a 10 day or 30 day backup of 24/7 video recording. This is going to be handy for the occasional time that you *think something has happened.
Without Nest Aware, you get 5 hours of activity. Not videos, just tiny clips that show you something has happened. Sort of. If you’re never home, the 10 or 30 day cloud storage feature is going to be handy on days where your house get’s broken into at 9 in the morning and you don’t know that happened till 6pm. Then you can go back into time and find out what happened.
But let this sink in. You’ve just spent $200-$300 dollars on a Nest Cam and it without Nest Aware, it has done almost nothing to help you in the off chance that something bad happens.
Sharing videos and time lapses. This is a handy feature that allows you to share whatever good or bad thing that’s going on in your home. This is going to be the most important feature when it comes to keeping your home safe.
Onto the next feature which are the activity zones. Being able to set activity zones is quite handy especially if you’re using a Nest Camera to monitor a larger room.
If you’ve watched my Nest Cam Indoor and Cam IQ review, you’ll know that the facial recognition is a big selling point for me. It is a neat feature. But the question I have to ask myself is: How important is it to recognize faces In the general scheme of monitoring your home for security purposes?
So that's Nest Aware. For me, nothing really stands out with this service.
So how much will it cost to run for two years?
First of all, you’ll need to buy the cameras so for the Nest Cam IQ and Indoor, you’re going to spend $500 USD’s. With each camera, you get 30 days free of the 10-Day Nest Aware subscription. This why this scenario is two years and one month, to make the math a bit easier.
Over two years, in total, this is going to cost you $800 USD for the 10-Day plan and $1600 for the 30-Day plan. Is your peace of mind worth that much money over two years? For me personally, it isn’t because I know I can get basically the same functionality at a lower cost.
Now what is a potentially cheaper alternative? Check out the last part of the video for a quick comparison with the D-Link Omna.
Here’s the last thing I’ll say about Nest Aware. If you’re thinking that you can sign up for Nest Aware after something has happened, well, you can’t. Which makes sense to me but given the how much Nest is asking you to spend, I was thinking *maybe this was a feature? Sorry, you can’t game Nest Aware I guess.

I just bought my first doorbell camera and went with the hub.
The reason I chose this was the facial recognition tech. Its nice to no who is at the door and have it announced. As well as that you can keep track of who comes and goes. We have an autistic son that spends 15 minutes at home by himself every workday before I get home. This let's me know exactly when he comes home.
Also the lack of 24/7 recording in the ring brand is their biggest downfall.
Basically yes it costs more but you pay for what you get.

I purchased Outdoor IQ and Doorbell. The outdoor IQ did not include the locking set-screw and the foam pad was damaged. Night vision for the IQ is disappointing and does not see beyond 3 meters. The doorbell is considerably better even though the specs are lower. As for the subscription; it's not near as expensive as you mentioned so apparently they took heed and made the plan options more realistic.

Great job helping me more fully understand what I may be getting into. I bought the 6 Arlo Pro 2 package-sent them back, just installed ring pro and thinking of sending it back (ugly as all get out). I’m finding that the more I know, the more indecisive I’m becoming. Dad has Vivint and is pushing that hard, but I don’t want to spend $1400 + $49 per month. And I’m not cool with a 5 year contract.
At the end of the day, I’m leaning toward the better, more expensive IQ and will need 5 @ $17 mo/$170 yr. What ercks me is the $1500 initial investment. OUCH! I did want to add that paying $170 upfront brings it to $14.16 per month-over 25 months that’s $354 + $1500 for 5 IQ outdoors, that’s a total initial investment of $1850. In my third year though, I’ll just have $14 per month for 5 cameras.
At which time, all my cameras will be ‘old tech’!

So I use OBS Studio (free app) and I take the URL from my nest app account for my camera. Put it in my OBS Studio app using sources and then I see everything my camera sees and I widen the screen and I hit start recording (not start streaming)
OBS Studio records all my videos for free along with audio I just have to keep my computer on and on eco and low powered settings but make sure your computer isn’t set to sleep.
    You’re welcome.

Thanks for the great review. I agree with your thoughts. In addition, I think the business practice of restricting their customer's ability to stream the video footage locally is questionable, at best. The customer should choose the subscription service because they prefer it over local streaming, not because you've omitted all other options. I own one camera from Nest, having received it as a gift. Knowing they actively restrict customers from the ability to stream locally, I wouldn't dare give them a cent for their product. What if they decide to shut the service down? It would make for an expensive paperweight, anyway.

