The best part about this show was that Alan went to the Henry Cavill school of caring about and respecting the source material. Alan read every book so he could get his character DOWN, I respect dedication like that.

@@guyincognito8440 Dude, its just a show. Lee Child is a pretty good writer, but the whole Jack Reacher series gets pretty unbelievable as it goes along: not necessarily because it deals in unrealistic concepts, but because there are 24 books and in each one Reacher comes across some kind of crazy scam/scandal that he has to solve. Its unbelievable because nobody who's just walking across America is going to come into that many situations. I mean, sure, one or two, maybe even three or four (maayyyybeee)...but not twenty-four. I like realism in my entertainment, and it annoys me when they get obvious things wrong for no apparent reason, but going too deep on the 'realism' thing will ruin at least 95% of popular fiction, so I don't.

I read the first couple of books and Lee Child lacks as a writer. And he’s a Canadian who’s not down with the 2A. His lack of firearms knowledge shows up as a series of 80’s cliches about “cool/scary” firearms. They should have a pro look over his writing before they let it out into the wild. The basic stories are actually pretty good and maybe he smoothed out his writing style the way Vince Flynn did but I didn’t stick around to find out.

The thing they nailed with this screen translation of Reacher is that he thinks on screen, the pauses and lack of dialogue matter and they show it. Reacher is by design a simple character, he's credible/ competent because he's an ex military police, he's capable because his built like a brick sh*t house, and his not trapped by modern living, so (as a character) he can cause havoc to solve the immediate problem, but not deal with the fall out as he just move on (metaphor for the army?)

"Yes, Lee Child the author of Jack Reacher had creative control."
To an extent - but you can tell where it has story padding not seen in the books.
At least 1-2 episodes are straight filler content and it left me more than a little frustrated by the end.
Not to mention the part where he almost dies after ambusing a guy less than half his size with a fraction of his hand to hand combat experience due to his rich kid status.
No one can make me believe that Child's wanted to dilute Reacher in that pathetic fashion.
Also it felt like the series was trying way too hard to make Reacher seem more human instead of just letting his actions speak for themselves.
Having read the books after seeing the Cruise films I enjoyed both, but the books more.

I loved that Jack Reacher respected knife or club-wielding enemies as much bigger threats, given that even a wimp with a knife can take you out of the fight. I liked seeing that the more skilled bad guys fought better...though they seemed to take Reacher's hits a little too well sometimes.
Concerning the 1v4 (driver doesn't count) in the rain at the abandoned house--Reacher could have just shot them like the 1v2 in an earlier episode. We already know he can basically insta-kill 3 pedos if he gets the jump.
And how did the last guy keep coming up with the crowbar after taking Reacher hits? In turn, how did Reacher survive that many hits to the head with a crowbar? My suspension was being stretched near its limits, but boy was it fun to watch. That villain used the crowbar like he meant it.

I think reacher was probably taught to allow his head to more in the direction of a blunt object as it's hitting you to minimize damage, that with adrenaline can possibly allow someone to survive that many hits to the head and keep going, also helps if you learn towards the hit slightly so there is less leverage on the blunt instrument and therefore less force transmitted to your head. But yeah, it was epic watching him take out that whole hit squad, he acted carefully and didn't attempt theatrics which often kills my immersion in action scenes.

I did read the first book before I heard about the show, and I loved this new Reacher. I consider Cruise’s Reacher to be a “loosely based on” version now, instead of a “true to source” character. In my mind, he’s the underdog type, the one you aren’t intimidated by (because of his smaller size) that become a threat when you realize he can drop you in a second. New Reacher is immediately intimidating because of his size, but is silently intelligent and observant, which people might not expect at first glance. He liked the character so much that although he lacked the size he still gave it a try. However at the same time the Jack Reacher movie was being made Tom Cruise found a better fit for himself in the stealth reboot of Mission Impossible. In 2011 MI Ghost Protocol became a huge hit, then MI Rogue Nation, then MI Fallout, all 3 very succesful. Tom Cruise is now 11 years later making two MI movies back-to-back. Dead Reckoning Part 1 and 2 I think its all for the best that Tom Cruise could put 100% into MI instead of being divided between Reacher and MI. I am gonna predict MI Dead Reckoning Part 1 will be a frikkin awesome movie while now Reacher Season 1 with Alan Ritchson is a frikkin awesome TV-show. To sum it all up there are only WINNERS here :) I also believe that Top Gun 2 - Maverick will be worth the wait so Tom Cruise can win there too.

