It took us DECADES to recover from the gas crunch. The Japanese cleaned the floor with us in the 80s, and our recovery in the 90s was completely overshadowed by the rise of JDM tuner culture. 9/11 turned all the money towards military production, and just when we were finding our footing again in 2008, the economy imploded. GM sold its soul to the feds, Chrysler was flogged off to the Italians, and Ford survived by sacrificing Mercury and its entire styling department.

    • @RandomCarGuy17
      @RandomCarGuy17 3 роки тому +9

@@sasl6987 That Demon has more modern technology used to make the engine qualify for our regulations while keeping it at 800hp. That and the car was built for something completely different from what the Buick LaSabre is used for, just to be sort-of comfy car built for being driven around versus the Demon being used to set fast 1/4 times at a drag strip.
There's also actually a benefit to why we have detuned, bigger engines versus just extracting power out of smaller engines. It sometimes can be more reliable to go with a bigger engine not using all of its power. That's part of why Ford Crown Victorias could last so long, they use less powerful modular engines.
EDIT: I looked it up. When extracting more power out of a smaller engine, you're typically increasing the compression and putting more stress out of that engine. Versus just using a bigger engine to make the same power, which won't have to work as hard, thus lasting longer. It's also cheaper in terms of engineering cost to use the bigger engine.

      @memillionthdoot4436 3 роки тому +8

@@RandomCarGuy17 I (opinionatedly, not factually) call BS on reliability for engines. They’re bigger because we love down-low torque. We would switch to small engines if we weren’t so enamored with 400lbft of torque at idle and nothing else. That, and also a way higher production of towing-capable vehicles here make that almost a necessity.

Actually, American english is the original pronunciation of english. The brits adopted their iconic accents to sound more sophisticated in the 1800s, thus Americans preserved the original pronunciation. My BMW Diesel from 2017 has an EGR and a DPF, essentially taking exhaust gases expelled from the engine BACK into the engine to be burned off again to lower emissions, in turn this clogs up the intake manifold and causes carbon build up in the engine intake ports....
Yet the germans still managed to get 313 bhp from that 3 litre straight six car that I have, and it does 0-60 in 4.6 seconds and has all wheel drive - AND it's a big "sedan" car... not some little pocket rocket.

If my memory is correct, there was this weight-to-power ratio, according to which it shouldn't be less than 10:1 - 1 hp per 10 pounds.
Hence, if a car is 3500 pounds, the power shouldn't exceed 350 horsepower.

It's more that US cars are built for low end torque and don't spin nearly as fast as small European over square engines. Since HP = (torque x RPM)/5,252 the peak horsepower on a lower revving engine will be lower even if the peak torque is the same or higher. For instance the Cummins 6.7 standard output in the Ram HD makes 850 lb ft/1,156 nm but only makes 370 hp.

Very few people from the UK resettle in the U.S. This is from observation:
    - assessing the immigrants in the university I attended for undergrad and post graduate school (Indians, Chinese, Iranians, Taiwanese, a few other middle eastern countries)
    - the immigrants I worked with in Silicon Valley high tech (Indians, Chinese, Iranians, Taiwanese, people from Hong Kong, some Japanese, a few people from Turkey, Germany, one from France)
I met a couple of people from England last week, in the U.S. on vacation, and asked them if they'd ever heard of the town called "Hethel" in Norwich, Norfolk.
"No, we're not familiar with that town."
It's the home base of Lotus. I've been purchasing Lotus sports cars, new, from dealers here in the U.S., since 1996.
I had a plumber who did some work at one of our rental units 3 weeks ago. "Are you from England?" "Yes" "Have you ever heard of Hethel?" "No"
He apparently met a U.S. gal while on vacation and relocated to the U.S.
I've met, worked with, attended University with, hundreds of immigrants. Very few from the UK.
Sort of wondering if many U.S. residents relocate to the UK.
Every person from the UK I have encountered since buying my first Lotus Esprit S4s in 1996, which admittedly has been fewer than 10 people, I've asked if they'd heard of Hethel. No one had heard of Hethel. I found that shocking, due to the Formula One impact of Colin Chapman. He brought "ground effects" to Formula One and many other important innovations. Also, England is the brain trust of F1, and most of the F1 constructors are based there.

      "Where was Emmerdale set?"
      "How about Heartbeat"?
Some people might know it but the average person won't.
At work a few months back, I went to a house in the UK that an American couple had moved into, the chap thought it was "wrong" that his wife wasn't allowed to carry pepper spray around with her and then proceeded to claim that in the UK you "Can't defend yourself" which is very incorrect.
They were reporting a road rage incident whereby another person had used some nasty language towards one of them, who was in the car on their own at the time... however one of the persons who was in the car on their own at the time had video recorded and taken photos when behind the car in question whilst driving, and didn't think anything of admitting or telling me that (I think you can guess my job).
When I pointed out that they may ALSO be prosecuted for it they sighed.... if you're going to move to another country it might help to learn the local laws. To get annoyed that you can't video record or use your phone whilst you're driving a car (save for an emergency), and to think you can't defend yourself and that it's ridiculous you can't carry pepper spray questions why you even moved to the UK in the first place.
It would be like me having major issues with the US gun culture as I do, and then moving my entire family there as they did when they relocated to the UK.

But you're comparing the USA which is a huge country and is supposedly so "technically advanced" to the tiny nation of the UK...
If you compare Europe to the USA which is actually a more appropriate comparison then it's shameful towards America.... it gets even worse... when you look at just how many Japanese and Korean cars are SOLD in America, who actually still has plenty of it's own manufacturers i'd say your problem is far worse.
Britain to my knowledge only has Vauxhall as the remaining "British car maker"... although there's a European equivalent called "Opel" and I don't know if Vauxhall is actually even fully British owned anymore. There's still plenty of Vauxhalls on the roads in the UK and it's actually quite a common, cheap and reliable car.
They're a pain in the ass to work on for mechanics but they generally work well, and last, most british police forces use Vauxhall cars, and they wouldn't use something in vast quantities if it was unreliable would they?
When you compare the number of Vauxhall's driven in the UK as a percentage of total cars compared to the number of American cars driven in the US, the figures probably aren't too different.
America has loads of home grown car makers and yet many people still choose foreign brands such as Kia, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes, BMW etc.
Meanwhile the UK only has Vauxhall left and there's still plenty of Vauxhalls on the road in the UK, it's quite a common car.

You’re not going to find many spelling bee champions in Las Vegas, let alone trivia pursuit winners.

I love how anytime they question Americans about European geography, they always go to Las Vegas, or a very populated city, where, as numbers have it, is the stupidest populus of the country. Too populated for each teacher to actually care about teaching, barely managing the students

Are you ACTUALLY trying to excuse the ignorance of these Americans by claiming the city they live in is too large to have proper education?! Man, and I thought I had seen it all when it comes to stupidity

If you think that's bad you should check out the education system in the sticks. When they teach history they probably start with Genesis.
