Turned out sweet! Rip the tape off snd mark off the edge with painters tape, then spray with black flex seal spray. Itll make your kevlar look factory fresh 👌🏼
I just did this. Saved the rubber edges before cutting the helmet, JB welded the edge, sanded it, gorilla glued the rubber back on, then taped the edges to flex-sealed the entire rim to fade in my glued edges. Made a MICH 2002 length and it looks great.
Im debating spray painting flex seal on a cvc I acquired but I don’t wanna ruin it. If u know anyone who has used flex seal spray on Kevlar how’d it turn out?
Damn I really needa start a channel. For now though, here’s a protip: Upol Raptorliner is your BFF for this. You can either blast the whole helmet, or just tape out the edges you want (where rubbers used to be) and spray them, then pull tape for a clean, indestructible edging. It comes in black (duh) it now in tintable White, including FDE/OD tints. Great job and vid, BTW. Subd. 👊🏽
Good job man, I have a Ops-core FAST SX large on sale for $640, weight honestly is comparable. To be able to save $400 or more for a weekend project is great. Good job man.
"Didn't want to go at this blind and screw around for 30 mins on a video...." Bruh I feel this. I'm staring at almost 3 hours of footage I need to cut to a 20 min vlog. I need to film less! Haha good video as always dude.
nice to see more babyface P content, if I go this route I would put a rubberized coating around the edge. something like LINE-X or Flex seal would work well for keeping the kevlar/amarid in place without worrying about the adhesive breaking down and paint. good vid though
Couple of suggestions: First when painting on ground at least put a piece of cardboard down. Maybe invest in a card table and put newspaper or cardboard over it so you are not bending on the ground to paint. Second, try getting some automotive rubber trim for the edge and glue the trim to the helmet. Great job though. Thank you.
What if you reused the rubber edge cover? I feel like, with the help of a heat gun, you could install it right after you apply the epoxy. It would probably look nicer and be more resistant to damage.
As a “proper seal” I bought some rubber RV trim for my RV and it looks close. Google rubber edge trim for RV or Automobile, and you could probably find something to work.
Looks alright for what it is. I am curious for a better option than the tape on the edges. I wonder what they actually use for helmets from the factory.
@BabyFaceP I got a few questions for ya:) 1. How did you remove the old rubber trim? 2. The SBR rubber trim from McMaster-Carr is it special in any way material wise or is just like any other rubber trim? 3. What glue/adhesive did you use for the rubber trim? Someone commented that the JB marineweld doesn’t really stick well to rubber.
I paid $65 for a pasgt, just ordered a retention system and padding to ditch the old leather suspension system, and ordered foam padding, I'm gonna line x mine black then spray paint camo pattern, add arc rails later down the road, I'm using some rubber door gasket on mine, and pryuse marine epoxy, but I'd go with gorilla brand flex seal tape, but use rtv epoxy to help seal rest of the tape then line x it, and paint camo color

I gotta do this to my mich helmet... I have a bump helmet right now for NODs but it has no ballistics protection so maybe it's time to cut my actual ballistic helmet

Technically yes, how much? Who knows. The integrity of the helmet isnt 100% when they drill the factory holes for the chin strap. This probably makes a negligible difference.
I've cut well into the hundreds of helmets from the PASGT, ACH, LWH and ECH. I don't recommend the Chinese helmets because their laminating process is horrible and once you start cutting all those unsealed kevlar fibers start exposing. If you want a good rubber edging i would suggest using a butyl rubber about the thickness of a bicycle tire and bonded on with 3M rubber adhesive.
Did you do anything to seal the holes you drilled for the shroud? I've got an old helmet I just want to drill for an old one hole shroud for functional clone purposes.