The ironic thing is that this does "The Message" quite well, it just doesn't have to rub our faces in it for the entire run time! A black detective and a female police officer are very much on "Message", but because someone can actually write a story, they are part of the story rather than being a box-ticker.
Any time a film or tv series needs to go "LOOK, LOOK, DIVERSITY!!! EMPOWERMENT!!!" at me, then it's actually failing at "The Message", But here it's simply the main protagonist is a bloke, one of the other protagonists is a woman, another is black, all have their strengths and weaknesses that compliment and counteract to make up a whole. The story is then like; can we get on with this cool plot now.
THAT for me is how to do "The Message". It shouldn't NEED cramming down our throats, it should just be well-written characters telling a great story. A well written female character that contributes her own skills and abilities to the overall plot while growing and developing as a character is a much better female empowerment message than a Mary Sue!

    • @glasgowc1
      @glasgowc1 2 роки тому +18

Yeah. I mean, 'The Message' would have had the female characters fight like men... but they don't. Roscoe is scrappy and brave as hell, and you put a gun in her hand and she can shoot as well as anyone else, but in her one hand-to-hand sequence versus a larger man she does *not* do the Buffy thing, she instead gets *tossed around like a beanbag* because that is what happens when a tiny woman has to fight a large hefty guy. She still won, but it was not by much, and it was definitely not by outmuscling her opponent. Or punching him. Or anything with bare hands.
Which was a delightful thing on itself, but an even more delightful thing when contrasted with Neagley's /successful/ hand-to-hand battle... because Neagley is not only unusually tall and buff for a woman, she was literally taller and more cut than most of the male cast. Seriously, woman must have gotten lost on her way from Wakanda, because I've seen wimpier-looking women in the Dora Milaje. So when /she/ wrestles with a guy, she's able to manhandle him enough to get advantage, then get herself clear, and then get her gun out, as opposed to being tossed around.
IOW, the show did not take a position of either men being superior hand-to-hand fighters /or/ women being superior, it took a position of 'it depends on how much advantage you have over your opponent re: size/speed/strength as well as skill, regardless of plumbing'. And when's the last time you saw a fictional property do that?

    • @mrcheesemunch
      @mrcheesemunch 2 роки тому +12

Exactly. It managed to work in black characters without having to have them practically stop and look at the screen and say "Racism is bad don't be racist"
I was half expecting Finley's wife to actually be more of a husband and they'd preach that way but gladly not.
To be clear I'm all for diversity it's just the blatant preaching that puts me right the fuck off, telling people not to be racist, homophobic, transphobic or whatever isn't the way to do it, the way you actually encourage people to change is to craft characters with these labels that people will actually like, loosening the hold peoples prejudices have. That's how I realized homophobia is pointless cringe anyway.
Talentless writers who only know how to have characters shout political messages at the screen shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a script.

My husband and I loved this show; spot on analysis on Reacher's personality and his knowledge of human nature.
One of my favorite scenes is when, after several episodes, he (and we the audience) think we know all there is to know about Finley when during a stakeout, as he's playing with his wedding ring, Reacher sarcastically tells him that it's time to get over his divorce. That's when Finley tells him his isn't divorced, his wife died and the reason he left Boston to move south was that he missed her so damn much, it was too painful to live where every street, every building, hell even the weather, reminded him of her. It shuts Reacher right up and he doesn't treat it like it's nothing. It's a great scene and one that really makes Finley's character make sense, why he's so stubborn and determined to do the right thing.

Which actually might be a good thing since it probably helped this series to be made. In my opinion the first movie is really solid, I like it. It's just a shame it was called Jack Reacher, because it got a lot of negative attention for "miscasting". Tom Cruise gave a good performance (duh, it's Tom Cruise) so if it was a crime-mystery-thriller movie with TC, and not a Reacher movie, I think ppl would've liked it more.

I think it still follows "THE MESSAGE", but the producers get this one right! It works through Rosco (and Neagly to an extent), who is a strong character on her own, without being a Mary-Sue. She gets angry, even violent when she needs to, and she's confident rather than condescending. (Hello Disney and Paramount, did you watch this!)
Her and Neagley both understand Reacher's personality and COOPERATE with him, rather than constantly berate his brutish behavior. They do get their well-placed one-liners in where appropriate, which keeps the dialoge snappy and balances the mood in those scenes well.

