When I bought my first grail I thought I was done. 20 grail knives later, the notion of "one knife" is a distant memory. 😂
Couldn't have said it better bro!
😂 same here I’ve accepted it as well
What if we only bought them when we actually could afford them... Would that be okay?!
Currently thinking i just need a para 2. I dont have enough money to go down that rabbithole.
Different tool for a different job, nothing wrong with that.
An opinel is a great first knife. They even make a kid friendly version with a rounded tip. That’s what I started both my kids on when they were 6.
Opinel is a decent choice. I am partial to Victorinox (First Victorinox model in this case) but Opinel is much more DIY friendly.
With a name like Jean-Sebastien it was pretty obvious your kids would get Opinels. I also like a Mora for kids. Great fixed blade for no money.
@Douglas Carmelo Your scam site has been blocked.
@@twatmunro9563 you are right about morakniv.
Love the timestamps, thanks 👍
The camera dude know when to chime in and steal the show with his cheeky line haha
My problem choosing a knife for life is that every day I arrive to a different conclusion.
You just verbalized my dilemma!
that's a proble when you own more than one knife, just broke that rule when I gifted my old Recon 1, now I'm in a buying spree lol
Yes, drops are more likely and more consequential on boats--so it's a good thing those two both have lanyard holes. I picked up my lanyard habit on the water.
I just got my CKRT Ritual in the mail yesterday - it is so much fun to play with. Makes me want to invest in a pirate costume; AAAAAAARGH!
That nordsmith canteen knife is such a beauty! Well done Mr. Anderson!
Yes! Everyone should always carry a knife! An old Swedish saying " a knifeless man is a lifeless man".. but I think that applies to everyone!
The handle on your Canteen is one of my favorite, that I own. When I first held the knife I thought, WOW huge handle but it didn't take long to realize just how good in use and well thought out the Canteen's handle is. great job by you and LT's crew!
Thank you pinkie! Glad you are digging the knife -DCA
DCA, the Spyderco Snap-It Salt is the answer to the sailing question. Clipped to a life vest it is readily accessible and won't get away.
My first knife was a victornox classic .I remember cutting my self when I was cutting open a lego box because I was using the knife backwards haha
Victorinox Rucksack for me. Thought that the saw get's no use. Ended up being third most used part.
@@martinmurd4495 oh I haven’t heard of that model. I know my most used Sak Is my hunstman for those awesome scissors. It was my great grandpas.
First knife for me was a SAK similar to a classic. Got it when I was about 9 or 10. It just had an additional small red flashlight on it. The emblem was the button. I learnt quickly not to put my fingers in the path of the blade when closing it after getting bitten quite deeply when closing it. Also learnt to make sure which side is the sharp side after getting bit when I accidentally cut with the spine. I'm not a big believer in "youth" model blades with blunt tips. Let kids poke and cut themselves and they'll learn to respect the knife more.
@@Mikey4808 I agree with you on that one .no need for a rounded tip.
I look forward every week to this video! One of the best knife videos on the net!
I'll absolutely back the Nordsmith Canteen knife. I got mine a couple of months ago and it's terrific. I'm hoping to see another steel versions in the future. I'd definitely get another. :-)
Have to say I really like your videos, informative and entertaining. Ty.
The knives David chose at the end are beautiful, I'd definitely go with something like this
I got a "muddy girl camo" color Buck Bantam for each of my two Daughters. They both use and love them.
Thank you David
Had a Bantam before I got into the EDC rotation game. Handy little knife.
I just had a thought on the question for a good first knife for a kid. Traditionally, kids were started off with a slip joint, since they don’t lock abs that makes them less dangerous overall (less lethal anyway). The trouble is that slip joints have a strong back spring that can cause the blade to close forcefully on your fingers either when opening or closing the knife, if your grip slips. A safer alternative would be the new “double detect” knives that have no back spring which causes them to clamp shut if you let go of them. That way a kid can partially close the knife without being at risk of the blade closing on them unexpectedly.
I made a lanyard on the pocket clip..it works while wind surf. I recommend elastic lanyard.
My first knife was a Schrade Old Timer with
the three blades. Drop point, sheep’s foot, and Spey. Great first knife.
Kershaw’s got a few knife and bottle opener combos like the shuffle, cinder, pub, and the one I use the most, the antic. But for outdoor bbqs, I always have TOPs bartender defender knife/bottle opener around my neck.
