In Knife Centers defense, they’ve done many videos on best budget knives $50 and less. $50 and less is my lane. Lol. I stay in that lane and am very happy with the knives I’ve collected. At the end of the day a knife is just a tool.
@Jesse Robinson I don't think I agree with that. Buying a more expensive knife doesn't mean you aren't planning on using it, and I certainly don't think that people who get them don't use them. There are some great knives for 50 bucks though!

Bro back in the day this would have cost you $100+ from benchmade or something. The knife is a steal! The value there is ridiculous, that's a knife that will last a life time for 20 bucks, and is available because of higher standards and better tech largely from the innovations brought about by collectors and nerds. @@Ajaxykins The p801 is one of those budget knives that definitely works higher than its pay grade. Every time I'm going through my collection and come to the p801, it always impresses me. It's solidly put together, has what I consider to be the best budget steel, very good action, and it looks good too!

I wanna be clear as someone who makes a lot of jokes about not being able to afford premium knives on this and other channels: most of us are not like that guy. I love my crkt/ruger LCK and the fact that olamic cutlery exists does not cancel out the fact that budget lines are alive and well and living in Walmart jeans like mine everywhere.
For the tight budget guy, get a box cutter. Save up for the Spyderco Shaman, you will be glad you did. If you end up with with 6 knives under $300 except you will be enjoy giving them away.
I have loved knives since I was a little boy, I'm now 50 and still get mesmerized by shiny blades, I'm an engineering and materials junkie to boot (Hey, the first step is admitting it :) ) This is by far the best blade channel on UA-cam, always entertaining, informative and down to earth, DCA, you are a real pleasure to watch, I sincerely hope KC appreciate you for what you are worth.
There will always be great knives for all "classes." It's too valuable of a tool. You just have to know what you're looking for and how to maintain them.
This is just it. A lot of times a simple short fixed blade knife will do everything one needs and last a lifetime. One needs to learn how to sharpen the knife and keep it sharp, even if just cutting up boxes and such. It doesn't take long once you start doing it regularly. I've been doing/reading up on wood carving and it shocking what the old Sweds can do with a utilitarian belt knife they use for everything day to day. This can also apply to a good, solid, folder you buy once and just keep in shape.
I don't know about "yuppie knives", but I do shipping/receiving/materials handling in an aerospace machine shop and I see what goes into milling a piece of aluminum. It ain't cheap. Even so, I save up and do use anything from a $30 to $200 knife on the regular. At work, camping, and hiking. I think it just depends on what you like and how you want to allocate your funds. No knock on anyone. There is something out there for everyone.
So glad you gave Voxnaes some love here! I've been a fan of his designs longer than I've known who he is, and I've only become more and more obsessed since I started seriously collecting. I almost always have one of his knives on me because they're so elegant and versatile.
The advances and developments that happen in the high-end knife industry quickly become assimilated by lower-end knife companies, so it really does benefit everyone. Nowadays you can get many great budget knives for even the $20 price point. The other week I even got a super sharp 8Cr13Mov knife with ball bearing pivot and perfect action for $10 on sale. Hard to beat that! I believe trickle-down theory may actually be working, in this ONE instance! ;) Deals are definitely out there, you just have to look for em. The most expensive knife I currently own is the completely amazing, wicked, and unnecessary (for me) Cold Steel Vaquero XL. It was my first "grail" knife. Saved up a little and got it for $55 around Thanksgiving. Huge knife, excellent value. I haven't broken the $100 barrier yet. Been eyeing some Spydercos and some Kizers at the moment, but my inner cheapo starts screaming! Ahhhhh LOL 🤣😅

I think that things were never as good for the 'ordinary' knife collector like myself (generally sub $150), of course prices increase over time for everything, but you can build up a useful collection at about any budget, theres so many great options. Thanks David.
I would love to see the different properties of damascus from brand to brand. Very confusing when buying a new knife and all it states on the blade steel is "Damascus". A further breakdown of what steel/steels are in each blade would be great! Yes i know some don't always use the same properties every time, but an overall better understanding would be great!!! thanks!!! Even today, no one knows exactly how they made the original Damascus steel. What they are making today is simply "pattern forged" steel, but they call it Damascus because it sounds cool. Look up the Ulfbehrt swords from ~9th to 11th centuries. Somehow, Mr Ulfbehrt was producing crucible steel a thousand years before it became mainstream.
After spending so much money on expensive knives, I am now looking at quality affordable knives under $100.00 , Some knife makers like Maserin, Cudeman , Otter Messer , Victorinox , and many others offer many choices of nice knives at reasonable prices . I just cannot justify paying $150 and up on knives anymore.

