Too be fair, Steven is carrying the show with his bubbly personality and his naivity. And his transformation to Mr Knight is hillarious! Even Marc roasted him by saying: "Why do we look like a psycho Colonel Sanders?" And he stupidly threw the gun in episode One when he got chased by the cult on ice cream truck.
I also glad that Layla doesn't have much screen times and most of the time Marc and Steven overshadowed her along with Khonsu and Fabio Ethan Hawke (I know his name is Arthur Harrow but he reminds me of Fabio with that wig). Even in Episode 5, she's clearly absent and she completely gone in the finale after fighting Fabio Ethan Hawke.

Drinker, I look forward to listening to your analyses, but if I'm honest, you're a tad bit off your game. It sounds like you skimmed the show because the usual comments I tend to agree with you on, isn't true for this series... Both characters are useful. The female character isn't all strong and even in her fight scenes she needs help. Egyptian gods are different to the created marvel ones, ie. Not omnipotent, yes, the cgi is lacking and theres a lot of green screen. But it really felt like you flicked through these eps. Your reviews I usually find spot on, this is the first time I'm strongly disagreeing. But then again we are allowed our opinions. Even if they don't make us popular. Well, that's all for now. Even at the end, in ancient Egyptian mythology, when your heart was weighed for your sins you could kinda trick it to not condemn you with spells from the Book of the dead. Great gritty action, complex characters, terrifying villains, human drama intertwined in a tense story with actual stakes. A blind guy with a black scarf fighting a fat guy in a white tuxedo in some dark alley was more exciting than Egyptian gods battling over the fate of the world.

On the one hand, they've been spending a lot of time in the show trying to build the mental illness aspect of the character as a big deal and a vital part of his development, but then they end it with questioning whether or not any of that developing accomplished anything. I think the instinct to go big picture whenever the subject of heroes with even a remote connection to mythical deities and turn in into big spectacle also hurts this show because Moon Knight is not that kind of character. He works best as a street level character struggling with his eternal connection to Khonshu, and throwing everything else in to make it fit a mold only hurts the result.
Not the worst thing they've done, but it feel a lot more cookie cutter than a character this nuanced should be. We're not likely to ever see anything as unique and specific as what Netflix did with shows like Daredevil and Luke Cage, because anything they would do with those characters here would just result in the same homogenous fit everything seems to fall into.

One of the main problems with these phase 4 shows is that they set up all kinds of things, just to abandon them almost immediately and pretend they where never even set up. The concept of Stephen/Marc/Moon Knight has huge potential, but ultimately it doesn't matter at all, because the show called Moon Knight is all about setting up Layla as "The Egyptian Superhero."
With phase 4 Disney/Marvel are playing the same trick over and over again: use superhero X to introduce Strong Female Character who turns out to be the replacement of superhero X.

We need to add in that his love interest has powers that she never earns or struggles to control. We have to add in a massive Kaiju battle, that takes everything out of the story.
We watch Mark and Steven struggle to control the Moon Knight and find balance with each other for 5 to 6 episodes basically. But then his girlfriend can just temporarily make a deal to get generic Falcon wings and say, “Yes, I am a female Egyptian superhero” (insert Event Horizon screaming)

    • @korawitbuttramee618
      @korawitbuttramee618 2 роки тому +47

I disagree. Steven's whole point is about he is totally free from misery and abuse Marc suffered in childhood. I believe that Jake was created by Marc when he reached the breaking point, that he had enough and decided to hit life back. His violence stemmed from the fact that his life was so awful it seemed unfair, so he seeks justice, or rather, vengeance, to vent his anger and feel better about himself. Thus, Jake was born and his twisted sense of justice is what made him the perfect avatar for Khonshu.
I like to think that deep down Marc wanted a parental figure who could guide him, support him, and tells him he is awesome. As Jake Lockley, he found all of that in Khonshu who sic him on every bad guy and probably pats him in the back for doing it.

