Wounded Veteran here! Learning how to throw disk! Tried this yesterday and had some training one on one with trainer. Excellent results on this video because it was the same. I’m looking forward forwards to learning more.
I'm a retired decathlete and I have decided to throw discus as a 36yr old master for the first time. I had a PB of 46m (half spin), but was never able to master the full spin. What helped me was understanding that sometimes less was more and putting my ego aside (half-spinning) allowed me to be pretty competitive as a multi-event thrower. My goal is to be able to throw over 40m again. Looking forward to eating up this information! Thank you!
I know this is an old video and you probably won’t reply. But I just started throwing the Discus a couple weeks ago for my middle school track and field team, and I am in 6th grade. The farthest I have thrown right now is 61ft and this video helped me get to that point, so thank you! And the farther I have thrown before that was 55ft.
very useful and clear coaching points for beginners. i just started to throw in Masters comp aged 70 and I've never been a thrower. Achieved just over 24m with this technique. Good stuff John 👍
Thank you so much sir,my name is Samuel of 16 yrs old and this video is the reason behind the achievement of my gold medal in discus throw of the district level for inter school, this video was really helpful for me
I'm a captain this year on my school track team and I have to take a teaching role with some of the newer throwers. I'm fairly experienced with disc and I've gotten to a point where it's just a matter of making little adjustments to my form, but I never learned the basics the proper way. Now that we have new people who have never even held a disc in their hands, I've found myself at a loss for how to teach them. This helped a lot and I'll definitely be using these drills next practice.
Thanks John. My 13 y/o daughter just tried out and made the track team for discuss and shot put. Looking forward to learning and guiding her in her journey.
Hey @John Bowman! I just wanted to thank you very much for all your video tutorials for discus throw, because of it it helped me win my first time experience discus throw tournament in my university's intramurals. Discus throwing is actually a first for me, but because of your videos it helped me win. Of course it is my first time and I am not really in good shape like in highschool, so I just got to throw it at 21.02 meters. Yeah it's not that far, but I tried my best and practiced all your techniques in your tutorials. So, I thank you very much man. I hope I can send my videos and pictures here to show you but yeah it's not allowed in UA-cam comments 😅... And I hope you notice my comment.
I’m very new to discus and my coach told me to do it. I wanted to get the basics down first. After a while, I’ve seen very good changes that will help me. Thank you for this information. 👍🏾
been watching your videos and they are really helpful, i self teach myself since my throwing coach is often absent and doesnt put much effort, just pr 100 ft as a sophmore in HS recently and your content has been really helpful
Yo man just found this vid 3 yrs later. Ive never done Shot puts or discus throws, but my school selected me anyways. So im learning it at night, trying to byheart all the steps and body placements 😂. Idk man, i hope i can utilize it tomorrow. Also, the way u explain is so simple, clwar and easy to understand. If i ever get selected for these stuff ur channel will always be the first choice for me
my son (just turned 11) has begun to throw and we just found your videos. his throws now with little technique are 66 feet. Look forward to fast progression after seeing your tips.
i’ve been throwing since the 6th grade, now entering my sophomore year of high school. tons of throws, learning what’s comfortable with me, drills, videos, and occasionally seeing a throws coach
Brother I followed you religiously. I threw only 1 yr of HS and AAU/TAC/JO Programs and got 204' but it never translated in college and beyond. I did ok in JUCO and at SDSU but PR'd at 189'4 1/2...standard was 190' at the time so it hurts a bit. My point of this story is to say I could have used training videos like this. I had a season under Rink Babka which got me through high school but he was a beer distributor and had to run his business. What your doing is important and I applaud you🤙
Thank you so much I’m in 8th grade and I need to throw 80 feet to make the team and my best so far was 75 feet and 3 inches but I had no idea I was doing so much wrong and now I know that I can make it.
I picked up a discus and shotput to throw for the first time at 54 yrs old. I went to this trainer and he thought I had potential. I practiced for months but felt a little weird in the elbow. Anyhow, I went to doc and had to have surgery to actually move my ulnar nerve to reposition under my muscle. But, I am getting the itch to try again at 58 yrs old. The day of my surgery would have been my first Masters tournament and I looked at the results and I would have won for age group.
Iv've been throwing for about a month, maybe a little more, with a pr of 59' 4". The thing that's helped me the most is probably my coach teaching me how to not scoop the disc or drop my shoulder when I'm throwing
Just received my discus today so I can start practicing. I want to compete in the decathlon next year in the master category so I have to learn the right basis. You video is clear and well explained. Thanks!
Hi John appreciate all your tips, im a high school senior and train everyday, your tips have helped me throw farther from what i did last season, and i hope some more of your tips can help me get to districts this year
If this doesn’t work out great you should teach middle school via video you connect way better than us “old” coaches. Your style is reassuring , confident, and simple without a lot of clutter.
Thank you for your video. I've always wondered how to do this. You helped move my knowledge mark. First tutorial I've seen. Always been intrigued how this magic happens, biology and physics melding into a floating weighted disc that goes soaring as far, as far, can be. To your question: not yet. I need to buy equipment first. I know nothing of this field, going to explore your channel. Happy flying days to all you happy flying knights.
thanks John. I'm returning to masters track at 67, to no longer sprint or jump but to throw. Have decent speed and strength - technique is my downfall. My standing Discus is around 32/33m so would like the technique to pass 40m. I'll make use of this information and report back periodically.
