I also really liked the female pilot Phoenix. She came off as authentic, confident, and had strong leadership qualities without being arrogant(something recent Hollywood writers struggle with their female characters).
Wasnt that just awesome? I cant remember the name of the actress now, shes hot af. Bu the point was, there was no sexist joke, no lame "its a woman shes gonna get us killed" or such crap. She was and is there for the Mission, in the Fighter Weapons School. And as in reality, nobody makes such stupid statements. Everyone is judged on the field and on the field alone. Only there are questions asked (in the debriefing room actually), and only there are answered.
BTW did i mentioned how fucking hot Phoenix is?
When Maverick reprimanded her and asked her what she was going to say to her dead teammate's family if she caused his death, she accepted it. Not unlike Hangman, who was super cocky and had to have his ego checked. Audiences appreciate these qualities in characters. And yeah, she is lovely 😍

My thoughts exactly. She didn't act like a Capt. Marvel and can do everything. She had weakness and the movie didn't refrain from showing it. Glad the Navy greenlit this movie. They were short on pilots, now they have a 500% increase in recruits. This movie made it feel that anyone and any ethnicity can join the Navy without being woke like the Army recruit videos. It was so bad that they had to pull it. The military is stretched thin now because it went woke. There's no honor anymore when they don't operate as one, but as individuals. Stats already show that conservative households are the ones most likely to join the military, but they're reforming the military to ease up on standards, so you got pissed off leftist that don't even want to fight in wars, but is in the military for a scholarship.
There was some sexist banter but that's just part of working in the highly competitive fields of combat arms. That competitive spirit is what drives everyone to be better than they were the day before. This movie did a pretty fair job of capturing that.
Yes, other jobs can be highly competitive, but none of them come even close to the competitive nature of combat MOS's.
Pheonix was a great character, the writers didnt focus on the fact that she was female and didnt make an entire shitty arc about her having to overcome "discrimination", She was just a pilot and she was badass, thats it.

I feared the same thing. When the first trailer came out, there was a scene in the classroom, where the camera has her in sharp focus, and the male pilots are in soft focus. I thought, there's the stunning and brave GuRhL BoSs. She's gonna show the boys how it's done. I am very glad to admit I was wrong.

Tom Cruise is a weird guy and I don't support his whole cult activity, but this was cool of him. He was like "we used real planes and real speed, for the fans" and that's awesome. If a guy as crazy as him can have this attitude, WTF is everyone else in Hollywood's excuse? Refreshing to have a creator actually be grateful for their fans.
They used to do that in some of the old movies. ISTR Lights Out in 2016 had something similar.

I loved Tom’s message in the beginning of the film. Basically “We made this for you, we hope you enjoy it! Thanks for seeing it in a theater!” It was really heart warming

As a man who works at a movie theater, I can tell you that this movie is STILL going strong!
I live in Korea and it's been out for 2 months now and the movie theaters are still full. This movie is by far the best of the year imo
Saw the movie today (shame on me), they will not screen it starting tomorrow, and the room was half full.... i thought i will be the only one in the room but nope! Awesome movie!

I think what made this movie even better than the original was that the original movie focused more on the recuitment ad for Navy side, where as this movie actually told a story between Maverick and Rooster AND it still functions as a Navy recruitment ad.

It’s pretty rare that a sequel can be better than the original. Top Gun: Maverick really delivers.
Paramount not only just made Maverick better than the original Top Gun, but they also made Sonic 2 WAY BETTER than its original

This is perfect.
It has the message - Phoenix. Perfectly executed. Just one random girl, keeping up with men, without bs girl-boss moments, without being a love interest, without being better than Maverick without explanation.
It has expanded well on an old story without reverting to "old hag trying to relive his glory days" which is so common and which I 100% expected it to be