@@korawitbuttramee618 So, kind of like what the fake Harrow said about the idea of Marc being created by Steven? I like the idea, but that leaves a plot-hole. If Steven was created by Marc to escape from the abuse, then why did Steven not remember their mom beating them? Did Marc switch back in right after their mom busted in? Why switch to Steven to escape only to be thrown right back into it to protect him? We see that Marc remembers this beating, but what happened at other points? Because, sadly, I doubt that was the only time it happened.
The theory presented by the original comment solves a couple of things. We see Steven has a strong streak of denial when there is something negative in his life, so if he was fronting when they were abused he probably repressed it. That would explain why he was still successful as a protector. Jake's creation probably happened in a similar manner to that and Steven's own creation, during a traumatic memory that was repressed or strictly avoided. Marc was begging Steven not to go into that memory, not just for Steven's sake, but because it forced Marc to relive that trauma. Steven might remember creating Jake, but because the memory is traumatic he avoids it like Marc avoids his. Only this time with more denial, and benefitted by Jake seemingly not wanting to communicate with them.
It would also explain why Marc doesn't know about Jake as Marc didn't create him and Steven refuses to look at that memory.
This is probably way too long, but I was passionate about it lol. Thank you for your time if you read this all!

      @CineSoar 2 роки тому +18

@@kcpugh5601 my interpretation: Marc was the original personality. For a time, he took his mother's abuse, eventually he created Steven (the infantilized, naïve, mother's-boy, he imagined his mother wished he was) as a sort of buffer. When the violence stopped, Steven would come to the surface, having no memory of the abuse, Marc could rest, until the trauma had faded enough for him to return. As the violence became too much for Marc to bear, Jake was born out of the snarling revenge fantasy, which Marc experienced as a sort of blackout, until he eventually took the 'hand-off' from Steven later.
One thing that is very odd to me, is how the credit scene actually changes the audience's perception of the events of the show. It isn't clear from the video whether Drinker has even seen it. But, anyone who missed it thinks that Ammit/Harrow is still alive. That's unlike any credit scene in the MCU, as far as I know.
Also an open question is, why was Harrow in what physically appeared to be the same asylum? If he was alive, and this was a real asylum, does that mean Steven/Marc/Jake were committed there, at some point? Otherwise, where did they get the mental imagery, to project it onto their experience of the afterlife?

They didn't even attempt to give us one whole episode of doubt. Since the episode prior already revealed it's hand that the Asylum isn't real.

Only for Season 2 to open with him in the insane asylum. Where most every prominent character from Season 1 gets repurposed as staff or inmates.

They had a rushed romantic subplot with Steven and Layla, they had a rushed introducing Khonshu and the Gods (they could have introduced it in the second season instead and focused more on Mark instead of cataclysmic titan battles or petty rivalries among gods) and they rushed the Asylum plot point.

I agree with everything except one thing: While it might seem that Steven should be a damaged psychopath for taking all the abuse from his mother, this is explained in the post-credit scene of the last episode by the existence of Jake Lockley, who is a third personality and CLEARLY the psychopath that has been killing people during Steven and Marc's black outs.

Find myself disagreeing with Drinker for the first time here. Definitely the show had some problems and I felt they didn't push the boundaries as much as they could but it wasn't all that terrible for me, a lot better than most of what Disney plus puts out. Marc was very much the muscle and Steven the brains. Steven was the one who was able to piece together certain clues like the star navigation thing they did. So I disagree that he was useless.
Also Layla wasn't all that generic for me. She was capable because of her history in the business, I believe, but was also vulnerable and emotional in some moments without making it all about her feelings. She wasn't arrogant And I distinctly remember her being rescued by the Moon Knight before and after she got her powers so there was mutual saving. I never got the impression that she was a better avatar than Marc, even Konshou through out the idea of her replacing him. And she only taught him the spell because one of the dying gods taught her first not because she's just better

@@adamoshea2793 I think that is fair towards Disney because they didn’t initially believe in tgis project or any of the Marvel Franchises going forward with Iron Man but when they started making money they did what any billion dollar corporation would do and threw money at them so that they coyld make more projects like this, the problem comes from when they have too much influence over the projects and take out any meaningful things like plot points, interesting characterizations, and morals. Moon Knight actually has become my favorite Marvel property in a long while cause it doesn’t connect to anything else it’s just pure fun from the ground up and that’s how superhero movies used to be. It’s not as good as shows like “Heroes” or “Daredevil”, but it comes pretty close to doing it’s own thing despite how it plays into the “MCU” tropes. And a lot of people like the MCU for a reason, and that is that it usually is good at entertaining folks, whereas most other Disney projects fail in that regard these days with almost everything being made to fit “political agendas” and appease other countries strict rules more than the one where the film is made. In simpler terms if they want to be diverse they’ll just last minute add a female or “any race other than white” character to a movie or project, and if other countries have a problem they’ll remove that character or all promotional material containing anything “controversial”.