Another informative, entertaining, and thoughtful video!
i’ve given four boys their first knife and so far the oldest was eight years old and I got him the spyderco manbug with the wharncliffe blade because it fits his hand because it’s absolutely tiny and there’s no pocket clip.
Never thought about that advantage of the wire pocket clip. Very smart.
A cool little knife with a single blade and bottle opener is the Kershaw Cinder. I got my brother one for Christmas I probably will buy a couple more.
Other options for the Persian/upswept blade is many Pinkerton designs. The CJRB 'Arroyo' comes immediately to mind as a budget option.
My first knife was a LL Bean edition Gerber LST that my dad gave me when I was about 6 and I still have it and it's still in good shape except for having a scratched up blade and I'm now 30. It's still a nice 5th pocket knife but I usually carry a sodbuster in the 5th pocket.
Persian style/upswept point? The CJRB Gobi. Great design, Fidget friendly, under 40 bucks. I don't have David's experience. I'm just a nut that buys LOTS of knives 😁
Best knife info on utube as always, Ill stick with my mini presidio cf,i use it every day all day and it hasnt let me down yet so im happy with that😀
Good episode. Some interesting questions with, as always, interesting suggestions.
Great video. Like the Para3 choice.
22:13 That would be Tops Silent Hero for me. I have had mine since 2015 & been very happy with it.
I absolutely love my Ritual it's bad ass
Great video ! Thank you for the content Dave ! I was watching an older video that you were in the Cold Steel SR1 VS S.O.G. Seal XR Flipper.. I feel compelled to thank you , because of that video I'm now the proud owner of a S.O.G. Seal XR Flipper ! Keep up the good work big guy 💯❤🇺🇸💪❗
Right on, glad you found it helpful and thanks for the kind words! -DCA
This is for M Gee, Slip joint: I come from a non lock jurisdiction and have researched this question. The lowly Douk Douk was and still is used all over North Africa and France. French Laguioles can work, on both I would add a thumb stud . I personally prefer a finger choil (added safety) .The best of these for you stated purpose would be Boker Plus xs\xl . Spyderco UK for unobtrusive quick deployment .But.... be careful you will need a lot of practice to make them work without loosing your fingers :)
Recently got burned on the purchase of a surprisingly well made benchmade and ZT clone. So close, I’m not even that mad. Kind of impressed, really. Could you do a video showing how to identify clones on things like benchmade and ZT and others?
I want to make sure the first one I give to my son is special so that way if he keeps it in his collection he has an actual nice knife that he's hanging on to not just for the centimental value
First one is gonna get lost or destroyed (mine did)... I do plan on giving mine CRKs as High School graduation gifts with that "they'll have it forever" sentiment though.
Whats your budget? And any parameters?
@@wake777 oh no I'm not buying one anytime soon my son is 2 just saying when he is old enough but I will probably give him around a $100 knife
@@jaredappleseed7037 oh ok. Well good luck until then
I gave my two boys their first knives here recently. Got them the crkt squid. good starter blade length and not an aggressive point and only around 20$ because I’m sure they’ll loose them eventually.
The CRKT Bev-Edge and kershaw shuffle also have Bottle openers
Hey DCA, I am newer to your channel but I am very fermiliar with your website. I love a sheep's foot knife blade shape! I have a hard time finding a fairly reasonably priced knife with a nice sheep's foot for EDC. I am also a fan of multitools, but that is not necessarily a deal breaker. But my perfect knife would be a sheep's foot blade and pair of scissors in the same tool. Thank you for the videos, I always learn a lot.
I love that Nords kanteen knife
Low-middle price point option on knife-bottle opener combo: Kershaw shuffle.
Cold steel has some pretty non destructive pocket clips too (grik, Kiridashi). I was totally unaware of your custom knife and i love it, reminds me of a big nessmi pro.
2 knives DCA ? One has to be a Swiss army. Oh I see you slipped a multi tool in there. Nice. I like the SAK fieldmaster
Agreed. The Fieldmaster is one of my favorites and a part of my EDC rotation.
For kids its going to depend on your kid but I always recommend a folding locking blade or a fixed blade and never a slip joint or SAK type knife. SAKs are more like a second knife in my opinion once they learn proper blade control with a locking mechanism or fixed blade.
My sons first knife was a Mora Pro C because of the guard, ease of sharpening and so forth.
My everyday knife, right now, is the Byrd Tern. It's pretty much,
a slipjoint Delica.
