Guthrie maybe the fastest shredder who knows all the chords and modes. But he definitely is the greatest rhythmic player. His groupings Subdivisions Rests His percussion And everything rythmic is absolutely perfect. Guthrie is the greatest rhythmic player in the world. And that makes him the greatest player in the world.
"Feel responsible for the notes you play...." ~ "The listener will forgive any anomalies they might hear" ~ this guy is amazing in his concern for the listener. How many guitarists prioritize this? Well, we all should, as should any musician.
He talks about the unemotional feel of shredding right before he ignotes his fretboard on fire with the friction of his fingers shredding. He can play/do anything. He once beat Forrest Gump at ping pong using nothing but a 1mm pick.
This guy is probably one of the best guitar players on the planet, the fact that he gets his message across in English to the more novice players out there is absolutely phenomenal. What a fantastic player.
His terminology is so amazing haha. Guthrie is the type of guitar virtuoso that will shame you in a musical shred off then spend the next 2 hours explaining to you why it was necessary to put you in your place and how he was able to summon such techniques and genius. In Eb minor 7 add 11.
Thank goodness for Guthrie's clarity of thought. Communication is an art I do not often associate with top class players. I could listen to Guthrie's clear explanations all day. And it's refreshing to hear him say when he's not sure about something rather than pretend otherwise. It was a joy to see him perform with Mr. Wilson on the Raven tour and I am very much looking forward to watching and hearing him play again in a month or so on Wilson's H.C.E. tour. If you haven't listened to his gorgeous emotive playing on Drive Home then do check it out.
He doesn't look comfortable in his own skin at times, but he communicates so well. It just shows how much he loves what he does and how much he knows about it. Love the guy and believe he is one of the greatest about right now!
He has the air of a man that's intelligent enough to have done anything - scientist, academic, great author, etc. - but his guitar hobby pushed its way to the front.
Not really a feel player though, too caught up in theory. I think when you spend too much on the technique side of things it's something you have to sacrifice.
I've been playing for 40 yrs and I've came across countless teachers to some degree or another, and I've never actually "heard" what any one of them was trying to convey to me, until now! Guthrie Govan you have explained in such a way that I "get it" 100%, and that to me is nothing less than amazing! You, my friend, are God's gift to players everywhere! You have re-excited me to a degree I haven't been in quite a while! A sincere thank you seems to pale in comparison to the true extent of my true gratitude.
Relates to the (all too familiar) questions, following with, "What you may be doing wrong". He then leads into ground up solutions broken down into concepts based on levels of proficiency, and finally punctuates the lesson with elegant summations. Not sure what more anyone could want. There is a heap of sage advice here. Thank you very much for all of this. My personal favorite was, " It's where you put the notes, not where the notes are."
First...GG is so generous sharing his knowledge. Secondly...he seems to be the most intelligent communicator of guitar instruction. Thank you GG!! Thirdly...IMHO...he is probably the most 'complete' guitarist ever.
Marty Friedman did a similar thing for GW, and sure enough implied the same principle as Guthrie: start on the right note, end on the right note, and play some wacky bs in between and its alright. Frank talk from the masters. Its great
I love how Guthrie Govan plays a lot of different styles, technical stuff, and improvises on a level far higher than many shredders are capable. Yet, BLUES guitar is what he loves and considers himself as first. Unlike most modern technical guitar players these days who often underestimate blues guitar for being "technically simple", Govan would rave about BB King, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, SRV, Allan Holdsworth, Frank Gambale and Yngwie Malmsteen equally. That's one of the main differences between guys like Govan/Hutchings and other modern shred players nowadays.
Myriad Pro I think you need to get out more ...or perhaps try listening to what the prof is emparting on playing the guitar - its not really about video production.
listening Vai, satriani, malmsteen, Howe, cotzen for 20 years. how is it possible I never heard of Guthrie? what a gem! what a beautiful day! a new hero on my list.
Guthrie is an incredibly proficient articulator of just about any subject matter. He seamlessly blends colloquialisms with proper semantics to achieve very relatable, understandable explanation. His brain operates at a high intellectual level.
Guthrie is now my biggest ispiration in music and guitar, every one of his songs is not only filled with awesome ideas, but flows amazingly well. Thanks for the awesome music mr. Govan, now I shall make my own as you said!
Guthrie Govan, in my opinion is hands down, the best and most complete guitarist in the world today. How is it possible, that I've only just recently found out about this guy? He should be a household name... and definitely somewhere towards the top of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time... (I've never seen him mentioned)... who makes up that stupid list anyway?
As good a player as he is, he doesn't write material like Satriani or Malmsteen....this is why people don't know about him...Clapton is a great example of someone who can't play shit, but everyone has heard of him..
I think he is the most complete gtr player of all time, and what strikes me is not that he only knows the tricks and technique of most Gtr genres he knows the melodic style and feel so well...
***** Oh yeah... Feodor Dosumov is another incredible player... amazing dexterity! Nah... I wouldn't be surprised how many great players are out there. Guthrie Govan is one player that's really captured my attention... he just seems to have it 'all together'. He has an endless array of tones... feels... chops... and ties it all together in a very musical way. He's a very human type player... very organic in his approach if you know what I mean?