I agree that it wasn’t as bad at the Drinker made it out to be for the same reasons u listed above. I think the show wasn’t really good, but it could have been worse. I know fight scenes definitely needed a reworking. Moon Knight fights were way too fast; anything brutal he did was watered down, and there was barely any impact for any of it (in episode 3, the guy broke an arm, a kneecap, and a neck, but there was so little impact to those shots that the untrained eye could have never noticed them). Mr. Knight could get away with this in episode 6 because his fighting style is more non-lethal, so he could move faster without any disconnect in the fight scenes, but Moon Knight combat wasn’t very fitting of the pace of the fight at all. It was too fast, and I hated it. Additionally, I feel that the Drinker was right with Ammit’s beliefs vs Khonshu’s. There was no reasoning or counter reasoning for any of it. And in the end, I will concede that the wrong person convinced Marc not to kill. Layla killed a bunch of mfs. Why was she the one who convinced Marc not to kill Harrow? Steven should have done that, not Layla. Steven is the non-lethal one

I actually like Moon Knight the most out of all the new Marvel shows. They did, of course, manage to fuck it up a bit in the final episode, as is the tradition.
I personally don't see most of the things you mention as negatives. Without knowing anything about the comics prior to watching the show, I believed Steven's personality to be purposefully exagerrated to highlight the differences to Marc's. They might have overdone it, I suppose, but the idea of one personality being useless was fun to me. His usefulness also improved as the show progressed. As far as Layla goes, she was OK and I liked how different her interactions were with Marc and Steven. They seem to make a good team, rather than her being the allpowerful female stereotype of recent years. She gets to be a superhero for a bit, that didn't bother me too much. That one line was very cringey, though. By the way, I'm pretty sure Steven is the personality that believes his mother has always been kind and is still alive. He exists so that a part of Marc can have a normal life.

If there's one thing the comic was brilliant at above all else, was to reflect the characters internal monologue and perspectives to the reader. If the character was deceived, so we're we. If the character felt something about a situation, that was delivered to the reader with the clarity of an internal monologue with your own mind. It also depicted a relationship between God & servant really well, which also falls massively short in this show.

It really is so that when Children develope a split personality due to parental abuse or trauma, those personalities often are devote or childish, because the mind thinks that someone that isn't violent at all is less likely to receive further abuse.

This is one of the first times I’ve actually disagreed with the drinker so thoroughly. The finale definitely sucked, and Layla being yet another female superhero who’s thrown in for representation was also very frustrating. However the show throws in so much good stuff that overall I thought it was a fantastic show.
First of all out of all the female characters in the MCU, I would argue that Layla was actually decently well written. While her turning into a super hero at the end for no reason was kinda stupid, she’s much more empathetic and rounded than other female characters. She really cares about Mark and wants to help him and grow their relationship instead of just getting a job done with him. I was also ok with the fact that moon knight didn’t get much screen time. What separated moon knight from other marvel shows was its emphasis of the characters and their emotions. The show was almost like a drama about Steven and mark, with a subplot about the end of the world.
I also don’t think that Steven was a particularly poorly written character. People with DID are often really weird, and also very deserving of empathy, which was kind of the whole point of Steven. Steven is literally born from trauma, a fabrication of his own brain, so being a fidgety, wimpy character is perfectly understandable. Steven wasn’t supposed to be a tougher version of mark, he was supposed to be the happy part of mark. Instead of making Steven the trauma holder, marks brain made Steven the host, and mark the trauma holder. Mark remembers all of the abuse and trauma of his childhood, while Steven, who’s literal purpose is to be normal enough to survive in daily life, is literally marks opposite. Innocent, odd, carefree, and kind. Steven and his purpose is a perfectly realistic alter irl, and that’s what makes the show so magical. DID is an incredibly difficult disorder that can be life-crippling and super disheartening. Compared to the rest of the internet, Moon Knight did a decent job portraying the struggles of a person with DID. While most other marvel shows are focused on action, feminism, and representation, moon knight focused solely on the characters and their emotions, making it more relatable and understandable than your average action movie. Overall, while it wasn’t perfect, I was happy with the production of moon knight.

