My surgeon said I have no restrictions. Do whatever I feel like. Had stitches removed today and fingers very stiff and painful. Wife just saw that I should feel ‘significantly better’ ….in 30 days! No wonder I have no restrictions. I could’ve used these exercises after pain was over day three or four. It’s now 10 days. I moved fingers vigorously immediately following surgery figuring I’d get ahead of stiffness while I felt nothing. Thinking that just aggravated the trauma and made the next three days so bad. Will do things differently for the other hand. Can’t be worse than this experience…I hope.

Michele what's your experience with patients who have had hydrodisection release for carpal tunnel vs. endoscopic release? I'm considering both options. Thanks!
Hi michelle…my mom underwent CTS 4 weeks back. Now, the stitches are gone, but there is swelling in the hand since a week and pain in the fingers. She also complains of pain in surgery site while stretching her palm. Pls help…n guide us…would be extremely grateful🙏
I had mine 6 weeks ago and the pain in my palm is so severe. I can't even open a doorknob because it pushes on the palm. Is this normal? I have great range of motion in the wrist but the palm is horrific. Tyvm
I'm so pissed off right now. My Dr. The supposed best in the Midwest for CTS gave me NO instructions any exercises at all. Only for a follow up in a month. Also I'm more than 36 hours out from surgery and my entire hand (except my pinky) is STILL as dead numb as it was when I woke up from surgery. They tell me that's normal. I call 🐂💩. I've had 3 surgeries in the past 2 years (4 including this) 2 full knees and a rotator cuff. The anesthesia wore off with 18 hours on all of them. I feel like something went wrong and now I have a mostly useless hand. So yeah. That's awesome.
After surgery, do we need to wear a brace at night? My doctor didn't tell me anything about that or of exercises, which I'm sadly having to look up on my own.
A brace at night? I had the surgery today my bandages they put on me are so big that there is no way to put any brace on that hand...you dont need that . Look at her hank on that video this is how your hand looks like after the durgery.

respected madam i still feeling same symptoms like numbness in thumb , index and middle finger even after surgery. What are possible causes ? My dr said your median nerve is compress badly hence take much time in proper recovery😢
Hi Michelle, do these exercises also apply if you've had endoscopic release? I ask because the incisions are in different places and not sure if bending the wrist (where there is a fresh incision) could do any damage? Thanks
I just had surgery today. My doctor didn't say anything ,I've got swear pain now my fingers look swell ,I'm following your exercise but it's hurt me more and doing this make stretching on stiches😢
I just had surgery 6 days ago and now my thumb hurts really bad. I did move my fingers very way I could. The numb is still there. Please someone tell me what to so my Dr still hasn't gotten back to me. This is crazy.
Hi Michelle it's been like a month and a week and I'm still experiencing pain in the wrist where the incision is is that normal? It's like a sharp pain that starts at the incision and shoots down the arm near the incision. Another question is since it's been over a month are these some exercises that I can do or are there other excersises?
It is normal at 5 weeks to still have pain and discomfort at the palm and incision area and in fact along the path of the median nerve. It really depends on how bad your nerve was compressed. If you feel as if it has not gotten any better than a few weeks ago then I would recommend to follow up with your doctor or see a hand therapist.
@@VirtualHandCare Hello Michelle. Oh my God thank you for responding I wasnt sure you would reply. The pain It's just in the palm and right where the incision is there's sharp pain when i move it at times and lift something. My surgery was 10/22/19. One last question at what point does all the pain in the palm and incision area go away completely?
@@niathenurse The pain should start to decrease around 10-12 weeks but everyone is different. You may not be able to put pressure on the palm for up to 6 months. Again it depends on your activity level, type of release, how bad the nerve was compressed, your health, and many other factors.
@@niathenurse Hi,I feel as though I'm looking in a mirror. I,too, had Carpal tunnel Surgery recently...{29th November},and,am experiencing very similar pain the pain you describe. I've taken note of what The response was from Michelle at Virtual Hand Care as well. Typing is a headache being only able to use my little finger on my left hand. The other fingers seem to give me nasty "zapping" pain if I try to use them. Maybe it's too soon? I am doing the exercises recommended by Michelle's Virtual Hand Care video, but every morning is a horror. This morning I tried warm bathing of my wrist /hand. Slight relief, but, didn't last long. I'm frustrated. the last carpal Tunnel surgery last year was perfect. This one is not so good. I hope things start sorting out for you. I understand just how you feel, and,I'm not looking forward to this lasting 6 months!! Good Luck.
I had endoscopic carpal tunnel surgery today (11/4/22). My fingers look like fat little and insanely swollen sausages. The fingers are also insanely hot and numb although, granted I did get a block near the armpit of the shoulder and at the wrist with mainly bupivacaine to extend the length of time between surgery and the onset of a CIDP exacerbation along with me having ran my maintenance dose of IVIG the night prior (11/3/22) and getting 50mg of iv hydrocortisone (because I also have adrenal insufficiency but am hoping that it will contribute to extending the time before the onset of the exacerbation as well). However, we are only optimistic for 72 hours between the surgery and the exacerbation onset with a high likelihood of it starting soon after the blocks wear off (about 36hrs post block placement) and the exacerbation starting between 40 and 48hrs after the block placement. Of course I already have told my ortho that I will be requesting OT while in the hospital to help with managing pain because I also have CRPS, central pain syndrome along with hyperalgesia and allodynia (because apparently my body hates itself, idk....). And he absolutely agrees with therapy to help with the pain because it will absolutely help with progress in therapy after the stitches are removed. I can definitely say that it's a good thing that my pain management team (from the same practice) has me on halfway decent pain meds (dilaudid by mouth and emla cream topically.
My hand was in a cast for almost two months I broke my wrist the insurance I had no one accepted it I barely got insurance and still nothing happening can you please help me with finger exercises cuz my fingers are really stiff. I cannot bend them whatsoever thank you