Guthrie is a great player, a great teacher and communicator. I admire his abilities and I appreciate his willingness to share.
same lol. its not about his technique. his musicality and imagination is fucking insane. there are tons of techniqe players. like not only guitar the whole fucking classical music community 90 percent of them are just technical. wish we had composers like bach but all we have are virtuosos rn. more than enough of em
There is something very reassuring about Guthrie's way of teaching. His approach is musical rather than technical, and he never makes you feel inadequate as a guitar player.
Hey Guthrie! You have inspired my son and I to raise our own bars to higher expectations within ourselves to the next level. Thanks a million times over. Take a bow, you are due that many times over. Keep on doing your own thing and staying true to your own ideas, and we await you next great moment! Thanks again Dana E.
He conveys ideas so clearly, and speaks so well, I was forced to watch this. I'm a drummer. lol. There is a lot to learn about musicality here for anyone.
that's what one semester of literature on a uk college do to you, he left in pursuit of professional music career, i mean with this level of dedication he could do just about anything on an excelent level

I mean this in the nicest way, but where does this sort of extra-ordinary talent, musical knowledge, eloquence come from. Is it from the planet earth (and to repeat I do mean that nicely !)?. I have just about enough musical knowledge to follow what he is explaining and he does have the ability to break down, explain and simplify some difficult concepts, but that said, will I never be able to execute them at any sort of proficiency ?, I doubt very much !. I had the good fortune to watch him at Music Live around 2009 and he signed a copy of Erotic Cakes for me. Came across as a really humble, nice and patient guy, as he does in many of these type of videos.
I'm thinking the same thing. Possible ET. Guthrie is the best and by far. I read a comment on a different video from a guy who went to high school with him, said Guthrie was always a master at guitar lol
It’s nice to hear someone explain things in terms of feel and result rather than traditional theory (something that was positively discouraged in my day as being a lazy shortcut). I’m a pretty good jazz keyboard player but ‘playing outside’ somewhat baffled me until someone explained in similar terms i.e. you don’t actually need to learn new scales but just use your existing scales in a relative position, and each chord has a number of ‘go to’ relative positions depending on the sound you want to achieve. Maybe it’s a shortcut but it works!
Guthrie Govan totally gets it. He knows how to communicate effectively and fluidly in his teachings as he does in his guitar playing. Also knows how to set guitar tone and volume to appease the listener and not offend them with annoying squeal and noise...
Notice how much he cares about the "listeners" ear not being annoyed. There's something to that. We often play what WE think is cool but never stop to consider our audience, whether they can actually hear it or not..... If you were playing for accomplished musicians it would matter a hell of a lot more than a drunk and high audience.... but I think we get the point. Don't just consider what YOU think is cool. That flat 5 became extremely popular through EVH, and Guthrie is 100% correct:: It is not a not to resolve on or consider as an actual part of the scale.(quote) .."I'ts kind of the worst note in the world, and if you land on that, you're hurting people, really, really jarring note, use it in context as an ornament, it's not considered to be a 'melodic note' in its own right" ~ I"ve never heard a guitarist talk of the flatted fifth in a blues scale in such a careful way as far as its usage is concerned. Just listening to this guy talk is instruction enough let alone hearing him play..... amazing
Robert Covara yeah, noticed that too, Govan himself, and the UA-cam guys like Andy James, Ben Higgins, Rick Graham, and the Greats, Brian May, Eric Clapton, Allan Holdsworth, anyway i can name a few.. but dang! yeah! they're really good!
Guthrie Govan is the Merlin of guitar. His guitar is an extension of his higher self. Highly intelligent and artculate as well.
.....and above all else: Humble. A most redeeming quality which so many feign or ignore entirely.
Born to play. Born to teach. Govan is a model of dedication to the art, the skill, and the passion necessary to truly earn the title of virtuoso.
Why him and Steve Vai haven’t worked together I do not know

7x7655 - B11 (A/B)
8x8755 - C9
x85555 - Fmaj9 (C/F)
4x4454 - Eadd9/G#
3x3453 - G13
6x7755 - Bbmaj7#11
025212 - Em11
Thanks a lot

He is ;)
its allan hodlsworth, the only guitarist he would never dare to imitate even once

mattchurchill Why thank you.
mattchurchill I think he's about ready to try a Green Day song.....
Ori Fenichel Hell, I think he can already play Sweet Child O'Mine
Surely one of the nicest folks out there. He never says a bad word about anybody.

There is something very reassuring about Guthrie's way of teaching. His approach is musical rather than technical, and he never makes you feel inadequate as a guitar player.

What an INCREDIBLE instructional video! Demonstrates solid theoretical background in a very applied and "ear-oriented" way

He's so engaging and articulate. Listening to him talking about guitar is such a pleasure.
"The other one is horrible"...that one had me laughing for a while!
He's so awkward, but extremely skilled at explaining as well as playing. God bless him, we need more musicians like Guthrie!
God damn Guthrie can really reverse psychology a shredder. Love it. His use of English is about as superior as one could get to.
The way he explains things is beautifully articulate, as well as being very unique and importantly, accurate.
4:55 "If you land on that you're hurting people" lol I love Guthrie
It's ironic how this is called 'professor shred' when his lesson is all about how to sound good while *not* resorting to shredding.
Very good teacher.
..love the way he explains and goes real slow so you can catch what it is that he's doing.
This man is a genius, there isn’t really much more to say…
Guthrie is so amazing! By far the best fusion progressive player out there right now. His understanding of the theory of music is awesome. One thing that I teach is knowing the fret board. know every note on it. It helps with the shaping of runs.

Just listening to this guy talk is instruction enough let alone hearing him play..... amazing
no matter what you see on youtube - this the real guitar mastery.
Why does this video hurt my back so much?
"I would like to simplify it a bit... I am Govan, I am legend" he is a musical genious, and such a nice guy,
Have you ever notice, most of the best guitar player's have come out of England, must be something in the water.