It actually makes sense that Maverick is still the best. Like they say in the movie fighters don't dogfight anymore. These pilots have only ever dropped bombs from kilometres away. Maverick is a relic from another era and has something invaluable to teach the next generation (as Ice knows and fights for). Maverick is the only living ace in the world at this point.
I appreciated the professional relationship between Phoenix and Bob. He has an awkward persona compared to other bravado pilots but he's in Top Gun for a reason. Phoenix knows this and doesn't berate her partner, but treats him as an equal. His quiet but efficient accuracy as a WSO match Phoenix's piloting skills and they make a good team.
This movie makes you realise how CGI has ruined the blockbuster genre. Over past few years have found myself getting bored and checking my watch halfway through films, but in Top Gun everything was so real and intense, it is a cliche but I was literally on the edge of my seat in the cinema.
Practical effects also made a huge difference in Fury Road.

Call me stupid BUT before seeing this movie i actually didn't realise why i prefer 80s and 90s movies so much more than the horseshit of today. And im 33.
It is literally because movies these days are probably 90% an animated movie with very little Real effects.
@@mattpatt199 Practical effects are expensive, and in the "olden days" they used them in harmony with the storytelling , to achieve a maximum of emotional impact.
The best example is Jaws, where they could not use the animatronic shark as often as they wanted, so they used the mystery to create suspense, and used the animatronic shark only where there was no other choice. And the movie came out much better for it.
Same with Jurassic Park, where they used both animatronics and CGI, but if you watch carefully, the focus is on the characters and their reaction more than on the dinosaurs.
Then CGI became cheap, so they overused it. Everything is over the top, you have hundreds of cars exploding, things fly all over the place.
More explosions, more stuff flying around, 100 cuts in one scene, the camera is shaking around, to blur the image so you can't see the lack of details on the CGI work.
It's a lot of stuff happening on screen without any emotional impact, which cheapen the whole experience.
Now, watch any CGI fest and compare it with Fury Road, where all cars are real and every explosion, every car crash has a much greater impact, because it is tied to the story.
That's what also part of what made Edge of Tomorrow so good, because they chose to use a lot of practical effects, instead of going for the cheap CGI route for everything.
And because the scenes in modern action movies are filmed with green screen, they have to compensate the light in post production, to take all the green hue away. So every scene has that awkward lightning thing going on.

Maverick is the Luke Skywalker we deserved.
It makes me sad to think how great it would have been to have Luke given this treatment. Older, wiser, slightly more bitter and nuanced but not a pathetic loser who failed at absolutely everything and just gave up. Fucks sake it's hard to even type this 😣

I was really suprised how there was little to none politics in this movie. I mean the young pilots were diversed but it wasn't really in your face like in most movies nowdays. And the prominent female pilot wasn't mary sue that is good at everything with zero flaws.
Like Princess Leia, or Sarah Conner, or Ripley. Strong women who were leads/co-leads, drove the plot and weren't perfect...

It was so refreshing.. "diversity" doesn't have to be in your face. it's been in movies for literally decades at this point. you don't have to mention someone's race, sex or ethnicity, just let the actor play a damn character, THAT'S how you do diversity

The mission had HUGE star wars trench run vibes, the canyon, the 3 meter target, Rooster even took the shot without a computer! All that was missing was Maverick saying "Great shot that was one in a million" and Goose saying, "The force will be with you, always"
Now, when we watch ANH, as Luke is zooming down the trench, we'll figure he's saying in his heart, "Talk to me, Ben."

When the credits rolled and the text "For Tony Scott" appeared, that put a smile on my face. This was a team that sought to remain true to the source material and honor the legacy of the former director who directed it. If only Disney showed Star Wars the same respect.

I saw Top Gun1 in 1987. My pa was WW2 RAF so I respect US but don't go overboard. Of its time - Reagan gung-ho simplistic politics. So many *heavy duty theatres of conflict* over the past thirty years, we've learned so much -makes this sequel seem uninformed and embarrassing. People would ask themselves - we can supposedly do all this, yet in *real life* not have the will to impose a no-fly zone over Ukraine - which they themselves requested.

