When I went to the gunshop years ago and was handling a firearm similar to this one, the guy at the counter calmly explained, "Yeah, it's not a shotgun... Shotguns have shoulder stocks... It's... it's a firearm that is capable of firing 12-gauge shells without a shoulder stock. Perfectly legal, but there is a distinction."

Since this video was made, the Shockwave has officially been designated “firearm - not otherwise specified”. And I’ve heard some states still ban Shockwave and other “non classified” firearms.
It has been made my understanding that because the "handle" is fixed to the firearm and thus not able to be fired from the shoulder, it is basically a big pistol, and therefore it is not illegal even with the small barrel length. Now, if someone were to affix a stock to it, it is then a shoulder fired weapon and would fall under the SBR category of the ATF rules. My main source of this is someone who did have to go through the paperwork to get a tax stamp to make his Shockwave an SBR by adding a stock.

It's a shotgun. Even a level 3 vest ain't gonna stop the kinetic dump when it takes 000 buck. Sure the buck won't go through, but it's still going to bust up whatever is under that armor (physics suck) due to the law of conservation of energy. And there won't be near the mess as a head shot

@@lizgayle14 read up what happens when ribs are broken by high velocity impacts. It generally looks like a 12 gauge filled with bone went off inside their chest. This is often lethal w/o penetration, and is always a fight stopper. Even w armor at indoor defense range, that's what's going to happen as that mass of shot has no time to spread

I have this exact same Mossberg, only it has a factory built Crimson Trace laser built in, and love it for home defense.
It would also be a felony to put a vertical foregrip on the Shockwave making it an "any other weapon".

I think the shockwave is definitely interesting but I can't help but feel skeptical of effectively wielding a shotgun without a stock. At the very least I'm skeptical of my ability to do so.
It's just a range toy and possibly a good defense option for someone camping or backing, unable to pack a full sized shotgun.
I have one and it's just a lot of fun, also it's very very easy to control so you should have no problem at all.
I think this would work out better in a 20 gauge. A little less recoil would be easier to manage with that configuration.

I ran lots of rounds and many different loads through mine. Haven't had any problems yet. Good little hallway sweeper. I keep mine loaded with bird , bird , 00 , slug. In closet on top shelf.
I have a 590 shockwave. You can get a ported barrel for it from brownells and a laser saddle. Makes it super easy to shoot.
With the right paperwork, nothing's illegal! :D

My local gun store sells a couple 12-13 inch barrel shotguns with pistol grips on it. And they have a bullpup version with the same lengths and stocks on it

It's because any weapon with over a 1/2 inch bore diameter without a sporting purpose is considered a destructive device.Most shotgun pistols are chambered in .410 shotgun shells. Which Are .454 which is under half inch. 12 gauge is .720 which is way over half inch.

I love the 590 Shockwave. If I was in law enforcement or some type of security that would be the one. The military testing it went through and passed is impressive. Instead I went down to Academy and bought a 20" Maverick 88 Security pistol grip. 7 full size rounds in the magazine. With the discount card it was $215 before tax. While the 88 is much cheaper (in price and quality) than the 590 it shares many of the internals and is very robust in its own right. Another "UA-camr" gave it a mini torcher test of feeding through 500 rounds as fast as they could - worked fine - no failure of any kind feeding it everything from 3" buckshot to 23/4 birdshot. They also added "cheap" budget "tactical" addons that are pushed on many sites. Most fell off during the first 100 rounds. The cheap flashlight made it into the 400 round range. Mind you this was firing without stop something like an ammo holder that you noticed was coming loose after 40-50 rounds you could probably correct and decide that Loctite was the way to go. They just kept shooting. The goal was to test the gun and the products.
For those searching the comments, the Shockwave is listed as a pistol grip firearm because it doesn't fall into the other categories (Shotgun, pistol) that it absolutely should from first glance. It's a smoothbore and over 26" so not a pistol, but at the same time it was designed not to be shouldered, so not a shotgun, per ATF categories.
The irony being if you sawed the barrel and stock off a normal shotgun to look like the Shockwave, well, you just committed a felony.