I agree, this was one of my favorite Disney+ shows yet. Steven was loads of fun, Marc was badass, Jake was scary badass! Layla was well written and entertaining. The representation of DID was better than anything ever done before, except one glaring mistake. If Steven's purpose was to be the "happy one", then he should have appeared *after* the abuse in order to not remember it. Jake should have been the one to appear when the mother entered the room. Jake should hold the trauma, Steven should be blissfully unaware and Marc is man in the middle trying to hold the balance.
I don't know what Drinker wanted out a female character in this show, or any show or film for that matter. Does he think "The only good woman is a silent woman"? Maybe make a woman character that does nothing but sit at the man's feet and agree with everything he says? Sounds like a boring character.

Also Fun Fact: Marc Spector didn't suffer from child abuse in any of the comics.
In fact the opposite, Marc Spector actually beat and abused his Dad in the comics for being pathetic loser and embarrassment.
In the bulk of Moon Knight comics, Marc Spector's mental health issues come from the guilt and regret of killing innocent people for fun/money in his mercenary past.
The whole point of Moon Knight was that he was a terrible person who was betrayed by Bushman (an even worse person), dies, and gets reborn into a superhero to redeem his past.
They do reference this in Episode 5 of the Moon Knight series, by having Arthur Harrow mention that "Maybe Marc's Steven Grant persona was created as a way to hide from the guilt of murdering innocent people in his mercenary past and start a new life from scratch".
(Which is exactly how it happened in the comics, until a 2018 comic retcon that said Marc's mental health issues come from witnessing a family friend murder a kid in his basement).

When she becomes an Avatar for Taweret she was basically on par with Marc/Steven/Moon Knight. And she was much weaker than the third personality of Marc/Steven.
She knew how to perform the ritual, cuz Taweret, the goddess herself told her how to.

The result is exactly the opposite of what viewers want. We don’t care if a character is similar to what we are. I wouldn't call Layla a "Strong Female Character", unlike so many others that I can name. That scene where she tries to deal with the priests at Ammit's Tomb shows her struggling to get away from them, to the point that she had to trick the priest to fall into the hole, and nearly falling down herself in the process. She even cried afterwards, presumably from the stress of dealing with them in the first place. She even broke down and cried when her husband got shot by Ethan's character (Arthur Harrow) which gave her the motivation to go after his cult herself.
The Scarlet Scrab thing should be hopefully temporary, and even so, she didn't do as much in the fight as Marc did. Then again, neither of them, not even Khonshu and Ammit did a lot in the fighting, even Marc and Layla got cornered by Harrow and his men, before Jake comes out and beats the crap out of them
In short, I think that for a main female character, Layla is a bit more balanced, and in some scenes, well written. At the very least, she wasn't as unbearable as say, Sylvie, Carol, Karli, Wanda(In WandaVision and MoM) and others that I forgot. Of course, I do not expect everyone here to share the same views, so it's fine, I just think Layla is a much better female character than most in the recent Phase 4 of the MCU.

Yeah I have to agree and I commented something similar on his most recent video. I think he's a expecting too much to see "Strong Female Character" to realize where the differences are. I mean here, she's his wife and just wants to know what the hell is going on because Mark left her in the dark. She's capable but not overpowered and most of the time she was saving it was saving Steven who's genuinely the one who's so weak. It's not like she really saved Mark. Also worth noting... she never really won legitimately or if she did was really for the reason that she's a main character. Like it was evident that Ethan Hawk was basically toying with them the entire time and it's evidenced when he just pulled a gun and shot Mark outright after he was sufficiently standing in his way. Two in the chest and that's it. And she was completely helpless to it too. She couldn't do shit. And her superpower part was explicitly temporary with her deal as per the agreement: "Just for this" and when she did tell Mark how to do that spell she was told how via that goddess so it's not like something SHE knew. She was even successfully tempted by Ethan Hawk so realistically she "lost" that battle of wills with him. So I kind of don't agree with his take here really.

Why can't we ignore these medieval concepts of past in the real world & in the imaginary world of cinema where everything that exists is in our control we forget ethinicites at all. Why can't we have a protagonist/superhero/hero just be *A HERO* . I never saw falcon as a blackmale superhero, I saw falcon as .....FALCON. I never saw captain america a white male american. I saw captain america as CAPTAIN AMERICA the first avenger.....despite the name being captain america. I like listening to his takes. But to he blunt, I dont quite agree with his analysis on this one.
Some of the questions he brings up are answered.
For example the girl knowing how the do the spell at the end, is because shes an Avatar.
Same with how Mark does what he does because of his connection to Kanshu she has the abilities of the goddess shes bound to.
Of course Marc wouldn't know how to do a spell since his power aligns more with brute strength then spell casting.
Also, I dont see the argument for her not getting saved. The entire point of her getting powers was so she could help get Moonknight back to beat the goddess they realised.
Her entire role in the show was being a supporting character. So while it's fine to say that she assists him, it's for the goal of him actually coming back to finish the fight.
Calling her a strong character doesn't seem to match in this regard. Especially since so much of her character revolves around helping both Marc and Steven.
I can agree that debate amongst the gods isn't really explored as well as it could be.

