  • I had no idea that Taylor and Justin Vernon from BON IVER had ever worked together. Their voices sound amazing on this track, and somehow they're able to do it from hundreds of miles away. Also, I am FINALLY watching the Disney+ versions of these songs, so I discuss the opening scene as well.

The reason she is so nervous about asking Justin to be in the song is that Taylor has always craved the recognition from her peers not as a successful act, but as a talented one. For a lot of years people doubted Taylor's talent because of being a main pop girl, and if you follow her career and interviews and understand why she wrote Speak Now by herself you understand that deep down even after Reputation she is just deeply insecure about how people respected in the industry view her as a true peer and not just "a pop girl"

And to expand (based on Andrew's comment about why someone wouldn't want to do a duet with T Swift), I think Justin absolutely would have turned her down if he didn't like the song.

That has always struck me as a bit weird based on the two things... The number of professional awards she has won that are not fan voted and the number of legends that been guest artists at her shows and gush about her all the time....I mean a Steven Tyler doesn't get on stage and sing with just anyone. Def Leppard, although there is a family connection there, Bryan Adam's, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Robbie Williams and the list just goes on.....
I've always wondered if she suffers from a case of imposter syndrome....I'm nowhere near as good in what I do as she is but I suffer from that

i think the reason why joe used a pseudonym was to prevent the media from focusing on him (as her boyfriend) being a part of the album rather than the album itself when the album first came out. and then the later reveal was to help start conversations on the album again as a fun fact.

Also, just so you know Joe and Taylor write the most sad, fcked up songs together because they both love sad songs not because they have gone through any rough patch that we know of. In fact as a fandom we have a popular meme that says "Joe arriving home and seeing that Taylor is writing another song about them hypothetically breaking up" and "Taylor arriving home and seeing that Joe is writing another song about them hypothetically breaking up" because they both do it and its funny if not a little weird

Taylor is very protective of her relationship with Joe, she rarely ever talks about him because she fears that something bad might happen to them because of the media (She’s learned from her last relationships). She has started to open up about him but very VERY briefly and It took her about 4 years to talk about him this “much”.
Anyway this is probably why his real name wasn’t used. And honestly I think the only reason she revealed that Joe was William Bowery is because fans started speculating a lot haha so she just decided to throw us the bone.

Well, Taylor and Joe are really private about their relationship. Actually, this was the first time Taylor has ever said "Joe" publically. There's not even an "oficial" photo of them, they are all paparazzi's candids.
They probably did it so that way the album and songs they wrote together wouldn't be overshadowed by tabloids... or something like that. So the focus was "who is William?", but it wasn't like a big deal
    Edit: typo, ups

I love the last bit of this. It depicts how couples argue. They were singing on top of each other, spitting back and forth, they keep talking about their side, no one's listening to the other person, they want to push their own narrative. It is a beautiful arrangement showing the pain of an argument and how frustrating it is..

  • @Musicpediapedia

I don’t think this song is autobiographical. People joke that Taylor and Joe just roleplay breaking up for fun, they must be super solid because they even wrote a song about a relationship being ruined because the guy proposed (and as far as we know they aren’t even engaged).

    • @robertthompson7242

When the album came out, Taylor didn't do the sort of interviews she used to do, or that she resumed doing for Lover. She let Aaron Dessner get the limelight for it; she didn't interview until a Jimmy Kimmel appearance, and Apple Music (Zane Lowe) interview after Evermore. But she made it plain that she and Joe both just _like_ sad songs.

    • @SyedSaifAbbasNaqvi

I think Joe and Taylor are not like that. Also Joe seems to be good at this framing stories for songs. Taylor mostly derived from her life long enough. Now after meeting Joe she has found this middle ground. She was already an OG in songwriting. Now these two have started framing stories from may be not something happened to them but other things. No body no crime is a prime example to that. It's awesome.