Love the videos, keep up the great work. I've been wanting to get an EDC pocket fixed blade for a while now, but I'm looking for something that lies flat in my pocket and doesn't take up too much room. Preferably something around the lines of the MKM Mikro, Giantmouse GMF1, or CRKT Scribe
PLEASE do another video on bushcraft knives.
I saw the other video you guys did and it just got me more curious on bushcraft knives
For "one blade and bottle opener" a slightly odd yet cool choice is the Civivi Mandate.
For a 1st knife: SAK Pioneer, Opinel No.6 (rounded tip version?), Kabar Dozier
Victorinox has a 1st knife for kids with a rounded point. It will cut, but not stab. Except for plastic toy knives, that was the first knife for my sons.
Kershaw shuffle is a budget single blade knife opener option.
First thing I thought of. I can see the SAK, but when I was looking for exactly that (pocket knife with bottle opener), the shuffle seemed like the best option
My two would be my Spyderco Para2 with full spydy edge and my Bark River Bravo1 in 3v.
For the knife thing about dropping it overboard you can carry the knife with basically a bobber on the lanyard loop if you are worried about dropping it overboard. They make those ones for your keys with that cheap metal chain i would replace the chain of course but that's always an option you can just have a net to grab it in that case.
That CRKT Ritual is wicked.
I have a red Bantam that is over 50 years old.
The bottle opener/screw driver has sharp perfect edges. The new ones are rounded and kind of polished, and don‘t work very well...
Hey there David. I was wondering what your thoughts on the"scariest" knife you've seen or held.
A scary knife is any knife held by someone wanting to do you harm. In my opinion
@@dehydratedculture9126 i think its more the person thats scary than the knife tho right?
I'm not sure, I don't think any horror movie would have the same effect if the murder weapon was a butter knife.
So cool!!
With regards to your sailing recommendation, you're on the right track with size recommendation and the blunt tip. There are two considerations that you didn't mention; sailing knives are paired with a marlin spike. Fixed blades have a marlin spike as a separate item, folders have the marlin spike built in. The second thing you need to consider is the lines you are cutting. High tech dyneema lines need don't cut the same as polyester lines... choosing serrated to rip through a line or flat blade can make a big difference in an emergency situation vs a rerigging situation. You'll see what I mean if you try to cut through some high tech line in a hurry.
P.s. other features you want in a sailing knife are a shackle key. Also a lanyard loop.
I've never seen a dedicated split ring function on a sailing knife, but I'd kill for that on a sailing knife too. ⛵️
Any chance you guys will bring back any outdoorsy camping/bushcraft videos in the near future. I have always enjoyed the practical applications & tend to learn something new, or at least get some new ideas from those. Thanks !
My first real knife was a Victorinox Grand Prix. If only I still had it and hadn't mistreated it! But at least it got me started in the knife hobby, and I have no old slip-joint injuries to speak of.
My cousin has had an Endura 4 for about ten years that he's never sharpened once. Used to use it to pry and for construction.. lost the tip. Still works and if he sharpened it would be fine. Spyderco is legit for longevity.. just make sure you get a stainless steel if you don't get what a carbon steel is.
Giant mouse also make some good knives with wire clips and high end materials.
Best tactical slipjoint would be the Sandrin Lanzo. My one and done would be a Cruwear Delica but to be fair I've never owned a Para 3. I'm waiting for a sprint lightweight in a better steel.
I would have added the Kershaw Shuffle on that list too. They're decent knives that won't break the bank.
The Para 3 is a good choice David.
Another upswept blade to look at is the new CJRB Gobi with their new anti corrosion steel.
To address Mr Turner's question - he might want to look at the Cold Steel Double Safe Hunter with a rounded plastic clip. I purchased one of these for a friend who had the same steering wheel scratching issue. He loves it.
Hey! My question was answered!
To the guy looking for a blade and bottle opener, if you want something a little cooler than the SAK without spending much more, check out the CRKT Bev-Edge.
Folder of Osborne, fixed buck micarta caper
Current Grail knife would be s110v spyderco manix 2 XL. Doesn't exist yet.
Kershaw Shuffle and Shuffle II for single blade and bottle opener
I just ordered a spyderco Byrd robin 2 black plastic handle
Another good Persian style blade is the Kizer Nomad.
You really do a fantastic job at introducing, describing knives and making them relatable 👍🏻
My A1x if I'm outdoors. My recon one for work and or work purposes. My recon one mini for casual EDC. But if I had to keep and use only one knife all the time for any and everything? Definitely my AD10
I'd love to see a watch and knife pairing. Take the Hamilton Khaki King or Khaki Field watch for example, which knife do you think pairs well with that watch?
