I love how one of the best guitar players alive today, maybe even one of the best of all time does not have a youtube channel, doesnt care for most of social media and all you can see from him is other people uploads of his playing. He is like saying ¨well that youtube thing is fine but i dont have time for it sorry, I will just keep playing my guitar¨.
It’s actually funnier than that. He was staunchly anti UA-cam. Didn’t want to be filmed. Didn’t want videos of him being uploaded… but in the end it would be UA-cam that blew his career up!
@@LeviClay That is curious... as we see he was being filmed for things like Guitarist Magazine and in his masterclasses.. . maybe all that was after what you mention.
That's what I always thought. So humble.. Its all about the music. Not like all those instagram hipster fake guitar frauds who rely heavily on editing, multiple takes, post processing , mimicing, marketing, playing in a super cool home studio with neon lights and shit. Of course a tattoo and super hip hairstyle helps to reach the kiddos out there. Just pathetic...
All I can think of is "This must be how the audience felt when they witnessed Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, ect... writing musical history." Thank you
Crazy that Guthrie is more known (at least to me) for these awesome videos on youtube of his individual playing that for any one song or band that he's played in. I really wish he was more widely known. Love his playing.
I've noticed Guthrie's playing progress to a more "outside" playing approach, as well as more world/eastern influences. The guy is brilliant!! His voice of change IS the music...
Ridiculously amazing...Guthrie's from another universe!...and Levi's a transcribing beast...never shy's away from a challenging transcription. Nice job Mr. Clay!
first time I heard Guthrie was a magazine called guitar for the practicing musician. He was incredible then but he truly has just gotten ridiculously good.
Do you do the transcription yourself?? If yes: 1) Incredible pair of ears & thank you so much for the hard work 2) Can you transcribe Guthrie's solo on Eternal Life - DarWin ?
Well he plays in Hans Zimmer’s live concerts so yes - although Hans lets him off the leash a lot and stands there smiling in amazement. A classic moment is when a string breaks and Guthrie keeps going and grabs another guitar in a second and never misses a beat.
he can certainly play slide better than I can, but his ability comes nowhere close to that of Derek Trucks and tbh honestly one could argue that for overall ability as well. he's still great but i gotta give the greatest guitarist alive award to Mr Trucks personally
as much as Guthrie is a great slide player (and an out-of-this-world guitar player).......no, Derek Trucks is still much much much much much better....as blues slide player!!!
He's a great player but he uses the Berkley study technique to the letter. This is Django 2 finger picking and 4th finger slide. l saw the Aristocrats last year in Dallas and he's amazing but he's more modern degree channeled talent. l doubt sadly he will ever write one lasting piece of music like Jeff Beck or Jimmy Page for all his musical showmanship. Composition is harder than technician-ship on your instrument. Like Quayle a master on the instrument but cant seem to figure out how to write one memorable melody. Pete Townsend couldnt play lead guitar at all yet he wrote masterworks that will stand the test of time. George Harrison wasnt a technician but wrote melodic leads that we still dont match in modern music. Rick Derringer smokes these guys as far as text book savage rock melody and history will prove it. lf Guthrie thinks lm wrong he can write a Rain Song or Stairway and prove us all wrong. He has the talent but cant out-cool Keith Richards IMHO.
I'm so tired of these inane comments.... nobody here cares about Jimmy Page or Pete Townsend. We don't bridage the videos for Dazed and Confused with comments complaining that Page was a sloppy, lazy player that didn't know his instrument very well. Nobody wants to hear you explain why your favorite rock and roll pop star is actually better than a man who's spent every waking moment from age 5 to 50 fastidiously studying and mastering his instrument. And that's exactly what people like Page, Townsend, or Gilmour are. They're the pop stars of their eras. They played simple, 2-4 chord jam songs written to get radio play. They weren't as simple as modern pop, sure, and sometimes band like Floyd would experiment a little bit, but even during their era these guys were looked at as poppy, radio-rock stars that played simple hippie music. During the same time period we had geniuses like Miles Davis selling millions of records, Bill Evans on the keys, Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Parker, etc. writing intensely complex music that blows anything your favorite bands ever wrote out of the water in creativity and passion... but because "Giant Steps" doesn't have the minor pentatonic with some blues bends in it, it's boring and soulless... give me a break. Kurt Cobain sold records like wildfire... doesn't mean he's a good guitarist. Taylor Swift has probably sold more records in her barely started career than any of the bands you mentioned had by her age, and she's not a good guitarist either. Popularity means nothing except that their art is risk-free and easy to market, since popularity is determined by your record label's funding, not by skill or talent. If you care about guitar music as an art form, then you'll recognize Guthrie for the genius he has and the mark he'll undoubtedly leave on the genre forever. If you're here for pop music pentatonic noodling over 3 chords, you're in the wrong place and should see yourself out.
So what's your point? No one ever claimed Guthrie was a great composer. Is anyone complaining that Martha Argerich isn't a great composer? I bet these guys aren't very competent football players either, but I won't make a lengthy comment about it because it's pretty uncalled for.
Hmmm mebe that's more of a generational bias? Like the songs we grew up with will never be beat ... but of course they will in time... Like people thought Lizst was the GOAT at some point, he's still great, but his material isn't as popular now maybe? Guthrie's music i think will stand the test of time in one way or another at least for a certain group of people who love it but maybe not for someone who grew up with Led Zeppelin? And there is nothin wrong with that right? Like someine liking burgers vs someone liking haggis. Haggis is arguably older and has "stood the test of time" but man a juicy burger just hits the spot right... and by all likelyhood id say theres a future for both haggis and burgers lel
@@MarkVaughanGuitar I dislike slide guitar. But I admit some people really do, and I sort of like this example of slide guitar except for the pick attack and subtile string resonance, a problem jazz and clean tone guitar players face. I would be surprised if he couldn't, given his background doing sessions and as an educator.

Why a duel? I fkng hate all that battle of the bands, drum battle BS. It's music not sport. Go watch UFC.
Mark Wahlberg having the time of his life side stage.
Is he sick? Been following his career for years and he’s getting thinner .
Respectfully Guthrie looks the same he has minus the gray hair for the past 25 years
He's pretty good at that singing gospel slide style, but he's no Robert Randolph. There's other stuff I'd rather hear him do.