I’m also big on EESE, I love all their stuff but, mainly their knives!
A sharp shovel is a heck of a tool / weapon. All my shovels get an edge and a light coating of paraffin wax melted on and wiped around...makes them easy to clean and keeps the rust off.
I'm a disabled detective. And I'm an artist. I love seeing the budget knives within my reach, the higher end knives up to $200-$250 that I might invest in once I get a handle on my budget knives, AND I absolutely love to see the $1000 + gorgeous works of craftsmanship 🔪🗡️ that cost more than Thomas' truck, or any truck/van I might buy. 🤣🤣 Thank you DCA & Thomas for showing us all these beautiful blades. I can't afford the beautiful $1000+ knifes but I sure love seeing them. They're works of art. I can't afford a Van Gogh, Money, Basquiat or Andy Warhol. I'm still going to enjoy looking at the works.

That’s another reason I’m sticking with Victorinox; for the design and quality you get so much value for your money. For a fixed blade you can get a good Morakniv for $20.
Have knives become too expensive. In some cases yes. In others price for material has gone down. It really depends on the company. DAC thanks for nailing that question. I would have killed to have this level of quality back in the early late 90's early 2000's.
I am newly poor and have been selling some of my “Good” knives. Honestly it has never been easier to find decent knives on a budget. As much as it pains me to say it, some of the knives from China are pretty good. Anybody with a job can afford a Buck, Case, or Gerber knife.
There are some knives that I would consider as being too expensive, but that's really just a matter of perspective, based upon what I personally can afford. That said, as an overall product, the majority of commercially manufactured modern knives are an extremely good value. From the vast assortment of high quality steels available, to the precision machining processes, along with the wide variety of handle and scale materials, you can get quite a lot for your money these days, especially in the $50 to $150 price range. A few decades ago, in order to have gotten anywhere near what you can buy for similar money in today's market, you'd have had to spend many more inflation adjusted dollars on a hand made knife done by a true artisan / craftsman.
Not sure what the future will bring, but I've always thought that Cold Steel are some of the best value knives out there. Really get alot for your money which is always a good feeling.