Folklore is like a collection of essays on very random but specific elements of the human condition. They are stories about certain people and at the same time about everyone. Like actual folklore. :) Most of them are not literally related to Taylor’s own life, though some of them are (metaphorically).

many comments explaining Joe using a pseudonym but another reason is that it's fun! Taylor knows Swifties like mysteries and easter eggs and want to be kept guessing, so she does it for us! Another example of this is a mysterious cover of her song, Look What You Made Me Do was used on a 2020 episode of the British show Killing Eve. The credited artist was Jack Leopards and the Dolphin Club. Swifties did some FBI-level decoding and found out this was actually her brother, Austin Swift.

this documentary (and the reveal about william bowery) was released in November, 4 months after the album was released. So the "taylor writes with her boyfriend" narrative was not a highlight or was not used to promote the album and the media never had the chance to use that as a headline to get clicks when the folklore hype was at its peak. And the fact that she doesn't even talk about him. They're so private. So this little detail would have been such a huge deal if his actual name was there. It would've overshadowed the actual brilliance of the album and the other collaborators.

What I love about this song is I feel like it so perfectly encapsulates what's going on in like 70% of breakups and divorces - one party feeling blindsided by it, having no idea how broken down the relationship really was, and the other party feeling like they gave so many chances, they gave so many signs that there were all these problems, and they're just exhausted and can't do it anymore. Regardless of which side of the story is more accurate in any given case, I feel like this is the story I hear over and over again about the breakdown of serious romantic relationships.

  • @Mary-ks2kc

I think the main reason for the pseudonym is that they didn’t want them writing together to be the story and distract from the actual music in any way or influence people’s opinion on it. This reveal was months after the album came out. She’s used a pseudonym the same way several times in her career when she’s written for other artists so the song could be judged on its merits without her involvement influencing opinions or becoming the main story. Plus she just likes a mystery!

@@Mary-ks2kc She was always listed on the album credits, and was awarded a CMA award for Song of the Year in 2017 as the writer.
Big Machine might have kept it quiet until the album dropped, though. I didn't hear it on the radio, so I don't know how it was introduced. Taylor was kind of keeping a low profile then (late 2016).
Little Big Town was another Big Machine act; so were The Civil Wars (Safe & Sound;) and Sugarland (Babe). So, those were sort of "in House".
Most of the award nominations were for the group/duo performance, the video, or top country song; but aside from the CMA's, the song didn't win as a song, but as a recording; which puts the emphasis on LBT.
Thing is, Taylor wrote Better Man and Babe for the Red album in 2012 , and didn't use them; the song she wrote for Harris was always _intended_ for Rihanna.
She usually collabs on things for her own albums; but fwiw, she did a collab with B.o.B. (Both of Us) where she _didn't_ co-write it. I'd like to know if there are more, if you know any I missed.

Little Big Town has never been signed to Big Machine? Them and Taylor probably just agreed they wanted the first impression of the song to be influenced by any of the narrative or backlash around Taylor at that time.
You forgot her collab with Boys Like Girls, Two is Better Than One and she also collaborated with John Mayer on Half of My Heart but she’s not listed as a feature for her vocals on it. And I Don’t Want to Live Forever with Zayn.

My favorite line is 'Stepping out the side door.' Because it adds a layer of how emotionally exhausting this relationship was. Leaving out a front door is like a big exit, like, 'we're going to have this huge fight that everyone's going to see, and then storm out.' The back door is more secretive and salacious, more of 'we had this secret affair and no one can know about it.' This is like this feeling of 'I don't feel like dealing with this, I've cried enough, and I'm done.' It's like that feeling that whatever closure is out there isn't worth crying in the bathroom over.

There are just a few songs on Folklore and Evermore that are about her personal life. On Folklore Invisible String and Peace are the most obvious ones. Invisible String is like a summery of their relationship from the beginning to now. I really like it. The lyrics are great. There are songs that have some personal influences as well like My Tears Riccochet but they are very subtile and can be interpreted as storys about fictional characters as well. I love the albums for that. They really show how much she's matured as a songwriter.
There is an interview with Taylor from Apple Music for her win as songwriter of the year were she explains a lot of the writing process of Folklore and Evermore. Maybe it would be interesting for you but you should wait until you listened to both albums because there are a lot of spoilers. There she said that she was afraid of writing about fictional characters because she thought fans and people wouldn't be interested in them. For me Evermore is even more fictional because of the immense success of Folklore and how positive the response was. She got more confidence through it.
She went through a lot of bad stuff after 1989 with the media and the public. She even disappeared for a year and thought about ending her career because of it. There's still negativity even if it's not to loud anymore. I think that's why she was expecting Bon to say no. Her documentary Miss Americana explains a lot of her past and we're she's coming from. Peace is also about that stuff. She's still afraid of loosing her relationship just because she is who she is. It's really sad if you think about it.

