And I heard the actor was a replacement, the original guy backed out after filming a ton of stuff already so a lot had to be reshot. Apparently he's a part time actor, too? Does this stuff for fun. Not sure if that part is true but if so more respect to him, he absolutely fucking nailed it in this. Loved every second of Freddie Stroma in the show.
Wrong. Vigilante was a tortured DA that got sick of criminals walking. He was intelligent and calculating. He was never what this series tries to make him.
@@mrthewubbie neither is peacemaker, but when adapting something you can take some liberties so that it fits the story you want to tell. In this case, Gunn wanted Peacemaker to be an Action Dramedy, so he tooled Vigilante to be more comedic both in origins and personality. Who knows, we might get another vigilante that's more faithful to the comics
The white dragon being written as irredeemable and evil for no reason was actually a decision Gunn made because he felt most villains in modern media are nothing but redeemable
I never thought about that being the reason and it can make sense but I feel like theres a lack of justification for racism thats needed in the world today.

It was an unexpected delight. All of it. The dialogue the characters, the music. Every episode ended leaving you wanting more. And never skip the intro
I liked the suicide squad and gave the show a chance. Never would've thought it but John Cena is perfect for the role, the show is quite good and the music it introduced to me is incredible.

The moment he breaks into tears isn't just because the team hates him, it's because he thinks the entire world hates him. He honestly wants to be a hero but thanks to his father he is incredibly flawed and it really bothers him.
i like to see it as how some actual people deal with certain things in their lives. like, some people act tough and pro killer to impress those around them because of an internal struggle to connect with others, which might have been something they were never able to accomplish or even achieve early in their lives. but when you figure out that everyone hates you no matter what you do, it mentally tears you down and then the cold but painful truth starts to click when reality strikes back and the only way you can cope with it is by just letting out all of your bottled up feelings out in simple sadness and tears. the age old stereotype in which men aren't suppose to cry because it shows weakness is something that hits. makes you think that guys got problems too and not just women. it makes it feel real, human, and sometimes even relatable. but those are just my thoughts on it
Cena is crazy talented, he was even fun in the WWE back in the day until the bland creative direction he was given turned him into Hulk Hogan 2.0. Sadly that's how most people remember him.
If you had to improvise segments on Raw for over a decade because the All Knowing Boss rips off the script of the show 30 minutes before it starts, you would be able to play in this kind of environment.
I always got the sense that he honestly could have cared less about being in Fast 9, and was hoping The Suicide Squad would be able to have been meaty enough for him to be invested in. And the comparison is night and day. Was real pleased to see he clearly liked the material more in the later and was investing his ability in it instead of 9, which I don't blame him.
The bit with Vigilante doing Peacemaker's hit was the sweetest way I've ever seen a man kill a whole family. "Hey, dude? Move over for a sec.." Everyone needs a friend like Vigilante.
I actually added it to my UA-cam favorites. This along with King of the Hill, and Community’s intros will forever be part of their respective shows’ identity, in my opinion.
I enjoyed the show myself but was curious to see what people like the drinker and yourself thought about it. John Cena and James Gunn definitely knocked this one out of the park
lets face it here, the semi serious over the top dance scene already made this a "WTF i gota watch this" vibe that you can't just turn away from. That intro gets me every time.
Maybe a decade ago when everything didn't have the message in it. Now I just assume it's garbage until proven otherwise. Not gonna watch this becuase the message is in it. Can be otherwise the best show ever made. You defend racist pedophiles and act like the black man is God's gift to the world and I won't watch your shit.
I skipped that vomit-inducing bullshit every episode. Dance numbers are the last thing I want to see on screen. Nothing more embarassing than watching people dance around like idiots to shitty music.
I personally thought the scene that had him crying alone in bed was, well, pretty accurate for cats like Peacemaker himself. He's a strong advocate of an outward appearance of strength and intimidation however homie has EXTREME levels of PSTD that slides across multiple markers. Since we are watching a television show he vocalizes what he was feeling internally; alienation. They need choose him because they need him yet they don't like him and would rather not be in his company. Alongside with him JUST recovering from a injury acquired while committing actions that led to the same conclusion and you get this; a large, deadly muthafucka who is having an emotional overload.
I think it’s a message about mens pain and having to put on a mask in front of others. How we can’t really show emotion without being ridiculed for it, so we sit alone with our emotions and let it fester, which makes it get worse over time
I disagree. The character was a true stoic in the novels and raised from a small child to be a warrior. In the books, his sidekick you call Vigilante had that scene. The scene where sidekick is tricked into a mission behind his back resulted in this small child getting killed. Over the 12 books, the sidekick has the arc to discover the value of life and put aside total indifference to violence. The loss of the child had the sidekick really upset. In the show plagiarized from the books, Peacemaker absorbs arcs from the sidekick. As everyone already said, nothing is based on the comics but art and names.

They did like any other live action adaptation to a graphic novel has done in the past two decades; They took it and they use their artistic freedom alter the story. I never expected it to be beat by beat. However, my point still stands. That is what was displayed in that scene. Because that's the peacemaker they presented to us in film.

I actually really like that Peacemaker's dad is an evil piece of shit with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Not just with the racism, but with the abuse of his own kids. It makes Peacemaker's attempts to somehow connect with his father and defend him against very valid criticisms from others that much sadder. It's also actually quite new and interesting, because often when you have male characters who have had abusive fathers, they're at the stage of life where the father is dead or gone, and the character in question is all "I promised myself I'll never end up an asshole like my father". Peacemaker is not yet there, and watching him try to parse the knolwedge that his dad is objectively evil and abusive is great emotional subplot.

