Paint realistic fur - painting the edge/border line of markings/patches/colour transition in acrylic

- Hi all. In this video, I show and explain how to paint the border line between different coloured markings/patches in fur as one colour transitions into another using acrylic paint. Being able to depict these edges in an effective manner will help to make the fur look more realistic overall. I show painting black next to white and also black next to tan and working on smoother coat, slightly longer coat and also wirey coat. I give a close up view of my own dogs in real footage to explain how the different coloured hairs intermingle in the transition area and work on three different paintings. At the end, I added some relaxing footage of a recent walk in a bluebell wood with my dogs. No music, no talking....just the sounds of birds singing and footsteps on the path or dogs rummaging in the leaves. You are free to watch that part or you can switch off but watching until the end is always very helpful for me. Any constructive feedback is also very welcome.

Your noses are extraordinary!! Thanks for the Bluelbell walk too!
Thanks for watching it lol...
Very beautiful !
You’re sensational…I’m a massive fan!
Thank you....:)
Absolutely stunning! Thank you 😊
Thank you...:)
Fascinating to watch! I often revisit earlier videos to stay inspired! You definitely have a knack for teaching! I would love to see a demonstration on how to paint a white curly coat - I've been asked to paint a Jack Russell/poodle mix, which nearly has me throwing in the towel! Thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful walk in a bluebell wood! Looking forward to your next video! All the best!
There's no white curly dogs in my commission list at the moment so I can't do that yet i'm afraid. When it comes to white fur, don't work up too white too early. Basically paint in the darker values of the coat and then save just the highlighted bits for the brightest white and then the clumps and curls will stand out against the darker tones... I did a white curly dog in charcoal recently but not had any in the paintings.
@@TmHudsonArt Yes! I tend to use too much white too early. I went back to your grey poodle video where you explained the process of creating depth; definitely something I need to work on! I appreciate your help!
Yes, please make a video about hair direction. I paint dogs and horses and they are so different.
You are so good at capturing a dog's expression! You inspire me to get painting again ❤️. If you ever get time to paint outside of commissions, I would be very interested in buying prints of your work! The realism is masterful & inspiring. I suspect many of your subscribers would be happy to hang a numbered print on their wall, even if they aren't in the market for an original painting.
I have considered getting prints done of some old work but wasn't sure if anybody would ever want to buy them. I know a few other artists have struggled to shift prints.
Great, you are the best "dog painter' my favorite subject. What kind of brushes and sizes do you use ? thanks
Thank you...for detail like this, I use various size rigger brushes...
Love your video❤, may I ask what brushes do you use for paint the fur?
I use various brushes. I don't stick to one brand and often buy packs of cheaper small brushes
. I use riggers a lot and small round brushes.
These are three beautiful racing cars that you have ( Border Collie) ;-) It would be great to see your full tutorials on Patreon.
Please, could I have the full name of the brush you use on this video. Maybe I can find it here in Québec, Canada.
Thank you for the walk. A very beautiful magical place. : - D My spanish water dog wood very much like such a place, full of smell.
p.s. sorry for the quality of my english. It's not my mother tongue.
Hi...I'm using rigger brushes here. Most of the ones I have are winsor and newton cotman. I use size 0 for finer hairs and up to size 3 for thicker hairs or underpainting fur texture.
@@TmHudsonArt Thank you very much for the information. I bought myself the number one today. :-))
I love your videos! But im still trying to figure out what that wonderful paint brush is?. It looks like a really skinny extra flat "flat brush"... have never seen one like it.
They are called rigger brushes.....
Which wood is that? Is it The bluebell wood? x
It is a wood local to me...we have a lot local that get bluebells in spring..
What is a "rigor" ...?
Rigger...
fantastic I would say the yanks can't understand a real english accent
I have quite a few US watchers though...:D
