It astounds me that these people consistently use as an unironic "defence" a statement that is a joke (indeed that's how I originally heard of it - as the joke) precisely for not being a good defence.
College dropout Charlie Kirk questioning the qualifications of any black professional is pretty galling.
Especially since he was implying that any hire that is not a white male *must* have been hired based on race or gender rather than capability.

To steelman Kirk the argument he was making about the pilots wasnt that he distrusts black people to be able to fly a plane per se, but rather that DEI and Equal Opportunity policies would make it more likely that unqualified minorities would be hired in place of more qualified white pilots. It's an argument that ssems to make sense superficially, but falls apart when one stops to consider how many legitimately qualified minorities there must be in any given field. Furthermore, none of these hiring policies will ever allow for an unqualified person to be hired. The desired scenario is that if there are two equally qualified people and one of them is a minority, the minority may be given preference in order to make the workplace more representative. In no case is one person going to be hired over a more qualified person. At least that's the idea.
DEI is sort of like democracy. It's the worst policy, except for all the rest .