Israel destroyed 2 nuclear weapons plants (Iraq and Syria) and had (allegedly) sabotaged nuclear weapons facilities in Iran multiple times.
And god knows how many other secret, operationally semi-suicidal missions have been carried out over the years.
This movie was like stepping back in time, and remembering when movies were just pure entertainment, emotion and a visual spectacle. Really enjoyed this film.

This was the first "movie" I've seen in a while. It wasn't a Disney movie, it was a Marvel or Star Wars movie. They all feel inspired by each other or not trying. Maverick was just a damn good movie that felt it needed to prove itself, and it did so in spades.

When friends and family text me saying "I bought TGM 5 days ago and have watched it 9 times." Is all you need to know it's the best movie in the last 10 years probably.

Phoenix was a good way to write an action girl. She's a bit cocky, but she's not insufferable, and when she freezes up when Maverick asks her what she would say at Bob's funeral to his widow, and she has absolutely no response. She is humbled without cruelty, and she learns.
I was thinking the same! She's how you write in a strong female character without making her unrealistic or insufferable.
There are a lot of damn good female fighter pilots and they deserve recognition but not worship like typical Hollywood would do.

Maybe in a perfect world. But in reality, SOME men may be wisened by the experience maverick went through. A WOMAN however, unlikely.

The take away about her character is she's incredibly competent, but not perfect. Super believable and someone you can empathize with as an audience. Her gender isn't really even a thing in the movie.
The sensitivity they showed with Val Kilmer's disability...they still made those moments powerful, and the words he actually spoke conveyed something. And Jennifer Connelly...man, she's still freaking gorgeous no matter how old she gets.

Val and Tom were great in that scene.
I almost cried when I watched that. I don't know if his voice is actually hoarse like that or he made it up, but it was emotional regardless
@@L16htW4rr10r yes, his voice is actually like that. Unfortunately in 2017, Val Kilmer battled throat cancer. And after treatments and surgeries, he's lost most of his physical ability to speak due to the tracheotomy he had to have.
I love how despite that he doesn’t have much time left, Iceman still plays a huge role for the Navy in what he can do, even vouching for Maverick whenever he still being the same old dude every single time. Sheesh considering Maverick’s record, you would think he would’ve been fired by now. But if it wasn’t for Iceman, they probably would have just been following under Cyclone and Warlock’s command.
This movie was simply PERFECT. Thank you Tom, you truly are the last great action star.
Maverick’s attitude is summed up when he said to the generals ‘I never expected an invitation after what happened’ but the general says ‘they are called orders Maverick.’

Just watched this movie for the first time tonight. Is it any wonder that it’s been such a massive hit? Modern audiences have been subjected to the cynical BS that Hollywood insists on shoving down our throats, so when you have a movie with actual character arcs that makes you feel good after watching it…it’s as if you’ve drank from a freshwater spring for the first time in ages.

TopGun Maverick was always going to be Tom Cruise’s legacy so we should have known he wouldn’t accept anything less than perfection but I was absolutely floored by how shockingly good this movie is.

He's the star, but unusually he used his star power for good, as you get the feeling he was never going to accept a film that didn't keep him as the number 1 actor, and didn't stay true to the film that made him.
Since Tom was One of the Producers, He dosen't want a Fictional Character he played get Ruined.
This is how the Star Wars sequels SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE! Giving the old cast one last bit of glory, yet letting the younger gen participate, too.
It makes you weep at the lost opportunity. In fairness though the original series cast is a bit older and they don't take care of themselves the way Tom Cruise does.
Imagine it: A Star Wars sequel where we, through the viewpoint in a new generation of characters, got to go along on an adventure with Han, Luke, and Leia....

I've just watched this movie a couple of minutes ago. It was the best movie I've seen this year. I laughed, i smiled, i was worried, i was hyped, i clapped. So many emotions, so much suspens.