Agreed. The dad wasn't some guy on the fence equivocating about his racism. He was a bad dude. Period. Thought the whole series was amazing, and not woke at all. I usually agree with Critical Drinker but i think he missed the subtext in this one. It was making fun of wokeness.
Nah he was the worst part of this show, with him being so 1 dimensional he felt like a Allegory then a actual character, I thought he was a bad character in general.
Both this and the suicide squad are the direction in which DC's second tier characters should go, they should be R rated, well cast, have some dark humor and have a solid story because this way they will all be extremely entertaining like these 2 were.
Plus it’d be a fun contrast to the borderline-broody, dark, and far more serious tones so far of the main heroes (Superman, Batman etc). Ntm an edgy, more adult-oriented alternative to the MCU, and I’m all for it
i would argue that aside from the obligatory "the message" monologue, adebayo is how you do a diverse character, focusing on their merits, flaws, and relationships to the characters on screen, not some invisible idea. if more diverse characters had an arc like adebayos, the actual minorities would feel truly represented as human and not caricatures to be propped and poised for money and likes.
There was a black lesbian couple in _Yellowjackets_ who were portrayed this way. They came across as believable human beings with their own faults and depth and nothing heavy-handed about their sexuality. Great show, can't wait for season 2.
@@JohnGardnerAlhadis Same with Arcane. A character's relationships and background should add depth, not remove it. Avery Brooks said it best talking about playing Ben Sisko on Deep Space 9. "Being black isn't a character. I can't use my skin tone to decide how Sisko will react to a situation. Having a teenaged son that I feel is growing apart. Being a widower who misses his late wife and trying to be a single dad and lead a crew at the same time. That is the character."
They also had a multiracial lesbian couple portrayed as relatable, normal human beings (who then have relationship problems that occur in all relationships regardless of gender/race/other specifics) way back on The Wire more than 20 years ago now. It can be done right, it just doesn’t happen all that often…
Watching Peacemaker left me in awe. James Gunn proved that you can be subversive, funny, a bit meta and put "the message" in without sounding obnoxious, out of touch and patronizing. He's self-aware enough to realize that he's going to annoy everyone, and he integrates the annoying bits into the personality of his characters.
I would like to point out that this show has one of the greatest title sequences of all time. Never skipped it, often rolled it back to watch it again.
A huge positive for me was how good the actors were for being relatively unknown figures. Like Freddie Stroma as Vigilante and Nhut Le as Judomaster were absolutely amazing. They really brought the characters to life.
@@MSgt_0699 Gunn is famous for taking very obscure characters and projecting them onto a new lense. Star lord was different before the guardians 2014, and yet the only people who complained are the 1% of the 1% that know him from the comics. The same is happening here.
While watching John Cena playing this role makes me think he is nothing like the The Rock johnson who plays the same type of role every movie he is in, John Cena and Dave Bautista can just act with different emotions, they are just killing it.
The Rock would never accept to have his ass kicked, cry because of remorse, not succeeding the entire mission alone,etc. He just couldn't and wouldn't play Cena's part. Jason Momoa accepted to appear in this to have his character being roasted and being too late to do anything, and I guess for free.If DJ was Aquaman he would demand 50 millions for a day and his character doing all the job on the final episode.
@@lrts1lrts181 My favorite part. I thought they were all shadowy stand-ins until the camera focused on Jason Momoa. Aquaman's interaction with Flash was hilarious. I may not think much of Momoa's politics, but he does seem like a genuinely fun guy who enjoys his work.
I absolutely loved this show. It did have some annoying "The message" parts. But it also poked fun of itself to give it balance. And John Cena has been catapulted as a competent actor directly because of this show IMO. For comparison, I like The Rock. But there is absolutely no way he could pull of a scenes like Cena did.
indeed. The Rock has no acting range at all. I was surprised with Cena when he killed his father, the times he was alone... i really felt what peacemaker was feeling. Kudos to Cena, he wont win an oscar anytime soon, but oh boy he sure can act, and play the piano, and dance, and tell jokes...
@@novatolock not true, The Rock is completely fine, and can be serious and joking. He is not the type of actor who will act in some stupid romance or any other 'realistic' too serious movie. Same as for example Reynolds, or as some 90s early 2000s action actors.

eagley deserves a best supporting actor award. and honestly, john cena didnt come off like a "former wrestler" in this show. he came off as an actor. doing a great job.

Aside from just a couple bad lines, I loved everything about this show. It was just as ridiculous as it needed to be. And Vigilante is one of the best characters ever on tv.
With almost 7 hours of run time, I can forgive a few things here and there. People gag on the dick of TNG star trek but only like 2 out 3 episodes a season are even worthwhile going back to rewatch
Gunn actually doesn't care about "the message". I think he did it only to suppress the controversy that almost finished his career. He is a real talent.
Im sorry but did u even watch this show? I don’t think I’ve seen anything more fraught with “the message” in my entire life. DC will become even more woke than marvel under Gunn’s reign just watch. Peacekeeper was a first step and its already more woke than anything marvel has produced.
Him bursting into tears wasn't going to far. The dude was having an emotional breakdown. It happens and it was super realistic. It was also desperately needed to humanize him. Peacemaker in Suicide Squad was a complete sociopath. For the show to work he needed a moment to show that there is more to him. And like I said, it happens. It was one of the most realistic moments in the entire show.
Can't wait for a chick crying scene on the bed to be hilarious. It might be a great way to explain that any chick is still mentally a teenager which fits perfectly.
I really like how they naturally continued his story while giving him a background story at the same time. This show is a gem. Makes me excited to see what the take on he penguins show will be even though they exist in separate universes.
Peacemaker ep 4 made me cry so hard. Making the guy who killed Rick Flagg as a person who admits he pushed people away but hasn’t recoved from his trauma was so good
I loved this series. The right mix of comedy and adult humour. John Cena is fresh as an actor and not affraid to have his face behind a mask like so many vain actors out there. The supporting cast was great but I think a little to much was focused on James Gunns wife...she wasn't the lead but billed as such 8n some things I saw. Perfectly timed series and I can't wait for more. "Activate human torpedo" is the last I'm gonna say on it.
I think it's a big plus that Cena plays a masked character. When I see his face, I still just think of his WWE run. It allows me to focus on the character rather than the man.

