Nice! For y'all wondering:
- at 4ohm the amp doesn't activate any of the "smart" features that limit the sine wave amplitude. The output will go all the way up to rail limits, which is why clipping and dynamic results are very similar, because the limit is a physical wall being the rail voltage.
- at the lower impedances, the amp will artificially "clip" or limit the sine wave amplitude to keep the overall power across the output section to around 3k. In order to limit, it needs to read the curent drawn initially, so there is a small delay before the reduction in amplitude is applied. The slow ramp up of the clipping tests allows this to work as intended. However the dynamic burst is so quick that the amp doesn't have enough time to apply the limit before part of the first cycle of the pulse has already happened. That's why you're seeing crazy dynamic figures. For those pulses, the sine wave is allowed to briefly for a fraction of the first cycle swing to near full rail limits ignoring the smart limit feature. On paper, if we ignore internal voltage drop this would mean:
3000wrms into a 4ohm load is a 109v sine wave, so that's where the rail limit caps off at.
Put the same 109v sine wave into a 2ohm load and the amp will try to make 5900w
109v into a 1ohm load it will try to make 11881w
109v into a 0.5ohm load it will try and make 23762w
This would only be the case if the amplifier was able to maintain a solid 109v into the applied load without dropping voltage internally, having the supply to support it, and without overloading the components and catching fire. Obviously these numbers are outrageous and there are many factors greatly preventing this happening aside from the component limits - the smart limiter kicks in after only a fraction of the first cycle quickly ramping down the sine wave voltage so the RMS of that cycle is far lower - also there is considerable rail sag under heavy load. But the reason that the dynamic burst power readings are so high is due to the voltage of the pulsed sine wave for the first part of it being much higher than the amp wants it to be. This will cause the amp to sound a bit different to an older amp that can just make the power straight up, because when the bass hits it will slap hard asf for the first quarter second and then seem to taper off into a lower level, which may or may not be noticeable.

Good info! I would be interested to see if there is a 1/4 second voltage spike to the subs perhaps with an analog meter. I wonder if any Smart 3 owners can comment on these amps sounding any different. Only the Taramps Smart 3 line of amplifiers would ever have this anomaly (if it exists) as the other lines don't have the "smart" electronics.
I'm sure this is great information, but now isn't the time nor place for this book 😉. So how about doing your own on this amp, we'll watch and give you thumbs-up and comments 😉

It definitely made up for its lack of power in 4 and 2 ohm by surpassing the power output in half an ohm. I'm impressed and to not blow is another plus

@@cali8221 I haven't owned either so I don't have personal exp of what they sound like BUT the smart 3 plays all frequencies not just sub, I think if you gonna get a sub do a smart 3 bass

I've watched hours and hours and hours (yes hours ^ 3) of amp and sub videos and I've decided the Smart 3 Bass and a Kicker Quad Box is what I'm using for my next build. Thanks Big D (and the other guys I watch) for making this an easy decision.
Aye nothing wrong with them amps I have the bass 3k and I’m totally happy just upgraded your battery under your hood and get at least a xs 3400 under the hood and in back then upgrade your alternator to at least 300 amps and big three that MF will have you beating up the block I’m like literally surprised like that MF can push anything and I’m so happy I’m about to get the bass 8k then I’ll be fine!
We're gonna have to change our thinking a bit. When I walk up to a SPL ride I expect to see a lot of things...unfinished interior, pro audio drivers galore, and multiple huge 10K surfboard amps with waterhose size power and grounds.
These look like the next wave for the SPL crowd. Should be a huge space saver. More room for subs I guess! 😁

I have one of these on 2 Skar VXF 1500w rms. Well worth the money and it delivers unlike most bass amps you’ll come across. I’ve done Alpine, Pioneer, this amp has a very wide bass spectrum. I have the MD1800.1 on highs and mids, let me you, it’s an opera house on wheels.
So let me ask u this..im looking for a mono d block my power acoustic 8k jus took a die on me for my 1 15 inch kicker L7..but im ready upgrade to 2 skar vfx 15s..whats the difference in the taramp bass 3k and the taramp smart 3k??
@@cali8221 smart 3k just smart it won’t let you go over rated output it will do the smart thing and protect itself the bass 3k is just raw power will still protect itself but not as smart I have the bass 3k on vxfs you might want to get ether the Smart Bass 5k or bass whatever your preference! The 3k will get t done don’t get me wrong put the power to it you will for sure beat down the block for me just to know I have the xtra power at hand is what I’m saying just incase I want to add a 3rd vxf the power is there!

Clipping like crazy in the dynamic test.
The Dyno measures this test at clipping. The Dynamic is the “take it with a grain of salt” test, especially when you see crazy high numbers like this. It’s a solid 3500W plus amp at 1 ohm
Hope you dyno the sundown S.I.A 3500 next .. I want to see what it can do .

Obviously they optimized it to run at 1ohm and theoretically still be safe. The fact it made significantly less power into 2 or 4 seems to indicate it doesn't put out even close to the same rated power into 2 ohms. Would have been nice if it could.

Big D, did you use 40Hz test tone for all the ohm test? seeing that the low pass filter on the amp lowest point is 60Hz

I stuck the smart 3 in my gfs car powering two skar 12s. Pretty happy for the price (like 265 or something, I can't remember honestly).

Great video! I think my original smart 3 is just fine for subs. I do have to disagree with you on 1 thing though, you said you won't notice a couple 100 watts, this is why us bass heads chase every volt, every watt because it makes a huge difference. Im sure you didn't mean it though :) yeah boi
Kurt's, I think it would take a great ear to notice the difference in only a couple hundred watts on bigger amps like the one in video. Of course one will hear the difference when using a small amp (500, 800 or maybe even a 1200 watt) but when you've got larger amps (3k, 5k, 8k, etc & you're dealing with numbers like that it becomes near impossible to audibly notice a loss or gain as insignificant as 5% or 8%...
**IMO someone truly concerned about two hundred watts or every volt & every watt would not be buying a Full Bridge amp. Seems with such a concern for each watt that they would be buying quality half bridge amp tech. Considering a solid Korean (or even American made amp, example Mmats) half bridge amp typically have great cone control, great tone/deep, low bass, stable at low ohm loads, etc.
I'm not saying I don't want those extra two hundred watts, of course I would rather have them going through my speakers versus being parasitically lost to impedance. Though, I doubt I would ever notice the difference in a lack or gain of 200 watts from the 4 current subwoofer amps that I own... My Taramps Smart3, Taramps MD8000.1, Sundown Audio sfb5000 & Trauma Concussion 3000 amp.
*These are just my thoughts & opinions.
@@itdoesntmatterwhatyourname6128 I know what you mean by there is less difference when you go up to higher power levels, but ive watched plenty of vids of people going from AGM to lithium and got from 12v to 13v full tilt and notice a huge difference.

Hey Big D, luv your shows. Why do u need a clip light if gains r set correctly?
i would never buy an amp without a clip light that I can put under my head unit. people don't know how to sets their gains, songs are recorded at different levels, some songs hit harder, if you like it as loud as possible you gotta always monitor your clip light if your pushing a lot of power. people set their gains with speakers unplugged and then when they plug the speakers in they're going to clip way earlier.
