    If I were only using my eyes to choose one I would definitely go for CX-5 as it looks so good both when it comes to exterior and interior. But I test drove both and now I have Tiguan 2.0 TSI in my garage. I love this car in every aspect! It is practical, comfortable, it is perfect family (2+1) car and a fun to drive in the same time. It is of course white with the R-Line package.

    Following points were not covered as part of Akera, which significantly distinguish mazda cx5 from others.
    1. HUD display: Its so nice and simple. Blindspot information is not only displayed on the mirrors, but shows on the display as well.
    2. Memory Seats: You can save the drivers seat position in memory, but it can as well be set to key. when some one opens door using that key, the seats are automatically adjusted to the number.
    3. Diesel Engine: Its turbo engine. But best thing, once you have reached the acceleration 0-100/110 kmph, the revs are under 2000. This coupled with perfect insulation, we hardly hear any noise on a level freeway. Not sure, about petrol car, i have not driven one.
    4. Bose Audio System: Adjust the bass and treble setting along with bose audio pilot and you feel like you are in a movie theater.
    5. Lane Assist: Set the setting in "early", the car tries to align the car in the center of the lane. we can feel it on your hands. Its like this, we think car is moving towards the lane, and the moment we think, we should turnleft, the car steering turns left, before you attempt. It looks as though miracle just happened.
    6. istop: car stops at signals and starts upon touching acceleration pedal. Best part is its very fast. you hardly discover that it stopped/started.
    7. Autohold: push the autohold, once you enter the car. once istop stops the engine, you can remove the feet on the pedal. the car stays as it is. This does not sound great, this is because, i m not good with explaining. This is really good.
    Drawbacks:
    1. No Android Auto, Apple car play. (I would have not used anyways...)
    2. traffic updates feature is good, but needs subscription. Not a biggy, as its less than 200 for 3 years. but still you need to pay for it.
    3. fuel Consumption is quite high than expected, especially in city.
    4. Some settings needs to be turned on/off everytime you step in the car. had they been embedded in the permanent setting option, it would have been better, for example, Autohold/istop. (Did not feel like a big thing to me).
    5. Lane Assist in advertisements sounds like this car is an autonomous sort of vehicle. But it isnt. get used to idea that this is lane assist, not autnomous. nevertheless, i loved lane assist as it is.

    Very good review indeed.....but I am still not able to decide which one to pick. Please help with your opinion.
    I am basically looking for a petrol as I do 12000 km a year. I like the looks and build quality of Mazda but on the other hand Tiguan seems more practical with sliding back seats...more techy with digital instrument, Android auto,wireless charging...all these features cx5 lacks. And then you don't seem to keen on petrol version of CX5...what would you pick?
    Also is automatic a good choice for these cars?

    When you look at the after sales costs the Mazda makes the most sense. The Tiguan has a $1000 service price at the 60,000km service. Mazda’s service costs alternate between $319 and $390.

  • @cshaopin
    @cshaopin 6 років тому +13

    Loved both cars. In the end I chose Mazda due to better after sales service, better customer relationship, cheaper spare parts and higher resale value. Lived in Malaysia and VW's customer service is really poor and lots of complains, resale value drops at least 50% after just a 2 years of driving, which is a shame because VW makes really good cars.

    Good review mate. I think if you compare the diesel I'd prefer the Mazda. Just. If Mazda had android play and a 360 camera, Mazda by a mile. However if you compare the petrol models I think the VW will edge out the Mazda.

  • @mahu142
    @mahu142 7 років тому +5

    I'd say it vice versa: VWs diesel engines are better than mazdas in terms of reliability, fuel consumprion and responsiveness. Mazdas diesel offer a lot of power, are quieter and are more clean.
    While on the petrol side, VWs petrol engines only shine on official datasheets. The power delivery is uneven because of turbolag and in the real world, they consume more fuel and are less reliable (got 2 broken turbochargers on my 2013 Audi A3). While Mazda is offering refined non aspirated petrols with real world fuel consumption as advertised.

    • @Roadjull
      @Roadjull 7 років тому +2

      Odd you should say that about the VW petrol engines. The 2.0 T is a workhorse, highly praised in both the GTI and the Tiguan 162. Actually I have yet to see a review criticizing this engine.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  7 років тому +2

      Hmm… we've independently owned a VW product with a TSI engine as a company car for a number of years and haven't had any engine issues, but no doubt no powertrain has a perfect reliability record.