And I would be perfectly fine with that, if the plot actually progressed: in the span of 4 episodes (about 5 hours of screen time) they managed to introduce 1 single character that in the end turned out to be completely useless for the investigation because she just died in the most boring way possible before being of any help. The dialogs are also boring and at times even plain stupid. To be fair the only good thing are the fights that are really well choreographed. Overall the show is good but really frustrating at times

One of my favorite scenes in this show was when Reacher and Finlay were arguing and fighting in the parking lot and Roscoe got between them. She calmed tensions but didn't do the typical "stop comparing sizes alpha males" thing women do in most shows and instead just tried to stop angry and stressed people from harming one another. It was a breath of fresh air to see a woman act like an individual in a modern show

    • @glasgowc1
      @glasgowc1 2 роки тому +20

I also liked that unlike the usual 'woman stops two angry men from going off on each other' scene, Roscoe wasn't afraid to use her femininity as a weapon. Because while they didn't lampshade it, you could visibly see that what backed Reacher down was her unstated challenge 'Are you really willing to knock down a woman half your size who's never done you any wrong, just because she's standing between you and a guy you're angry at? Because I don't think you're that kind of asshole'. And it works, Reacher's just not going to lay a hand on her even though he could crush her with ease because she's right, he's an asshole but he's not /that/ kind of asshole. A scene that outlines that chivalry is a useful trait that helps men be better men without requiring women to be submissive? What heresy was this?

I have not seen the series but after hearing an interview with Lee Child a couple of months ago I read the book. I wasn't very far into it before I knew that CD would love this story. There were a couple of problems with the plot where the villains suddenly developed Storm Trooper Syndrome. This is where previously competent characters suddenly make obvious mistakes thus letting the hero escape from situations where otherwise they had him. A problem Reacher seems to suffer from since he sometimes misses obvious clues. In the interview the author admits he doesn't really plan out the story and it shows. All things considered the book is only fair.

I fully expected Reacher to be awful, low budget, action trash.
    And...it was, in many ways.
But it was awesome, low budget, action trash.
I fully expected the cute girl to be the 'brains of the operation,' like I expected the black guy to preach about oppression and slavery, but none of that happened.
Reacher was everything a military special operative should be - smart first, and deadly AF if the smart options don't pan out.
He never looked for a fight, but he never hesitated to punch some dude that needed punching.
The girl, Roscoe, was adorable, the black dude was an excellent police chief, willing to bend the rules to see justice delivered to the right place, and not once in the entire first season were we subjected to 'The Message.'
Thank God. I'm so tired of 'The Message' getting in the way of my entertainment.
    It's obnoxious.
This show and Peaky Blinders are pretty much all I've watched in months, cuz I cancelled Disney and Netflix.
So I torrent everything I watch. I'm sick to death of streaming services and the way they share shows.

I really wouldn't say it was very well written. It was fine, I think it was faithful to the book but it was very basic, certainly compared to a Le Carre novel or even a Tom Clancy...
The fights were clearly directed or whatever by someone never in one because there are lots of odd choices that seem superficially "realistic" but actually wouldn't be smart or work as well as some unrealistic aspects of fighting methods (including a car door protecting the man inside from a Desert Eagle) and a couple of continuity errors in fights.
I wouldn't say it is the actors fault they are working with a really off script which I think is accurate to the book. It was just an odd story, Reacher wasn't the sort of guy to want to do something by the book, they took great pains to stress that multiple times, yet he spends the whole series not going into the warehouse he knows is dodgy just so the twist is protected and the story can be padded out, and for such a smart man he misses the obvious idea the money is being made in America and used abroad (which is far more common people people in South East Asia are less likely to detect a counterfeit than an American) and makes some very stupid assumptions that always seem to work out for him.
It was good acting to portray the strange character of Reacher and keep it at least somewhat believable, but there was considerable issues with the actual story which had villains that make little sense, Reacher's own actions of trying to get evidence to work out who is doing what rather than just going into the factory they know to be dodgy and torturing someone for information (when actually they would have then found the whole conspiracy then because that was the twist but Reacher needed to be spun out for 6 more episodes...) the strangest part of it was no selling his brother's death the whole time, I was really expecting him to explode and start beating everyone up for answers but instead there was this kind of weird autistic psychopath no emotion thing, even though they seemed to be perfectly normal brothers, probably slightly closer than most actually...
Also how did the lady not immediately realise the FBI agent had to be a villain when she was attacked at the safe house? That was the most simple backbearing ever, only she, him and the family knew about that location, after he left some baddies instantly show up and neither she nor the family told anyone (logically she was checking nobody was following her before she turned off to the safe house, wasn't carrying anything that could track her, etc)
She should have shot him the second she saw him arrive again and likewise he should have assumed she would have worked him out and started shooting at her... Come to think about it it is never really explained how someone in the FBI (two people technically because his partner also used to do it) becomes totally OK with murdering and torturing loads of innocent women and children (I mean the money sure... But you only get into the FBI by being a certain type of person and while some have been corrupt it has always been more "criminals sell drugs why shouldn't we?" lower level type stuff, and at worst aggravated murder like tracking down and killing an ex wife and the man she cheated with, again bad but not quite the same as torturing innocent women and children to death...
I hope a second series is made from a better book, I get they had to do a different book than the Tom Cruise films and those films chose probably the best books, but honestly for a second series I'd like to see how they make it different than the film by doing the same story.

