    I'm being haunted by that same "worst" knife. I bought a 1986 s10 pickup when I was 16. Found that very knife in the glove box. It closed on my finger one day and I threw it in a ditch. A couple years later, I found it in a filing cabinet at work. I quickly gifted it to someone. They quit the job and a month later, i turned on the lights in the shop at work
    and that stinking thing was resting on the middle of my desk. It still sits there today, so I can keep an eye on the spooky thing!

    Hi David. Thanks for my continuing knife education. Every six months I have a CT scan to check for cancer recurrence and as a way to get through the stress, I allow myself to buy a new knife. I'm thinking of getting my first fixed blade: something for my significantly smaller than average hands, under $100, nice sheath, good for food prep, and/or playing with wood (e.g. feather sticking). I'm also looking for a good fidget knife: 3 inches or less, drop shut action, more than one way to open that includes flipper, willing to spend up to $180. Thanks.

    My worst was a "cub scout knife" with a couple blades and a can opener and a bottle opener, it had hollow black plastic scales that were meant to look like dyed antler, with a little tin shield on each one. Dull as dishwater. Put me off multi-bladed pocketknives for the rest of my life, the only ones I have are ones I've found or been given. I do have a couple Leatherman tools, but I consider them to be tools of a different sort and practically NEVER use their blades.

      An Esee was my first and only fixed blade I own so far. I’d like to get a few more though that are a bit smaller so I love seeing all my options. That cold steel looks pretty rad

    Great video, you reminded me to get a field sharpener for when I'm allowed out again! Sheffield based "wood tools" are great family company, crook knives and axes are their thing. Still ground on a big stone by a man who's been grinding since he was popped out.

    When you're looking for a cleaver, you can't go wrong with a Henckels Zwilling. Works great on cracking ribbs also.

    If you aren't getting hair popping sharpness, you probably aren't stropping, or aren't stropping correctly. Also, get a cheap jeweler's loupe off Amazon. Use it to analyze your edge as you sharpen.

      Yeah 10x loupe helped take my blade sharpening technique to the next level. S90V is still a pain in the ass but manageable.

    Simple tip lay your blade flat on the stone the space between the blade,raise until space disappears.Bam there is your angle.Easy way also use your sharpie so you know your keeping your angle..Just helping ya DCA excellent stuff brother keep it up...

    DCA- I’m looking for a fixed blade to dedicate to breaking down boxes at home. Something in the $50- $100 dollar range would be ideal. Love the videos

    Ha, I got a knife for selling stuff from a fundraiser when I was a Cub Scout as well. But, mine was an actual Swiss Army with the Cub Scout emblem on it as well. I still have it 30 years later.

    Hi David hope you are well as well as everyone watching. For the person looking for a decent survival knife and not too expensive you may want to try a Shrade which am surprised David did not mention, Tops knives are pretty solid and the Esse knives have a big variety.

    Sheffield Steel is -or rather was since it is closed now, the name of the steel mill just like Uddeholm, Carpenter Technology Corporation, DanSpray, and Sandvik. And like Sandvik is a huge manufacturer of saw blades, besides alloys and refined steel, so was Sheffield (although perhaps mostly known for tableware cutlery). I am not sure about this, but I believe that some production runs of the Faibairn-Sykes fighting knife was made at Sheffield Steel mill facilities.

    Love the trip down memory lane with the Chinese scout knife. I had a similar one as well. It got me thinking, though, what is your most treasured knife, nostalgically speaking? For me it is an old Boker Jack knife that belonged to my grandfather. About 3 1/2 inches long, one half of the well worn bone scale on one side is missing. The tip of the pen blade must have broken at some point and was reshaped and resembles a sheepsfoot blade now and the main clip point blade has a slightly rounded tip now and was at some point sharpened with a coarse file, leaving deep marks in it. Both blades have a nice patina and despite their looks they still take a wicked sharp edge. I carry the knife now and then but it spends most of its time in an ammo crate with the other knives I've collected over the years.

      How serious are you about knives? Even if you only have a slight interest, just keep in mind, the best knife is the knife you will actually use. Don’t get it if you won’t feel comfortable using it. Great knife though so you can’t go wrong if you do

      My wife is allowed to buy as much shoes as I am allowed to buy knifes.
      She constantly complains about her beeing limited too much.
      To be honest, its her own fault. She does not get the differences between the knifes, especially the steel variants.
      Or am I supposed to run to her, waving a blade, shouting "I've got a new one, go to the shoe shop, quick.... "?

    Great video, David, love watching these FAQs. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of slip joint knives? I like the design of a lot of modern traditionals, but in practice I don't see why I wouldn't be better served with a locking folder or fixed blade for edc. Thanks!

    Sheffield used to put its name on some good blades way back when. Got an old 120+ yr old hunting knife from my great grandfather. I believe Sheffield’s name came up when I was researching it. Now days I don’t know if Sheffield is much different from some Frost knives I’ve seen.

