  • Mazda CX-5 v Peugeot 3008: The newcomer versus the champ. This isn’t some naff reference to a big money fight, but by the same token, it kind of is - because here we have the much-lauded European that’s all about swagger, going against the stalwart chart-topper with a tremendous record.

    I bought my 3008 (the automatic, 2lt turbo diesel) about 6 months ago. I test-drove many, including the CX-5, and went with the 3008. You know why I chose it? It was the only car that LITERALLY brought a smile to my face when I drove it. After 6 months, it still does.

    I leased a 3008 GT Diesel for 3 months in Europe in 2018. April to July. It was an awesome car. I did 12,000 k's in it in that time. Took it from Holland to Italy, Austria, Germany & the UK. It did 190kph on the Autobahn in Germany, It drove over the French Italian alps in sub zero temperatures. It cruised around small Dutch roads like it was meant for them. It loved motorways in the UK and tiny roads in the Yorkshire Dales. It did not miss a beat. It was so good that when I got back to Australia I decided to buy one. Went to Von Bibra Motors in Southport and bought a brand new 3008 GT Line 1.6 litre Petrol in Pearl White with every option. Leather, heated/massage seats, panoramic sunroof, electric tailgate, Android Auto/Apple carplay, Sat Nav, Lane Departure Warning, Auto Emergency Braking, Radar cruise Control, Keyless Start & Locking, Speed Sign Recognition .. the list goes on. These 3008's are just in another league when it comes to competitor SUV's. It shits on the CX5 and laughs at the Tiguan. Have done 4500k's in it so far in South East Queensland and it attracts looks everywhere it goes. Lots of people look at it and you can see them thinking "WTF is that, looks awesome". If you want to get the boring as batshit Mazda that everyone else seems to buy you will be sorry if you ever park it next to one of these 3008's.

    I've owned a Peugeot 3008 SUV for 6 months and it is brilliant. The build quality is probably far better than most people expect. Though it is not a 4 x 4 it does have Opti - Grip as an option. If you think that is a poor relation to 4 x 4, take a look at the independent You Tube review where it is used off road in deep snow.

    Agree, we got our 3008 GT Line in late November 2018 and its a great car. Try the Manuel Paddle Shift on Sports mode and it feels like a sports car on steroids. We thought of the Mazda, Toyota, and many others, but to us it was chalk and cheese. My brother in-law has the 508 in Italy and he has used it for more than 10 years with over 300,000 kilometres and still running from south of Italy to north. We hired one last year and we had to switch over to the French cars. If you are considering buying one, the top of the line is worth the money. If you think they are junk, it’s because you know nothing about the brand or what they have to offer. Have a look at how much Peugeot go into their engine technology and all the races they are winners of in comparison with other cars than make your statement.

    The Mazda looks like every car on the market in terms of the interior. The design is so bleak. I reckon Peugeot has got the win. Plus, the infotainment is kind of outdated. And for those who talk about reliability. You really need to do some research. Resale value will be fine as I'm not competing against 100's of other Mazda Cx-5 that a buy can choose from. It really doesn't matter a car is the most depreciating assets you will ever own.

    In UK reliability tests Peugeot is improving and has reached slightly above average with many of its newer products. Mazda is still way ahead though. But in terms of wow factor I'd never tired of sitting in the Peugeot. That said I hired a 308 hatch and hated the infotainment as everything needed the screen to control it, showed up finger prints as it was glossy screen and not very responsive either. So you might need to clean the screen often or it'll look awful. Not sure if 3008 has improved it.

      I am not from Australia, but here in Egypt the peugeot went to serious problems since they started the 405 early models which was assembeled here and it was money pit with never ending problems. The history goes on with different dealers changed past decades with still problems of bad AC and engine problems and very expensive unprofessional dealer services. The latest official dealer nor "Mansour" is known of money pit and unprof3ssional services and unfortunately this could be the end of this nice brand here in Egypt because he is selling it way overpriced and also he is selling it without many of its standard options and even the highest trim Gt is sold with zero active city safety technology (no active lane assist, no adaptive cruise control, no auto braking, nothing, even the perfume and massage options seems to be stolen from the car because they are not offered in that trim. It is so sad to see how big companies like peugeot can loose easily a market of 100 million citezen who were once (at times of 504, 305, 205, 104) a loyal fans of this brand.

