  • Here it is, CARDIGAN, the second song from Taylor Swift's Folklore album. So far this album has really impressed me. I react to this very sad, though mellifluous song, and give you my honest feedback. I play along and show you some of the musicality involved. Enjoy.

i also like the imagery of a cardigan in the sense that it’s a seasonal clothing item - the narrator’s partner uses her when he finds it necessary, makes her feel warm, then discards her once the seasons change. in other songs in the album it’s established that he had a summer fling, otherwise when a cardigan is no longer “necessary”.

Sorry, I just discovered this channel. Sorry if I'm replying a year later haha. Another angle I see this, is how young people are always spoke to like "you're still young you don't understand yet". I think this image was also portrayed by how they were presented wearing trendy clothes and how adults think of teenagers as shallow.
While this may be true, that teens have a lot to learn and many things to understand, that doesn't mean their experience and their pain is not valid. Although they may not understand some aspects of life yet, I know as we grow, we learn about challenges in marriage, being a parent, money, which are all heavier.. but still, even if this is just a puppy love or childish heartbreak to you, at this moment, this is their whole world. This is their reality. And this is what they think the world and what love is about. So to watch is all crumble is a very painful experience.
This is just further strengthened by mentioning a father leaving.. they won't understand the complications of marriage, but children still ache, they feel sadness, lost, and pain just as much as we do.

So the way she wrote most of the songs on folklore was Aaron Dessner sent her an instrumental with no vocals, lyrics, or melodies, and she sent him back a completed song as a voice memo. There are some songs she solo wrote and some with other producers but that is how a majority were written 😊

I think it's important to contextualise that this was THE quarantine album. It was released in July 2020, after we got out of isolation and we weren't used to noise and people anymore. The running theme here is quiet reflection and creativity, fantasizing about things and people, being in nature. It was a cultural reset for swifties and not. She gifted us an album, an experience and a community to share it with after so many months of beeing and feeling detached from society.
It may sound drammatic, but I guess an artist like yourself can understand how powerful music is at bringing people together.
Thank you again for the reaction and don't worry about the pacing of your videos, do them when you can!

"Cardigan" is one of the three songs that are part of the love triangle arc that Taylor made for this record. The other two being "august" and "betty".
Do you remember when she sang "Standing in your cardigan, kissing in your car again" in the song "betty"? Yup.
    That's all. I won't give any more info so I won't spoil anything. 😄

I think Taylor writes a lot (if not most) of her songs on piano first.
And she does like to end her songs with the first phrase too, I think it's Nashville's signature, as she was first a country singer and writer.

What she writes it on depends on how she hears it in her head; she has pianos in all her homes, and literally dozens of guitars. All Too Well on Red was a guitar mix; when she performed it for the Grammy Awards (or on tour) it is usually a piano song. But she still plays it sometimes on just an acoustic guitar.

Ending with a line is a common country music songwriting technique. She started her career as a songwriter in Nashville and she brought that specific technique even in her pop and alternative stuff which made her stand out from her peers.

The "thrill" part is about the betrayal. This song is from the point of view of Betty, who was betrayed by James with Augustine. You heard James' apology on "betty", and you will hear Augustine's point of view (she fell in love with James and was left when he got back to Betty) on "august".

Something worth keeping in mind when analysing ANY song from Folklore is how Taylor adopts different personas to sing them (and Evermore too for that matter). Some of them are borderline biographical but nowhere near how some of her other albums are, and most of the songs are just stories about other people, real or imagined. I think her power as a story teller comes from how well she can write from someone else's point of view so well.

  • @edpotter1170
    @edpotter1170 2 роки тому +2

"Peter losing Wendy" is more than a fairytale reference. Peter Pan is obsessed with staying a child that he stays in Neverland, where he'd never age. When Wendy decided she wanted to return to her family, she invited Peter Pan to stay with them and they'd grow old together, in which Peter refused and they separated.
And Taylor's father didn't abandon her, but her parents did get divorced and Taylor is closer to her mother, so it could be she felt more distant to her father although he has always been there for her. She wrote a whole song "The Best Day" dedicated to her mother which only has one line about her father "I have an excellent father, his strength is making me stronger" and in another song "Mine" which was released around the time of the divorce, she did imply she was affected by it when she said "You made a rebel out of a careless man's careful daughter // You say we'll never make my parents' mistakes"

-vintage tee, brand new phone (RED)
    -High Heels on cobblestone (1989)
    -Sequin Smile, Black lipstick (Reputation)
    -Sensual Politics (Lover)