well mine didn't tell me to do any exercises... i had my surgery done monday, and i'm just now researching in to what exercises to use. He also said my stiches come out in three weeks. Isn't three weeks a bit long?
@@DreamingHearts yeah my first operation they sent me home and said someone from physiotherapist department will call you…. They never did so I didn’t do exercises for weeks and my strength came back way later than it should have so this time round I’m onto it! And 3 weeks????😱 no no no if they said you’ll need to get them out it’s 7-10 days unless you have dissolvable stitches then you’ll need to get checked up to make sure they’re dissolving. I also suggest a soft squishy ball ( I have one made for kids ya know with those little orb things I don’t recommend a foam ball at first they’re to hard) ♥️happy healing
Im able to do all of these stretches less than 12 hours post surgery (even leaving this comment only 11 hours since surgery.) Except for the wrist back and forth but thats mostly to do with apprehension and fear of ripping stitches and also bulkiness. I think it really depends on the individual and how their body reacts to surgery and physical trauma.
it all turned out ok. (no special procedures, just simple exercices) Swelling disappeared completely and strength is moderate (not like a healthy hand, but usable to hold a cup of tea, plate of soup).

How long after surgery do we have to do the finger tip and finger knuckle bend? I'm at 7 weeks and doing great, I'm just tired of this tedious exercise... My PT Lady says I can stop, but I'm wondering if this is common in your opinion. Thank you!
@@bmp713 mostly gone. I feel a faint numbness when I rest my arm against a high counter at work, other than that... It's absolutely gone. Also... I felt a lot of relief taking a natural vitamin b complex supplement. Not the synthetic vitamin b's, only natural helped the numbness and tingling almost go away completely before I had surgery. You could try that and see if it helps alleviate your symptoms. I would still do the surgery again it really helped, but the natural vitamin b's gave me relief in the interim.
@@Anon_E_Muss Thank you. Thats great you had such good results. Do you know what caused the CTS in your case? Was it endoscopic or open release surgery? Do you feel any pain in your hands or wrists after recovering from the surgery? Did cortisone shots help at all with the numbness and tingling?
@@bmp713 I had gradually increasing carpal tunnel numbness and tingling for about a year before I went to a consultation with a surgeon (who did my coworkers). I believe it came from my repetitive motions I perform at work. I had open release on the carpal tunnel. Recovery was fast, about 5/6 weeks? Did my post surgical exercises as recommend. Now no nighttime numbness or tingling whatsoever. Never tried cortisone shots, I avoided it and scheduled surgery because I didn't want to cause any permanent nerve damage by delaying the surgery. I don't experience any pain after the surgery, only when doing the scar massage for the first three or so weeks. You must do scar massage to prevent the scar tissue from accumulating around the nerve as your incision fully heals. Your surgeon will tell you when and how to do this procedure. Highly recommended!