Just watched this series - holy crap this was so much better than it should have been. Don't listen to the Critical Drinker about the scene where Peacemaker breaks down into a blubbering wreck - that was done well, and was exactly consistent with his history and personality.
At times I think CD either doesn't watch things or he feels the need to put his own 'spin' on things. I watched this when it came out and, to me, it felt like a man who has reached his breaking point. He's suffering from PTSD, he's recovering from injuries, . He's just another murdering SOB who is hated by everyone. Raised by an evil hate filled person who never showed him any kindness. He's coming to the realisation that he is not the hero. Heck he even killed his personal hero Now it's all hitting him.
@@ptonpc Exactly, and it makes him endearing to us because him realizing he's not the hero and breaking down like that at the beginning of the series tells us that, as Harcourt says later, he's only 85% a dick, his heart is in the right place, and we start to want him to figure things out for the better. It's absolutely necessary for a TV series featuring a problematic "hero" that needs to grow along with the plot as we progress through.
My favorite scene when Peacemaker goes of on the old man for saying hes not a Superhero like Batman. How many murders is Batman indirectly responsible for because he doesn`t kill his villans but instead just throwing them in prison and then they inevitably escapes and kills more people. Laughed my ass of during that scene.
Can I also point out that James Gunn has an awesome playlist. The songs in this show were great. I’m just sad that Monster by Reckless Love isn’t available in the US iTunes Store
James Gunn is a very good writer and director to be honest, i havent seen everything he has made but what ive seen i liked. His humour is not for everybody i think, but knows how to write very likeable characters.
Why the fuck does everything he do, aside from Super, have aliens/alien invasion shit in it? At this point, it feels like that's all he can think of, and it made this series boring as fuuuck.
His "humor" cannot be called humor. It was thousands of tweets full of pedo content, often exchanged with his pedo friend whom he still is friends with.
IMO the “message” issue felt more like the show trying to avoid being labeled as “alt right” propaganda or some shit… cause you can clearly tell that the vast majority of its core themes tread on really touchy subjects for *some* people. Hell, peacemaker himself is CLEARLY a damn solid attempt to humanize their most extreme form of opposition, and it speaks louder than any other superficial “agenda” injected onto the series imo But all in all, I don’t really blame the writers… as long as they’re not so afraid to tackle this kind of stuff by the next season - that and at the very least deliver such messages in a more subtle/less redundant manner
What message are people talking about? Because the messages in this show aligned perfectly with the actual story and made people chose different directions.

Which, for the core message (the point about humanizing even the most "douchey" people) the show did it really well. Altho, for the occasional out-of-the-blue jabs at fake news, climate change denialists, and shit like that, not so much. And that's literally what I said above

@@jackwhittaker5133 the whole point is *how* you do it, not why nor where It’s undeniably more interesting, for example, to an anti-racism movie’s message to be delivered through sub-text and general characters’ actions vs. they simply making a random joe say: “racism bad” out loud, as if the audience was too stupid to get it by know… which, for the most part, like I said, Peacemaker delivers. Altho it gets kinda lazy at some occasional dialogues Not underestimating your audience’s intelligence and/or breaking the tone with shoe-horned out of character dialogues are preetty important factors that tend to make a work’s message to be a lot more digestible and feel less preachy. A perfect comparison would be Love Death & Robots s3’s “The 3 Robots” vs “Jibaro”, which imo perfect encapsulate both sides of the argument”… Jibaro delivers pretty much the same message as the other ep, but in a way so smooth that you don’t even realize you were being “educated”, and instead you can just enjoy it for what it is (with said “greed is bad” message likely becoming an afterthought once you start to analyze what happened on it)
are we not going to discuss then how absolutely fucking amazing and perfect the soundtrack to this season was? I mean I might be biased as an 80s glam fan, but holy hell every track felt SO meticulously curated it was insane! Loved this show:)
hot cherie by hardline has been a favourite song of mine since I was a kid, when I heard it in the show I freaked outttt so many good 80s hits my dad would play for me as a kid, and I play now.
on the expectations vs delivery scale, I think Peacemaker has been the biggest surprise in the last few years for me. absolutely loved it and was really impressed with Cena. his physical stature will hold him back in the long run for pulling an Adam Sandler type turn toward serious dramatic roles but he's certainly got the talent.
What I hate about most YT-channels, is the neverending spell they try to cast on you about subscribing, pressing all sorts of ding-dong-buttons and whatnot. The "piss off" message in the end of these videos immediately made me subscribe!
Got to admit, didn’t have high expectations going into peacemaker, but with how stale tv has been in the recent year thought I’d give it a try and was happily surprised. It’s a refreshing change from any shows I’ve watched recently and genuinely enjoyed it, would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a lighthearted gory super hero show that’s straight to the point and has no slow or dragged out episodes.
season 1 was a lot of fun. A bit too silly here and there but overall everything works. The Peacemaker-Vigilante duo is gold sometimes btw, I put off the show because John Cena was the MC... and ended up enjoying it a lot because of his performance. Dude is a legit actor.
As goofy as the show was, it actually had some of the most realistic characters and their development I've ever seen in any comic/superhero related media. Was pleasantly surprised by the whole project, and think John Cena is a fantastic actor
I like that the dad has no redeeming qualities or give reasons for his he got that way. Some people are just evil, and aren't going to change. It's common to humanize villains, which can be interesting. But it's good to have an pure evil character too.
I was very surprised. I really enjoyed it waaaaay more than I was expecting. So may great scenes like him comparing himself to Batman in a childish argument with his dad's 80 year old neighbour, the jokes over how WhatsApp automatically drops all images into your photo album (even the ones someone's girlfriend wouldn't want shared with the team), and the torture scene where he so bravely held out while Vigilante was being tortured. "Why don't you maintain your torturing s**t?" Vigilante cries in pain while Peacemaker knowing winks at him assuring him that we won't buckle under pressure. Such a brave hero. I've also started doing face workouts to get a jaw as square as John's.
The entrance theme song and dance basically tells us a little about how this show is gonna play out: playful, crazy humour, violent and just unexplainably awesome
The musical numbers were one of the worst things about this series, I had to fast forward through that time wasting fluff bullshit. Stop singing and dancing and just tell a fucking story for fucks sake.