Can you review Blink? I have both Nest Aware for 3 cameras, and 3 Blink Cameras which is a no subscription camera with cloud recording. The only issue with blink that I am finding is that it begins recording several seconds after movement and only records for a very short period of time, not for the entire movement. Blink is super easy to download videos to your phone or computer and the price is so much cheaper.
Also, we are finding that our Nest cameras are too far away from the modem and router on 5GHz and we sometimes have intermittent service, they recommend that we change it over to the 2.4GHz, but we can't figure out how to redirect it.

Sorry but have to disagree with you on most points. For example I got my Nest Cam Outdoor camera (which i use at my front door) for 170.00 on amazon and am paying 5 (only 60 dollars a year) a month for the nest aware subscription. That allows me to view all motion tracking and more importantly set it to only get alerts when it sees a person on my walkway (not motion but a person and only on my walkway). Not many cameras can do that for this price. I use cheaper cameras for my driveway and back porch (thanks WYZE) that don't require a subscription but i don't need the level of awareness for distinguishing between a person and motion at those locations as i need at my front door. Just my 2 cents.

I have been looking into Netgear Arlo Pro 2 and more recently Netgear Arlo Q Plus. You get 7 days free cloud storage. I live on ground floor so I can’t get cameras out of reach so I thought I would place them inside window pointing out but Arlo Pro 2 uses IR for detection and it won’t work through the window. Arlo Q Plus uses pixels so that seems like the one to go for. The cameras are way too expensive to be subscribing to a plan as well.

Yes I’ve realised the same conclusion when I purchased the cam years ago! For sure their viewing definition is good with 180 degrees viewing shot and good night vision but that Aware subscription sucks when you realise you cannot view who came in or out or what happened unless you have Aware or use Nest free screenshots 12h history for free in bad quality catches screen! In short access the screening history of the cam! So frustrating! Anyway now my Nest cam has compatibility or working issues with my Apple devices (iPad and iPhone), the cam is working fine with my Windows OS based laptop, the cam viewing on the Apple will keep on loading and not being able to view in a normal way. You can only see screen shots done during a 12 hours period from the history. Now about the Windows OS laptop? You cannot view your history unless........you have an Aware subscription! I think Nest company are running after their profit and downgrading their cam unless you get dependent of their subscription! I’m for sure looking for alternative! Free alternative!

    • @mainlywood1
      @mainlywood1 5 років тому

Actually my apologies to Nest. I realised the problem with the camera not loading was a fault with my router’s firewall settings. Couple of weeks ago I’ve changed the firewall settings from Low to Medium and the Nest camera didn’t follow around that change. Now that I’ve changed the firewall settings the camera is viewing fine. Of course I still don’t have camera shots history but just screenshots history. But at least I can view who came into the building in camera mode in high definition.

I have to say that I have really given Nest Aware a hard tried & true shot. Spent $600+ on 3 cameras and didn't have any problems subscribing to Nest Aware, but having installed these cams specifically for security purposes, when the cameras "glitched for wi-fi connection issues" (was the excuse I was told by NA reps; & it happened OFTEN), I had absolutely no explanation for what happened, outside of that. So, it's possible that even with their 32 bit encryption technology, my cam could've been hacked, but Nest has no way of making that distinction. Furthermore, having set up "zone's" for activity notifications, the camera was unable to make the distinction between a human being and my 4 legged 12lb dog, when it came to notifying me of having "spotted someone." So I was constantly being notified of activity that was completely irrelevant, in my home. Now, that issue.....2 years later, appears to have only gotten worse in that Nest is notifying me of "activity" in certain zones when the only activity that's happening in those zones is LITERALLY.........LIGHT changing; like when the sun goes down. This is their interpretation of something that is important to notify a customer of in the way of activity. It's ridiculous. And every single time I call tech support,.................I get ZERO ANSWERS to my questions. ZILCH. NOTHIN. Warning to ALL.......DO NOT BOTHER investing in these cams b/c the backend support.................isn't worth S***! Seriously..........tech support couldn't even tell me how to save the clips I created, to an external drive; when dragging & dropping didn't work & even conversions I attempted to make, didn't work. So.............I wasn't able to pull MY OWN DATA off of their servers, in the end. With Nest Aware............newsflash.....you're not getting ANYTHING MORE than a useless & expensive camera. SAVE YOUR MONEY & INVEST SOMEWHERE ELSE........ B/c Nest Aware IS A JOKE, people! A complete, utter comedy show! Don't WASTE your MONEY. (like I did). I'm checking out Canary next (& no, I don't work for them. And yes......I'm actually thinking about doing things differently with creating a personal VPN & dedicating it to my own uploaded website. B/c that's probably more reliable).