Knife center is the best priced place to buy knives that ships internationally. BHQ doesn’t even bother to ship to South africa. Thats why Im a Knife center guy, that and DCA is good at answering our questions.
For the water/kayaking trips I personally have the salt version of the Spyderco Enuff. It's a great little fix blade. The serrations are great for rescue purposes but not great for spreading your peanut butter. That's why I have a Cadet in my mess kit FYI I have 17 yrs of paddling and 7 yrs of being an instructor and 2 yrs of being on a national level team.
For me personally,I think the PM2/PM3 is the best designed folding knife on the market..it feels incredible holding it behind the choil and feels just as great when you choke up on the blade using the choil and thumb ramp.the compression lock is my favorite locking mechanism.I think the Benchmade Axis lock is equally cool but I trust the durability of the compression lock more.Ive never had any problems out of the compression lock but I’ve had the Axis lock spring break on a couple of Benchmades.last but certainly not least,I love that iconic wide leaf shaped blade with the full flat grind that Spyderco is known for.it makes for one hell of a slicer..in all honesty,I don’t think I will ever find find a better designed knife in my life.of course that’s not to say there aren’t many other excellent designs out there and there is obviously plenty of nicer higher end knives out there but for an actual user folding knife,the PM2/PM3 reign supreme
I had never heard of Civivi knives until this video. I took a look and they look stunning. I love their clean lines and plain looks. I'll have to get one... Or two 😎
My current EDC at work is a Civivi mini-Mastadon. It's a fantastic box cutter. Fit and finish are top notch, the action is excellent, and the blade is thin enough to be a wonderful slicer, thanks to its full flat grind. When I'm not working, I'm usually carrying either an Eskabar with TKC scales in a Armatus sheath, a TOPS Baja 3.0, or a Bradford Guardian 3. When I go to the lake, I carry my Spyderco Aqua Salt. I forget what they used to call it before they discontinued it, but so many operators carried the original and wrote to complain when Spyderco discontinued it, that they put it back into production using their H1 "steel." (Is it actually steel if it doesn't contain any carbon? 🤔)
@@lvbuckeye my edc rotation is a crkt ignitor, ripple, and honey badger (small). Since now where I work is on a strict security/clearance location they have rules on what you can have. My honey badger or SAK is all I ever bring. I've found that for edc, 2-3 inches is perfectly fine. Cutting packages and zip ties are the most common use. But even if you had to cut up some snack foods it would be fine. So now I've shifted my mentality and for an urban edc I don't see a reason for more than 3 inches. I always thought that nutnfancy was wrong for saying that the sog flash I with a 2.5 inch blade was his go-to edc, but now that I have more experience, I couldn't agree more. Plus, I don't want to carry a 4.5 inch handle in my pocket when I can get by with a 3-3.5 inch handle. Experience>preconceived notions.
I think it's an overlooked modern luxury that knives, and yes even the $500 ones, are as inexpensive as they are. I am by no means wealthy, I make around 60K a year, but I can work one week and have enough money to purchase the most versatile multi-tool in existence that has quality to last my entire lifetime . An easy comparison to make is the cost of a sword in Europe during the age of chivalry or the cost of a katana in ancient Japan. That being said I want more and I wish they weren't so expensive
You can buy a seiko watch, a precision instrument for 200$ intricate gears in precise alignment. Or you get a piece of sharp steel with a "plastic" handle for 300 or more you decide on value
There is room for those "grail knives"... The ones handcrafted with the best materials and techniques. The market is flooded with steel snobbery for the most part. Materials cost dictate the market values. Everything makes sense. But you will find on the lower cost spectrum a rollercoaster of prices not justified by style of manufacture or materials used. I always say, buyer beware. Do you research before pay a lot for a little.
Knife market pricing is just a microcosm of the larger market - think cars/shoes/purses/houses/stocks...it's up to the buyers to find the matching value.

Food Safe Mineral Oil ! Used it for nearly 50 years on knives and other tools with perfect success. I live in a humid enviroment, but I will clean off my knives when they get dirty or wet (incl. stainless)

The Civivi Elementum is a fantastic knife at a fantastic price. Have knives gotten too expensive? I guess the answer to that depends on what you think you need out of a knife. As I often say, my pick for the “best survival knife” is a 2” Victorinox Rambler, that sells for less than $30. That’s the knife I use for more utility tasks like opening boxes than any other, especially since in the modern era, people tend to get a little taken aback when I pull out a pocket knife with a 3.5-4” blade. The Elementum won’t embarrass you anywhere. It’s well-made, attractive, good steel. The days of getting high end US made knives for $50-$150 are long gone, and the quality control of Chinese factories is getting better every year.
As an old carpenter I have no space for a tool that is not totally utility. I appreciate a decent steel and a knife that feels good in my worker hands, but I’d never pay more than $120 for any knife unless it was Excalibur. I have found many folders for under $70 that work great, but I’m not a fancy man.
I’ve been on a hiatus from pocket knives for over a year now. The issue of price not matching the proportional cost of production is the main reason I left. The question on excessive cost is not about the high end knives; it applies just the same to Spyderco, Benchmade, and others. It seems that these makers see the prices that custom makers can command and think they are justified in approaching those prices. Here is my approximation of the mass production materials cost for a typical Spyderco (also my favorite): $3 G10, $2.50 liners, $2.50 hardware, $7 blade, $1.50 clip. Labor, shipping, etc. cost is probably around $15 or less. The only reason they get away with charging $140 for that knife is the hype.
My three would be my Para 2 for everyday and game processing, which is what I use it for already. My ESSE 6 for camp knife and crashing through things as needed. And my Brant and Cochran ME made Allagash Cruiser Axe because an axe is how you make camp and live well in the woods.

