i am 65 years old and threw the discus in high school. I pulled out my rusty discus and was light tossing and found your video. I never had a coach explain the release. Awesome, it is inspiring me to get into masters competition. Thank you
Go for it! Kansas, Japan May 2021. Finland World Masters this year I think, also. Once per week try standing throws with a 3kg medicine ball. It really helps!
I know Im randomly asking but does someone know a way to log back into an Instagram account..? I was stupid forgot the account password. I would love any tips you can give me.
My experience is that many beginner throwers are either sub-consciously or consciously afraid that the disc is going to fall out of their hand during the throw. That is where the tendency to get the knuckles on the rim and "cupping" the disc or too much little finger on the release comes from. The cure is confidence that the disc won't fall while it is being swung (stop and it will fall out).
@@aretethrowsnation Could you expand on what you mean by "specific strength"? How strong the fingers are? BTW back in dawn of history when I was in HS throwing the 1.6KG disc; I used the forefinger middle finger together grip. This helped as my hands were big; big enough to "palm" the discus the way I would palm a basketball. When I went to the 2KG disc, I couldn't palm that disc. I found it better to keep the fingers apart with that disc.
Holding the discus correctly was one of the first things I learned from my coach. We practiced releasing and rolling with the forefinger many times. Its basic but very important.
I changed my hand positioning yesterday i got my PB from 29.6m to 30.8m after a few tries. I am very excited to see how much it can help after I use it a bit more.
What a small world it is Erik. It’s Claudio. We were teammates at Mt SAC in 89-90. It’s great to see you are doing well. I was searching for quality discus skill development video’s on UA-cam when I ran across this video. I will always remember you as a very talented thrower. A couple of years ago I began training & competing again as a Masters Decathlete. My goal is to finally become a more powerful & skilled discus thrower. I’m looking forward to learning from your videos. Thank you!
Claudio Andrade my man. How are you buddy. Been a long time and sorry hadn’t replied to your comment. Hope you are day and healthy. Lmk if I can do anything. We should catch up. Our Mt Sac team is considered on of the top 10 all time juco teams. We had multiple Olympian’s and so many guys that did really good things. Shoot me a DM and lets catch up soon. Great to hear from you. Best!
thanks so much for this i’m teaching the younger kids on my track team how to throw properly since they were not taught right and this helped me understand and explain to them more to for what they can fix
Excellent, good tips there. I noticed, with a good throw it helps to have as long a throwing arm as possible. That is,. No "elbow Bending" it shortens the throwing distance 🙂Fly high all
Great advice. Funny how little things can hurt you. Having lost and won Gold by literally 2 inches...this advice is GOLDEN!. Figured this out early. Keep up the good work...and good advice! VBM
This was helpful thank you! I've been holding it with progressively wrapping knuckles I picked it up from Elite throws coaching the first time i found out i held the disc wrong
Thanks for this video. I'll be trying out for discus in about 1 and half months so this was very helpful! Edit: I made the team! I'll be going to my first meet next week!
I was a decent HS thrower way back in the 70’s. I just started throwing the 1 kg senior (66 year old competitor) disc for fun. I am struggling with the grip with my large hand on this smaller discus. Any tips for a big old thrower?
I know this is a little bit of an older video now, but do you think having small hands is a big disadvantage on discus? I'm sort of a beginner deciding what events I want to do and I don't want to sink a bunch of time into something I'm going to be disadvantaged in.
The key is to get very comfortably holding and dragging the discus. Generally speaking throwing requires a considerable time commitment and everyone has their own rate of improvement. Keep that in mind. But small hands are not necessarily a limitation. Hope that helps
thank you for this, last track meet new school that hasn’t come in ones before so don’t know how it will go, gotten 1st in the past two, there is only 3 meets, so in this last everyone in expecting a lot out of me(turns out i have been throw wrong 😑)
Hello from Germany, i like your video, i already knowed about the most of it, but my personal problem is still there. I have long middle and ring finger, but a smaller index finger and can not hold the big 2kg discus correctly. Du you know this problem and do you have some tips?
Christoph it’s all about the angle of the hand. but unless you have a freakishly long finger. You can and should get it off the index finger. Angle the thumb away from you.
Sir, My age:15 year My hand grip and step are perfect but discuss can't long travel (it's (discuss) just go-31 mtr) Discuss weight-1.5 KG Please give more tips
I’ve been practicing disc for a few months & was wondering where can I find a place that I can actually practice before the season starts or like park or maybe even an actual facility because I’ve searched everywhere for months and can’t find anything that has cage .. I feel like if I practice on grass at my local park it won’t be as accurate any tips is helpful !!!
All you really need is a good concrete surface. Grab yourself some sidewalk chalk measure out an 8‘2“ circle. And that’s just as good. Cages aren’t necessary unless you’re super erratic and you can’t control the discus. Ryan Crouser was dragging a portable ring to parks during the pandemic. Or sometimes just throwing off of concrete. So the concrete surface will definitely serve you well. sidewalk chalk is like $1. easy. keep learning and put into the work.
Hey Erik would you have any recommendations about sector fouls with this grip? I find when i angle my wrist back like you show I have issues with releasing too early and often fouling out of the right sector, im going into my first outdoor college season and would like to get rid of this issue any tips?
we’d say look at your video. likely less to do with your grip and more to do with the position of your hips at release. this grip allows you to maximize the radius of the discus from the start (pillar 1) to finish (pillar 6) which is key for more “sling” and thus more distance. best of luck and thanks for commenting.
I can’t seem to get the discus to release off of my index finger. I’ve tried for a little bit but the change in grip definitely helped me throw farther even with it coming off my middle finger.
I have a middle schooler who is a pretty good thrower. His PR is 128. He just finished 7th in state. He throws it off his middle finger, always has, how urgent should we be about trying to fix that? would it make a big difference?
It’s something that will make a considerable difference. It’s definitely something to start working on changing on the off-season. Plus he’s gonna be going to a bigger Discus. That’s when it’s going to make a really big difference
So I'm in the U15 grade and I'm doing standing throw its reaching 36M but my coach said I can do 40M but my technique still needs 2 improve so I need ur help cause he doesn't always come
Really don’t wanna go off on some kinda tangent here but I’m trying to incorporate this and it’s really frustrating. I only find myself releasing off the middle finger and getting little to no spin at all now, I can’t figure out exactly where I’m going wrong either.
stevespyder k keep playing with the things in this video. When you do learn to adjust it takes a bit of time. At first then discus will feel likes it’s gonna fall out of your hand but that all changes quickly (as mentioned In The video). be patient. And done the sweet spot that’s just right for you. 💪👊

Often goes beyond confidence and becomes an issue of lack of specific strength and how the disc itself is being held.
