This video is a good example of why Aaron at Sage Dynamics is THE go-to authoritative source for video instruction on UA-cam. Few instructors have the depth of understanding in these topics as Aaron, and nobody breaks it down as thoroughly and intuitively as Aaron. I am having JagerWerks mill the slide of a Gen IV Glock 20 for a Holosun 509T, and as this is my first red dot equipped handgun and I am a little apprehensive about acquiring a new skill set, I turned to UA-cam to get some insight, tips, and drills to practice from trusted sources, the first of which was Aaron at Sage Dynamics, and he did not disappoint. Aaron never disappoints.
Aaron I love your shit man. Thanks for all the great work. Being as I am a year out of college and starting a family I don’t have the money to take a class from you but between this show and shooting with my friend who is retired sf, I have learned so much! Thanks bro.
I’ve been shooting/carrying/competing with a red dot for a couple of years, but it’s always fun when Aaron posts a video and reminds me how little I actually know! Thanks Aaron!
Thorough is an understatement. You are consistently 'widow's peak' deep in every subject you present. The amount of information in this video alone is simply stunning. I would have to study it minute by minute, technique by technique for a week to squeeze half of what you've presented here. My hat is off in awe of your expertise, sir!
I'm like a sponge....just bought my first red dot for a Glock....at first I was like "this guy talks way to much." Then I actually started listening. I learned a whole lot. Thank you sir.
Love the instruction and reviews, keep up the amazing job you do for us all. Converted to a RDS on my pistol and man I love it. Your videos are improving my abilities quite well. Thanks for posting!!
I’ve just sent my Glock 19 off to Jagerwerks to have my slide milled and my first RMR fitted to it. I just wanted to say thanks for the years of educational content you’ve published regarding RDS pistols. It’s already been very helpful to me and I only just started the process of having an RMR fitted to my gun. I really want to come take your class once I get the gun back.
Well done again, Aaron. Keep up coming. I am collecting them and your earlier vids into a playlist to share with other shooters interested in RDS shooting. I have had mine for several months now and appreciate the drills to improve its use.
Most excellent presentation. Much of this I’ve become familiar with via personal practice and experience but it’s great to hear the whys behind what’s happening! Thanks!
Aaron, you couldn’t have timed the release of this series of videos for me any better than if I’d paid you to do it. I’ve begun the transition to red dots on my carry pistol since my vision no longer allows me to see a front sight in focus. I participated in my first two-day RDS course at The Complete Combatant this weekend, and boy do I have a lot to practice on and refine before I am competent enough to carry an RDS equipped pistol every day. Your videos will assist me in achieving that goal, and I thank you for making them. Carry on accordingly!
Really love the thorough details so tips u give. I am a rds guy till the end, years with them on riffles, but making the inevitable switch for the pistol and am very detailed oriented with my shooting and wanting the same experience with my pistol skills concerning my rds...I'm late on making the change but finally it's happening and I'm holding myself to a higher standard just as if I were shooting a riffle with a RDS..... thanks man.
Thanks for all these RDS fundamentals videos. I’ll definitely be rewatching them multiple times. Your videos are like RDS Textbooks. Or dare I say... bible?

Very knowledgeable, I been following the series and seen the rds videos you did a couple years ago on how to zero it before I got my rmr rm06. I want to take your rds course when ammo is available again.
Aaron hits B-zones?!? Nonsense! Another great video, be as thorough as you want man. Learning a lot from the past 3 vids and then your older ones about the RDS.
Hello and thank you for your extensive information on red dots... I have RMR on my 509 and a SRO on my 92 G centurion verdec... I can seem to bring the red dot half way down. I understand it’s not to co-witness with from sight but they sits too high . Elevation adjustment is at its maximum reaching point on both. How can I fix this ?
Started watching these today - thank you for this information which presents me a question - 6 MOA/3.25 MOA what would one use to decide which to pick? I feel larger is easier to find but maybe that’s not the only point to consider now after listening to your knowledge.
