I’ve been shanking the ball lately. I thought it was because I was hitting it off the toe! I never heard of shanking but someone mentioned it after they saw my shot. I went to UA-cam and found this video. RiverRuns NC Pretty much word for word the situation I’m in currently. Aggravating is putting it lightly. Especially when you *know* that you can hit solid golf shots. I’ll be trying out a few of these tomorrow as well.
I get the shanks from time to time. I realized this can be a posture issue. With the aid of a second ball and some foot powder spray, I improved my distance from the ball and got the butt end of the grip more under my chin. Further, into practice, I tried my four iron eventually getting the center of club face strikes. Conclusion many faults come back to posture and ball position.
Rick, you're an awesome dude. I absolutely love your golf instruction. Yeah, I've got the dreaded shanks. Scary. But it looks like you've handed me at least a couple of real solutions. Something to work with, and newfound hope. Thanks so much!
Thanks Rick, just what I needed. Now to try that out tomorrow. My PW has been shanking at least once per round over the last couple of months. Hate it. Sorry about voting for Pete in the FSX challenge. Need to watch what actually happened in that.
Finally figured out my shank issue… was doing a forward press just before starting the backswing and this was closing my shoulders. This is why I was shanking. Hips aiming right (for a lefty) and shoulders were aiming left. I was crossing my hips and shoulder lines. And yes it’s golf basics but these sometimes get lost in translation. Hope this helps others!!
Try this shank fix.. turn/rotate the hips thru impact (Yes thats it!) So if you stop or stall your hip rotation, then your hips have no where to go but closer to the ball. So the answer keep the hips rotating.. This may sound too simplistic but if the hips are rotating , then there much less chance of moving into the ball. If you have some other issues in your swing that don't let you have a good hip rotation, then you will need to solve those first. But ultimately, you have to figure out how rotate the hips, not stall them.

Thank you Rick!....and also to always never think that you will shank during a swing. Another bad thing to do when practicing is to be tired and swinging sloppy. Your swing path may allow movement to the toes of the feet.
@@lextersayson7769 Not for me. I have it figured out now. It's from throwing the hands at the ball while not getting the left side out of the way. I't doesn't take much of a swing error to cause a shank.
@@yukoncorneliusthelegendhim9751 It's has taken quite a while to develop a great fix and unfortunately, I still need it! I get the shanks when I get lazy with the turn through impact and too "steery" with the arms. The short term fix (while playing) is to focus on hitting the inside (closest) edge of the ball vs the middle. The better fix is to keep weight more toward the heels, moving even more back and into the left heel at impact (with arms at full extension) and not having any weight out over the balls of the foot or toes at impact. That will get your hips well out of the way of your hands and let you hit with all your body weight and good arm leverage for consistent power.

Shanks like anything in golf can be caused by a multitude of different things. I got the shanks and couldn't get rid of them to save my life for about a year. Looked in to all the common causes. Posture, early release, hip rotation issues. It was none of these. I was looking at the top of the ball before and now look at the bottom side closest to me of the ball before and during the swing and presto no more shanks. Golf drove me nuts for a year and I simply had to look at a different spot on the ball to fix it 😔

This is an athletic ability problem.
Sure you can mentally "trick" yourself into a fix for a while but try video, identify the mechanical issues, and work from there if you trully want to get better.
Golf drove me nuts for a year and I simply had to look at a different spot on the ball to fix it 😔
#3 is the key .. rotate that front butt cheek out of the way, away from ball.
Distance away from the golf ball is not a reason people shank Rick.
Never brag about your last shot. You might shank the next.