And i loved the credit showing the actors, their stage name and their real name. It was a good throwback touch.
I basically went back to 25 years ago when my mom used to take to the movies after school, waiting for my dad to get off work and pick us up.
I will definitely watch it again.
The characters were well-balanced.. Although they had Phoenix as a female pilot but they never portrayed her as cocky and overwhelming..
she was a good character! she was co-operative and caring of her comrades. I think her being female was only mentioned like once by the cocky pilot Hangman, who was supposed to be a jerk
You know, you should realise how much more problem the message thing is causing, like just seeing her you expected her to be bad. Even though she was just a great fucking character.
Yeah, the whole movie actually measures up to all of those woke films in diversity, but it's not aggressively virtue signaling, it just has good characters.

@@sqwalnoc It's mentioned a few times actually, but all in hazing/good fun. These alpha groups always attack each other where they are weak. Hangman tests her resolves by poking fun at her gender and she ignores him because her excellence puts her above such petty insults. It comes across as very genuine to me.
I'm a 41 year old man and I took my son, 9, to watch Top Gun Maverick. Same age I was when I watched the original.
I have to say that this movie brought many tears to my eyes, I was actually overwhelmed by its awesomeness and it reassured me that the woke haven't won.
Maybe they will in the end, Sir, BUT NOT TODAY.

Finally, a movie sequel not obsessing over having to include “the message” and instead focusing on actual quality content. Usually, the nuttiest actors are the best ones, and Tom Cruise proves that.

Finally watched it today. Not only did I love it, but even my wife that never likes my movies loved it. It really was awesome.
The very definition of escapism. At no point in this film was I ever thinking of anything except what was on the screen. Something I haven't experienced in decades while watching a movie. Masterful storytelling and movie making.

nothing but cgi artist nerds left alive, where they found the crew to make this one we shall never know (defintely wasnt the church of scientology breaking the laws of physics and reality to help their saviour make a bette movie)

What is it with you fools and constantly belittling cgi as if it's a contagious plague? It doesn't matter if special effects are done by models or computers, everything on screen is all fake, an illusion.
Any comments on the soundtrack? That was a real strength of the original and I'm hoping there's some equally badass/uplifting tracks in this one. Or did they re-use the original songs like Danger Zone and Mighty Wings?

Yeah, budget of "Turning red" was 175 000 000 (I'm curious, why?), while budget of TGM was 170 000 000.
That been said, it reportedly cost $11k per hour for jet fighter use
WW84 had a production budget of 230 million $ .... and the CGI looks like dogshite.

Top Gun was the first movie I ever saw in a movie theater. My dad took me. Tomorrow I get the privilege of taking my own son to his first "grown up" movie in a theater, and I'm also taking my dad.
We're going to the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum to look at planes to get hyped and then watching it in the LEGIT IMAX. Not the bullshit "Imax" screens they toss into random movie theaters now. Gonna be a hell of a day, fellas.

Agreed on all points. Wanted to add that this movie is "diversity" and "representation" done right. Many of the young pilots are minorities of some kind or another, but crucially that is never the point. The movie does not draw attention to this, it is presented neither as an obstacle nor a strength, it just...doesn't...matter. There is no "message" there, other than I'd say an implicit message that no "message" is needed nor wanted.

I totally agree and this is one of the things I appreciated most about the film.. how everyone was treated as a kickass fighter pilot, there was no singling out or special treatment, kinda how it is supposed to be. If Hollywood just followed this guideline we wouldn't be divided over 'woke-ism', we would all just be cinema fans.
This is the way it should be done. I would also point to "The Expanse" which even ticks off a lot of the modern checkboxes with alternate sexuality and all that, but it's not done for show, or to score points, it's just part of the story, and since the story is good and the actors are good, it doesn't matter.