It's definitely less invasive. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of research on long term outcomes.
question when should these be started( right when you come home after having surgery or should you wait til next day surgery soon
If it hurts don't do it
Hi michelle…my mom underwent CTS 4 weeks back.
Tyvm
2 surgeries this year right hand! I'm tired😢
I might have to wait a bit longer, lot of swelling and residual numbness from the local anesthesia the next morning.
My little finger is numb after the carpar tunnnel surgery. What exercises do I do?
After surgery, do we need to wear a brace at night? My doctor didn't tell me anything about that or of exercises, which I'm sadly having to look up on my own.
A brace at night? I had the surgery today my bandages they put on me are so big that there is no way to put any brace on that hand...you dont need that . Look at her hank on that video this is how your hand looks like after the durgery.
@@VoltomessNot True! @DreamingHearts had a great question. I just had endoscopic surgery and only have a large bandaid covered by clear surgical tape. And not around my whole hand only on over incision.
Great question!
@@hildamartinez8545 are you 5yo or something? every doctor can do whatever they want regarding bandages one can do it simple another can do 20x more. You can't just say OH IT'S NOT TRUE based on your experience because it's stupid, every doctor is different.
respected madam i still feeling same symptoms like numbness in thumb , index and middle finger even after surgery. What are possible causes ? My dr said your median nerve is compress badly hence take much time in proper recovery😢
what if I have a trigger finger’s surgery at the same time?
Hi Michelle, do these exercises also apply if you've had endoscopic release? I ask because the incisions are in different places and not sure if bending the wrist (where there is a fresh incision) could do any damage? Thanks
From my experience the same exercises are initiated. However, always ask your doctor.
I just had surgery today. My doctor didn't say anything ,I've got swear pain now my fingers look swell ,I'm following your exercise but it's hurt me more and doing this make stretching on stiches😢
Hi, I going to a operation for my middle trigger finger on both middle finger. Please share is it OK to do both finger at one time? Thank you
Your doctor should let you know if that is recommended.
Should I wear a splint at night after surgery?
Usually it is not needed but you need to ask your doctor what they recommend for you.
@@VirtualHandCare it’s been a month since my carpel tunnel release surgery I have no improvement at night how long will it take do you think ?
I just had surgery 6 days ago and now my thumb hurts really bad. I did move my fingers very way I could. The numb is still there. Please someone tell me what to so my Dr still hasn't gotten back to me. This is crazy.
so cute and beautiful physiotherapist.
just had my surgery and non of them tell me about this exercise
My joints didn’t allow that movement even before surgery.
❤🥰
Will I be able to write my exam after. 2weeks of the surgery.I have already done the surgery.I have the exam in november
Ask you doctor.
My hand was in a cast for almost two months I broke my wrist the insurance I had no one accepted it I barely got insurance and still nothing happening can you please help me with finger exercises cuz my fingers are really stiff. I cannot bend them whatsoever thank you
Lola Leath here is a link to a video I made several years ago but still helping many people with finger stiffness - ua-cam.com/video/jTIFzUEZMtw/v-deo.html. I highly recommend seeing a hand therapist as well. The sooner the better!
Does body need anesthesia for carpal tunnel surgery?😢
Locally
time to start playing video games
🤨
My doctor and nurses said specifically that wiggling IS good.
AND btw straight after surgery your hand is SO swollen it’s almost impossible to bend your fingers for the first 24-48 hrs.
Sorry your video had only given me SOME helpful info.
well mine didn't tell me to do any exercises... i had my surgery done monday, and i'm just now researching in to what exercises to use.
I also suggest a soft squishy ball ( I have one made for kids ya know with those little orb things I don’t recommend a foam ball at first they’re to hard)
♥️happy healing
Im able to do all of these stretches less than 12 hours post surgery (even leaving this comment only 11 hours since surgery.) Except for the wrist back and forth but thats mostly to do with apprehension and fear of ripping stitches and also bulkiness. I think it really depends on the individual and how their body reacts to surgery and physical trauma.
I can hardly do any of these because of the pain. I'm taking pains meds but it doesn't touch it.
Just play video games and you're good 😉
its 2 months after the surgery and the hand is so swollen that you can't bend fingers, not even if another person wants to bend them. too swollen.
To bad. Im going to operation monday. Im so affraid
Then something is really wrong for you
it all turned out ok. (no special procedures, just simple exercices) Swelling disappeared completely and strength is moderate (not like a healthy hand, but usable to hold a cup of tea, plate of soup).
@@ubuntuposix funnily enough, I had mine done on Thursday, and today I can't even feel like I've had surgery done on it. No pain, no swelling. Nothing.
Your trigger finger exercises did not work at all
Nonsense 😂
Hand expert?? What exactly qualifies you for that? Do you have any medical degrees?
How long after surgery do we have to do the finger tip and finger knuckle bend? I'm at 7 weeks and doing great, I'm just tired of this tedious exercise... My PT Lady says I can stop, but I'm wondering if this is common in your opinion. Thank you!
How well did the surgery work to reverse the numbness and tingling on your thumbs and fingers?
Thank you!
Thanks!
I appreciate the Superthanks!!🙏