Even if people just thought he was, Barry would never say oh you are and Aquaman would never say fuck off Barry but Gunn always writes his characters the only way he knows how, like himself, if that means acting wildly out of character then so be it.

I think peacemaker crying was a good touch, he’s emotionally stunted and thinks that what he does is righteous but doesn’t know why he’s hated for it. It’s like a kid drawing on the wall, thinking that the art is good but doesn’t understand why mom and dad are upset.
I had some mixed feelings after the finale, but I think your review really helped me parse out what was good and bad about the series. I found it hilarious for the most part and oddly sincere at times, never skipped the intro once, but yeah, the political parts were painful. I'm glad they made Adebayo likable and multi-layered as a person, and I liked the deep cut jokes about weird DC heroes and villains. It actually made the DCEU feel coherent.
Right. It's almost as if presenting a character as a person first, flaws and all and their sexuality after that, it's much easier to get behind and support. Maybe even like. But if all they are in their bio is "insert sexuality here" there's no substance to work with, and no reason to care about them.
@@Bananahammock681 yeah, and they were wise to not play into the relationship too much or make her wife part of the action, which I think would have been out of place. They allowed the relationship to exist, didn't define Adebayo by it, and made it part of her struggle and character arc instead with her having misgivings about keeping the nature of this work secret, which I think is very relatable.
Yea I was really into this show until the last episode which put in that whole political climate shit but after I got over that this is what Hollywood is now I actually really enjoyed like 90% of this show
@@fatnakedjimmyneutron I'm okay with a little bit of pandering, or genuinely trying to spread a message of "Do fucking better" over the current fad of "Jesus aren't we awful LAWL!" so long as the material surrounding it is of an above average quality. This show was top notch for me, so it gets a pass. Hell, Peacemaker made me hate the T-1000. Nothing I've seen it in has made me hate that thing since T-2!
Cena can act this show really blew me away, I really thought it was gonna suck but damn I was wrong. The scene when cena falls down from drinking and eagley and the butterfly are next to him hits hard I had to watch that ending twice
In fairness to Cena he's been acting for the last 20 years, people don't think much of wrestlers but some like Cena have went through different gimmicks and are pretty good actors, some however fall into the trap of playing the same character in every movie (the big muscular hero who saves the say and is full of one-liners type)
I too was blown away by this show and Cena's portrayal. It was like he was born for this part and that couldn't make me happier. I read an article a couple of weeks ago that the studio already green-lit a 2nd season. Gunn had said that he only intended to write one season and that was it but due to the show's overwhelmingly positive reception he's agreed to write a 2nd season. That said, Cena has already said he'd sign on as have many other cast members. I'm pretty excited to see what they do with this cuz dayumm... this was arguably one of this year's best shows.
John Cena carried this, but some of the rest of the cast, and Gunn's writing did a lot of heavy lifting too. I agree, it wasnt perfect, but was honestly worthy of a solid 8/10, which is fucking gold considering what DC produces.

I remember how skeptical I was when I started watching the show, not expecting much and then it became one of my favorite TV shows. It's also one of those rare shows that don't make me wanna skip the intro cause is so damn good. And the soundtrack kicks ass too

Peacemaker was indeed a pleasant surprise. John Cena's acting range impressed me a lot, and the whole cast of characters are well fleshed and developed, having their moments without feeling forced, with interactions that feel like actual human beings talking (although some jokes drag for a bit too long). I'm looking forward for Season 2.
A good series and much more interesting than i thought it would be. Anyone that knows Cena, knows he's essentially been acting for two decades now, so I'm not surprised he was up to it but it was surprising just how up to it he was.
I appreciate how Drinker doesn’t write off or praise media, regardless of what controversies or ideologies surround them, but gives credit where credit’s due. Like say what you will about Cena, but you can’t deny the dude can act. I honestly can’t see Peacemaker played by anyone else because he’s such a perfect choice.
This is why I watch him… he has a lot of views that I dont necessarily agree with, but he constantly challenges what I think and is definitely fairer than quiet a few of the more - to use a poor term - right wing UA-camrs
Harcourt is the perfect example of how to do a female character right without making her look weak and irrelevant or "STRONG AND FLAWLESS" like the MCU does these days. She's badass but also not flawless and has her vulnerabilities. And her character growth throughout the show was amazing.
When a small woman dominates men physically because men are pigs and white people bad is the exact blue print on making a terrible woke feminist character.
I dunno I feel like everyone was a bit too far down their character trope list. Harcourt had pretty aggro strong woman disorder, adebayo was the millenial insert, peacemaker was the toxicly masculine unwilling racist, etc. It was solid, but nothing in this show is a perfect example of anything.
@@lynchinjesus well there certainly are moments that are non believable. But I felt she was a welcome change from the characterless, uninteresting, Mary sue female characters we get in the mcu these days. Just my personal opinion though.
Honestly idk why the Marvel shows are held in such high regard.. the writing is atrocious - Loki was good - but Moon Knight just started and people are losing their minds writing a thesis on how deep it is.
Gunn did a great job of playing two extremes into each other and concluding with a message of unity. The wokeness more or less gets wiped out by the last episode and the ending basically shows how we all need to be towards each other. Our ideals and opinions do not define who we are. It's our actions and experiences that shape our lives. It's our actions that define who we really are as people. It's fine to have a bunch of grand, stupid ideas as long as you don't let them influence how you treat people. It really isn't that hard to respect one another when you realize there are 7 billion distinct personalities on this planet. Some may seem similar at times, but overall we aren't as simple to understand as the TV tries to imply and I think Gunn calling out the extremes on both ends and slapping them in the face helps to bring that perspective. "Maybe we should be able to decide for ourselves instead of our Butterfly overlords deciding for us."
I was very pleasantly surprised by this series. The entire cast is good. Plus you have Eagley. lol. And when he goes on about other superheroes is absolutely hilarious.
You really nailed this show perfectly. I avoided watching it just for the helmet alone, but even that has a backstory, and it's interesting as hell! While John Cena would never be considered in a movie like Schindler's List, in this format, he does excellent.
Peacemakers father was the best character in the whole show, I was so sad when he died. The obese black lesbian who I was hoping would get killed every episode, gets a small bump on the head at then end. Was hilarious to me to watch them try SO HARD to made chocolate chunky likable, and the father hated, when they did the exact opposite. When he says "chin chong chiggity chopsticks" to the lead cop, I died laughing. Was the best scene in the show.
lmao i remember that scene. I think he also called her Lucy Lu. That was the only good comedy in this show. The dollar tree discount deadpool wannabe wasnt it. They tried so hard to make the dad their KKK boogeyman tin foil hat bigot, but the guy ended up being entertaining as fk.