Betty 3:13 lyric - Betty, I’m here on your doorstep

with this album she made the lyrics the central part of it, that's why the songs are long, and given that this album has a lot of lyrical content she made a love triangle with characters, so 3 songs tell the love triangle story from different perspectives, so far i think you've listened to 2 of them which are cardigan and betty, I won't say the third one so you can figure it out, the point is that a lot of the lyrical content on this album is not about her, there are a few songs that are actually about her life though, but it's mostly made up stories with characters that she created during lockdown last year, a few songs or lines are for sure about her

  • @chairmanmeowapproves

Take your time! Dont stress about bringing out content faster we're happy to wait :)
One thing to note is that the reason why there doesnt appear to be any drums or beats in these Long Pond Sessions is that they shot this during covid so they had only minimal band members/staff so they were really mindful which instruments should be picked for each song, thats why they're very very stripped down. And the biggest thing to remember about Folklore is that not every song is autobiographical, she really experimented with perspectives in this album
The people who say she can't sing are only familiar with her really early performances where she would get winded and wanted a bigger performance rather than standing around singing but her lungs couldn't keep up as well so she sounded strained. She's since really improved her stamina and can really push herself to do these big dance numbers and move around without getting winded. If you want to see what she can really do within these big performances nowadays please watch the I Did Something Bad performance either from her Reputation tour or the 2018 AMA's.

Cardigan's music was written first, by Aaron Dessner. That's true for a lot of folklore; a good deal of it was her writing to track. While some songs have an autobiographical bent, most of them are just her trying to write songs that are NOT about her personal life. After Evermore was released, Taylor finally did a couple interviews; she told Zane Lowe she and Joe just discovered they _liked_ writing sad songs. Before the quarantine, they hadn't tried to write songs together.
Dessner got Vernon involved for Exile, and he stayed involved(but, they still haven't met in person); Bryce Dessner did some orchestration from Paris; Aaron called up studio musicians he or Justin knew for things like live drums and strings for some of the tracks ---- a "secret project" (musicians didn't know what they were working on, or for whom, until just before the surprise drop). The various interviews (like the Florida studio owner where the violinist worked) were cool; everyone involved, including the recording studios, were listed on the album credits. Taylor gave no interviews; most of the ones available were from Aaron.
The Long Pond Studio Sessions (like the music videos) were directed by Swift; she and Jack lived there at Aaron's home/ studio in upstate NY for a few weeks,. That's why they aren't wearing masks; when you see Justin Vernon (later), he was in his studio in Eau Claire, WI. Folklore project started with a text message on April 27th; out the door July 24th. Evermore was started in September during the filming; out the door in December. Swift then did an acting job in a film; and released the re-recording of Fearless, by April. Very busy year!
Aaron Dessner (of the National, & Big Red Machine) got a call from Taylor; she had cancelled all her shows, and wanted to collab with him (they've met before at a number of award shows). His work (w/Vernon) on a Big Red Machine project was also put on hold due to the pandemic. He had a whole bunch of music he'd written (for himself mostly) and just sent her a huge folder of whatever he had at 9 PM; he woke up to find that she had sent him back Cardigan (full lyrics and melody line) at 2 AM. If you look at the album credits, Dessner produced 11 of the tracks; Jack Antonoff produced the others. Tracks that list "William Bowery" as a co-writer were things Joe Alwyn (her British actor boyfriend) came up with initially.

I actually thought of "when you are young they assume you know nothing" in the context of the teenage triangle love story. It was said that August (the side chick) and the drunken James (whose perspective 'Betty' was written from) met on the cobblestones on the street before they started their summer fling. So the vintage tee, brand new phone, high heels, sequin etc were Betty describing August, and told James like "oh i'm young too, you think i know nothing??" because in the song Betty, James said "I'm only 17, I don't know anything".
But seasonal clothing idea is interesting too!

this song is actually a story, many of the songs in folklore and evermore aren't about taylor herself. a lot of them are made up stories, or about other situations unrelated to her. she talks more in the long pond sessions about how it was liberating to not ONLY writing songs about her personal life anymore.
cardigan, betty, and august are about the same situation from the perspective of each person involved. cardigan is betty's pov, betty is james' pov, and august is august/augustine's (the other woman) pov

There is TS "folklore" that this song is a love song to her fans who stuck with her through her ups and downs. The first verse making subtle references to TS albums, most of her fans were young and dismissed for liking Taylor swift because she was "jUsT a PoP sInGeR" as people used to say... "when you are young they assume you know nothing" but we always knew her songwriting genius and how she always keeps you interested... "but I knew you..." describes times we've all listened to TS "dancing in your Levi's, drunk under a streetlight" and when the media turned on her and a lot of her "fans" stopped liking her.... "when I felt like an old cardigan under someones bed you put me on and said I was your favorite" after the 2009 Kanye VMA thing... she disappeared thinking everyone hated her... she came back with Reputation and sold out an all stadium tour. She will always be our favorite. Full credit to chats and reacts channel Bonnie and Emily REALLY understand Taylor's brain and speak taylor swift very fluently, definitely check out their channel and deep dive analysis of this if you want the long explanation (mostly for the swifties who havent discovered them. They are SWIFTIES and it warms my heart) Lol. Anyway. LOVE these.

