    I know this video is from 8 months ago. But I'm a low single digit who has been playing some good golf this past month. I can't remember my last shank. Maybe an occasional 1 a month on a driving range but can't even remember shanking a ball In a round in several years. Had a lesson last week and was playing some sound golf. Then had a minor wrist injury and some work travel. Came back a week later and hit a few shanks, turned into more shanks, and instead of leaving it alone I try to figure out why on the range. Keep hitting balls and shank 1/3rd of the balls. Then I go home and the next day I said let me see what Eric reccomends. This video was simple and super effective. I immediately did your drills with the box. And I hit just about 50-60 balls with my 8 iron and 7 iron and not 1 shank. I'm not exactly sure what crept into my swing but I think my hand path was moving towards the ball in the downswing. Man I feel good and confident again! God bless you Eric!

    I’m a 6.1 and this crept into my game yesterday while on the range warming up for a tournament. Almost withdrew because it was so bad and didn’t have a clue why. I fought through and no shanks on the course, however some heel shots. I found this last night and am excited to incorporate into my practice starting today. You explain it so easily and it makes sense without crazy drills.

    I know this is an old video now but I've just come across it.
    Without any warning, I started to shank. More or less every iron shot.
    I used the cardboard box drill and it's fantastic feedback.
    I was ok taking the ball away but I was just slightly pushing the box after impact.
    It seems I was not turning my hips enough on the downswing so now I'm exaggerating the hip turn so I can create some muscle memory.
    Now out of ten swings, I slightly catch the box once which is a 90% improvement.
    Using the box method really helps you focus.
    Great instructional video 😊

    Thanks f. My game was getting really good for me.\(Mid 80s) and then the shanks got me. Used a small cardboard box which I placed about a ball distance outside. If you don't hit the box you can't shank it. Tried it. Hit the box sometimes but when I didn't it was not shanked. Mb thin sometimes but generally good shots. This is one of the best tips ever. My game is back on track to being consistent in the 80s. Thanks again. I will continue using the box at the beginning of my practices.Thanks again.

    thanks for this video. I have had some success with stack & tilt recently and was trying to improve my iron striking with it today at the range, but after a bit, got the dreaded shanks and could not get rid of it. After a bit the only way I could shake it off (and which seemed to produce good shots with irons) was by setting up with my left arm fairly bent and to the left of my body, rather than straight and in front of my body - which is the opposite of what most teaching (both S&T, and non-) says to do, which is that left arm straight in front of body at set up is best. I'm tempted to believe this is simply because I was less tense and stressed with that set up, but could there be another reason?

    I had a period of shanking and I tried all these fixes. I watched all the shank videos I could and although they would help to some degree, the shanks would seep back into my swing.
    I suffered from the inside out shank (good golfer shank). My shank made me breakdown all facets of my swing (club arc, path, stance, takeaway, grip, wrist angles, weight distribution, impact) which was a good thing. I went down the UA-cam rabbit hole for months. My swing and knowledge became better because of it.
    I was watching another youtuber perform a drill that had nothing to do with shanking. My solution was in this particular drill.
    I have a ghetto swing station at home where I can hit foam balls against a wall. I started performing this drill when I noticed no shanks. After 20 minutes of no shanking, I booked a half hour at my local simulator ( winter here so couldn't be outside) and played 18 holes shank free. I was thanking the golf Gods by the 6th hole.
    To my fellow golfers who are suffering from this demoralizing curse, I feel your pain.

    Eric, good drill. I used to use this years ago when I had a shanking issue. Now, I have a hitting off the toe issue. I actually do the opposite for that and put an object inside of the ball which works, but as soon as I take it away I go right back to hitting off the toe. Also that close up view of your iron was awesome. You can tell your hitting it off the center most of the time. My iron even when I hit it off the center the hit is coming much lower on the face. I am guessing that your getting compression while my hits are on the thin side. Anyways good video. If you can at some point address the toe hit issue. I know hitting off the toe can be caused by a bunch of things.

It's the opposite of everything I was taught when I got some help with the hook, the instructor emphasized throwing the club head out to "right field" from the inside. Hi Eric. In the video you mention to ensure your weight is not too far back which I assume is heels?
    Ive started shanking the ball recently and one think I felt was my weight being too much on the toes after impact.
    I started trying to put more weight further back in my foot which assisted me to get the the pressure in heel of right foot in backswing and heel in left after impact. This also eliminated my shank.
    Can you please confirm your views on where in the foot weight should be at address?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  2 роки тому +2

      That is 100% correct.
      Weight should be balls of feet at setup then back to right heel in backswing then back to left heel in follow through.
      Going too much toward toes in downswing is a big shank causer

    Appreciate the tips Eric, I’ll be taking this to the range. Went from playing some of my best golf to absolute shank fest, I’m shanking almost every club at this point for the past 3 weeks. It’s a bummer because the weather is starting to get really nice! Is what it is though.

    Does the shanking depend on early extension too?

    • @pigslefats
      @pigslefats 2 роки тому +2

      My educated guess is that shanking and early extension can both be a RESULT of an over the top move in transition (moving from backswing into downswing).

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  2 роки тому +1

      If you early extend (hips moving in toward ball too much) that can DEFINITELY cause heel hits (makes the club go outside the ball/target line like I showed unless you find a way to shallow it late.
      Left hip back as you get to heel and hand path up and left

    LOTS of instruction suggest swinging out to the right to promote a draw.

    The very best way to stop shanks are stopping playing the game. After 40 years, I quite the game. 8 hc to a dismal 20nin 10 years. Finally quite the game. Best decision ever.
