Combo sets are common on the professional golf tours but where should you make the transition from the higher launching more forgiving long iron into the shot shaping flight control players iron.
#subscribe and follow along as I dive deeper into what we should consider as players and also fitters when approaching this iron set up.
I will demonstrate what I look for in both the NEW TaylorMade P770 and P7CB models, the ideal apex and launch is highlighted and I explain what you should look for in spin rate and how this will also impact the choices you make.

I’ve got a fitting in 5 days and spoke to the Pro when I was booking it in.
As long as he doesn’t fit me into other irons which are undeniably better for me, I’ll be going with the 770/P7CB combo set, crossing over at the 6 iron

Trott plays traditional KBS Tour like a boss. As a blade player was blown away by the compact nature of the new 770 and even considered a full set, but the PW and 9 iron are quite thick. Can't be looking at that when I'm flag hunting.
P7CB's in the shorts?
@@trottiegolf yeah that's definitely a consideration. Although it's probably more just something that I need to get over. If the best players in the world can look at the 770 pitching wedge, who am I to say?

I got fitted a couple days ago! 4, 5, and 6 in the 770 and 7-PW in the CB. The feel is absolutely unmatched. I’ve never felt anything like it!
Did you get the lofts adjusted to get good gapping?
@@JamesGolfing the new 770s and CBs have the same lofts. At least the 6i and 7i to my knowledge.
@trottie Can you cover the AW set wedge for the CB & 770?
A wedge just a gap between PW and Sand no? Never seen one on tour but can certainly look into it

Now I want to buy a full set of P-7CB and a full set of P-7TW to build combo sets out of lol thanks Trottie (maybe a video on CB+TW? 😉)
All this is great - but most suppliers only hold and fit one iron (usually 7) with no ability for the customer to try the full set
Well if you were already going to spend thousands of dollars on a fitting you might as well go a fly or whatever to see a good fitter who has plenty of stuff
Go get a real fitting
Even golf galaxy has more than just the 7 iron

@@atamagashocknot all. I went and got fitted for these and they only had a 7-iron at mine.
I have old P770 4-5….ordered new P770 6-7….P7CB 8-PW……debated about switching at 7 or 8….decided to error on side of higher loft…
Ahhhh Trott!!! The ultimate squad is:
P7TW 5-P w/ weak lofts & DG x100s (ultimate in flighting and spin control).
Pre-wear the leading edge w/ weak lofts adding bounce.
After you try it, you'll recognize a different 'thump' and turf interaction.
Tour rescues in the long irons and/or p770 in the mid and/or long
Substitute squad members as needed.
The bottom line is: No one is accurate from 190yds+

Thoughts on a 770/790 combo? I’m sure the loft would need tweaked to reduce the gap but man, it would be lovely to play 770 P-7 and 790 6-4
all about the lofts there. I'd say get into the P770 as soon as your confidence level allows. Meaning 6 - down at the least (dependent on hcp level)
If someone wanted to combo the 770s with the 790s for long club forgiveness roughly how would you adjust for that scenario? Let’s say 5/6 iron 790s
I'd look at launch and spin and adjust accordingly on the lofts. Certainly can be done but I'd keep an eye on the gap when you transition from one model to the next
Any idea on how to have a bit of lead edge relief on a set of P7CB?
Dangerous game! Grind wheel and swing weight machine but I don't love it
Hello, I am a Korean golfer. Is it a good combo to have P770 4-6 iron and P7CB 7-P iron? I am worried that the gap between 6-7 irons will be too big. Thank you for the great video.
Yes it's a solid option. Follow the steps in this video to ensure you're dialed
What about P790 and P770?
You can probably want the 90’s in the longer irons because there are more forgiving

Do you think spin at 6000 to 7000 is a bit overrated as 6 k spin in air for 4 -5 seconds is 100 revs per sec compared to 7 k spin is 116 per sec do you think 16 revs make that much difference 🤔
Depends on your speed and launch. Spin is player dependent and I often relate to tour speed in my vids.
