  • This video is about The 380 caliber. In this video I explain the case for why the 380 is the best caliber for concealed carry. NOTE: I am not in anyway advocating that the 380 acp is better than the 44 mag, 357 mag, or 40 S&W for bear or boar defense. That is a totally unrelated topic that can be explored if you’re interested in me covering it.

John M. Browning designed the .380 specifically for self defense in a pocket pistol not to go to war with. It's an excellent caliber for personal defense.

Before I put a lock box in my vehicle, I used to just leave my firearms at home when I had to run out to a place where guns were not permitted on the premises. There’s not a more terrifying feeling than being caught out at night with nothing on you. I swore then and there that I would always carry my LCP max or my G3C(which is one of my favorite 9mms) everywhere from now on. There’s no excuse. If you can carry these giant smartphones everywhere in your pocket, you can carry a .380. Excellent video!

My neigbor, a former cage fighter held the door for a little old lady as he exited a gas station. Waiting against the wall were 4 black kids about 16 who pulled baseball bats out of their pants. 6:30 pm, daylight, 4 lane highway, 5-10 cars at the pumps and no convenience stores cameras. Although they managed to first hit him in the head then in the ribs, the first left with his front teeth back against his eye socket, the other with his throat crushed. Surprise, you picked the wrong guy. Down side, he was "only going to get gas" and his appendix carry wasn't there. And how does that go, when seconds count the police are minutes away? Try THIRTY MINUTES. You are on your own!!!!! And guess how many of the 5-10 men pumping gas came to his aid or stopped the punks. If you guessed ZERO, you are right.

This is true. Even a 25 can scare away a 6'4" man. And a 380 to an aggressive 300 pound wannabe tough guy. Etc.. Most importantly is the fact that a Walther or Sig 232 style handgun is much less likely to come out of battery with contact. And are almost as effective as a similar total length 9mm pistol due to longer barrels and faster target recovery if the first shot doesn't hit the intended target.

Love this video, familiar with Ellifritz. In your last argument the only thing you loose with a Ruger LCP is barrel length, thus resulting in loss of power. Can’t argue that… don’t know if +P ammo would amend that deficit. For the record, I bought a LCP MAX 12+1 for my wife’s daily CCW, just in case you think I’m a naysayer. 😉. I was in a gun shop a while back and a college aged girl came in looking for a gun for concealed carry. She commutes to school and drives a lot at night. She told the salesman she was comfortable shooting her boyfriend’s 22LR pistol. She asked about a .32 or a 380 and the salesman gave her a funny look and said she shouldn’t get anything other than a 9mm. After leaving the counter without buying anything, I pulled her aside and told her she’s smart for wanting to carry concealed and that if she enjoys shooting her boyfriend’s 22lr, not to disregard the .32 or 380. I told her 6-8 rounds on target are going to get the job done and that those calibers should not be underestimated. If some dude is trying to get in her car while she’s sitting at a gas station, she’d do well to have one of those calibers…especially if she’s intimidated (for now) by 9mm and isn’t carrying anything at all!

Because of people like that, pushing 9mm has the only way to go so many 9mm became subcompact for concealed carry meanwhile, 380s became has small as 25s. Mostly unreliable. And Miserable to shoot like compact 9mm "for most average shooters. Just became a firearm owner last year and decided on .380 ACP as our primary cartridge in the home.
    1) It's plenty effective.
    2) I like shooting it. It's smooth, doesn't recoil that bad even in smaller guns, and I feel more confident with follow up shots.
    3) My girl WILL shoot it. She dislikes shooting 9mm even in a full size gun.
    4) It's not *THAT* much more expensive than 9mm, especially if you shop around on the internet.
    5) Recently it seems to be making a resurgence. Options like the Ruger Security-380 (which I have on the way) and the Beretta 80X have come out in the last few months. In the colder months I can carry a larger .380 option then in the summer months I can go with the P365-380. I'm going to try a buddy's LCP Max soon too. I have an itching to collect all sorts of .380 pistols over time now!
    6) On top of the resurgence of firearms chambered in .380, there are a good number of round options out there now too. You can carry something with better expansion in the summer and something with better penetration in the winter.
    7) I'll probably still be able to shoot it fine when I get older.
I know there are a lot of caliber absolutists around that laugh at the idea of anything smaller than 9mm but in the event I ever have to use a carried .380, I'm certain it will be sufficient to stop the situation.

.32 ACP and .380 ACP were used for decades in Europe as full service firearms. John M. Browning carried .32 ACP as his CCW. If .32 & .380 are good enough for JMB, they are good enough, period.

Unfortunately, most 380 ammo tests are conducted using Micro 380 pistols with extremely short barrels. I carry a 380 EZ with a 3.6 inch barrel and found a UA-cam channel (can't remember which one) who was testing 380 round with this gun. It was noted that the slightly longer barrel makes a world of difference in the performance. I recommend that if you choose a 380 for carry, buy a gun with a longer barrel than the Micro 380s. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Very enjoyable and informative. I think why the shooting stats look the way they do is a reflection of the overwhelming self defense scenario...people aren't going to be shooting through doors or at moving vehicles like how military or law enforcement scenarios sometimes develop...if you can retreat, do it. If you can't, I promise you'll be able to deliver lethal shots to the chest, neck and head from the 15 feet or less you'll probably be standing from your target.

