The thing that separates Guthrie from others when emphasizing speed, it that he doesn't lose touch with melodic content. Mood, emotion and technique are on display big time. There's a purpose for every move he makes. What a talent. Cool guy too.
It's the c-o-n-t-r-o-l the guy has. As much control playing long bends as he does when playing 32nd notes, his sense of humour coming through all the time as he stops and starts, never seeming to let his ego forget where everybody else is. So many people can play fast, but stopping at the right time is powerful.
@@josephsong8911 how do you even measure 'better technical ability' at this level? And what makes you think he *has to* tap stuff .... so isn't even close to SL? How do you even know what either of them are/were *able* to do? Did you test them? You make no sense.
What amazes me about Mr Govan is how little he uses his pinky to achieve the notes he does versus other top players. Not saying he doesn’t use it but he primary uses his first three fingers. It’s amazing!
I have watched this guy on UA-cam hundreds of times and in my opinion this clip is pretty much his best. Wow. Brilliance is often used too generously but not in the case of Guthrie. He really is that much better & versatile than anyone else on an electric guitar. Thank you Guthrie.
Mastery of the instrument at it's finest. I hope the Aristocrats tour the USA soon so I can see them live. His lessons on youtube are incredible and he inspires me to be the best guitar player I can be. Thanks Mr. Govan. Huge thumbs up.
tomyhas I also think! but this is not the kind of reactions have to live, right after he leaves drink this beer without even a glance at his audience, and so what do not know might think otherwise.
Guthrie is one of the most complete guitar players I've ever seen. He is capable of playing any style of music and just like Lufie Alice said he has a very clever way of putting music together. He's definitely one of my favorites and one of the top players in the world today. I've given up trying to figure out who the best is anymore, too many great players to narrow it down. Now I just enjoy the music when I hear someone that great.
He did teach at ACM. I was there doing the drum course back in 1999 when I used to pass him in the practice room going hell for leather. He was a lovely, quite unassuming man with SERIOUS talent. HAIL GUTHRIE!!
I remember watching this in the room, and thinking only ACM could make Guthrie sound as though he's playing through a line 6 spider 2. It's only Guthrie who could still make it sound groundbreaking. What a guy and what a player.
lol I love how I can scroll through the comments to this and arrive at one essentially stating how this isn't really "music" and it's just heaps of notes with fancy technique and then an adjacent comment is entirely praise for how melodic and musical he remains despite being such a high tech shred machine. Personally, I love this style of playing because it's so mentally engaging and really comes across as though Guthrie loves doing it, which makes me love it more and want to attempt it, too. But fucks sake, if you don't like shred or fusion guitar involving lots of notes and techniques being thrown at you, you are only providing yourself and the rest of us a disservice by bothering to watch the performance and act like it's no big deal and is boring and unmusical. Plus with someone like Guthrie, you don't just stumble upon his shit by mistake. You knew what you were getting into rofl
The thing I find very exciting about Guthrie is he doesn't have a trick, know what I mean? He isn't known for shredding He isn't known for tapping He isn't known for sweeping He isn't know for two hand techniques Can do them all very very very very well!
I think that's what makes him known for being a great composer and improviser, the way he uses technique to make the sounds he wants and to compliment the music is mind boggling
What I love about Guthrie is his command of speed. Especially that in between speed that you usually only see advanced jazz guitarists have. Not too slow, not too fast but flowing, smooth lines. Hard to put into words but if you’re a player you know what I’m talking about.and in my opinion it’s much harder to pull that off than putting a million notes into a measure.
exactly, especially because every single one of those notes has a purpose to serve, and they match the relevant notes of the chords in the background. it's mentally exhausting to pull off, so seeing him do it so flawlessly and without breaking a sweat is just bonkers
Javier Schiefelbein another player that has this technique I’m trying to put into words would be Frank Gamble although I’m a much bigger fan of Guthrie.
i dont look at this a class so much, as a performance. i doubt if anybody sitting there learned much, but it sure is freaking cool. monster musician from another planet
Hi there, I would like to apply at ACM, but I want to know if there are any guitar tutors teaching jazz, jazz-fusion, modal rock... The Eric Johnson, Pat Metheny, Guthrie Govan, Allan Holdsworth, Steve Vai kind of style... I am interested in MUSIC in general. Thanks
@@XJT0428 Can't really think like that. Yngwie paved the road for a lot of incredible players that came (decades) after him, just like Guthrie is paving the road for a new generation to come that will think that what he does is "normal". Leonardo da Vinci was a pretty damned good inventor but he never went on the moon.
what can be said about this? shure a lot of (exercised) pattern playing but overall its technical perfection including improvised elements. Personal style with a variability, guitarists can dream of.
He is all playing exact note where it's to be played and that means according to great classic guitarist Richie blackmore is like robot and bad player not searching fr anything...😁😁 besides that i wanne see ur comments on who is the better tapper between God Guthrie and God buckethead....❤️
Sweet...this guy's really fun. I bet both Vai and Morse enjoy listening to him as well. God help us if he ever listens to any Danny Gatton. He'll destroy us all. Keep on Guthrie.
I still think "Smoke on the Water" is a good tune. So.... what does this brilliant guitar playing mean for the rest of us? We need to practice more? I think what this shows is how far you can take a thing when you have talent and tenacity and passion. Thank God that music is enjoyable and important at many different levels of accomplishment.

That's the first thing I noticed to haha just snapping at the strings

guthrie at his most agressive.. 3:00

everytime he plays this track he's always up to something slick and in the moment

Amazing technique. He has the guitar strap set so his guitar is positioned higher on his body than most players; I think this helps his playing.
Thanks captain obvious
It's not that much higher, it's barely noticeable. Full-blown jazzers wear their guitar fucking high up
pkerlover I think he's just so skinny that even with the strap all the way up it still sags a bit. I have that problem as well.
Cool shirt, cooler dude.
Somebody knows how he does that at 0:36 with the wammy?
It’s a divebomb, he plays a pinch harmonic with his pick and thumb, then bends it down quickly with the bar
I heard that Guthrie is from other Galaxy
Gitaris Prime
shhhh.dat was supposed to be a secret ;-}

I can safely say that he likes via and holds him a benchmark, when your the best you look to who's as good as me

He taught at Brighton BIMM around 2006ish. Not sure he ever did a whole term at Bimm... Could be wrong!

I agree he is a very good guitar player...but when he starts to play some music?
His legato is almost on the level of Holdsworth.
but have you all notice the mona lisa on his shirt?
The tapping part of this song is actually the part I enjoy the least
Good thing Ralph macchio didn't have to face this in crossroads... his soul would have been Satan's by the first tapping section.
Alien
