THIS is the answer to curing the shanks. I've been suffering from this malady all season long. I watched dozens of videos which attempted to explain all the reasons why the shanks occur. And offering complex solutions. Amazingly enough, the counter-intuitive solution of setting up tot he heel of the club - is the answer. I hit 30 half and full shots with my 58 degree wedge yesterday and all of them were pure. Confidence is what I'm left with. So thanks for this video!
This worked immediately. I cannot understand how this wouldn't cure you immediately. Remember to sit back a little in your stance. Why this works so well, is that it drops the club head down about two inches on the downswing and promotes an in to out path, giving you a draw and divot potential. After shanking for two weeks and nearly quitting, this change cured me on the first ball. I hit 100 balls today in 100 degree heat. I hit everyone straight or with a little draw. I'm an 18 handicap.
Good question - I stumbled across this drill today and it worked like magic. Went from shanking every iron shot to striking the ball dead straight. Wondering how long I'll need to continue this address but I'll do it the rest of my life if it means pure ball striking.
Wow, just had a break through tonight... I have struggled with shanking for years. Whenever they come on, I use impact tape and monitor things closely. I have read every shanking tip under the sun. For me, most fail to solve the root problem. For whatever reason, while hitting balls earlier tonight, I focused on keeping my elbows pinched together and facing my hips and keep them close together throughout the swing and what do you know... Impact dead center of the club face time and time again. This came after hitting hosel rockets 50% of the time. This setup tip is exactly what Hogans 5 Lessons talks about. However, I have never seen this communicated as a tip for curing the shank. I don't post much but felt compelled to relay this. We will see if this lasts the test of time but I am very optimistic.
I have just been practising today,, it was a nightmare every shot I hit, (i wanna cry lol) it started a few weeks ago, I will try this tomorrow, I have watched every shanking video on Earth (except this one) praying something happens good, If you read about a guy who was found in the woods hanging by his 9 Iron, it didn`t work lmao! glad you got cured my friend.
TheOkiedave Okay - this tip eventually stopped working for me. However, I do have them solved now. Put a tee just to the inside of the ball tell yourself your only job is to hit the tee (resulting in hitting the ball off the toe). Do this 15 times in a row and take satisfaction in the terrible toe contact you are making. After 15 times of successfully hitting the inside tee, remove the tee (but pretend it is still there) and start hitting shots. You will eventually find the center of the club face. Good luck.
I did try his tip and like you it stopped helping, Luckily a good friend got me to one side and told me I was not finishing my shots and my set up was wrong so i went to the range got a huge bucket of balls concentrated on every shot and lo and behold i only shanked 3 out of the whole bucket, Off i went to play and my game was nearly back to what it use to be and as an added bonus I got me a lovely Eagle, I will also add your tip with the Tee the next time they arise, thank you for taking the time to write and help me and good luck to you Sir!
I have used variations on this drill for many years whenever I find myself pulling short irons. Addressing completely outside the ball also works. I have been playing for 60 years, single digit handicap most of my life, never any problems with shanking until about 2 years ago. I have had no luck with this drill or any other in fixing the problem. It is so bad now that I'll have to quit the game. Two pros have been unable to help me also. Pretty sad.
I had the same problem, but definitely I would not encourage a golfer to address outside the ball cause this only increases the problem, due to I believe you will go further from the inside to the ouside of the path, instead of going from inside to inside. What it worked for me a lot, is to get as closer as I could on the ball in my stance, my take away would be encouraged to be far right (upright) instead of kind of flat, and down swing goes to the inside of the path. This helped me to have a new feeling on the path and right hand when hitting the ball. Now my sh... are really a thing of the past, fortunately. Sorry for my bad english here.
+Drbobcat Sonoma It could be your back. I run into problems when my back is really tight and I can't rotate properly due to my back muscles being so tight. Now I perform back stretches every day and it seems to help a lot.

Finally, someone explains this correctly!
This literally fixed my shank gives you such a good idea of where the club face is during your swing
Picked up a bout of the shanks last week. Couldn't figure it out. Tried this and it worked like magic ...
I suffer with shanks so bad I want to chop my hands off. This is the very best drill I have used and worked straight away. Thanks DL
gypsyschnitzer Well, you wouldn't shank it anymore without any hands.
Used this drill this weekend and it worked excellent. Best drill I tried.
Really does work, fantastic cure to the shanks

So do you now always address the ball like this, or have you been able to address it normally?

I've been shanking for ever. This works

Worked great now I am searching for dreaded toe shots!
worked for me in 5-6 shots!
Great drill. Thanks. !
(3 Hcp) - Jesus, just watched 4 videos, you nailed it ledbetter. Thank you. Will try this.
Love it when David Ledbetter says it’s made some people give up the game 😂

drbobcat somona - so now its 8 months later... did you have to quit the game?

From a longtime S word victim, this works 🙌
Really nice video
That is awesome info
Helps with shank. Yet i was hitting it probably 20 yards shorter
"There's a very solid shank"....priceless
I'm the king of the hosel rocket!
Oh you haven't seen me play lkl
+1 This worked for me. Addressed the ball with the nozzle, then my downswing comes closer to my body.
Why do you need to address it at the heel? Why not just address at the center and then try to hit the toe anyway?
This is sorcery
I shank when club comes from too inside...Will this drill help that?
So basically, address and send it like Luke Donald.

Hmmmmm