This movie is the first time in recent memory that I've actually genuinely felt something while at the movies. Between the nostalgia, the adrenaline, the highs and lows I can't remember a time I've been more engaged in a movie. And to see it in theaters with the sound of the jet engines shaking the seats was a truly visceral experience and I can't wait to see it again!

Top Gun Maverick also feels like a long awaited sequel that was actually worthy of coming out. It didn’t screw up the continuity like Independence Day Resurgence and didn’t copy the story of the original beat for beat like Mary Poppins Returns. Maverick expanded the original and gave us a stellar and satisfying spectacle
This movie was absolutely incredible. As Hangman says in the film: “this is your savior speaking” applies to Tom Cruise saving modern cinema over the past couple years. Finally a great movie

I'm honestly glad for that, because it really made me appreciate Top Gun even more.
I was not only surprised to love this movie, I had to get corrective surgery on my jaw to fix the position it got stuck in. It's been so long since we had a movie that made you want the heroes to succeed leaving you on the edge of your seat. Maverick doing the test run and completing it well below the limit was one of the most exciting scenes in a movie since 1917. I think we would all love more movies like this instead of the shit we've been getting from other studios.
Hollywoke version:
-Maverick is a homeless alcoholic who decided to forsake the Navy after the death of Goose
-He is invited back to Top Gun to train pilots for a mission to destroy a secret Nazi base in Texas
-He is introduced to one of the selectees, a young black/Vietnamese bisexual woman
-she exceeds Mavericks skills at every turn in the sky, even beating him in a hand to hand sparring match that happens for whatever reason
-Rooster is an edgy dickhead disgruntled over his fathers death who gets beaten down and mocked constantly

I saw this when it first came out a few months ago and I'm still excited by it. They really pulled something off with this film.
My Dad loved Top Gun. To him, it was the coolest movie ever made and that adoration for the film rubbed off on me and sparked my interest in aviation.
I was teary eyed throughout the whole movie because Top Gun: Maverick was the perfect sequel anyone could've asked for to happen, especially with how they handled the characters. I was almost balling my eyes out when Val Kilmer came on screen because there was no way Tom Cruise would've done this movie without his Wingman and I'm so happy he got to be a part of it given all the health issues he has.
My Dad would've loved this movie if he was here today and I appreciate everyone involved in this movie making sure it came out the way it did.

I watched this movie with my dad last night. He also loved the original. My dad is not really a movie guy, but he was so happy during the whole movie and talked about it for hours after. Truly filled with joy lol. Im sure your dad would have been the same way.

I watched this film with my mum last night and we both loved it. It was truly so immersive, the air scenes were ridiculously impressive, and I couldn't care less that the plot was simplistic in nature; the band of characters worked, and I agree that this film excels on a 'passing the torch' type of plot without feeling disrespectful to those who came before. I also liked how it was easy to follow for those who hadn't seen the first film, like my mum and I, but you could easily catch up and didn't feel like you were missing anything. My heart was racing during the third act and wouldn't stop soaring once the ending commenced - what a perfectly cheesy happy ending it was. I felt sad getting out of my seat and wanted to do it all over again. Easily the best film of 2022 for me.

First movie I saw multiple times in the theaters in years. It was a movie you HAD to experience in the theater and was MORE than worth the time of admission.
Honestly the secret of the 80's and 90's was always unapologetic liking of a thing, instead of this shit attitude internet culture instilled in us where unironically liking things was bad and you have to mock anything you make. 80's and 90's didn't give a fuck if you thought they were cringe, that was a you problem. I miss that energy.its good to see it start coming back.
The thing about being genuine is that it's a vulnerable position to place yourself in. If you say "Haha, look at how stupid and ironic everything is!", you're dissuading people (deliberately or subconsciously) from weighing your story on its merits. It's literally the b-movie mindset. If you present honest joy or, worse, ask people to take you seriously, you lose that shield.
It really shows that modern writers know that their work is trash.