I don't see how people complain about knife prices, if anything budget knives is where the true value is anymore. With s35vn and m390 being sold under $100 in knives with good designs, and high quality. With brands pushing value like civivi, cjrb and my favorite cold steel, you can get something really nice for about $50
$50 is a lot of money for lots of people. I admit I buy knives I can’t afford though. My most expensive is the Shaman. Love it. My biggest is Cold Sreel Large Luzan.

They are all from Tops, 1095, tactical / combat, fixed blade, about the same size, around the same price, and lucky for me available on your site. These knives (in no certain order) are the Black Heat, the VTAC Norseman, and the Apache Dawn. Can you give me the down and dirty of these blades? What do you think of them? How are their sheaths? How do they perform? How do they feel in the hand with and without a glove? A special thank you to you, sir, and all the great people at the Knife Center. I think spyderco reasonably prices their knives because of good quality control and for a well known and trusted brand. However one knife that I believe is a bit overpriced is the dragonfly ($70) which IMO is a bit too much for the size and blade material. Just dropping it $10 would be a more reasonable price IMO.
I have been on a CIVIVI kick lately even got the wife involved with a Chronic. Great knives great actions and at around 50 bucks a pop not hard on the wallet. CRKT has some awesome budget stuff as well it is out there if you look.
Cold steel is one of the companies that make great budget knives as well as higher end knives. Its scary if Americans complain about knives becoming too expensive. As a South African a $70 knife is a R1000 knife to us. That money can buy alot of groceries. The big problem is that non American blade-smiths and knife companies are asking American prices but they could actually ask less, such a company is Halfbreed knives who are way over priced for what you get. A better bang for your buck is Work Tuff Gear knives.
On pivot lube: Mineral oil is great but SuperLube makes food safe oils (NSF certified) that are nearly as cheap and can be had in lower viscosities as well. It is my pick, even over Nano Oil, Knife Pivot Lube etc.
Zombie 3- cold steel Frenzy (light folding brain poker) Gerber DownRange Tomahawk & a Bayonet under your gun. (FYI- K-bar makes a bayonet for a pistol, so there is no excuse for not having a bayonet! ) Multi tool doesn’t count as a knife but it is needed too!
I've got a question Mr. Andersen. Actually a couple questions about knife classifications. What differentiates a wharncliffe type blade from a sheepsfoot? Blade shape classifications seem to be all over the place and I'm not sure why. I see what I have always understood to be a wharncliffe called a sheepsfoot and vice versa all the time. Second question, what makes a knife "tactical"? In the knife world these types of things aren't always clearly defined. I know things can't always be clearly defined in every situation but I would appreciate your view as I truly value your opinion on all things knife related.
Food safe: I use Vaseline Petroleum Jelly. Inexpensive, effective, not food-safe as such, but does not kill you if you by accident forgot to wipe our blade before food prep (it is laxative, but never experienced that with the small amount that might be left on a blade used for food prep)
Just like any products, sometimes you pay more for branding. You want a Bugout mini? You're going to get a $75 knife with a $50 dollar butterfly etched into the blade. People are willing to pay for it because there's a certain prestige that comes with owning a Benchmade vs a less expensive Chinese brand of the same materials and quality. You also may or may not get the same level of warranty if you need to repair or replace it. But I'm also old enough to remember when steels such as VG-10 or 154cm were considered premium and only found in high end blades. Nowadays you can get them on $30-50 knives. So some knives are getting overpriced IMO, but in alot of ways for someone looking for budget knives, there's a lot higher quality available on the market than there was just a few years ago. I remember when the Bill Harsey designed Gerber Air Ranger came out about 12 years ago, people were raving about what a great knife it was for around $40 bucks. Adjusted for inflation, that's about a $50 knife today and for $50 you can now get a knife to that completely blows it away.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a secondary bezel on your blade??? I use the Worksharp Guided Sharpening System which I am very happy with and this gives you a primary bezel of 20° (or 17°) with the diamond plates followed by a 25° bezel from the ceramic rod. Most sharpening systems, including others from Worksharp, only seem to be set for providing a primary bezel.
DCA, I need me some sheepsfoot blades in your KniFAQ segment. Fixed blades, priced high and low, folders priced high and low. No warn cliffs. Sheepsfoot blades are my jam!
Hey DCA, can you recommend a flipper that prints like a slip joint? Depending on the crowd sometimes it's better to make a knife look like a two handed open. And obviously don't want the blade shape or Materials to be too tactical looking either. Thanks
Are folding knives too expensive? Answer: it all depends... on if you can afford a particular knife and if you are willing to spend the money. If you answer 'yes' to those questions, obviously the answer is 'no, they are not.' I, however, have limited funds so, yes, many are too expensive. I tend to go for brands like CRKT, Kershaw, SOG & Gerber, where you can find quality knives without breaking the bank.