It was amazingly faithful to the book - but maybe that will happen when the author is heavily involved in the show. One great thing was that they were able to work in some really meaningful "flashbacks" that came from later books and stories. Killing Floor was the first book, and Lee Childs likely didn't have these later details in mind, but the scenes with his brother when they were in their teens added a lot. agree to the audiobook recommendation. I listened to a few while travelling, and pulled over and stopped a few times to better experience them

@@wittyroark True, but it continues in Legacy, and who knows, they may commission more. The books went way further on with Harry's journey, with him coming back with the DROP thing. I'm hoping for that.

@@wittyroark Bear in mind, Reacher is only one season in. It could go south. I sure hope not though.

There are 26 novels in the Jack Reacher universe. I'm eagerly looking forward to 25 more seasons of this!

Drinker literally is my favorite f@cking badass on UA-cam. He has morals, respect for society, film and overall the way people need to treat each other. He is also perfectly inline with my beliefs. I am 52 years old and grew up with Star Wars as a young kid in the theater at seven years old and it was a religious experience, I have now watched every single childhood memory destroyed by wokeism , the message and disgusting liberal bullshit. Drinker please keep fighting, you’re the only voice that really stands out on all the voices we have. I appreciate you man 👊🏻

A shame he's turned into a right-wing mouth piece for culture wars and a safe space for the brainwashed folk who buy into msm culture wars about wokeness.

That laughter at 1:47 was just so damn genuine 😂 Also, I might check Reacher out. Sounds like a good source of entertainment.

Wish had more show like such, also good luck with Doctor Strange 2, just watch such and have migraine thinking about how idiotic the whole story was, have fun, Drinker. :)

Am glad The Drinker got around to watching Reacher. This for me was probably the most pleasant surprise in recent years when it comes to new TV shows. Nothing woke at all about it. In fact, its almost a throwback to TV shows of the past with a burly, no nonsense tough guy as the main character. Looking forward to season 2!

Having read a dozen of Lee Child's books and pretty much every Sherlock Holmes story; Reacher reminds me of a modern-day Holmes. His perception and deductive approach could be right out of a Arthur Conan Doyle story. And yes, it's true to the book.

THE MESSAGE is definitely still present, it is just downplayed compared to the rest of Hollywood productions. The Killing Floor, the book the season was based on, does not include: the black cop getting jumped by neighboring cops because he's black; the girl cop Roscoe being some kind of borderline genius who narrowly missed out on being in the CIA; didn't include Neagley at all (though I understand why they wanted to include Reacher's Girl Friday early in a Reacher series, so I have no problem with them adding her in) and certainly didn't include a completely pointless scene in a strip club where Neagley stands up for all women everywhere by beating on a guy who is *gasp* touching a stripper while getting a lap dance. The Reacher show is without a doubt WOKE. It is just, like, a 4 on the wokeness scale whereas the average of Hollywood movies over the last 3 or so years has been around 7-8 on the wokeness scale, with the occasional 9 or 10 making the entire industry look bad. So, I agree, that by today's standards the Reacher show is absolutely fantastic. Thumbs up, looking forward to them getting around to making a season about my personal favorite Reacher book: TRIPWIRE.

Also, Neagley is white so transforming her into a black woman could be viewed as a "message" about diversity or maybe just a ploy to get black women invested in the show?

i think you're stretching it a little. For Finlay's beating, at no point they did mention his color skin. The two cops beat him up because they thought it was a burglary, which is most likely an excuse as they seem to be among the corrupted cops. It has nothing to do with race. As for the strip club scene, i agree that yeah the scene was defo just there to make Neagley a badass, but yeah you make it sound like the dude got beaten up for free and he did nothing wrong, when in reality he was being inappropriate with the girl and she was telling him to stop, to which he wouldn't listen and get violent. He defo deserved that beating.
To me it kinda shows an issue, where people hate woke so much now they see anything that isn't white and male as an issue. Don't get me wrong, i hate it too when the message is shoved down my throat, but yeah at no point do they refer to Finlay's race, except for the occasional snarky comment from Reacher, which doesn't push any message at all lmao, and at no point do they say Roscoe or Neagley are good at what they do *because* they are women. They just so happen to be black/women, that's all