It's like the guy in the club who's rat-arsed and dances like a frog in a blender: he knows he can't dance for shit, but he's too delirious and hopped up on the hype and the atmosphere that it doesn't matter, and people can respect that.
In any case, I'm glad it's returning too. I still like deconstruction and questioning things, but films like this work as amazing palate cleansers and are needed now more than ever.

Saw Maverick in the theater last week. Damned if it wasn't a throwback to blockbusters of old. Yes, there is some cheese, predictability of plot and character development, and forced nostalgia but it wasn't over the top. I came away feeling like a kid going to the movies. I took my brother and our 60+ year old mom to see this movie and it was a blast.
Respect for it's past while absolutely being it's own thing, respect for it's protagonist, every character is allowed to be human and not some walking diversity ad, race or gender is never mentioned and never matters in anything (except the romance between maverick and penny), had me tearing up in certain scenes and on the edge of my seat for others, wasn't a CGI overload shitshow.
Tom Cruise and everyone involved deserve a medal for proving that movies can indeed be something fantastic even today.
I would happily pay to watch this in the movie theater again.

One of the most impressive things about this movie is how it dealt with the nostalgia part. Usually with this kind of sequels they milk it like there's no tomorrow, relying on it for the sake and success of the movie. But with Top Gun: Maverick it's different. It only gives you what the story needs to and delivers it in a classy, emotional and well dosed way. What a movie!
+ They learned from Cobra Kai it seems. That is the model to do things based on a past franchise.
Nostalgia is used just to show it's the same world. Not to throw on your face. And that was so assuring and good.

The nostalgia baiting is just as strong as any other sequel- what's different is this movie respects the first movie. Maverick is an awesome hero and they don't deconstruct that to pass the torch. If this movie was made by the usual suspects Maverick would've been incompetent and shown up by the new pilots at every turn.
This movie it's amazing. After watching it I feel motivated, powerful and capable of doing things I've never done in my life.

My brother and I ditched Thor to watch this. And I am so glad we did. Saw the first one when I was a boy, and hadn't seen it for years. But I enjoyed the movie to the fullest, none the less. I'd say this movie would have kicked ass even if you hadn't seen the first one, because this movie manages to seamlessly tie in the first movie while delivering another great story, just as great as the first one.

Poor pops goes thru Kidney dialysis 3 times a week...stays home basically all the time and doesn't do much,up to me to take care of him.
So i got him a big ol' hard desktop hooked up to the tv with a gazillion movies,once every 2 or 3 weeks he asks me if i want to watch Top Gun with him and yeah i always do,nice father and son moment.
Knew the movie was coming out but my pops is not in good shape so instead of going on opening day we waited for a couple of months,then i took him to the movies to watch Top Gun: Maverick and we made a day out of it...even let him break his diet and we ate a whole bunch of KFC.
Pops was so happy when he came out from watching the movie,me too...i mean when it comes to films from the 80's Top Gun is up there at the top of the list.
We loved the movie,no pandering to the wokeness that is so prevalent in Hollywood these days,just clean fun and a good time,that is all we can ask for.

About half way through the movie, I was thinking, the reviews were probably overhyped and nostalgic but the final act of the movie blew my socks off. From the moment Maverick does the test run to the end of the film, was just pure, unadulterated, edge-of-your-seat joy. The escape was so over the top, far-fetched but forgivable because of how awesome it was.
Fun Fact, What Maverick and Rooster did has been attempted 2 times in Movies based on 3 real attempts by shot down airmen to get onto an enemy airfield and steel an aircraft to escape during WWII. First attempt had an escaped Luftwaffe POW (shot down during the Battle of Britain) got on to an RAF airfield and tried to steal a Hurricane. He actually was in the Cockpit trying to start it when he was recaptured. The film was called "The One that Got Away" and the German in it later escaped in Canada and got to the USA before they declared war and got back to Germany. The other movie is the Great Escape. In that film two British Airmen steal a Me-108 Trainer after getting out of Stalag Luft III. They managed to take off, but crash after running out of fuel. That part of the film was based on two escapes, One British and One German. The British one had two guys get out of Stalag Luft III in an escape before the big one, they got on to the airfield and into the cockpit of the Me-108 but couldn't work put how to start it and were caught. The German one had two Luftwaffe pilots escape from a British POW camp, get on to an RAF Airfield and into the cockpits of a Mile Magister Trainer, which they were able to start and take off in. They flew from Yorkshire to Norfolk with the plan to fly to Holland, but ran low on fuel and landed in a field with the hope of getting some fuel to finish the trip, then they got recaptured. The one thing Maverick would have nailed in his memory is how to start a Tomcat and fly it.