Personally I didn't like Adebayo calling out task force x. These guys are mass murderers who would've A: Stayed in prison forever continuously wasting food and money, or B: Been put to death.
That, and I also think that James Gunn needs to stop with the father-child drama. He's done it so often it's getting old and annoying. You can now make a bingo card with all the tropes that James Gunn uses for his films. Still, I did enjoyed the show. But I want to see him try new things.
They did feel forced but that's why it worked for me. I found it funny because the jokes don't land and they get told to "shut the fuck up" every single time because nobody finds them funny or appropriate for the situation. Similar to how in the Shadow Warrior reboot, Lo Wang is always telling really shitty jokes that don't land, but the punchline is that they don't land and just piss off everyone who is forced to work with him because he's so good at killing.
I had a blast with this show. My only gripes are the modern political buzz phrases occasionally thrown in. It takes me out of it immediately every single time.
i definitely had more fun watching Peacemaker than most the D+ stuff, i went into it unsure of what to expect and yea. was worth the time! very impressed with Cena's acting and the group worked together really well, spent a lot of time laughing across the episodes. Vigilante was super different from how i knew him, mainly from his Arrow counterpart, but I really liked him
I felt the seen where Peacemaker cried by himself actually sold me on him. He isn't looking for pity, but he self-reflects on his actions from a moral perspective and has regrets over choices he makes. He recognizes that the team hated him for the same reason he hated himself: killing Rick Flag. More so, it was important to show exactly what his mental state is going into the mission, how vulnerable he is to mere words now that he's lacking confidence in himself. It gave him personal stakes for the series, imo.
I enjoyed the show a lot more than I thought I would and I'm glad to hear it is getting another season. I'd have to say that Vigilante was my favorite character; he stole every scene he was in.
Thinking back the relationship between Peacemaker and his dad, his upbringing and the twisted worldview he developed because of his dad reminds me of the classic quote from Paarthurnax in Skyrim: "What is better - to be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?".
I think the thing that makes Adebayo a great character, in spite of her being the quintessential image for "The Message" is that she doesn't make it the core of her entire identity, essentially making her a mouthpiece without personality. In fact, it just kind of seems to be a side note, and even a way to convey her motivations. It's obvious that she cares more about her family than her identity, and the catalyst for her motivations are about her mother, and not about who she chooses to take to bed.
I agree. I think Hollywood is alienating people with these characters designed to deliver social commentary. They need to just make solid, likeable characters and have any message be incidental. Personally, I don't wanna be preached at, I wanna say, hey, that person who's nothing like me on the surface is totally relatable. Really bold would have been taking the token white supremacist character and making him relatable. I'm half white half Korean. I have grandparents on both sides that are racist AF but they're not bad people, just misguided. I hope we see bolder writing like this in the future!

Vigilante is one of the most accurate psychopaths ever portrayed. The prison scenes in ep. 4 are absolutely genius acting.
And I heard the actor was a replacement, the original guy backed out after filming a ton of stuff already so a lot had to be reshot. Apparently he's a part time actor, too? Does this stuff for fun. Not sure if that part is true but if so more respect to him, he absolutely fucking nailed it in this.

In this case, Gunn wanted Peacemaker to be an Action Dramedy, so he tooled Vigilante to be more comedic both in origins and personality. Who knows, we might get another vigilante that's more faithful to the comics

It was an unexpected delight. All of it. The dialogue the characters, the music. Every episode ended leaving you wanting more. And never skip the intro

i like to see it as how some actual people deal with certain things in their lives. like, some people act tough and pro killer to impress those around them because of an internal struggle
to connect with others, which might have been something they were never able to accomplish or even achieve early in their lives. but when you figure out that everyone hates you no matter what you do, it mentally tears you down and then the cold but painful truth starts to click when reality strikes back and the only way you can cope with it is by just letting out all of your bottled up feelings out in simple sadness and tears. the age old stereotype in which men aren't suppose to cry because it shows weakness is something that hits. makes you think that guys got problems too and not just women. it makes it feel real, human, and sometimes even relatable.
but those are just my thoughts on it

Cena is crazy talented, he was even fun in the WWE back in the day until the bland creative direction he was given turned him into Hulk Hogan 2.0. Sadly that's how most people remember him.
If you had to improvise segments on Raw for over a decade because the All Knowing Boss rips off the script of the show 30 minutes before it starts, you would be able to play in this kind of environment.