Sorta "fixed", definitely makes the "problem" less of an issue (even before RDS there have been plenty of great cross-dominant shooters). I have the same right handed/left eye dominant issue -> I ended up shooting handguns right handed and rifles lefty (mostly, barricades/positional obvious exceptions). This is usually the easiest way for most cross-dominant shooters to train, but not all. The "easiest" way to train to fix cross-dominance shooting issues depends on how strong your hand and eye dominance is. If your eye cross-dominance isn't very strong, some people find it easier to train their non-dominant eye to be dominant when shooting. On the other hand you can also just learn to shoot with the hand on the side of your dominant eye. Some trainers believe switching hands to be the "ideal" way if you're just starting out. IMO with the majority of guns configured for righties and most people having very strong hand-dominance, learning to shoot handguns with your "off" hand as the primary is not the easiest way. The RDS getting rid of the need to line up the front and rear sites was a big help to me. With irons I was always trying to figure out if it was better to cant the pistol vs shifting it straight under my dominant eye. With a RDS equipped pistol, I have found that shifting the pistol under my dominant eye is the fastest and most consistent. Aaron himself is cross-dominant and has done a video on the issue: ua-cam.com/video/i8lbIdkT01w/v-deo.html
UA-cam search "recoil control and you" and "shoot like a boss" by The Humble Marksman. It fundamentally changed the way I shoot. I was already a decent shooter but this kicked me up to the next level. One of the things it covers is proper arm placement (when extended) + neutral body/head position, which made my cross eye dominance a non-issue. I now have absolutely no problem shooting cross eye dominant with either irons or red dot. TPC (Tactical Performance Center) is also another *amazing* resource for shooting technique. If you enjoy the awesome top tier content of Sage Dynamics, you'll like those other two channels. On a side note, with the current ammo situation, I highly recommend the MantisX device for training at home.
@@yzhou05 Yeah shifting the pistol slightly to bring it in-line with the dominant eye was a game changer for me. Read my other response to the original comment, the two YT channels I mention are amazing resources for anyone looking to improve. And of course Sage Dynamics is up there in that top tier as well.
Any chance you could explain what your sight picture should look like with lower third co witness iron sights? For instance, I have a handgun with an rmr that was bore sighted to the iron sights and if I use a traditional sight picture I see my irons and my dot lined up. However, if I just lower the gun slightly in relation to my eyes, I see just the dot with irons underneath the dot. Thanks in advance.
I did a little light reading on Troxler Effect and do you think your perception of the dot jerking to the right is a micro-saccade? If so, doesn't seem like there is anything that can be done about it. Or do you think it is a nervous / muscular spasm?
Does anyone know what kind of 'G forces' a handgun slide is subjected to under recoil, would really be interested in finding out? I'm thinking 20G+.....
At the end of my pistol presentation there is a feel....I cant explain it but i know blind folded if Im equal height ,equal light with my iron sights. Im pretty sure everybody can feel it . Hopefully that helps when my pistol gets back with my red dot on it.
Best way to get comfortable with the 'extra movement' of the red dot is to take the iron sights off the gun, in my opinion. At least for people who are new to the red dot, then put the irons back on later (or leave them off like I do).
Mine is so bad, I should stick with irons, but I'm giving it time. I'm a hell of a shot with my irons, just trying to be the best I can. I will learn this red dot sight picture.
@@62dobie Smaller dot, smaller blob. Try the 1 MOA RMR, works great for me (though I eventually got laser eye surgery that fixed most of my astigmatism anyway lol).
@@yzhou05, agreed. I'm using a 2moa dot. Love it. I've made the changes to all but one of my firearms. My MOD2 Service im not going to change. I can shoot a dime size hole at 25yards with it. So no need to change that one yet. It wasn't hard to change over. Just had to get used to the cross eye dominant part.