Are you focusing on indoor cameras? I have been looking at outdoor cameras and am looking at the Ring Floodlight camera. I am debating on getting this along with the Ring pro doorbell which combined would be $60/year. I was also looking at Google's outdoor cam, doorbell and thermostat but at around $150/year I think I'm going to pass. My last option was a Skybell doorbell, Yi cam, and/or Amcrest ProHD Outdoor 4-Megapixel (2688 x 1520P) WiFi Wireless IP Security Bullet Camera. I like the idea of going with one company but I think Google is asking too much for their yearly subscription. Ring is also issuing their own security system similar to Samsung Smart Things but I believe they are fighting in court with another security company so it hasnt been released yet. Another couple more years and I think all these products will be much more refined.

I feel your pain and agree with every statement you maid. AWS is not bad for cloud storage or you can build it yourself. With internet speeds increasing I have a R2R VPN between my house and my in-laws and I use their nas to store my video and they use my NAS to store theirs for free or just the fraction of the cost of electricity since they already use NAS for other things. I was able to find 3 Nest IQ Indoor Cams on sale pretty cheap ($420 total rather than the $800 MSRP). Combined with the newer 5 day Nest Aware subscription, they would cost me $110 a year to run. That comes out to be $640 for two years, or 320 a year.
Obviously they didn't have this subscription plan when this video was made, but the cost now is MUCH lower. This also is for 3 cameras instead of just 2. If you don't include the camera price you are looking at less than $10 a month to run 3 cameras.
I do wish the price was cheaper when you start getting more cameras added on (4+), and I wish they had a 7 day subscription to cover week long vacations, but all things considered it's really not that expensive to get Nest Aware for 2-3 cameras.

Great video! I do think Nest Aware is a rip off, however, the pricing that you showed was not completely correct, if you get aware for both cameras per year it will be $100 for one and $50 for the others, that means $150 per year and $300 for two years of service. That's a lot of money and you showed $800 for the 10 days, that's even worse. There's the 5 day plan now for $50 a year and $30 for additional cameras, $160 for two years of service, that's sound event better, I have one outdoor camera with the 5 day subscription now but I had it unsubscribed before because $100 per year was too much.

Am I the only person that thinks that placing a camera in your home that records audio and video all the time and sends it to Google... on whose servers it will live on in perpetuity... is just a little bit creepy?? You're correct that paying $200 - $300 for a camera or doorbell and then having to pay a subscription to access your own video is a pretty obnoxious business plan. But in the case of the Nest Hello, for example, it records audio and video constantly... not just when there is motion... not sure on their security camera's, I don't own one. This is sending that to Googles servers all the time. The video is there whether you subscribe to view it or not. I don't understand why people would want something like that in or around their home in the first place. You mention that you can log on to Nest aware and just look for video of you daughter eating birthday cake... surely you understand that if YOU can do that, so can THEY. Recent history has taught us that these companies have absolutely no moral or ethical upbringing that compels them to protect that information. Indeed, if they can sell it for profit, they will. I'm sure law enforcement loves it too... just show up with a subpoena and browse 40% of your life in real time. I'm not a criminal, nor do I have "Anything to hide"... but doesn't the idea of having some kind of privacy, in your own home, appeal to any millennial out there?

you might want to update this review. I pay only $200 a year for 2 IQ cameras and a doorbell camera. It's a 5 day instead of 10 or 30 but I do not need longer history recording. Your review might of caused Nest to offer the 5 day.

I'm curious of alternatives that provide 24/7 video cloud recording? That's one of the big selling features to me of nest aware. I have a Ring doorbell and camera and had I know beforehand how much it misses (lag before recording), I wouldn't have purchased it. Rick Reumann I went with the Nest Hello for that reason and it really makes a big difference seeing the whole thing without the beginning cut out. You can see into the distance as well before the morion defector kicks in. So if someone pulls into your driveway and then goes to tour front door you can also see the make/model of the vehicle and maybe even the license plate. You can’ do that without continuous recording. That made the Nest the only option worth the money in my mind.

Help please. I have 2 homes in different countries. Both have an alarm system that is contracted to a security company. Unfortunately when not at home sometimes the alarm goes off due to wind or even a spider passing the outside passive. This isn’t a big deal as I can remotely switch the alarm on or off from my phone. What I’d like is a system that I can switch on when not there and off when there. Pointless having a camera filming me as I know I’m not the problem. So in short if my alarm goes off and I’m out the country I can look and see. If I see it’s trouble I can simply phone the security company. Must be for day and night. There is WiFi and connecting power is not a problem. Only need about 5 cameras for indoors. Technically challenged person here guys.🤣🤣🤣

Wouldn’t someone entering a house cover their face, especially nowadays when they know cameras are common? Also, even if you record someone breaking into the house, what are the stats for likelihood of things being recovered? Does police involve itself in petty theft with a great deal of success? Maybe it’s simply better to buy yearly insurance for not much money, enough to cover a large amount of stolen items.