Aside from three fundamental criticisms I actually largerly disagree with the drinker here. The idea of Marc being in an Asylum was introduced too late to be as impactful as it could have been and would have required more buildup, Layla becoming a superhero herself was a gratuitous move that took attention away from where it should have been, and the big, Godzilla-esque fight at the end is kinda antithetical to how this character is usually portrayed.
Beyond that, though, I almost completely disagree with his review here. Layla is competent and helpful, yes, but she also has to fall back on or get saved by Marc/Steve just as often, Steven's expertise with Egyptian lore/culture is useful throughout and he becomes a more confident and capable fighter as the show continues, and the second episode actually dedicates a good chunk of it's runtime to exploring and arguing Harrow's philosophy- both establishing a relatable reason for the protagonist to oppose it while also properly showing how Harrow can be so dedicated to his philosophy that he doesn't mind being judged himself. I never once felt the protagonist's misery was played for laughs or meant to make him a "clown" either. And while sequel hooks and spinoff bait are indeed typical Marvel fare, I feel this show still managed to tell a very self- contained story arc about a man coming to terms with himself.
Couple that with the amazing performances and I honestly feel it was a very solid show, even better than most of the Netflix ones.

Like, i don't know why these writers think a majority of women want this. i think there's a middle ground between being a completely annoying maiden like Willie in Temple of Doom, and being this butch, masculine hero who saves the man. I don't want to save the man. I don't want a man who's weaker and less competent that me. That's not attractive. Women like to be rescued by a guy, and there's nothing wrong with that. On an evolutionary level, it's hot. it's hot being fought for. I don't want to carry the guy away she-hulk style. I want the big masculine man to carry me away. they really did Moon Knight dirty with this ending and I just hate it. They didn't have to turn Layla into a superhero for her to be a strong female character. The director of the show criticized Patty Jenkins for misrepresenting Egypt in WW84. He was so focused on representing his country that he failed to tell a good story. A complex character like Moon Knight deserves its own show like the Daredevil which would've helped explore a lot about the character. These 6 episodes didn't do the character and his story any justice at all. I was so disappointed by this.

To be fair, in most cultures gods weren't really omnipotent and all-seeing, they were often just like really powerful humans with a few superpowers, and they were even graded and ranked, from the most powerful to the ones who were just like tree spirits. Or they only had power in their own realms, whether that was the underworld, or a village. A local god might be all powerful, but only in his strict geographical region, outside of that someone like Zeus outranked him immensely. That's how you got all these unknown minor gods, but why the locals still kept the name alive and focused on praying and sacrificing to him even though they knew Zeus or whoever was the King of the Gods. It was the Hebrews who mostly introduced the idea that God was One and all powerful, all aware, that nothing could be hidden from Him and He controlled all. Before that people routinely tricked and fooled gods.

But that “Are you an Egyptian super hero?” Scene was forced af. The worst thing you can possible do for representation in media is call attention to it within the media. It would literally be like if that scene where marcs having that emotional breakdown on the street and someone walks up to him and ask “Are you Jewish?”

@@sharif47 Because "dealing" with the situation can be interpreted differently since it is a wide term. You can deal with the problem by forgetting it, you can deal with it by facing it, and so on. Steven exists in order to forget the abuse, basically defense mechanism by the mind where such events are being locked up and the person doesn't remember it, but somehow has emotional pain that cannot be explained whenever similar events reoccur which can unlock the bad memories.
So, if that's the case, then it makes sense, because that's how psychology works, or can work in case it doesn't play out like that and mind works around those issues differently...such as having Jake, which is a spoiler for me since I am still watching the series and I am hearing about this Jake for the first time, but it explains why neither Marc nor Steven knew about what happened and blamed each other for killing people in episode 3(?), and as I suspected there was a 3rd person or personality involved.