She was self conscious about not knowing if Justin would want to be on the song not only for what others commented, but she has shared her love for Joni Mitchell many times and there was a rumor that T was gonna play her in a biopic of her life many years ago I think during the 1989 era. Joni came out and said something like she was just a girl with high cheekbones and has never listened to her music before so she wished her good luck if T was gonna sing and play her (obviously not genuinely lol), so I think it really affected T. (I also think the biopic wasn't approved by Joni, so I do feel for her that someone would try that without her permission)
Bon iver and big red machine are her favorite artists with her boyfriend Joe, so I imagine it was nerve-wracking.

Also fun fact- My interpretation of the bridge where Justin and Taylor sing over each other is that it's probably meant to sound like a sad little argument between them going back and forth about what the other person didn't do and possibly why the relationship failed. So its like a very melodic fight happening right there. There maybe more explanations but I really like this one. Nice job! Almost forgot to say it. 👍👍 So, some background details. Not spoilers, I think.
Taylor blew up so fast, so young, that she was always nervous the audience would move on to someone else. In some early interviews, she was quite public about being a worrier; she worries about everything (and she gets roasted for it several times on The Ellen show). But she has also collab'ed with some major artists (who then dated her---and broke up quite publicly). First was John Mayer (Half of My Heart was co-written; she sings on it); then Calvin Harris (her relationship was sooo public, and the song was being written specifically for Rihanna). She used a pseudonym for that song, so the reception of the song would be because of the music, not the tabloids. (The name is on one of the gravestones of the LWYMMD video, with all her past selves).
Joe Alwyn comes from a family with a public background: his father is a filmmaker, his great grandfather, William Alwyn, was a famous composer. The Bowery Hotel was the site of one of their first (dates? meetings?). Swifties glommed onto the name in seconds. Their obsession with details is frightening, in a way. (I don't do social media; I get it when it makes news).
I've read that his mother is a psychologist. Taylor likes him so much, because he is so "grounded." He came to her attention at a premiere of ‘Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk,’ and he's been busy acting non-stop since. He didn't particularly want a career in music (although he is trained in vocals for musicals on stage). You should also know, that Taylor herself likes acting, has dated Taylor Lautner Jake Gyllenhaal, and Tom Hiddleston; and her brother Austin is an actor and filmmaker. iow, she is mostly attracted to highly creative people in performing arts. Be fair--- who else does she meet?
When you listen to reputation album, there is a reference to his buzz-cut, and her bleached hair - it is that summer, 2016. A good year for tabloid drama, a bad year for Taylor -- it is also when Kanye re-kindled their public feud. She was trolled off the internet for awhile. Joe's brand of personal anonymity and privacy must have been like heaven to her at that point; and they both maintain it almost all the time. Her Reputation and Lover, while making satirical jabs at her detractors, are both just love songs for Joe.

::pushes up TS nerd glasses:: (credit to Chats and Reacts Bonnie and Emily) Exile (and an underlying theme of Folklore in general) is rumored to be about Scott Borchetta and her masters being sold, specifically the line about "leaving out the side door" she tried to buy her masters and leave the label quietly. Love is a universal language which Taylor uses to show how love and heartbreak metaphors can equate to different emotions and what it feels like to lose your entire life's work WOULD feel like the worst heartbreak in your life, IMO that is where she pulls the emotion for these songs even though she is happily squirreled away with Joe giggling over our crazier and crazier theories. ❤️

Because Joe Alwyn aka WIlliam Bowery is an actor...so it was really surprising to know that he's one of the creator of this masterpiece Exile :D

I think the reason behind the pseudonym was to provide a barrier between "actor Joe Alwyn" and "songwriter William Bowery". Taylor had done the pseudonym thing with her ex, Calvin Harris when she co-wrote "This Is What You Came For" as "Nils Sjöberg". She did this so people wouldn't see the couple as a marketing/public stunt which often happen to celebrity couples. But in an interview where Calvin was asked if he'd ever work with Taylor, he straight up said never, so that kinda pissed her off because he could've gone roundabout about it instead of lying. Ig that's why with Joe, she took this direction.
And idk how the money works for songwriter credits and whatnot but I do know that when Folklore won a Grammy, Joe definitely was credited. If you google "joe alwyn grammy", it'd say he has 1 grammy lmao

This version is nice, you might also just take a moment to listen to the studio version, too; they layered their vocals quite differently. At least 3 layers, and not together so much until the end. Don't interrupt your flow, that is just something you might listen to later for contrast. FWIW, too, Taylor directed the film, so likely there is some editing. She couldn't bring the cats to NY. 🙄 But she didn't use auto-tune much in the past except for (really really obvious) effect on just a few songs.