I always got the sense that he honestly could have cared less about being in Fast 9, and was hoping The Suicide Squad would be able to have been meaty enough for him to be invested in. And the comparison is night and day. Was real pleased to see he clearly liked the material more in the later and was investing his ability in it instead of 9, which I don't blame him.

James Gunn can make unknown characters likable and kinda relatable he is pretty good.
lets face it here, the semi serious over the top dance scene already made this a "WTF i gota watch this" vibe that you can't just turn away from. That intro gets me every time.
Maybe a decade ago when everything didn't have the message in it. Now I just assume it's garbage until proven otherwise. Not gonna watch this becuase the message is in it. I personally thought the scene that had him crying alone in bed was, well, pretty accurate for cats like Peacemaker himself. He's a strong advocate of an outward appearance of strength and intimidation however homie has EXTREME levels of PSTD that slides across multiple markers.

They need choose him because they need him yet they don't like him and would rather not be in his company. Alongside with him JUST recovering from a injury acquired while committing actions that led to the same conclusion and you get this; a large, deadly muthafucka who is having an emotional overload.
I think it’s a message about mens pain and having to put on a mask in front of others. How we can’t really show emotion without being ridiculed for it, so we sit alone with our emotions and let it fester, which makes it get worse over time

I disagree. The character was a true stoic in the novels and raised from a small child to be a warrior. In the books, his sidekick you call Vigilante had that scene. The scene where sidekick is tricked into a mission behind his back resulted in this small child getting killed. Over the 12 books, the sidekick has the arc to discover the value of life and put aside total indifference to violence. The loss of the child had the sidekick really upset. In the show plagiarized from the books, Peacemaker absorbs arcs from the sidekick. As everyone already said, nothing is based on the comics but art and names.

They did like any other live action adaptation to a graphic novel has done in the past two decades; They took it and they use their artistic freedom alter the story. I actually really like that Peacemaker's dad is an evil piece of shit with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Not just with the racism, but with the abuse of his own kids. It makes Peacemaker's attempts to somehow connect with his father and defend him against very valid criticisms from others that much sadder.
It's also actually quite new and interesting, because often when you have male characters who have had abusive fathers, they're at the stage of life where the father is dead or gone, and the character in question is all "I promised myself I'll never end up an asshole like my father". Peacemaker is not yet there, and watching him try to parse the knolwedge that his dad is objectively evil and abusive is great emotional subplot.

Both this and the suicide squad are the direction in which DC's second tier characters should go, they should be R rated, well cast, have some dark humor and have a solid story because this way they will all be extremely entertaining like these 2 were.

i would argue that aside from the obligatory "the message" monologue, adebayo is how you do a diverse character, focusing on their merits, flaws, and relationships to the characters on screen, not some invisible idea. if more diverse characters had an arc like adebayos, the actual minorities would feel truly represented as human and not caricatures to be propped and poised for money and likes.
There was a black lesbian couple in _Yellowjackets_ who were portrayed this way. They came across as believable human beings with their own faults and depth and nothing heavy-handed about their sexuality. Great show, can't wait for season 2.

"Being black isn't a character. I can't use my skin tone to decide how Sisko will react to a situation. Having a teenaged son that I feel is growing apart. Being a widower who misses his late wife and trying to be a single dad and lead a crew at the same time. That is the character."
Now if only they talked about Black racism, which is FAR more violent than the inverse, they'd have a real important show.
They also had a multiracial lesbian couple portrayed as relatable, normal human beings (who then have relationship problems that occur in all relationships regardless of gender/race/other specifics) way back on The Wire more than 20 years ago now. It can be done right, it just doesn’t happen all that often…
Watching Peacemaker left me in awe. James Gunn proved that you can be subversive, funny, a bit meta and put "the message" in without sounding obnoxious, out of touch and patronizing. He's self-aware enough to realize that he's going to annoy everyone, and he integrates the annoying bits into the personality of his characters.
What show did you watch? It was woke as fuck anytime Vigilante was on screen.

A huge positive for me was how good the actors were for being relatively unknown figures.

While watching John Cena playing this role makes me think he is nothing like the The Rock johnson who plays the same type of role every movie he is in, John Cena and Dave Bautista can just act with different emotions, they are just killing it.
The Rock would never accept to have his ass kicked, cry because of remorse, not succeeding the entire mission alone,etc. He just couldn't and wouldn't play Cena's part. Jason Momoa accepted to appear in this to have his character being roasted and being too late to do anything, and I guess for free.If DJ was Aquaman he would demand 50 millions for a day and his character doing all the job on the final episode.

Him bursting into tears wasn't going to far. The dude was having an emotional breakdown. It happens and it was super realistic. It was also desperately needed to humanize him. Peacemaker in Suicide Squad was a complete sociopath. For the show to work he needed a moment to show that there is more to him. And like I said, it happens. It was one of the most realistic moments in the entire show.
Also he wasn't bursting into tears, he was doing face exercise. It is very important to do if you want to look like John Cena in your 40s.

I really like how they naturally continued his story while giving him a background story at the same time. This show is a gem. Makes me excited to see what the take on he penguins show will be even though they exist in separate universes.
Peacemaker ep 4 made me cry so hard. Making the guy who killed Rick Flagg as a person who admits he pushed people away but hasn’t recoved from his trauma was so good
I loved this series. The right mix of comedy and adult humour. John Cena is fresh as an actor and not affraid to have his face behind a mask like so many vain actors out there. The supporting cast was great but I think a little to much was focused on James Gunns wife...she wasn't the lead but billed as such 8n some things I saw. Perfectly timed series and I can't wait for more. "Activate human torpedo" is the last I'm gonna say on it.