My dawson chief is my one fixed blade, but only because buck doesn't make the 124 in magnacut! My one folder would probably be a cold steel like the sr1 lite, code 4, or 4max scout. Although the ad20 with shark lock looks nice, but I don't have one...
Hi DCA. I'm a big fan of the Knifecenter FAQ.
I'm a rock climber. I need a knife able to cut through nylon and spectra/ dyneema slings, from 8 to 20 mm in width and also dynamic rope ranging from 9 to 10.5 mm. It doesn't necessary need to be a folder, but have to be small enough to carry in a climbing harness. It also need to have a hole big enough to pass a carabiner through or have a built-in carabiner.
Thank you, Sir.
Ka bar for my fixed blade then probably pm3 for folder
My first knives: I got my grandfathers old slip joints - very old 30s-60s - when he died and my father bought me a Buck 055... I think. No longer have it. I think I need to replace it.
22:12 I needs that 🔥 🔥
Out of my knives & whatnot if I had to grab one it would be my Leatherman sidekick every time & a pocket folder as a secondary 🤷🏼♂️ & those are always changing since everyday is the same but different
Sebenza 31 for me
April 1st is coming up, suggest you do something with that. Or Easter on the 4th .... resurrected knives maybe?
Hi DCA - love the videos! Just put in an order. Could you talk about some vocation specific knives most people don’t know about? Until I watched your videos I didn’t know there were first responder knives, spyderco’s Salt series (boating/diving/fishing?) and in a past video you talked about flipper handle specific for gloved/greasy environments (oil rigs?) - thanks!
Honey Badger knives are a good start.
Thanks for a fun chat, as always, Mr. Andersen. I literally laughed out loud at your inclusion of your S-18, because the entire time you were carrying on about the Para 3, I was wondering why THAT instead of the S-18.
There was a method to my madness lol :D -DCA
@@knifecenter indeed! 😂
An outstanding FAQ episode DCA. A couple of observations with the boat knives choices. As was pointed out by others, using the lanyard hole underway is the best way to keep a dropped knife from going over the side. Originally intended for use back in the days of sail, a lanyard ring, bail, or hole on a knife was used to secure ones knife, out to an arms length, to ones person. That would prevent dropping your knife over the side or worse dropping ones knife from a yardarm, 30 feet or so onto a crowded deck. Both of which were frowned upon. Secondly, nothing dulls a knife edge faster underway than having to cut synthetic lines, especially nylon. Which brings me to my question, I normally sharpen serrated edged blades on a table or bench sharpener using triangle type ceramic rods. Can you recommend a pocket ceramic slip or pocket ceramic triangle for field sharpening? Keep up the great work. BTW, I just stropped my Canteen for the 1st time, I didn't think it was possible to be even more impressed with this knife, but there it is... Now that's a knife edge!
Thanks for the feedback and glad to hear you are enjoying your Canteen Knife! As for serrated sharpening on the go, the Lansky Dog Bone sharpeners are a good choice: kcoti.com/3lX5QBQ

Hi David, I a big fan of your videos! I look forward to watching every week. My favourite knife is the Giantmouse Ace Biblio. I love the blade geometry, materials and ergos. I have been looking for something a little bigger for certain tasks. How would you compare the Para 3 to the Biblio? Would you say it’s a good choice when moving up in size? If not do you have any other suggestions? Cheers 👍
Love the videos David! Thank you! I am on the market for a Kukri...i have been looking at CondorKT. My budget is around 150$. I am open to suggestions/other companies. If you could compare the spine thickness of them that would be great. Thank you in advance.
Hey David love the channel I’m looking for a folding fillet knife do you have any good ideas keep up the great work👍👍👍
Mini kephart knife fixed blade options for edc.
I wish that crkt ritual had a deadbolt lock! Would be 🔥
David, could you recommend a good, small, unobtrusive tactical flashlight for pocket carry? Enjoy your videos. Please bring back the Pilgrim LT in AEB-L.
My knife for life would have to be the Tops model Cat. Not a hand hugger but fits great for a man with regular sized hands. As far as a folding knife would have to be the Benchmade Freek
That Buck Bantam just may be the best $25 knife on the planet.
I've never seen you review the Alvely knife.have you ever heard of that brand. I own 3. Besides a little uncomfortable handle, it's the sharpest knife out of the box I've ever owned.
Folder- Cold Steel Recon 1