One thing, the media likes to tear Taylor down, in the past years. They always criticized her on whoever she's dated. So now she's keeping her relationship really really private. Not one official photo together, not mentioning Joe's name in public ( this is the first time) in some interview she just refer him as 'he' 'my boyfriend'
And I think this is working really well for them.
There has been many speculations about William Bowery from the detectives( swifties) haha.
Swifties are really really good at decoding stuff so I think taylor had no choice but to admit it.
Shes been heavily criticized before and wants to prove herself. After her second Album' Fearless' (most awarded country album till now) came out she was still very young. Critics have always doubted that she writes her own songs. So she took this as a challenge and wrote 'speak now' album on her own entirely. BUT then years later she transitioned to POP and became super successful but also Most snobs now ovelooked her songs because 'too poppy' 'too popular' but they dont even listen to the NON -SINGLES which are Gems really. She's always been this good as a songwriter , people just dont give her a chance. :)

I’m sure there were multiple reasons for Joe using a pen name but my guess is that since Joe is an actor, they wanted to keep his acting career and music career separate. There’s already the difficulty that when you google Joe Alwyn, lots of stuff about Taylor comes up, so if they used his name directly on a Taylor Swift album (that went on to win AOTY), then stuff about his music career would further drown out everything about his acting career. (Plus it was a fun little mystery to keep the Swifties occupied lol)

I really think there wouldn't be many people rejecting a duet with Taylor, but at the time, Bon Iver's fans were saying so many mean things about their collab, what if the artist is just as arrogant as their fans? You never know.

Ikr. Some of the fans had and still have the worst things to say. One even want as far to say that Justin will end up regretting his involvement with her music. Others refuse to listen to the songs. Others claim she just “used” Justin “like she has her entire career using other people’s talent to climb the ladder”. Other people hate the BRM songs she is and they skip over them. Some are convinced she didn’t write the lyrics, bring up 15-yr old questions that were answered long ago. But now, I see these Bon Iver fans questioning it. And are convinced that Aaron co-wrote the some lyrics so obviously the songs are about him. Sad song …. Must be about Aaron. it’s really sad.

@@jessicawhittemoore7829 I don’t know. It must be so disheartening to work so hard, writing songs and tying to get a record deal, convincing people you are a songwriter, continuing to work harder than anyone else in the business and have it pay off, and finally be at a place in your personal and professional life where it all just seems to come together perfectly, but a lot of fandom wants nothing to do with her, it has to be so hurtful.

13:21 no hate, just wanna question this part cause for me, i dont think there shouldnt be any flirtatious exchange happening between your partner and someone else. i mean i get that there are joking way of "flirts" im aware of that but when its just flirtatious exchange i dont think thats right. itll defo question your loyalty there. like what happened to me. i was confronting my ex about these flirty exchange she had on her commment and messages with this person and she always say im overthinking and only stirring things up but when we woke up 2 weeks later (no kidding, no exaggeration!) they started dating so like am i really wrong ? and just like what olivia wrote on her song (which i feel like she wrote it just for me lmao) "It took you two weeks
To go off and date her Guess you didn't cheat But you're still a traitor"

Folklore and evermore are mainly not about her. As some comments below state.
Invisible string and Peace, the Lakes. Of course the Last Great American Dynasty isn’t about her but the people who lived in her house. Epiphany verse 1 is about her Grandfather in WWII. Probably any Tears Ricochet is about her record label, but she hasn’t said that, but it is the consensus.
Evermore: happiness isn’t about her but is about her Best friend who went through a divorce, Coney Island and long story short are very personal, Marjorie is a tribute to her grandmother who was an opera singer, Closure is most likely about her label but some people think it’s about Kanye West but I don’t know, but definitely evermore (song) is very personal.