Mora actually makes a floating knife with a handle made out of natural cork. So if you were to drop it in the water, you can just pick it back up 😉

I’m not rich but I do ok. I have purchased 3 knives over 300$ with one being $600. I still carry my bugout, esee 6 and SOG Kiku more than those.

For the tight budget guy, get a box cutter. Save up for the Spyderco Shaman, you will be glad you did. If you end up with with 6 knives under $300 except you will be enjoy giving them away.

I have loved knives since I was a little boy, I'm now 50 and still get mesmerized by shiny blades, I'm an engineering and materials junkie to boot (Hey, the first step is admitting it :) ) This is by far the best blade channel on UA-cam, always entertaining, informative and down to earth, DCA, you are a real pleasure to watch, I sincerely hope KC appreciate you for what you are worth.
There will always be great knives for all "classes." It's too valuable of a tool. You just have to know what you're looking for and how to maintain them.
This is just it. A lot of times a simple short fixed blade knife will do everything one needs and last a lifetime. One needs to learn how to sharpen the knife and keep it sharp, even if just cutting up boxes and such. It doesn't take long once you start doing it regularly.
I've been doing/reading up on wood carving and it shocking what the old Sweds can do with a utilitarian belt knife they use for everything day to day. This can also apply to a good, solid, folder you buy once and just keep in shape.
I don't know about "yuppie knives", but I do shipping/receiving/materials handling in an aerospace machine shop and I see what goes into milling a piece of aluminum. It ain't cheap. Even so, I save up and do use anything from a $30 to $200 knife on the regular. At work, camping, and hiking. I think it just depends on what you like and how you want to allocate your funds. No knock on anyone. There is something out there for everyone.
So glad you gave Voxnaes some love here! I've been a fan of his designs longer than I've known who he is, and I've only become more and more obsessed since I started seriously collecting. I almost always have one of his knives on me because they're so elegant and versatile.
Jesper Voxnaes' design is just so good I never hate anything he make, maybe less love, but yeah, never negative feeling about his design.

The advances and developments that happen in the high-end knife industry quickly become assimilated by lower-end knife companies, so it really does benefit everyone. Nowadays you can get many great budget knives for even the $20 price point. The other week I even got a super sharp 8Cr13Mov knife with ball bearing pivot and perfect action for $10 on sale. Hard to beat that!
I believe trickle-down theory may actually be working, in this ONE instance! ;) Deals are definitely out there, you just have to look for em.
The most expensive knife I currently own is the completely amazing, wicked, and unnecessary (for me) Cold Steel Vaquero XL. It was my first "grail" knife. Saved up a little and got it for $55 around Thanksgiving. Huge knife, excellent value.
I haven't broken the $100 barrier yet. Been eyeing some Spydercos and some Kizers at the moment, but my inner cheapo starts screaming! Ahhhhh LOL 🤣😅

Civivi knives are amazing! They are in the $50-60 range and feel and function like a $100+ range.. the new sub brand sencut is pretty sweet as well!
Schrade has good fixed blade offerings that are budget friendly, and tough enough for the beginner or seasoned survivalist/woodsman alike.

I think that things were never as good for the 'ordinary' knife collector like myself (generally sub $150), of course prices increase over time for everything, but you can build up a useful collection at about any budget, theres so many great options. Thanks David.
I would love to see the different properties of damascus from brand to brand. Very confusing when buying a new knife and all it states on the blade steel is "Damascus". A further breakdown of what steel/steels are in each blade would be great! Yes i know some don't always use the same properties every time, but an overall better understanding would be great!!! thanks!!! Even today, no one knows exactly how they made the original Damascus steel. What they are making today is simply "pattern forged" steel, but they call it Damascus because it sounds cool.
Look up the Ulfbehrt swords from ~9th to 11th centuries. Somehow, Mr Ulfbehrt was producing crucible steel a thousand years before it became mainstream.