Quick question and something that kind of has me shook. After "zeroing" my first red dot at the range today (25yds, Glock 43x, Trijicon RMRcc) I noticed that when I use the back up irons, the dot is NO WHERE NEAR the front sight post as I would naturally expect it to be, and it is infact very far over to the left of the glass when looking through my iron sights. On the same token, when using the red dot and centering it in the glass over a target I can look down and tell that my iron sights, and therfore my gun/bore is noticeably canted to the right). I can make groups just fine with my iron sights, and I can make groups just fine when using my red dot. My question is, by "zeroing" the red dot, did I basically adjust the dot to compensate for poor shooting? (Jerking, Trigger impulse, anticipation, etc.) or is that just a normal phenomenon? Because as it stands now, everytime I look through my BUIS, and I see that little dot wayyy over to the left of the window it has me feeling self-conscious. So is this a personal, training issue, or is this normal? I can't find much info on the matter. Thanks
There’s no way I can answer that without observing you shoot. The RDS is a smaller POA than a front sight. The iron sights may be slightly misaligned. The RDS isn’t naturally nor does it need to be slaved to the irons to be zeroed.
I'm cross eye dominant, is it important to use you dominant eye with a red dot sight? I now turn my head to bring my dominant eye inline with my sights. This way does not feel natural.
So I think I misunderstood when I went to zero my 507k on my hellcat. I slaved the dot to my front post and then kept lining up my iron sites when I shot and adjusting. If I understand it correctly now, I should slave the dot to the front post and then center the dot in the window the best that i can and forget about the iron sights and adjust from there. Correct
Thank God for your videos. And I mean that. Everything I’ve learned about Red dot shooting has come from you. Do you plan on coming to, or near Michigan for classes?
Umm the distance you plan on shooting..... At the size targets you intend on hitting?. 😱 Jokes aside....it sounds like your a new shooter.....sight in at 10 yards for now....take it to 25 when you can ..... Shoot at pieces of paper 8x11 with a post it note stuck to it....... Try to hit the note.....but stay on the paper.... hope it helps
Prone_ Wolf Been shootin for years. New to red dots. I just wasnt sure if that size of dot at 25yds would be hard to group. Or like you said cut the distance in half, sight it in and then adjust POI after that. I can see gettin a zero on a 1in circle with a 2moa dot, but not quite sure about the 6. Like i said, I am a new shooter with red dots so be gentle 😆.
I would like to here you talk about cross eye dominant shooters sometime. I would like to know your honest opinion about it and advise. Weather it’s to change hands or just do what’s natural As a cross eye dominant shooter that’s grown to trusts you and your advice I wanna hear it, it’s important to me that I am training accordingly and I run a Trijicon RMR witch is extremely helpful to me bring cross dominant thanks man hope you read this.

Thanks
So the wobble of the red dot is actually my grip causing the wobble?
Do you still recommend the 6MOA Dot over the 3.25?
I'm cross eye dominant, is it important to use you dominant eye with a red dot sight? I now turn my head to bring my dominant eye inline with my sights. This way does not feel natural.
So if one can hold the red dot absolutely still, it means the pistol itself isn't moving? By extention the fundamentals should be good?
So I think I misunderstood when I went to zero my 507k on my hellcat. I slaved the dot to my front post and then kept lining up my iron sites when I shot and adjusting.
If I understand it correctly now, I should slave the dot to the front post and then center the dot in the window the best that i can and forget about the iron sights and adjust from there. Correct
Ok I’m just starting this video and I’m distracted cause this dude’s hands are ginormous.
Thank God for your videos. And I mean that. Everything I’ve learned about Red dot shooting has come from you. Do you plan on coming to, or near Michigan for classes?
I don't know where you are in Michigan, but Sage Dynamics is running a 2 day class in Lebanon, Indiana in August 2021. Posted on their website now.
Aaron's sunglasses have better parrallax than an RMR.
I plan on gettin a 407k for my P365xl. What is a good distance to sight that red dot in? 3.7in barrel and a 6 moa dot. What size target?
Umm the distance you plan on shooting.....
At the size targets you intend on hitting?.
😱
Jokes aside....it sounds like your a new shooter.....sight in at 10 yards for now....take it to 25 when you can .....
Are you coming to Washington state to do a class?
