I'm an artist who doesn't often draw animals, and I especially struggle when it comes to painting characters who have black hair. But today I'm painting a gift for my friend and this really helped me get the basics started of drawing her dog who passed away. The tip of starting with base layers and blocking the areas of shadow and highlights really helped a lot. So thank you!

I lost my 7 year old male Rottweiler, my PTSD service dog, on April 23rd this year. I really would like to paint him, but I even struggle to start with the painting. I should have done this while I still had him. Now I'm totally lost. Maybe your video will help me do this, because you explain so good. Thanks for sharing. ❤

Going from Procreate to try acrylic, I feel like a complete begginer with no control. So much to learn, great video
It can definitely be an adjustment - but you got this! Just apply those same skills used in Procreate, for a great foundation in acrylic. :) I wish you the best!

I'm trying to apply these techniques to 3D miniatures so there's some shifts that need to be made, but its definitely got me started

Thank you for this!! I've really been struggling with a black lab. The reference was filtered and super high contrast, so all the darks were REALLY dark, and all the lights were white, but the dog was pure black. So when I tried to meet the colors more in the middle, he looked flat. Your video addressed EXACTLY that!! Looking forward to more videos! - S

Loved this Cassy. When I do black fur, I do use black straight out of the tube, but I glaze colours on afterwards, which, in effect, does what you say to start with. It's a technique that suits me, but very much enjoyed the video. And a great painting.

I'm gonna try this with my lowly £2 acrylic 12 colour set.
You absolutely can do it with any type of art supply or paint! I hope it goes well for you!
Blue gray is actually better than brown on a black Labrador. I have bred and shown Labradors for 50 years and am a AKC Labrador judge. I also am an acrylic artist and pint tons of Labs. Most black horses are actually dark brown but Labs are not. Some black labs will get a slight reddish or brownish tint to their coat when they are about to shed because the coat is dead but other than that it is true black with highlights being different values of a blue gray. The nose is never brown as I saw one artist years ago paint it. Highlights on a black labs nose are always grays. This was a really good video and an excellent painting. Good job.

I'd like to see the final pic of the Lab. We've had two loves Labs and one Black and one Chocolate would like to paint them, But would probably cry through the whole thing!!!

I got commissioned to paint a black dog on a tote bag. And its so difficult to paint on tote bags because I really cannot layer too much paint because they're bound to crack wayyy faster if i do so. And i was so afraid with this pure black dog. But your advice of adding blue really helps. So thank you so much for this tutorial. I'll try to paint this dog with as less layers as possible
