    • @katiecall9112
      @katiecall9112 7 років тому

      The worry is impaction, while the crushed walnut is less likely than calcium sand, or regular sand (both are terrible), it can still cause impaction and really should be avoided. If you are going to use a lose substrate the best would be coconut husk. (:

      Mike Tytula thank you for replying. I live in southern Arizona and I know you've talked about some good breeders and shops in the area in the past, but I can't go to far from where I live. I've been looking online but most people I've talked to seemed sketchy or a little to pushy to make the sale. I'm not looking for any colour variety just an animal that needs a good home, unfortunately most reptile rescues in my area were shut down for unethical and illegal practices.

      ProZombies100 There is nothing wrong with using sand. He said that he has had his for 10 years and it looks like it is healthy. Personally speaking, sand works fine with my 2 geckoes and neither have ever impacted.

      @RogueoftheLeaf 9 років тому

      +ProZombies100 Pakistan is not just gravel, its filled with sand and hardened earth as well. Im not telling you that sand is the "best" substrate out there, if you think there is a single substrate that beats all then you are crazy. It all boils down to what best works with your individual reptile. Sand works perfectly fine with mine, I have never had any impaction problems with either of my Leo's and Ive had them on sand since day one of having them. And fyi I dont use sand for decoration, I could care less what the apeal is for me. Its all about what works with my Leo's.

      +Luke Bowler bearded dragobns do not live in deserts, they live on some sand but it is along with dirt and stuff. dragons lick everything around them, it is what they do, anhd when they eat sand they can become impacted and constipated, sometimes get worms too because of poop - ex, poop is sometimes liquidy, scooping will still leave that part. he/she eats that.... :? sand is not safe.

    Just a question, from a long-term beardie lover who researched weeks before getting my beardie, and continues to this day.
    Have you ever owned one? They are no beginner reptile. The petco i go to (not basing anything off this) says that they live 3-15 years, meaning people obviously suck at basic things for their care. Around the age of 2 or three, females start laying infertile eggs. They can become egg bound and die if they aren't allowed to lay them. They don't lay on certain substrates, which brings me to my next point. Lots of people use sand as a substrate. They don't live in big deserts. They lick everything, and this happens with many reptiles, And when they lick this and try to pass it later, they become constipated or impacted and they can die. Brumination is a reptile's hibernation, and while I don't know if any other reptiles do it - maybe people like you should look into it - they begin hibernating around the same age as I was saying before and people give them improper feedings, bathings, and heating, causing them to come out of this hibernation unhealthy, or dead. Some dragons go through this, and no matter how healthy they are and look after, they'll just die. Things like this show how uneducated the "reptile community" is. Kids, do your research before getting something like a dragon, or in fact any reptile. Expensive animals are expensive for a reason; to make sure little kids don't buy them and kill them. Don't just tell them this is a beginner. Parents will get them and give them improper care; not switching uvb bulbs after 6 months, using extremely small terrariums, not knowing the most important things. Although this seemed like a rant of something I could turn in to my english teacher, it was important.

    • @MikeTytula
      @MikeTytula  9 років тому

      +Joshua St Jean Beardies are actually a great beginner reptile. While most of that is true it doesn't mean they aren't a good beginner reptile and if temps are warm enough year around they don't go into a full brumation. They are also a very cheap beginner reptile which is why most people end up getting them with little to no research done before hand.

    • @joshuastjean8534
      @joshuastjean8534 9 років тому +1

      Mike Tytula Cheap?!
      Quality uvb bulbs are at prices around 40 dollars! The fixtures are nearly the same if you get them at a pet shop! Replacement of uvb bulbs is something people don't normally think of - how they need to be replaced every 6 months. Dragons grow quickly and can't live happily in a 20 gallon tank their whole lives! New terrariums aren't cheap! Ceramic bulbs, Heating lamps... my first dragon? altogether we payed 400$ on her! and tht was before we realized we were doing things wrong - of course, this was early on. Not cheap animals.

    • @MikeTytula
      @MikeTytula  9 років тому +2

      +Joshua St Jean prices are different depending on where you live but when it comes down to it a beardie is not an expensive animal... There are many reptiles that just the animal can be thousands of dollars. 400$ for everything is pretty cheap. It's relative though.

    • @joshuastjean8534

    Crested geckos still require live food, just not in every feeding. They are healthier with some insects in the diet. Lifespans of 20 years in leopard geckos are not so common, and nearing 30 are even rarer. Most will surpass 12 years though. Crested geckos can also live very long.

    I owned 2 bearded dragons that I was lucky enough to get as someone was donating to pecto so we took them in to our family. At first they were a huge hit with my friends and family but as time went on we started to understand why they were being donated, because it is a true fact that they get boring. They also require a lot of care and money on sand (which may have to be specific), food, water, weekly cage cleans, baths and a lot more.
    I would recommend them to someone who is looking for a non hyper pet, has no issue with bugs or cleaning, and can handle pet odors.

    Ive had a king snake, a corn snake, a crested gecko, 3 leopard geckos, and 2 bearded dragons, along with more green anoles and tree frogs than I can count. Out of all these reptiles/amphibians I can say 100% that bearded dragons make the best pet reptile. My boy Giz is about 4 months old and ever since he was the size of my pointer finger he was calm yet had a puppy like personality. He literally looks forward to getting out of his cage and hanging with me and my girl. Its funny, my mom is too scared to pick him up so when im not home and she feeds him he just sits at the cage door like a lil puppy dog

    • @thegreatlagi9974
      @thegreatlagi9974 8 років тому

      +Matthew Brown My Leo gecko has a lot of character. I'm sure beardies have character too. It depends on the animal's behavior. I've seen people with chill geckos and crazy ones. I've also seen beardies that are calm and others that are mean. Not all leos have character, and not all beardies have character. It depends. Sorry about these long comments, I just like leos a lot.