As a 21 year old, who saw Top Gun 1 a few years back, this film took me by surprise. Perhaps it’s due to my young age or inexperience with cinema, but it’s so rare for me to watch a movie and then feel like I ate a hearty meal with my family and friends, happy and content.
Top Gun Maverick managed to prove itself to be a phenomenal sequel that improved on its predecessor, but also, as Drinker described it, made me feeling better afterwards.
To me, it’s such a rare feeling these days. What an incredible movie.

I’ve had a terrible year. Dealing with the passing of a loved one who was a giant part of my life, and having to watch my father deal with the end of a 14 year long engagement, & a 16 year long relationship was too difficult to explain on here. The reason I mentioned it is because the experience of that sort of pain forced me to appreciate the feeling of the smaller good experiences throughout the year. And going to see this movie in the cinema was the best experience I’ve had this year. I wasn’t a big fan of the original, nor did I like Tom Cruise at all before watching it. But I exited the theatre with a massive smile on my face after having probably the best cinema experience of my life. Film is a minor passion of mine, and witnessing firsthand that going to watch a movie at the cinema isn’t as obsolete as I thought it was cheered me up a lot. I was sad about the death of cinema, but I can see that as long as movies like Top Gun Maverick are being released, then cinema will never die

I love what they did with Iceman. In the original, he was consistent, by the book aviator that chastised Maverick for rule breaking. Perfect person to go up the ranks to become a fleet commander. I had no idea Val Kilmer had throat cancer. I thought that was just part of the movie. I loved the movie. It was great!
The original Top Gun is a good movie once you realize that Goose and Ice are basically the actual protagonists and Maverick is actually the out of control lunatic that Ice accuses him of being. Note that Rooster is much closer to being the Iceman equivalent here (cautious, team player) vs. Hangman's cocky douche that feels more like the modern Maverick updating.

Tom Cruise is the right type of crazy in Hollyweird, he wants real stunts no agenda and shockingly a good movie.
Who would of thought someone could make a sequel that's actually good in 2022!
Tom is good in almost everything he's in. Usually don't see him in any bad films either. Not that I could remember at least.

@@gj9157 but that was directed by Alex Kurtzman and Tom Hanks was only an actor in that one.
As an Air Force veteran, I have a hard time suspending my disbelief of this film for the following reasons:
1. Pete Mitchell was a Navy Jr. Lieutenant in 1986, making him about 24 year old. fast forward to 2021 (going with the movie release date), Capt Pete Mitchell would be 59 years old. Because I am retired military, I know that Maverick would have been forced to turn in his wings and head up a commend. Or, the Navy would have asked him to retire because of Mavericks inability to attain the rank of admiral in the U.S. Navy. I am not even accounting for the number of physical requirements that Maverick could longer meet to keep his flight status (aging eye's, aching joints, aging reflexes and poor judgement).
2. Goose's kid was 4 in 1986. Making him about 38 years old. If Goose's kid couldn't cut it as a navigator by 38, the Navy would have reassigned him or denied his enlistment.
3. In today's world, the U.S. military has drones that could've completed the objection in this movie. But as The Drinker say's "I guess the plot needed to happen, so whatever".
It would've been harder to Hollywood script writers to tell a tale about a retired Navy veteran who's having diffuculty coming to grips with what he is today. But for "nostalgia's sake, and to stroke an aging Tom Cruise's ego, it's easier to tell a tale of fast planes, fast Moto's, beer and men laying more pipe in 304's than Glasgow's plumbing inc.