Would this in anyway affect ballistics performance? I feel like all that alteration would mess up the tightness of the Kevlar but idk much just honestly curious if anyone would know.
Some testing by nerds on the cut-off ear-flaps seems to indicate that they're still okay if properly sealed. But the "official" answer is that it's not super advisable, but getting shot in the head isn't really either.
what type of arc rails did you use because id like to use the high cut or the opscore fast arc rails but idk if the ach and the fast arc rails have different mounting positions i dont want to drill a bunch of extra holes into my ach so i just was currious
In case you are still looking for an answer, for ACHs, MICHs, and ECHs, you need Ops Core Arc ACH rails. They different in shape compared to those used for FAST helmets because the shell geometries are different. Hope this helps.
@andrewbunner3591 thank you I figured as much but I wasn't sure if fast rails would work on an ACH or vise versa but looks like I'll be doing ACH rails from ops core thank you
@gabrielhedlund9500 no problem broski. Get the skeleton ones if you can. You can run small zip ties through them for cable/shock cord management if you so choose.
A guy told me to use bicycle inner tube. I tried it but sucked at cutting it to size and failed miserably. I’m going to try rubber sealants putty tape next. If that doesn’t work, anyone recommend anything else? I’ve tried other things too and couldn’t get it. Someone should make an instructions video on how to do it.
Oh my buddy I wanted to do a helmet like this build it my own there's a custom helmet that has a bullet proof mask on etzy it's cost is 1k will post the link see if u can add the kevlar mask it looks awesome like the shredder helmet an mask
Dude you REALLY need to do a better job sealing the the helmet after you cut it. Cutting an ACH is fine but you really need to do a more thorough job on it.
Would have been great to know what rails you used/where you got them. How you oriented the ngv mount and how you marked the rails out. Videos like 50% useless and then a good chunk of the other 50% you stood directly in front of camera 🤦

Would any bedliner typer of paint work? Or is there something specific to the raptor liner brand that does the trick here?

Seen in surplus stores ACH helments stripped down for $50.00. This is a sweet Idea.
Where was that
Recommend using steel epoxy mix on the edge, sand down after desired shape. Get a nice lip. 👌🏼
What if you reused the rubber edge cover? I feel like, with the help of a heat gun, you could install it right after you apply the epoxy. It would probably look nicer and be more resistant to damage.
Yeah you probably could, but I mean you could find some rubber edging at the hardware store for cheap
As a “proper seal” I bought some rubber RV trim for my RV and it looks close. Google rubber edge trim for RV or Automobile, and you could probably find something to work.
I did this about 8 years ago and reused the rubber edge guard that came on the helmet!!
Looks alright for what it is. I am curious for a better option than the tape on the edges. I wonder what they actually use for helmets from the factory.
Search around for edge trim liner, there's racing stuff that should work.
The manufacturers use and extruded U channel rubber edging that's made in a mold. Then bonded to the helmet with contact adhesive.
They sell the replacement trim on eBay
@BabyFaceP I got a few questions for ya:)
Is there a need to seal up the screw holes under the three hole mount? Those were just spray painted over right?
Thanks for making this video! I learned a lot. Keep it up dude!
drilling the 3 holes for the shroud yourself. How did you line everything up?
Yea the tape is the only thing that doesnt look great. Works though. Id be looking into a rubber u type seal
Zip systems makes a stretchable window and door tape for sealingout water
“Throw it in the paint booth”
Proceeds to toss it on the ground and color match to the crocs 🙌🏼

So all in all 65 bucks for the helmet initially whats your total cost?
Maybe layer up a few layers of Flex Seal instead of using tape
Another great video as always!
Which suspension system did you go with?
Did you use the rust oleum camouflage 1919 color?? Love how it turned out
The only reason I'd do this is so I can get those special muff mounts so I can click them out and vent my ears.

And to think that Militech is offering NIJ IIIA rated ballistic ear covers for FAST helmets. Hmmmmmm.

Just a quick question because I am getting my ech helmet cut to a high cut. What rails should I buy ? I am a little confused.
Wish I saw this first. I did it with a hacksaw, anger, and a whole lot of spite…
I did this a couple years ago with a sawzall and a bottle of water to spray the blade with to stop it from burning up and keep dust down
Wow super good job 👏🏾 I can’t wait to mod mine
Stupid question, but won’t this compromise the integrity of the helmet? Debating about picking up one from an Army Surplus.
Technically yes, how much? Who knows. The integrity of the helmet isnt 100% when they drill the factory holes for the chin strap. This probably makes a negligible difference.
@@VoskiTheTech Couldn't put it better myself.

Question, why not use a diamond cutting blade for a smoother cut?
He was hesitant to swap out a crappy and dull $3 blade for a new one, seriously doubt he is going to pop for a $20 diamond blade 😂
Maybe some automotive door trim would work. Like for a large truck or something.
I picked up some trim from McMaster, going to do an update vid.