Idk, man. I think you missed the mark on this one… For one, Steven really develops a spine by the end of the show, especially after his revelation.
I disagree with you on the “strong female character” aspect on this one. She doesn’t come across as overly spectacular and for most of the show, she seems to be more reliant on Marc and Steven than she is on making it through things on her own. She would have been legitimately dead multiple times without external intervention and you come to see her recognize this as she accepts that she can’t change her circumstances as she is - or even as an avatar for that matter. Even at the end, she’s about to be Swiss cheese when Marc/Steven/SomethingElse goes berserk to save her. She’s competent, sure. But in a common sense way that makes you go, “yeah, that’s actually a smart choice for once. Good for you.”
I thought she was a better balance than most female characters and was a refreshing change to the status quo.
Granted, there were times. But it was enough to suspend disbelief.

I want to clarify something they were trying to do here, this is a real world Phenomenon called DID, short for Disassociate Identity Disorder.
The creations of people as coping mechanisms occurs in children and those people are called alters and they do infact occur from abuse at a young age and not later in life.
Marvel got the ideas down, being lost time, amnesia and waking up in different places, and an alter made to cope with the abuse at a young age doesn't have to be bitter and jaded, they can be friendly and kind and sweet or anything, they age literal people in your head.
I'll give marvel credit for nailing that, but the movie still isn't good.

This should be it, but then Marc just goes and rescues Steven like no problem at all, "I'll just spawn next to him". So essentially the show is saying having a mental illness is like a super power that you should hold on to.
      Pretty weird message.
Why not let Steven be "dead" and let audience be sad for him and root for Marc for being able to let go? Then bring in other personalities for the season finale, and bring Steven back in S2. I don't know, in any case, I don't think the mental illness aspect was handled all that well in the end.

I’m starting to think that Critical Drinker is a contrarian when it comes to some shit especially this. Hawkeye was a disappointing show but Kate Bishop is a comic character who is actually well written and fun to watch, she isn’t a diverse replacement for him she’s a mirror image of his youth in the comics at least and has been in existence for over a decade. As for moon knight it just seems like he’s nitpicking and basically slept though the whole fucking show. Layla isn’t just “strong female character” she’s basically spector’s tether to a normal life and his past. It disappoints me that they replaced Marlene with a nearly identical character on paper. She also doesn’t just win all of the time, she nearly gets murdered multiple times and frequently gets over powered and manages to get out of it with luck or by the skin of her teeth. The show didn’t promise anything about a globe trotting adventure either so that’s just unfounded. Only you who seemingly watched this show on the verge of sleep would think that the previous events before the asylum are fully real. If you knew anything about Moon Knight you would immediately question the reality of events from the first episode and even if you don’t know shit about moon knight, the guy has three personalities you would question whether or not what he sees is real. Also Steven is the way he is so that he becomes the comic version of himself later on, he has more agency over himself as the show goes on and by the end is as competent as Marc in certain areas or even surpasses him. They had to make Steven an every man so that they could not only build up to the mystery of who even is Marc Spector but also because since moon knight is obscure they needed a gateway character that could be more relatable to the audience so that he could later develop. He isn’t weak either he’s literally an integral part of the plot because of his intelligence and argues with Marc and wins sometimes. Comics Grant couldn’t handle himself in a fight either he’s a rich stock investor, Mr. Knight in the comics is a mix of Grant and Moon Knight as he’s a different personality who can fight and is calculating, moon knight himself is also another personality formed by the other 4. My problems with moon knight are lack of blood, lack luster cgi and that I wish that there was more ambiguity to what was happening with the gods. This was a good show obviously not even in daredevil’s league as he’s my favorite marvel character and that his show is one of my favorites of all time but it is quality but could still improve in future seasons.

Moon Knight is very much a show about Marc Spector and his damaged psyche from begining to end, and at no point does Layla takes over as the MC. The only time where she even comes close to that is when Marc is quite literally dead, and even then her mission was to follow Harrow and free Konshu so that he could revive Marc. And even when she gets her own powers, she still has to fight alongside Moon Knight in order to defeat Harrow. And either way, they almost lose until Jake swoops in and ends the fight.

I liked this show, and enjoyed the introduction to the Moon Knight character. I never read the comics and was fascinated by the concept and felt the acting and effects were great. I can agree with a few of the criticisms made, and accept that it is nowhere near perfect and opportunities were certainly missed, but I’d say that many of the criticisms here are very harsh and that plot points and exposition was watered down and omitted to portray the show as subpar. It’s fair that some will not like the show and I am open to videos like this that challenge my perspective after having seen a production, but I felt this video was overly harsh. If you’re considering watching Moon Knight definitely give it a whirl. It stands out from the rest of the recent shows Marvel has been churning out, and I felt that “the message” was far more subtle here than in other Marvel films in this phase.

