How to paint black fur in acrylics.
I like to tackle this by working light to dark with multiple layers. I like to get a good base layer in place and build up my details gradually.

Nice video, interesting process and so much inspiration. Have you ever painted a Chocolate Doberman dog? I would love to see you painting one. New subscriber. Congratulations! Blessings and be safe.❤❤❤
Thank you so much =). I haven't actually. That would make for a lovely painting. I'll get one added to my list 😁
Awesome
Thank you =)
What brand of brushes do you prefer for doing fur? Would love to know all the brushes you used for this? I think I noticed about 5 brushes. Awesome art! Thanks!
Thank you =). 99% of my brushes are by Daler & Rowney. I love them. Last for years, some I've had for over 5 years and they're still perfect.
I think he asked about the 5 or so sizes as well ??
She doesn’t tell you all the specifics .. because its a matketing ploy for her patreon .. which tbh is fair play .
Artists do need to make a living …
But yeah - she goes into all the small fundamentals on her patreon.
Generally though round 1/2/4//6 are the best brushes
& rowney line brush 1
Amazing result. Do you use any glazing mediums or only water?
Hi Christine, just water :)
Could you do one for short brown fur please am tring to paint a chocolate lab in acrylics
I'll add it to my list =)
Can you please point us to the link you mentioned on how to do the eyes? Thanks
I believe that was in reference to the slow version on Patreon. The link for that is www.patreon.com/zaratomsart :)
Is there a slower, full length tutorial on this same subject? I can only find the 16 min version.
Yes, on my Patreon =)
I am a subscriber of yours but can’t seem to get to this full tutorial (how to paint black fur). The link infers that I am not a member.
Are you a member of my Patreon on any of the acrylic tiers?
@@zaratomsart I think so? Let me look. I subscribe to about 5 artists.
Thank you for the excellent study! What color did you use for the glaze
My pleasure =). Erm... I used a few glazes I think. But it depends on the light source. Usually a mixture of a blue (ultramarine blue usually) black or possibly some dioxazine purple if the colour is a little warmer. Sometimes black fur reflects browns as well so it just depends. Something like this in the video more blues and purples in the mix.
@@zaratomsart thank you!
@@TravelswithLucky :) :)
How do you decide whether to do the dog in acrylic or pastel??
Great question! For me, this now mainly falls down to what my Patreon members would like to see featured as I try to tailor the content there as much as I can. But when I was just doing pet portraits and a client asked my opinion on what medium would work best I always decided once I saw the photos. If the dog for instance had a really soft looking coat I would likely sway more towards pastels as the blending can be done so easily at each required layer. That's the only real time I'd be definitely deciding between one medium or the other. Other than that pastels and acrylics are very similar in how we work with them so I'd let the client decide if they have a strong preference =).
Did you use acrylic paint for the purple glaze ?
Yeah, all of this was in acrylics =)
Just looking for the eye link you mentioned please
Hi, what size brush do you use for the fur's fine detail? Thank you!
I use many depending on the type of fur texture. But mainly I stick to my liner brushes size 1 and 2 usually.
@@zaratomsart thanks! My detail brushes aren't very good and lose their point quickly.
@@arikawithana3023 oh really? Have you tried the Graduate series by Daler & Rowney? They have never ended up damaged. Maybe worth a try =)
@@zaratomsart I'll give it a shot :)
You don’t say what colors or sizes brushes you are using 😊
The colours and brushes I've used are all on the Patreon tutorial. The colours are predominantly mars black, titanium white, ultramarine blue and dioxazine purple. This is my go to palette for black fur depending on how warm or cool the fur looks. Black fur is really reflective so it can pick up browner tints as well.