      @Salt & Pepper Peugeot with 2.0 HDI diesel engines are very reliable (can do 1 million kms, aisin transmission are also generally good), while Mazda 2.2 diesel has some problems. So if you want reliability in case of Mazda, you have to get the gasoline. Which again, is too weak and lacks torque in non-turbo versions that are sold in Europe (2.0 & 2.5 gasoline). It is also heavily taxed (2.2 diesel and 2.5 gasoline), because it exceeds 2l capacity. So in Europe Peugeot is a better choice. Just do not get it with 1.6 PureTech/THP engine, which is unreliable.

  • @magmagmag9
    @magmagmag9 6 років тому +6

    I say reliability is relative. It differs from one market to another as factors like brand recognition, second hand value, competition, market saturation, but most importantly climate comes into play. Peugeots might be reliable in more temperate climates like the Australia, UK or some parts of the world, but not so in tropical countries like Malaysia or Brazil for example.
    In Malaysia, Peugeots(perhaps French cars in general) are notorious for being extremely unreliable (especially the seals, gaskets, and of course the transmission) and expensive to repair. Most people blame the punishing tropical climate. While others simply blame it on the so called "European centric" design and engineering, a label that also applies to other Continental brands as well. Which holds some truth as most European cars are generally not engineered well enough to withstand the climate here. A reason why most Malaysians prefer Japanese, and our own Protons and Peroduas over Continental.
    The irony? PSA is using Malaysia as a base camp for their South East Asian campaign.
    So it's best to rely on reviews done by your respective local sources and take foreign content with a pinch of salt.

    • @brismike56

    I drive the old 3008, 2011 model. The 1.6 turbo engine is great. didnt like the ride now, its not as cushy as the latest one. Perhaps its the tires. but i do like the drive. So far I have been in the workshop for valve cover change, a couple of batteries, one a/c compressor change through out the years. Having had driven renaults before, my 3008 doesnt suffer much from electrical glitches. Fuel consumption is a bit on the poor side but maybe its just my heavy foot. All is still well and I wish the a/c would be cooler than normal. I compared it against some japanese make for reliability and parts service, its basically the same. Even cheaper. It turned out to be very UNRELIABLE, and generally horrible engine (2.0 HDI diesel is much better). BMW dropped this engine, but Peugeot sadly still uses it. Avoid any Peugeot with 1.6 petrol engine, even if they tell you its the new "1.6 PureTech" - because its marketing term. 1.2 engine is true new "PureTech" family, 1.6 is THP sold under "PureTech" name. Peugeot interior definitely futuristic and interesting but that's, all as far as I'm concerned! Mazda looks like it's in the luxury class, as opposed to the Peugeot, which looks positively more mainstream- for want of a better description. All Mazda needs now is the Apple/Android intergration, some cool air to go with the heated seats and lastly some more interior colours for those lovely leather facings. They already smash the competition! Add the above amendments and they would pretty much be untouchable in class. By the way, has anyone else here seen some of their concepts at the Tokyo motor show? Absolutely, sublime me thinks! ;)

      beat spacek I’d say the Mazda is more feminine lines, sort of what you expect from Italian cars, while the Peugeot is European but heavily inspired by the American muscle cars. The rear looks a lot like the Ford Mustang. I’d be happy with either, I think that are both good looking and stand out from most other SUVs.