    @4363654 6 років тому

    both are great cars, this is why we have them both. but I don't understand why mazda is less fuel efficient than tiguan, same goes to my experiences. Tiguan consumes less and that is the fact. But why? Mazda Skyactive as they like to brag has the lovest diesel compression ratio at 14:1 and is for that reason the most fuel and NOx efficient engine. Tiguan has this ratio higher at 16:1 but is more fuel efficient as a fact.

    Hi there, I own the new VW Tiquan TDI 110kw Highline 4Motion 2017 model here in NZ for the last six months months. And l simply love it!!
    Its very peppy, nice and easy to drive, has plenty of space, and has all the modern safety driving features you can think of. Best of all, it has this parallel auto self parking feature which makes it easy to reverse into a confine space, and also has 360° visual cameras all around the car. It is extremely economical on fuel use averaging 5.8 liters per 100 kms.
    In my opinion, it is a much nicer looking car all around when compared to the brand-new Mazda CX5 SUV!!
    However the car is not entirely without itscfaults. I have been having initial reliability problems with its infotainment system since purchase. For example, it switches on and off constantly, making it a pain to drive without the use of its reversing cameras and some of its more useful safety features.
    I have taken it back to the VW dealers for servicing six times in the last six months without being able to fix the problem successfully.
    However recently, the car was installed a new VW software update which l hope will solve all its infotainment system idiosyncrasies problems. So far so good.
    Incidentally your review here is "the best" l have come across so far in comparing respectively both the new 2017 VW Tiquan TDI Highline and the brand-new 2017 Mazda CX5 diesel SUVs models. Keep up the good work!!! 😀

We certainly enjoyed the upsides of the Tiguan that you describe - and I wish we got the 110TDI Highline here, as I actually prefer the 110kW version of the diesel drivetrain. Interesting to hear you've had some electronic niggles but yes, fingers crossed that the software update solves the issues. Let us know if it doesn't!

    Normally VW always wins the comparisons against competion like BMW X1 or Audi Q 3. Only a Skoda or Seat recently beat the VW, mind you they also belong to the Volkswagen group . the Tiguan is a great car.

    Here in Malaysia... VW only offers the 1.4 engine Highline and Comfortline.
    Mazda offers the full range.
    Here's the thing...
    Mazda's top of range diesel is priced cheaper than the VW 1.4 highline.
    I think Mazda is better value but undecided. What do you guys think?

    • @garajpoklah
      @garajpoklah 6 років тому

      even VW just bring in the 1.4 tsi.. in terms of performance, tiguan more powerfull than 2.4L petrol engine of Mazda.. also handling, Tiguan feel much better... i sudgest you test drive both and then decide.

  • @NZsarge1
    @NZsarge1 7 років тому

    I have to disagree on the engine in respect that the Diesel the default choice but it's just my opinion, I think the Diesel would pay if you seriously high mileages or do a LOT of towing otherwise in a SUV this size I'd take the petrol every time, if it were a Touareg or CX9 then I'd being looking at the Diesel.
    I'd personally take the Tiggy with the 132kw Petrol motor, I like them both though and wouldn't have a hard time living with the CX5 as long at it fit me (I feel the first CX5 is just a little short on space for me), they've done well with cabin ambience and quality on the Mazda although the technology is easily better in the Tiggy so yeah, the VW for me.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  7 років тому +2

      Good comments Sarge and yes the petrols are worth a look. Anyone in the market needs to get out the calculator and work out if the diesel will pay for itself over time given the driving they expect to do. However, it's also a personal preference - I don't like the aspirated petrols in the Mazda and would buy the diesel every time just for the sake of driving pleasure. All that torque is addictive.

      Since we started almost 11 years ago, i think 12 or 13 Mazda 5 and Mazda 6 in that timespan. Most of them reached 350k to 400k Kilometers without many Problems (We always sell them at max 400.000 km). We currently have 4 Mazda 6 but are thinking of buying the Prius+ if Mazda doesnt deliver a Hybrid anytime soon.
      edit: We only lost one Mazda 6 because of Engine problems in 2011, an that was at more than 320.000 km