I just helped install a 8 camera system for a friend on their 2 story house. Was not easy to run wires, but we did it. These were standard 1080P camera's that plugged into a DVR type system. All the recordings are LOCAL. There's ZERO monthly fees, and you can see the video from the camera's on your Smartphone anywhere in the world so long as you have an Internet connection.
I would NEVER get one of these cloud service cameras. I do have a cheap $40 camera, that does some basic cloud stuff, that I mounted inside my garage. Just used to see what's going on when I'm not home. For example, if my garage door is open for too long, I get a alarm, I can then look at the camera and see if someone is home, parked in the driveway or the garage door was left open. I plan to soon get some cameras for my own house which will be IP POE cameras. IP camera's connect using a Ethernet cable. POE is power over ethernet. So you can plug them into a POE Switch. They get power and Video connection from the same cable. You can then get a stand along DVR that supports IP POE camera's, or use software that you can run on your computer or a NAS. You can run 1 or a bunch of camera's and there's ZERO monthly fee. It's all local storage and you can almost always view it all from a Smartphone.
I don't get why anyone would want to pay NEST (Google) $100-$300 PER YEAR? Is SUCKER on your forehead? Same goes for these other cloud services. Quite frankly, I'm tired of everyone having a hand out to get a monthly FEE from people. It's one reason why I haven't gotten something like the RING doorbell. Really, a monthly fee for a doorbell? No thanks!!!
Lastly, ISP's are adding CAP's. I have Comcast with a 1TB Cap. I really have no problem hitting it if I'm not careful. What do you think happens with 1 or more Camera's uploading Video every day? It's eating into your CAP and for what?
All these small monthly charges add up!!! That's the new thing. You run out of idea's on updating software that people want to buy a new copy. Forget it, turn it into a subscription instead so people are forever paying for it. You make a ton more money from people. Why do you you think freemium games are so popular with developers? They could charge $50, or they could make more than that from people, buying some little dumb thing over and over again. You need to fight against this crap.

JB Dragon, I am 100% on the same page as you. Cloud storage is purely business and ensuring a steady stream of income for software developers like Adobe and Microsoft. I'm willing to bet that in the near future, computers will not have any storage capability at all. They'll all be "terminals" and if you want access to your own photos and documents, you'll have to pay someone a fee for that. If you decide you don't want to keep paying a fee or can't afford to, sorry none of your data is available to you. This makes me absolutely crazy. They give it to you for free to begin with and once you've used some space, fees kick in. Soon, you're paying Microsoft $10 a month to use Word, Excel and Outlook, $5 a month to Adobe, $30 a month to Nest for your security camera, $5 a month for your local news and that's just the beginning. I can't think of a single person who sat down to use their computer and said, wait a minute, I wish someone else would control my data and photos for me. I get the accessibility angle, but I hate that we will no longer be able to choose to control our own data. We DO need to fight against this crap.

    • @jbdragon3295
      @jbdragon3295 6 років тому +2

Ya, the cloud, Unless it's your own, is dumb for something like this. It may be good when it's free for a backup of pictures you've taken. But forced to pay a fee for as long as you own and use the device? No thanks! It's one reason why I haven't gotten something like the RING doorbell. Why the hell would I pay some company a monthly fee for YEARS for a doorbell??? It's as bad as Freemium Apps. I'd rather pay a little money for a full complete game then play these little games. Clearly there's a lot of suckers falling for it as more and more company's are doing it. Nothing like a study revenue stream for doing very little.

As for ring. It is only 30 a year. And they do store all your activity till you delete. I️ just ordered nests doorbell being released in feb and see google who has indefinite cloud storage charges much differently and their cost to add more storage if needed to offer what’ ring does would be so much less expensive because of their already huge buying power. @ beagle22: Your type of mentality of an obeying slave is what got us here and this is exactly what is fueling this rip off!
How about them giving us an option to store the video locally? Why wouldn't g00gle allow us to use our NAS etc? Why are they forcing us into paying monthly?
I completely agree with the author that for this kind of money you are better off getting a free setup from ADT etc.And I am not even going to go into the privacy issue with google and facebook holding and mining your data.Cloud is a rip off for the end users or at least it has to be optional while retaining a full functionality of the device.I am moving everything away from google / cloud but you have to be advanced user to do it or to even understand what they are doing which you definitely not.