      Sheffield knives are a strange one. They're usually pretty rugged and will last a lifetime but not all brands will turn up sharp so if you can't sharpen a knife stick to Frost cutlery. I have a Taylor's Eye Witness from the 1930s and the exact same knife made about a year ago and the difference between the two are minimal. I had a Sheffield hunting knife as a kid that was about 5th hand, made way back when, made with beautiful carbon steel and I've looked at some of the modern ones on the website and some have a look of Frost cutlery about them so I do know what you're saying but I have a Sheffield Green River knife that has the beautiful carbon steel, so I guess you just have to choose your knife and maker well.

    My first large Grail purchase...an Emerson CKC-6 , at the time that was such a huge investment for me , mooch GF and her BFF who stayed a weekend and suddenly the "den" turned in to her bedroom..shocker a giant mooch too.
    ..I was one of the "35-45" customers Mr Emerson speaks of, everything was off!
    The dangerously early lockup, rough edges that didn't meet anywhere they met up flush.
    Felt like sand was in it , I could go on....well I had to talk the mooch into letting me buy it....there she is looking at Timberline or Maxam nagging... returned it .
    3 months later I moved out one day they were out spending money I gave them to be out and I moved into boarding house.
    I would rather bring a Gerber Paraframe or a Zombie Killer , and I am soon cheap with knives.

      The french trade knife is a good place to start, it's a fantastic do it all shape. Self defense, wood carving/whittling, food prep, game processing, filleting fish, bushcraft type tasks the list goes on. They were worn on belts and carried all day, they were ubiquitous in early American history and yet they don't seem to be very popular in the mainstream today

    I have that piece of crap imitation swiss knife too. Blades are dull and the corkscrew is bent like crazy! I think it's in the bottom of a toolbox somewhere! :D

    hey David, loving this show sofar, congrats on hitting 25 epp's. I was wondering if you could recommend a knife i could use in an office setting that both hides away easily but is easy to access, has a fixed handle and could be scoutcarry. i was thinking something like the Gerber Ghoststrike or possibly a push dagger but would like something with maybe a more full or longer handle. medium/large sized gloves. thanks and here's to 25 more

    Hey, fellow big hander! I'm at a loss looking for a quality knife (think Benchmade Osborne, etc.) that is both short in blade but beefy in grip. I had to replace the scales on my griptilian to make it fit me, but i wish it had a shorter blade. I love my barrage but it's too dang long for some things. A couple rules: no autos and id prefer a lockbar and decent choil/hand guard so my hand doesn't slide onto the blade when pushing the tip in hard use and so I can reverse grips easily.

    Hey David. I have a Victorinox Pioneer X. I love its tool selection and sturdy alox scales. But I find it slightly heavy in the pocket. I wish they sold it with a small, silver, deep-carry, tip-up pocket clip on the back side - and that’s my question - do you think such a clip could be attached without ruining the knife? Keeping in mind that there is a pin right where you’d want to attach the clip. And if so, where to source the clip? And any tips on attaching it would be appreciated. Or do you have thoughts on any other solutions? Thanks for all your brilliant videos.

    Question: I own and replace my Spyderco Pacific Salt every time I misplace one. Questions... What sharpening tips can you offer for the H1 steel? It feels like it might be a more difficult steel to sharpen. Can you comment on the difference between the Pacific Salt and the Pacific Salt 2 please? I have both. The clip on the Pacific Salt is easier to service if I happen to yank the clip wrong and open it. I have had a hard time on a previous Spyderco with the 3 tiny torx screws holding the clip on. That's why I went to the Pacific Salt with it's nice large single screw. I bought another recently not realizing it was the Pacific Salt 2. I kept it and the clip has been fine so far. Have you had good luck with clips being attached this way? Thx for your channel.

    Hi DCA, love the FAQ series. I have a question for you. I recently bought my first pocket knife, a Civivi Pintail in micarta. I was disappointed to discover that the micarta felt rather slippery and had minimal "texture" to it. The size of the knife also felt a little small in my hand. So can you make a folder recommendation with the following requirements: blade length 3.25 - 4 inches, overall length 7.25 - 8 inches, textured micarta or G-10, a true deep carry pocket clip (many manufacturers claim to be but parts of the knife still shows). I don't have a strong preference for the type of steel...in fact, probably the cheaper the better...something like VG10 or S30VN is more than fine. The Boker Plus Brad Zinker Urban Trapper Gentleman's Flipper 3.75" checks all the boxes but I'm looking for something a little more robust. If the Hogue Deka had a true deep carry pocket clip, it would be perfect. Please help.

    Oh, the swiss army knife knock off, I got one from my dad when I was a kid. Quality is obviously nowhere to be found but it brings memories and not all the knives can do this.

    I love that little Neonecker...but I feel like Condor is overvaluing their upgraded 1095 pieces. For the almost the same money (if not the same), you can get the fit and finish, style, and durability of a TOPS edc fixed blade. At 55, it would be a no brainer.