After spending so much money on expensive knives, I am now looking at quality affordable knives under $100.00 , Some knife makers like Maserin, Cudeman , Otter Messer , Victorinox , and many others offer many choices of nice knives at reasonable prices . I just cannot justify paying $150 and up on knives anymore.

I look forward to Saturday’s! I love my Cold steel shovels but, I’ve never seen a knife I didn’t like! Every knife has its good, and it’s bad! I’m also big on EESE, I love all their stuff but, mainly their knives!
A sharp shovel is a heck of a tool / weapon. All my shovels get an edge and a light coating of paraffin wax melted on and wiped around...makes them easy to clean and keeps the rust off.
I'm a disabled detective. And I'm an artist. I love seeing the budget knives within my reach, the higher end knives up to $200-$250 that I might invest in once I get a handle on my budget knives, AND I absolutely love to see the $1000 + gorgeous works of craftsmanship 🔪🗡️ that cost more than Thomas' truck, or any truck/van I might buy. 🤣🤣 Thank you DCA & Thomas for showing us all these beautiful blades. I can't afford the beautiful $1000+ knifes but I sure love seeing them. They're works of art. I can't afford a Van Gogh, Money, Basquiat or Andy Warhol. I'm still going to enjoy looking at the works.

That’s another reason I’m sticking with Victorinox; for the design and quality you get so much value for your money. For a fixed blade you can get a good Morakniv for $20.
Have knives become too expensive. In some cases yes. In others price for material has gone down. It really depends on the company. DAC thanks for nailing that question. I would have killed to have this level of quality back in the early late 90's early 2000's.
I am newly poor and have been selling some of my “Good” knives. Honestly it has never been easier to find decent knives on a budget. As much as it pains me to say it, some of the knives from China are pretty good. Anybody with a job can afford a Buck, Case, or Gerber knife.

There are some knives that I would consider as being too expensive, but that's really just a matter of perspective, based upon what I personally can afford. That said, as an overall product, the majority of commercially manufactured modern knives are an extremely good value. From the vast assortment of high quality steels available, to the precision machining processes, along with the wide variety of handle and scale materials, you can get quite a lot for your money these days, especially in the $50 to $150 price range. A few decades ago, in order to have gotten anywhere near what you can buy for similar money in today's market, you'd have had to spend many more inflation adjusted dollars on a hand made knife done by a true artisan / craftsman.
Not sure what the future will bring, but I've always thought that Cold Steel are some of the best value knives out there. Really get alot for your money which is always a good feeling.
I'd say KaBar fixed blades are the best bang for your buck, considering knives that you play with in the woods

For the water/kayaking trips I personally have the salt version of the Spyderco Enuff. It's a great little fix blade. The serrations are great for rescue purposes but not great for spreading your peanut butter. That's why I have a Cadet in my mess kit
FYI I have 17 yrs of paddling and 7 yrs of being an instructor and 2 yrs of being on a national level team.
For me personally,I think the PM2/PM3 is the best designed folding knife on the market..it feels incredible holding it behind the choil and feels just as great when you choke up on the blade using the choil and thumb ramp.the compression lock is my favorite locking mechanism.I think the Benchmade Axis lock is equally cool but I trust the durability of the compression lock more.Ive never had any problems out of the compression lock but I’ve had the Axis lock spring break on a couple of Benchmades.last but certainly not least,I love that iconic wide leaf shaped blade with the full flat grind that Spyderco is known for.it makes for one hell of a slicer..in all honesty,I don’t think I will ever find find a better designed knife in my life.of course that’s not to say there aren’t many other excellent designs out there and there is obviously plenty of nicer higher end knives out there but for an actual user folding knife,the PM2/PM3 reign supreme