    The Peugeot 3008 top of the range model has a feature called 'Grip Control' where it lets you select a few off-road modes (Sand, snow etc.) which adjusts the traction control on the 2WD system to tackle most off-roads you will ever take one of these cars. So if you all think AWD makes the Mazda more off-road capable think again. And lookup the Grip Control mode demos it works like a charm and in fact praise Peugeot for developing something like that because now you delete the need for an AWD system and manage with this. None of these cars are ever going to do Land Cruiser off-roading so this is all you need for that occasional situation. I own the 2019 Peugeot 3008 GTLine top spec and must admit I have not been happier to drive any other car as much as this one. Puts a smile on your face any day :)

    In Malaysia, it's difficult to maintain these French cars such as Citroen, Peugeot. Main reason would be climate. But these reasons could be valid in the 80s or 90s. But for now it's been a standard manufacturing for all the Continent by French companies. Yet why they still can't compete with Japanese cars in terms of sales in Malaysia. Theain reason would be Chinese dominated market in Malaysia for the automobile industry. Toyota and Honda have major shares of the Chinese community in Malaysia and also China cars. Although these Japanese and China cars have nothing to offer, yet we Malaysians still pay a high price for empty tins. As for the French car sales dilema in Malaysia, it always have a case of sabotaging the after sales of the French cars at which the maintenance costs are simply hiked up by Chinese business men so that the Japanese cars would sell well in Malaysia. But when comparing to specs and technical details of Japanese and French cars, the French are far more superior in terms or technology and engineering whereas the Japanese cars has nothing to offer rather than some funky facelifts with the same engines under the hood for the next 5 years. But why still choose the Japanese ? It's because the maintenance costs have been standardized and kept at a low margine so that the Chinese can monopolize the automobile industry with low quality Japanese and China cars. Same goes to Proton which is a Malaysian made car. The build quality is one of the worst of it's kind. But in the end, the government hiked up the import car taxes so that I the people would not be able to afford high quality European or the on top of average Japanese cars, and forced to buy Proton because of the lower price which is a cheap plastic basically. And good news is, a Chinese car manufacturer have already bought over Proton and back to square 1, the Chinese Monopoly is in the Malaysian market again. We hope the future and people perspective would change towards European cars and also the after service cost could be brought to an affordable margin and not simply hiked up so that the people could afford good cars in Malaysia .

    • @nickc6882
      @nickc6882 6 років тому +3

      Nabil Matar
      Mazda is less reliable than Hyundai and Kia.
      Look at the 2017 JD Power figures. This is the industry benchmark for reliability. They survey tens of thousands of new car owners and calculate reliability in their Vehicle Dependability figures.
      Hyundai and Kia both Score better than Mazda In 2017 ( I’ve only looked at the US 2017 figures by the way).
      Top 3 for reliability are Lexus, Porsche and Toyota.
      Hyundai is 6th, Mazda is about 10th.
      Hyundai now offers a standard 5 yr warranty ad Kia offer 7. They back themselves to get it right.
      So i think your comment that Mazda is more reliable than the Korean brands is incorrect … Peugeot on the other hand ...
      😀

      Thibaut Sa figures for what? I'm talking from a personal experience with French cars. I had a Renault Megane with an auto transmission that made me hate every bit of it. It drove well and was stable on the road, but the fact that its transmission broke down so often with pricy repairs made me get rid of it. What's so hard about making a reliable automatic transmission that the French find it hard to match other auto makers?

    • @nabilm2941
      @nabilm2941 6 років тому

      Thibaut Sa I am showing you one example of what happened with my Renault. Go check some consumer reports on different websites from different countries and you will see that most people who had an experience with French cars do not recommend them. I bought my Renault because I knew that Renault-Nissan is one company. Little that I know that Nissan was having its own troubles with some reliability issues especially with its CVT transimissions and electric parts. Among the Japanese, Nissan is not doing the best and others making more reliable cars.
      It is a fact that almost all the line-up of Peugeot and Citroen share most of their essential parts whether it's a hatchback or an mpv or a sedan or a small SUV which explains when something goes wrong with a car, it usually happens across the whole range of the manufacturer's cars.
      I tell you again I am not only basing my information on my personal experience or from what I hear from my friends and family's own experiences with the French car, but also from consumer reports from different websites.
      They might have improved and there should always be room for progression through the years just like many other manufacturers have improved even further, even if they were already doing well (like Mazda).
      Just take a look at the resale value of the French cars how they drop where you buy a used one (which is very tempting to buy as used) for the price of an older Japanese model of the same segment. You can compare the prices of a megane and a 308 vs a civic and get a note of what I'm saying. :)