Just watched this series - holy crap this was so much better than it should have been. Don't listen to the Critical Drinker about the scene where Peacemaker breaks down into a blubbering wreck - that was done well, and was exactly consistent with his history and personality.
At times I think CD either doesn't watch things or he feels the need to put his own 'spin' on things. I watched this when it came out and, to me, it felt like a man who has reached his breaking point. He's suffering from PTSD, he's recovering from injuries, . He's just another murdering SOB who is hated by everyone. Raised by an evil hate filled person who never showed him any kindness. He's coming to the realisation that he is not the hero. Heck he even killed his personal hero Now it's all hitting him.
@@ptonpc Exactly, and it makes him endearing to us because him realizing he's not the hero and breaking down like that at the beginning of the series tells us that, as Harcourt says later, he's only 85% a dick, his heart is in the right place, and we start to want him to figure things out for the better. It's absolutely necessary for a TV series featuring a problematic "hero" that needs to grow along with the plot as we progress through.
My favorite scene when Peacemaker goes of on the old man for saying hes not a Superhero like Batman. How many murders is Batman indirectly responsible for because he doesn`t kill his villans but instead just throwing them in prison and then they inevitably escapes and kills more people. Laughed my ass of during that scene.

His "humor" cannot be called humor. It was thousands of tweets full of pedo content, often exchanged with his pedo friend whom he still is friends with.
IMO the “message” issue felt more like the show trying to avoid being labeled as “alt right” propaganda or some shit… cause you can clearly tell that the vast majority of its core themes tread on really touchy subjects for *some* people. Hell, peacemaker himself is CLEARLY a damn solid attempt to humanize their most extreme form of opposition, and it speaks louder than any other superficial “agenda” injected onto the series imo
But all in all, I don’t really blame the writers… as long as they’re not so afraid to tackle this kind of stuff by the next season - that and at the very least deliver such messages in a more subtle/less redundant manner

It’s undeniably more interesting, for example, to an anti-racism movie’s message to be delivered through sub-text and general characters’ actions vs. they simply making a random joe say: “racism bad” out loud, as if the audience was too stupid to get it by know… which, for the most part, like I said, Peacemaker delivers. Altho it gets kinda lazy at some occasional dialogues
Not underestimating your audience’s intelligence and/or breaking the tone with shoe-horned out of character dialogues are preetty important factors that tend to make a work’s message to be a lot more digestible and feel less preachy. A perfect comparison would be Love Death & Robots s3’s “The 3 Robots” vs “Jibaro”, which imo perfect encapsulate both sides of the argument”… Jibaro delivers pretty much the same message as the other ep, but in a way so smooth that you don’t even realize you were being “educated”, and instead you can just enjoy it for what it is (with said “greed is bad” message likely becoming an afterthought once you start to analyze what happened on it)
are we not going to discuss then how absolutely fucking amazing and perfect the soundtrack to this season was? I mean I might be biased as an 80s glam fan, but holy hell every track felt SO meticulously curated it was insane! Loved this show:)

on the expectations vs delivery scale, I think Peacemaker has been the biggest surprise in the last few years for me. absolutely loved it and was really impressed with Cena. his physical stature will hold him back in the long run for pulling an Adam Sandler type turn toward serious dramatic roles but he's certainly got the talent.
Many things can be better than expected, when you begin with zero expectation to begin with.
What I hate about most YT-channels, is the neverending spell they try to cast on you about subscribing, pressing all sorts of ding-dong-buttons and whatnot. The "piss off" message in the end of these videos immediately made me subscribe!
Got to admit, didn’t have high expectations going into peacemaker, but with how stale tv has been in the recent year thought I’d give it a try and was happily surprised. It’s a refreshing change from any shows I’ve watched recently and genuinely enjoyed it, would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a lighthearted gory super hero show that’s straight to the point and has no slow or dragged out episodes.

I like that the dad has no redeeming qualities or give reasons for his he got that way. Some people are just evil, and aren't going to change. It's common to humanize villains, which can be interesting. But it's good to have an pure evil character too.
I was very surprised. I really enjoyed it waaaaay more than I was expecting. So may great scenes like him comparing himself to Batman in a childish argument with his dad's 80 year old neighbour, the jokes over how WhatsApp automatically drops all images into your photo album (even the ones someone's girlfriend wouldn't want shared with the team), and the torture scene where he so bravely held out while Vigilante was being tortured. "Why don't you maintain your torturing s**t?" Vigilante cries in pain while Peacemaker knowing winks at him assuring him that we won't buckle under pressure. Such a brave hero.
I've also started doing face workouts to get a jaw as square as John's.
The entrance theme song and dance basically tells us a little about how this show is gonna play out: playful, crazy humour, violent and just unexplainably awesome

I had some mixed feelings after the finale, but I think your review really helped me parse out what was good and bad about the series. I found it hilarious for the most part and oddly sincere at times, never skipped the intro once, but yeah, the political parts were painful. I'm glad they made Adebayo likable and multi-layered as a person, and I liked the deep cut jokes about weird DC heroes and villains. It actually made the DCEU feel coherent.
Right. It's almost as if presenting a character as a person first, flaws and all and their sexuality after that, it's much easier to get behind and support. Maybe even like. But if all they are in their bio is "insert sexuality here" there's no substance to work with, and no reason to care about them.