My current EDC at work is a Civivi mini-Mastadon. It's a fantastic box cutter. Fit and finish are top notch, the action is excellent, and the blade is thin enough to be a wonderful slicer, thanks to its full flat grind.
When I'm not working, I'm usually carrying either an Eskabar with TKC scales in a Armatus sheath, a TOPS Baja 3.0, or a Bradford Guardian 3. When I go to the lake, I carry my Spyderco Aqua Salt. I forget what they used to call it before they discontinued it, but so many operators carried the original and wrote to complain when Spyderco discontinued it, that they put it back into production using their H1 "steel."
(Is it actually steel if it doesn't contain any carbon? 🤔)
@@lvbuckeye my edc rotation is a crkt ignitor, ripple, and honey badger (small). Since now where I work is on a strict security/clearance location they have rules on what you can have. My honey badger or SAK is all I ever bring. I've found that for edc, 2-3 inches is perfectly fine. Cutting packages and zip ties are the most common use. But even if you had to cut up some snack foods it would be fine. So now I've shifted my mentality and for an urban edc I don't see a reason for more than 3 inches. I always thought that nutnfancy was wrong for saying that the sog flash I with a 2.5 inch blade was his go-to edc, but now that I have more experience, I couldn't agree more. Plus, I don't want to carry a 4.5 inch handle in my pocket when I can get by with a 3-3.5 inch handle. Experience>preconceived notions.

I think it's an overlooked modern luxury that knives, and yes even the $500 ones, are as inexpensive as they are. I am by no means wealthy, I make around 60K a year, but I can work one week and have enough money to purchase the most versatile multi-tool in existence that has quality to last my entire lifetime . An easy comparison to make is the cost of a sword in Europe during the age of chivalry or the cost of a katana in ancient Japan. That being said I want more and I wish they weren't so expensive

You can buy a seiko watch, a precision instrument for 200$ intricate gears in precise alignment. Or you get a piece of sharp steel with a "plastic" handle for 300 or more you decide on value
There is room for those "grail knives"... The ones handcrafted with the best materials and techniques.
The market is flooded with steel snobbery for the most part. Materials cost dictate the market values.
Everything makes sense.
But you will find on the lower cost spectrum a rollercoaster of prices not justified by style of manufacture or materials used. I always say, buyer beware. Do you research before pay a lot for a little.
Knife market pricing is just a microcosm of the larger market - think cars/shoes/purses/houses/stocks...it's up to the buyers to find the matching value.

Food Safe Mineral Oil ! Used it for nearly 50 years on knives and other tools with perfect success. I live in a humid enviroment, but I will clean off my knives when they get dirty or wet (incl. stainless)

The Civivi Elementum is a fantastic knife at a fantastic price. Have knives gotten too expensive? I guess the answer to that depends on what you think you need out of a knife. As I often say, my pick for the “best survival knife” is a 2” Victorinox Rambler, that sells for less than $30. That’s the knife I use for more utility tasks like opening boxes than any other, especially since in the modern era, people tend to get a little taken aback when I pull out a pocket knife with a 3.5-4” blade.
The Elementum won’t embarrass you anywhere. It’s well-made, attractive, good steel. The days of getting high end US made knives for $50-$150 are long gone, and the quality control of Chinese factories is getting better every year.

As an old carpenter I have no space for a tool that is not totally utility. I appreciate a decent steel and a knife that feels good in my worker hands, but I’d never pay more than $120 for any knife unless it was Excalibur. I have found many folders for under $70 that work great, but I’m not a fancy man.
I’ve been on a hiatus from pocket knives for over a year now. The issue of price not matching the proportional cost of production is the main reason I left. The question on excessive cost is not about the high end knives; it applies just the same to Spyderco, Benchmade, and others. It seems that these makers see the prices that custom makers can command and think they are justified in approaching those prices. Here is my approximation of the mass production materials cost for a typical Spyderco (also my favorite): $3 G10, $2.50 liners, $2.50 hardware, $7 blade, $1.50 clip. Labor, shipping, etc. cost is probably around $15 or less. The only reason they get away with charging $140 for that knife is the hype.

My three would be my Para 2 for everyday and game processing, which is what I use it for already. My ESSE 6 for camp knife and crashing through things as needed. And my Brant and Cochran ME made Allagash Cruiser Axe because an axe is how you make camp and live well in the woods.