Just saw it tonight and loved it! I really like that there’s one solid story line, and how the references to the first one are subtle enough. All in all a very enjoyable movie. Maverick is what they should have done with Star Wars, if you think about it.
This movie reminded me that the term "feel good movie" actually derives from movies making you feel good after seeing them. I've never seen Top Gun, but I decided not to catch up before seeing this one to see if it could win me over without nostalgia... It did in spades. I'm fat and 40 and I still want to apply for the academy after seeing this movie.

Wow, 40 and never seen TopGun? When I consider it, I can absolutely see how possible that would be. I'm 46, so was in the prime time "albeit younger part" demo for the original movie. Can't remember exactly how old I was, and am too lazy to open another tab to see lol, but I, to this day, am completely obsessed with fighter jets, and keep up closely with what's new, because of the original movie. But man, how awesome it would be, to be able to watch this movie for the first time, at an age where you can appreciate what came before, and yet, not be influenced AT ALL by what came before, and then get to go enjoy the original, and have all the callbacks, and easter eggs pop out at you. I've not seen it yet, I will, before it leaves theaters, hopefully, but I'm happy to know how good it's going to be when I can go see it.
@@publicprofilename4273 I'm 44. I was 8 when it came out in 85 and my parents let me see it in the theater with them (they covered my eyes for the love scenes, no joke). Top Gun was probably the most iconic blockbuster of my pre-teen life. For the next year or two after seeing it all the kids were riding their bmx's, huffy's, and schwinn's around the neighborhood pretending to be all the different pilot characters. I did see the new one a week or two ago. I just can't let the first one go, it was just too epic in my childhood. The cast was conspicuously diverse and I didn't get much patriotism, but I'll have to watch it again; maybe I wanted it to be woke so I could hate it. Instead, I definitely enjoyed it, a lot. My eyes may or may not have leaked a bit during a couple scenes. Other than Maverick, the characters weren't larger than life like the first one, but that's probably just my bias. You say you're obsessed with fighter jets. Ever heard of DCS? If not, give it a look -- hands down the most realistic, immersive, and complex combat flight simulator you can buy, and they've got all the jets you could possibly want, meticulously modeled.

This dialogue pretty sums this movie and Cruise in current state of affairs and the direction hollywood is taking,proper passionate movie star making a movie that didn't gave an f about message or promoted wokeness or capatilized brands,just an honest to god action movie for you to enjoy and forget about the world,i haven't enjoyed a movie this much in theaters in a very long time and i am gald to see its sucess,but there is no denying such actors and movies are a dying breed.
Only for now, there's a bit of a resurgence going on under the hood. Things like this, the northman, Reacher, Terminal List, etc, I think some of the movie and TV industry is slowly waking up to the fact that good show= more money, forced, unwanted message = lost money.
As much as the message has taken over everything, businessmen are ultimately businessmen(even the dumbasses that caused this mess) and are going to gravitate toward the money.

The movie has been out for MONTHS and the theater was completely packed tonight. My family bought the last three tickets! It was amazing! Funny thing, I didn't see any showings for Lightyear. I wonder why . . .
Late to the party, just watched it yesterday. THIS is how you make a sequel with respect and enthusiasm. THIS is how you pay tribute to your older cast, while having a new one too. THIS is what the film industry has been missing for so many years. 👏👏👏👏👏

Yes it still upsets me what could have been if only Disney had been half as respectful and caring about Star Wars and the original characters as Tom Cruise and his crew are about Top Gun Maverick…