As a NRA Pistol Instructor and Maryland Qualified Handgun Instructor, I agree 90%. I DO carry .380ACP often as a civilian going to the bank or grocery store, etc... But when working on an average day, it is 9mm+P. On a day when I am towing a trailer with 250 guns to/from a gunshow, I have a fullsize 9mm in a drop-leg holster with 15 or more rounds in the magazine and another 1 or 2 magazines available BUT I also have a 380 acp in a pocket holster on my weak-side. I can still employ an adequate self-defense gun if my dominant hand or arm is injured. I can do a 'NYPD reload' (grab another loaded gun vs reloading the gun in my hand) if needed. I go by the 'dozen-rule'. If traveling with 12 or more guns, I carry 2 guns and the caliber is increased. Normal day is 1 gun in 380 or 9mm. Teaching a class - 9mm in OWB holster and .380 in weak-side pocket holster. Traveling to/from a gunshow, fullsize 9mm with 15+ rounds in OWB holster and backup 380 on weak side.

I also have a Walther PPK/s (I know, old fashioned, but I love it so much) chambered in .380 and I carry that one when I am out on dates or at fancy restaurants/parties. I feel that .380 pistols have excellent weight and are highly concealable while having enough power to stop an attacker. I live in an area with very hot weather, so I don’t like to carry bigger guns on me while I am either at work or out in public.

The ballistic videos I've watched convince me 380 is a viable self-defense round for my needs. I use a solid round usually in the Underwood Extreme Defender in 380. Length of the barrel and round velocity are not an issue as they can be with hollow points. Of course, longer barrel 380s can do fine with HP rounds. I carry 9mm sometimes and 380 at other times depending on how well my old compromised hands are doing.

I have the Sig P365 in 9mm. I also have the .380 slide and barrel for the P365. I just need to swap the slides between both calibers whenever I want and especially at the range.
I must say though that the .380 is so much easier to shoot and keep the P365 on target much quicker! I tend to use the .380 slide for my concealed carry during spring and summer while using the 9mm slide during the fall and winter as a habit. My wife also has a Sig P238 as she loves the .380 low recoil. The .380 is such an underrated caliber but also very effective! Outstanding video! 👍

I've shot many pistols and calibers over the years, but bought my first everyday carry recently. Got a P365 in 380. Amazing gun. I was going to get the 9mm, and had a lot of reasons to do so, but ultimately it came down to ease of followup shots, and if my wife ever needs to use it, I need her to be able to handle it as well. With a 380 that is much more likely. I have shot the 9mm and 380 versions back to back, and I gotta say the 380 is a pleasure to shoot. The 9mm isn't bad but definitely has more kick. Not nearly as much kick as my old LC9 though.

I'd think that many of the small caliber shooters shot for the head in their given self defense situations, because of their knowledge on how small the caliber is. Good video.

A lot of what people think and believe is based upon hearsay and years of inexperience. In many cases it just comes down to personal opinions, prejudices and what you prefer to believe about something or someone. And this applies to a lot more than just firearms.

  • @tonyv8925
    @tonyv8925 2 роки тому +8

Basically, the .380 (9 x 17mm Kurz) is a close range round, 7 yards or less. I would guess that most self defense cases are measured in feet, not yards. Police and Military forces used this caliber for decades and found it adequate for most uses. In home use, I would be concerned about over penetration using more powerful ammunition. The .380 seems to be just the ticket for close in use. Also, recoil is lighter, and ease of charging your pistol is also easier. Being a senior citizen with arthritis, trying to rack the slide on a 9 x 19mm, or .45 acp is just not possible.

I'd take a 380 for CC. For home defense I don't know but I'm kinda leaning toward a 20 guage or 12 guage semi auto. You bust up in the house I kinda want it to get messy.

Interesting thoughts here. I have carried everything from .22 to .45 and have never felt under gunned. I do currently have a .380 as well and do agree it is easier to carry. Thanks for the video. 😎

I live in Georgia and carry a Ruger LCP max daily and love it..... I've got a Glock .380 and another Ruger Security .380 in the Nightstand...... I love the caliber and shoot it well.... .380 holds it own!

Just ran across this, THANK YOU! for pointing out the extreme upside of 380...I get grief for my Bersa Thunder EDC 8&1...2 things, dependable & accurate & I'm less concerned with thru & thru at close range 15ft causing unwanted collateral damage...I also have 9mm that I carry on occasion, but rely on my 380

I totally agree. I just wish the pricing was similar to 9mm in bulk.

Underwood Xtreme Defender and Xtreme Penetrator are my only carry 380 rounds. The numbers aren't as easily available now that Lehigh took the stats off their website, but they scored larger wound cavities than the 9.

Good video. You are so right. I’ve been in lots of gun stores where I could tell in the first 30 seconds that I knew a lot more about the guns they had than the person behind the counter. You were also right about studying the statistics of real life shootings, vs the shooting range tactical commando boys shooting into ballistic gel. The actual statistics of what happened in real life mean a lot more. I agree that Greg’s study is an excellent resource

I’ve had the exact same experience in gun stores. This why I had to make this video for common sense citizens like you. There’s a lot of bad information like what we’ve heard, and I want to help dispel the myths. Thanks for your support and please like and subscribe!

Great and accurate video and it made me go back and buy back my Glock 42 380 ACP and start using it again as my EDC.
I loved the Glock 43x 9mm, but the weight difference and I shoot the Glock 42 380 much better and it’s all about being accurate and shot placement. Thanks gain for the great video.