I don't see how people complain about knife prices, if anything budget knives is where the true value is anymore. With s35vn and m390 being sold under $100 in knives with good designs, and high quality. With brands pushing value like civivi, cjrb and my favorite cold steel, you can get something really nice for about $50

They are all from Tops, 1095, tactical / combat, fixed blade, about the same size, around the same price, and lucky for me available on your site. How do they perform? How do they feel in the hand with and without a glove?

I think spyderco reasonably prices their knives because of good quality control and for a well known and trusted brand. However one knife that I believe is a bit overpriced is the dragonfly ($70) which IMO is a bit too much for the size and blade material. Just dropping it $10 would be a more reasonable price IMO.
I have been on a CIVIVI kick lately even got the wife involved with a Chronic. Great knives great actions and at around 50 bucks a pop not hard on the wallet. CRKT has some awesome budget stuff as well it is out there if you look.
Cold steel is one of the companies that make great budget knives as well as higher end knives. Its scary if Americans complain about knives becoming too expensive. As a South African a $70 knife is a R1000 knife to us. That money can buy alot of groceries. The big problem is that non American blade-smiths and knife companies are asking American prices but they could actually ask less, such a company is Halfbreed knives who are way over priced for what you get. A better bang for your buck is Work Tuff Gear knives.
On pivot lube:
Mineral oil is great but SuperLube makes food safe oils (NSF certified) that are nearly as cheap and can be had in lower viscosities as well.
It is my pick, even over Nano Oil, Knife Pivot Lube etc.
Zombie 3- cold steel Frenzy (light folding brain poker) Gerber DownRange Tomahawk & a Bayonet under your gun. (FYI- K-bar makes a bayonet for a pistol, so there is no excuse for not having a bayonet! )

I've got a question Mr. Andersen. Actually a couple questions about knife classifications. What differentiates a wharncliffe type blade from a sheepsfoot? Blade shape classifications seem to be all over the place and I'm not sure why. I see what I have always understood to be a wharncliffe called a sheepsfoot and vice versa all the time. Second question, what makes a knife "tactical"? In the knife world these types of things aren't always clearly defined. I know things can't always be clearly defined in every situation but I would appreciate your view as I truly value your opinion on all things knife related.

Food safe: I use Vaseline Petroleum Jelly. Inexpensive, effective, not food-safe as such, but does not kill you if you by accident forgot to wipe our blade before food prep (it is laxative, but never experienced that with the small amount that might be left on a blade used for food prep)
Ballistol is another safe choice and has tons of uses.
My favorite folding Knife type Old Timer.
Just like any products, sometimes you pay more for branding. You want a Bugout mini? You're going to get a $75 knife with a $50 dollar butterfly etched into the blade. People are willing to pay for it because there's a certain prestige that comes with owning a Benchmade vs a less expensive Chinese brand of the same materials and quality. You also may or may not get the same level of warranty if you need to repair or replace it.
But I'm also old enough to remember when steels such as VG-10 or 154cm were considered premium and only found in high end blades. Nowadays you can get them on $30-50 knives. So some knives are getting overpriced IMO, but in alot of ways for someone looking for budget knives, there's a lot higher quality available on the market than there was just a few years ago.
I remember when the Bill Harsey designed Gerber Air Ranger came out about 12 years ago, people were raving about what a great knife it was for around $40 bucks. Adjusted for inflation, that's about a $50 knife today and for $50 you can now get a knife to that completely blows it away.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a secondary bezel on your blade???
I use the Worksharp Guided Sharpening System which I am very happy with and this gives you a primary bezel of 20° (or 17°) with the diamond plates followed by a 25° bezel from the ceramic rod. Most sharpening systems, including others from Worksharp, only seem to be set for providing a primary bezel.

If you were going to carry one multi tool on a motorcycle to fix most things that could go wrong on a roadtrip, which multi would you pick and why?
Are folding knives too expensive? Answer: it all depends... on if you can afford a particular knife and if you are willing to spend the money. If you answer 'yes' to those questions, obviously the answer is 'no, they are not.'
I, however, have limited funds so, yes, many are too expensive. I tend to go for brands like CRKT, Kershaw, SOG & Gerber, where you can find quality knives without breaking the bank.