I definitely agree on the technical ability thing. It's 1000% more important to me an artist has a message that connects to people and can convey that with their voice. I've had this convo before, where if you think about many of the best artists both from decades ago and even today, very few of them would win a show like The Voice. And the reason The Voice doesn't make all their winners huge stars is that they're winning because they're the best technical singers, and though that's great, it doesn't always translate to having a lot to say which connects with a wide audience (though obviously there's luck and promotion that play a factor, but still)

I need to say something about the peter losing wendy thing because I think its brilliant !!!
When you think about the story of peter pan, you will learn peter doesn‘t want to grow up. While wendy always trys to convince peter that it is better to grow up because only then you can understand true love. But In the end he choose his freedom and life without responsibilities over wendy. It could represent how the narrator thinks about their own relationship as a metaphor.
Also later in the song it says „chasing shadows in the groceryline“ wich I think refers to the peter and wendy line. Because in the fairytale peter was chasing his shadow while he ran into wendy. The phrase „chasing shadow“ means to try to achieve or find something that is impossible or does not exist. While peter cant find true love because its something you wont expirience as a child, wendy or the narrator trys to convince peter that it‘s worth to grow up (or move on) and find true love. Wich is hopeless because there are maybe dark reasons why he’s stuck (mentally). At the same time the narrator is „chasing shadows“ because its hopeless to hold on to this love because this person isn’t able to feel the same way, so their love maybe only existed in their fantasy 🤯
It’s my interpretation please do not hate me + I‘am from germany so excause my bad english…

"Leaving like a father" is such an underrated lyric. Father's in general keep you safe and secure and protect you from the world, they're always there even though they don't really show it to you. When fathers leave, it's like that faith and safety is compromised. She felt as if her safety and faith were taken away from her when the guy cheated on her.

After watching Bonnie and Emily (Chats and Reacts here on yt) breakdown of folklore I would personally add the 1, cardigan, mad women and the lakes to that list. I quite enjoy their insight to Taylor’s music.
      the 1 - Big Machine
      cardigan - her fans
mad women - Scooter (my tears ricochet is Scott)
      the lakes - Joe

While her parents did separate (back around 2011), both are still part of her management team; the song is about a fictional character. You learn her name in another song (from the boyfriend's POV). Incidentally, you are going a bit too deep into the fashion; she is famous (or infamous) for using details to describe a moment. Song is written from the POV of a woman looking back at a moment in her junior high days. Taylor loves clothes, dress up, and sparkly things. If you look back at her very early performances, she completely covered a Taylor Guitar top in rhinestones for her stage shows (when she wasn['t using a custom Koa). Taylor Guitars LOVED her; her music boosted sales of guitars and ukuleles by a big factor for ALL the instrument makers, before she got interested in the sound of synth-pop. She was popular with teens, her songs weren't super difficult to learn and play.

Cardigan is one of the songs in the love triangle, betty and august. Also, I feel like these would make more sense and you'd like them more if you actually watched the long pond sessions(where these performances came from) because in between the songs she explains the songs, lyrics, melodies, etc. I know it'd be hard to put on youtube, but just a thought!

There are several cameras at different fixed angles, as well as some robotic controls. There were no camera personnel at Long Pond; Justin had someone in WI though. Taylor set it up so she could control the recording process. What you are doing is zooming in, or jumping from one camera to another; splicing them together in editing. One thing that is amazing is that none of the actual cameras get picked up in filming. Producing and co-producing those years of music videos has helped her out here.

hey! I really hope this comments makes its way to you. cardigan (like most of the songs on folklore) is about something separate from herself, but she sprinkles in elements of her real life. with cardigan, it’s actually part of a trio of songs that tell a story on the album, along with “august” & “betty”. it’s all three sides of a love triangle told from each person. betty is the perspective of the guy that cheated, cardigan is bettys POV, & august is from the POV of the girl he cheated with. :) I HIGHLY recommend looking up the meaning of each song on this album after listening! taylor explained all of them live in the long pond sessions, you can find the explanations on UA-cam. thank you for your reactions & for treating this with so much care.
