The song was much, much rougher back in the 90s when his voice was actually at it's peak. Fans were legitimately surprised that he was singing this song so well in the late 2000s compared to how he used to sound. He's not a well-trained singer, he's a punk rock guy that got vocal training in his 40s. It's all punk rock anyway - details aren't worth fussing over.