I see the “Mary sue” aspect to “what’s her face,” but I actually really enjoyed the show, the acting performance by Oscar Isaac was out of the park, and I liked the fact that they weren’t in a different exotic city every scene. It made an already complex plot a bit simpler.

My #1 is with the show was "Strong Female Character". She was dreadfully boring and un-interesting.
I was engrossed enough in the show until a few episodes in when it felt like 90% of the episode was about her, and it was clear that Moon Knight/Steven/Mark were taking a backseat in their own show.
I can't stress enough how over this phase I am, with its agenda to obsess over pushing diverse characters over the ones we actually care about. Especially with some of these female characters that just kill any momentum a show had.

Well she was only a hero temporarily she didn’t take over Mark‘s mantle he still got his powers/contract back they’re working together she’s not only there as a strong female character she was literally the wife of the guy that was trying to figure out why he was “missing” and the show is clearly not about her she’s on the side, majority of the time is spent with Mark and others. The show is called Moon Knight.

      @Honey st I've seen Moon Knight and I can 100% guarantee that without her the show would have been way better ;
She is a literal Deus Ex Machina :
Anything happens ? No problem, Laila is here to get the Mcguffin, or help Mark, or free Konshu, or know the magic spell to emprison Ammit, in short, I think the writers hide their incompetence behind the SJW banner.
Also, that scene where the girl says "Are you an egyptian superhero ?" just made me break a nerve, I myself am Arab and I found it quite refreshing to have a movie with an Arab/Egyptian theme but that scene was such an unbelievably clear pat on the back of the writers for being "sO dARn iNclUsIVe" that it made me realize that no one at the multi-million dollar company that is Disney cares about Egyptians or their culture or anything other than money and their own self-assurance that they are the "HERos".

It's weird that a film like dr strange thats made for the mainstream audience including children manages to be alot more brutal with its violence when a tv show that's rated tv 14 that is built around It's main character being a literal mercenary is very tame with its framing of the violent scenes and the fact it is based on a obscure marvel character.

Look mate I hate that shit too but bring some actual arguments instead of shouting standard talking points we hear over and over again. Sadly I think this review was a missed opportunity to highlight what made this show better than most. Issac was brilliant and it’s great to see show driven by minority mythology..plus this must be one of the few Disney shows with the Violence , aggression , blood, body count, dialogue and commitment to character development.. it’s biggest failures are the rushed final episode and the drive to not give away the identity/nature of the 3rd persona. We needed to see the birth of JL caused by his mothers abuse rather than the intro of Steven. Easily one of the best recent Disney plus/marvel productions ..Looking forward to season 2.

He said the acting was good. Although I'm not sure there's any reason to say it's "great to see show driven by minority mythology". For one thing, the show is driven by the comic; for another, the mythology isn't very accurate; for a third, it's not like Egyptian mythology is some sort of obscure subject, it's not the mythology of the highland people of Southeast Asia or something.

Kind of disappointed The Drinker didn't acknowledge the subtle yet noticeable diversity like the main character being Jewish, and not to mention the fact that his character isn't built unrealistically which I find a bit refreshing. Also, say what you want but I like Steven more than Mark because he is very useful with his knowledge and interest in Egyptian myths and gods. Like some people are saying in the comments: Mark is the muscles and Steven is the brains, which is why they complement each other.

Moon Knight's story was good and very entertaining, but too generic, and that's what Marvel is becoming. Watching it felt the same way as with Loki, a really intriguing character with a large potential for an amazing story but was put into a generic and watchable story with the only goal to be more of the same Marvel Formula (but now with new characters) and never breaking off from its own chains.
Look what they did to a dark and complex character as Moon Knight, he's a family-friendly Deadpool in the MCU now.

I just commented the same exact thing. I watched the first 3 episodes and just lost steam for it. Idk what it was about it, it just got too messy for me. I can't put my finger on it but I think it had a lot to do with the fact that I (90% correctly) predicted the end of the show. No reason to bother watching. Plus, I agree about the mystery aspect, just seemed like there were no stakes to the story. At least Wanda and Loki show furthered some larger plot points.