    Hi David, I love the Bestech Texel blade shape. What knife would you recommend with that same blade shape but with an upgrade on the steel? I don't mind G-10 or carbon fiber handle material but I also love micarta. Keep up the great job.

    ok peeple. an idea besides the normal knife vs car perspective. lets do knifes vs mechanical watches. an arty thing one might say today. i ll give you 3 to match with a knife. 1: The digital classic GShock GA-100 Series 2: The sporty one Ball Chrono Stormchaser for the tritium 3: The dressy one: Bulgari Octo Finissimo Black and Red.

    The worst knife I have ever personally owned: the Gerber Ripstop (1 or 2, both suck) for so very many reasons. At sub-$20, or even free, I still couldn't recommend one. Thanks for checking in and have a great weekend, DCA and the KC crew!

    I LOVED the info on how to sharpen a knife. VERY informative. Also., I bought one of the OTF smith and wesson auto knives, and i love it. The only thing i did not care for is having to cock it back myself. Besides that, it's GREAT. Do YOU have a favorite OTF knife? I am old school, and loved the old stiletto knives, but i wanted to try out one of the OTF. Do you offer one that has a return spring, and with the same quality as the smith and wesson?

    Hi David, I’m looking to expand and upgrade my knife collection. Like you, I have slightly larger than average hands so grip length is important as I’d like a full 4 finger grip. I’d like something medium to large size, maybe not “premium” or “exotic” but good high quality steel, and handle I’m think layered G-10 or carbon fiber (shredded or marbled a plus). Finger choil also gets a plus. Budget is $300ish, under $250 is best. Any suggestions?

    I am thinking about upgrading my Spyderco Sharpmaker with the diamond or CBN rods.
    Can you please explain the difference of the two and what is preferable for sharpening the moderns steels.

      Simplified, the CBN is coarser than the medium rods. The diamond rods are even coarser. Gives a good range of options. If you don't need to reprofile the edge of your modern steel knives you may not need either, but I'd say start with the CBN. -DCA

    I share Thomas’s philosophy on the sunglasses. The cheap ones always show up. But almost all my oakleys and ray bans have either been lost, scratched badly or run over. But the cheap sunglasses always seem to find their way back into my hands. Cant figure out why this is.

    QUESTION: I see many modern knives has coated blades. I've never had such knife, and they certainly look pretty cool, but I'm worried if that coating will scrape off with time, so it will leave ugly marks on the blade. And most importantly, I don't know if coating can possibly be toxic if such blade is used for food prep. Any advice about using knives with coated blades and if there are different types of coating, which one is the best?

    Sheffield is known as "steel city " over here in the UK , steel making and metallurgy built its economy. Sad demise of its little Mester's and so much lost knowledge, So many great brand's using what at the time was the steel to use , Butlers , Frank Cobb and Co, Stacey Bros, Thomas Turner & Co , W.M Needham the list could go on and on. But rightly said "sheffield steel " is now just a stamp , bad times .

    Hello Mr Anderson (you see what I did there?). I posed a question on a previous episode that I was looking for a folder that is salt water resistant that I can use for preparing bait, for surf fishing, and is not a spyder co. Now to the my new question: Russel from CJRB made a bold statement with their new AR-RPM9 steel that its VERY corrosion resistant. Would their GOBI J1906 suit my needs? The blade shape looks suited for filleting? I especially see on artisans website that the new one also boasts a slightly longer blade at 3.5”.

    I have a question. I am looking for a Chavez Redencion alternative. I like to combination of bearings and thumb studs but I don't love all of the redencion's design aesthetics. I have a kizer T1 and love the action but it is a bit to small for my taste. Are there any good knives with the bearing, thumb stud combo with at least a 3 1/2 inch blade? Price is not my main concern but I don't like to edc knives too far above $350. Thank you for the consideration

    i transitioned from a nakiri - without knowing its name or origin - to a more substantial cleaver for everyday kitchen stuff. like both though, quite more than a traditional chef knife. have funsies.

    I have that same worst knife as DCA. It was a gift so I kept it for 40 years, but I had finally had enough of seeing that POS in my drawer so I put it in the trash. I would have given it to someone for free if it wasn't just so bad. You know its bad when the land fill is the only place for it.

    Just seeing if anyone knows anything. I picked up a clip point fixed blade knife stamped ERN Solingen Germany on one side of the blade and a saber and crown on the other side. It has an eagle clutching a serpent in its talons on on side of the handle, which is plastic. I was just was wondering when it was made and if it’s worth anything. I didn’t pay much.

      If you are looking for a manual non assisted/non auto, the best button lock knife would be the protech Malibu. If autos are what you are looking for, protech practically specializes in button locks lol

    I have two questions. A lot of bushcraft videos talk about old pioneers using their basic kitchen knives in the wilderness. 1) I decided to try the Old Hickory 7 inch butcher knife, do you have any sheath suggestions? 2) if making one is the best solution what tools should one get to dabble in leather sheath making?

    On a future video could you please spend a couple of minutes and go over the different Sebenza models? I think there was a 21, then 25, and now a 31? I know about the Insingo blades, but am confusing myself on the different Reeve Sebenza models, thanks!