Cena can act this show really blew me away, I really thought it was gonna suck but damn I was wrong. The scene when cena falls down from drinking and eagley and the butterfly are next to him hits hard I had to watch that ending twice
In fairness to Cena he's been acting for the last 20 years, people don't think much of wrestlers but some like Cena have went through different gimmicks and are pretty good actors, some however fall into the trap of playing the same character in every movie (the big muscular hero who saves the say and is full of one-liners type)
as a wrestling fan Cena's acting ability was already visible in the WWE. i swear the next WWE breakout wrestler to actor will be Drew Mcintyre
I too was blown away by this show and Cena's portrayal. It was like he was born for this part and that couldn't make me happier. I read an article a couple of weeks ago that the studio already green-lit a 2nd season. Gunn had said that he only intended to write one season and that was it but due to the show's overwhelmingly positive reception he's agreed to write a 2nd season. That said, Cena has already said he'd sign on as have many other cast members.
I'm pretty excited to see what they do with this cuz dayumm... this was arguably one of this year's best shows.
John Cena carried this, but some of the rest of the cast, and Gunn's writing did a lot of heavy lifting too.

I was one of the stunt guys in this show. It was an absolute blast...the cast was awesome and I'm stoaked how it turned out!
I remember how skeptical I was when I started watching the show, not expecting much and then it became one of my favorite TV shows. It's also one of those rare shows that don't make me wanna skip the intro cause is so damn good. And the soundtrack kicks ass too

Peacemaker was indeed a pleasant surprise. John Cena's acting range impressed me a lot, and the whole cast of characters are well fleshed and developed, having their moments without feeling forced, with interactions that feel like actual human beings talking (although some jokes drag for a bit too long). I'm looking forward for Season 2.
I tend to find John Cena unlikeable but he really shines in this show.

Anyone that knows Cena, knows he's essentially been acting for two decades now, so I'm not surprised he was up to it but it was surprising just how up to it he was.
Another thing I loved about the show was that it went all-in on having all the songs in the show be glam rock songs, both classic and modern.
This show was a masterpiece, 10 out of 10. I bench-watch the whole show yesterday. I hope season two gets made.
I appreciate how Drinker doesn’t write off or praise media, regardless of what controversies or ideologies surround them, but gives credit where credit’s due. Harcourt is the perfect example of how to do a female character right without making her look weak and irrelevant or "STRONG AND FLAWLESS" like the MCU does these days. She's badass but also not flawless and has her vulnerabilities. And her character growth throughout the show was amazing.

Gunn did a great job of playing two extremes into each other and concluding with a message of unity. The wokeness more or less gets wiped out by the last episode and the ending basically shows how we all need to be towards each other. Our ideals and opinions do not define who we are. It's our actions and experiences that shape our lives. It's our actions that define who we really are as people. It's fine to have a bunch of grand, stupid ideas as long as you don't let them influence how you treat people. It really isn't that hard to respect one another when you realize there are 7 billion distinct personalities on this planet. Some may seem similar at times, but overall we aren't as simple to understand as the TV tries to imply and I think Gunn calling out the extremes on both ends and slapping them in the face helps to bring that perspective. "Maybe we should be able to decide for ourselves instead of our Butterfly overlords deciding for us."

You really nailed this show perfectly. I avoided watching it just for the helmet alone, but even that has a backstory, and it's interesting as hell! While John Cena would never be considered in a movie like Schindler's List, in this format, he does excellent.
Peacemakers father was the best character in the whole show, I was so sad when he died. The obese black lesbian who I was hoping would get killed every episode, gets a small bump on the head at then end. Was hilarious to me to watch them try SO HARD to made chocolate chunky likable, and the father hated, when they did the exact opposite. When he says "chin chong chiggity chopsticks" to the lead cop, I died laughing. Was the best scene in the show.

They did feel forced but that's why it worked for me. I found it funny because the jokes don't land and they get told to "shut the fuck up" every single time because nobody finds them funny or appropriate for the situation. Similar to how in the Shadow Warrior reboot, Lo Wang is always telling really shitty jokes that don't land, but the punchline is that they don't land and just piss off everyone who is forced to work with him because he's so good at killing.
I had a blast with this show. My only gripes are the modern political buzz phrases occasionally thrown in. It takes me out of it immediately every single time.

Vigilante was super different from how i knew him, mainly from his Arrow counterpart, but I really liked him
I felt the seen where Peacemaker cried by himself actually sold me on him. He isn't looking for pity, but he self-reflects on his actions from a moral perspective and has regrets over choices he makes. He recognizes that the team hated him for the same reason he hated himself: killing Rick Flag. More so, it was important to show exactly what his mental state is going into the mission, how vulnerable he is to mere words now that he's lacking confidence in himself. It gave him personal stakes for the series, imo.
Definitely was a good show, I’m glad that the “message” was somewhat subtle and didn’t overshadow the show entirely! Can’t wait for season 2.

I enjoyed the show a lot more than I thought I would and I'm glad to hear it is getting another season. I'd have to say that Vigilante was my favorite character; he stole every scene he was in.

Thinking back the relationship between Peacemaker and his dad, his upbringing and the twisted worldview he developed because of his dad reminds me of the classic quote from Paarthurnax in Skyrim: "What is better - to be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?".
The dance intro to “Do you wanna taste it,” is unironically the best part of the show. Didn’t skip it once, laughed my ass off every time.

I think the thing that makes Adebayo a great character, in spite of her being the quintessential image for "The Message" is that she doesn't make it the core of her entire identity, essentially making her a mouthpiece without personality. In fact, it just kind of seems to be a side note, and even a way to convey her motivations. It's obvious that she cares more about her family than her identity, and the catalyst for her motivations are about her mother, and not about who she chooses to take to bed.
I agree. I think Hollywood is alienating people with these characters designed to deliver social commentary. They need to just make solid, likeable characters and have any message be incidental. Personally, I don't wanna be preached at, I wanna say, hey, that person who's nothing like me on the surface is totally relatable. Really bold would have been taking the token white supremacist character and making him relatable. I'm half white half Korean. I have grandparents on both sides that are racist AF but they're not bad people, just misguided. I hope we see bolder writing like this in the future!

Especially when you're just trying to get through a movie without any reminders of the fact that white people fucked over entire generations and indeed continents of marginilized identities.
