My Giant Frog Escaped, so I Made Him a Mansion (African Bullfrog Paludarium)

  • Samson is back again, but in the way that I had planned. I built the enclosure for this six months ago, and I planned to complete it this fall. Sam had different plans, though. I guess that the clamps were no match for his brute strength, and he escaped!
It was disturbing the first time, but even more so this time. I thought I forgot to put them on at first until I saw how the lid was mangled. Needless to say, I didn't bother to film it because I was more concerned to get him back in the tank.
The next day, I got to work completing this new paludarium. I'm really pleased with how it turned out, and I love the new concrete technique. I'll definitely be using it again!

Looks nice Tanner good to see you move towards concrete. My brother did his countertops with the buddy Rhodes system it's good stuff. May I suggest a plant that grows FL. To AK. Eleocharis palustris as a pond guy you probably have seen it. It can be pruned if it gets too tall and makes a dense root mat that Sampson would no doubt love to dig through. You could even rinse the root ball and replant when a substrate change is needed.

Was he perhaps looking for a mate tho?
It's something pet owners to consider when and while keeping those pets. When I pick a pet, I try and keep in mind as mating is natural behavior and having access to it may be important for well being. Thus I go for community species of frogs that can mate peacefully and that excessive eggs can be culled/used as feeders for other pets (I don't like that part) 😬

I never thought I'd see one of these enclosures made with the artistic attention to detail one would give to a diorama. Amazing work!

I'm glad you re-captured him before he made it outside. We have enough invasive species in North America, and if something like that started breeding in the wild, who knows what native species could be driven to extinction.

My favorite thing about SerpaDesign over the years is that his work speaks for itself even before it's finished. It's already a masterpiece before it's done. I love your bioactive systems especially! I did one myself for my dumpy tree frog based on some recommendations from your videos and some extra research. It's been two years and I have a very happy and fat frog, I would say!

Whoa! It came out great! Seemed to match the natural habitat look like you were going for. Glad you found a good alternative over foam for the scaping! I hope Sam is happy with the upgrade!

im so glad i found this channel since you really show us how to build stuff ourselves. i recently rescued a 6ft+ 20y/o carpet python that lived in a barely large enough, empty vivarium. just getting him some spaces to climb and hide made him so much more relaxed and unwary of humans, it really makes a big difference when we think of the animal’s experience in their enclosure. i’m now thinking of getting that very concrete as i feel it would make a get addition for him. thank you for your video!

    Dammm That's a Big boy. That isn't a frog. That's a monster, he could challenge Godzilla. 🐸

It would be cool if you could add more of the frog's native ecosystem features, like actual mud, and other bugs and native plants from its home.

I'm only verse in pacman frogs, but the drip may stress him because it stimulates breeding season. He's probably trying to head to the frog bar to meet a lady Samson.
I absolutely love this frog ❤ he's my favorite frog on UA-cam! 😁

I’m not a frog keeper but that makes sense to me
He sees that dripping and thinks, “Oh, it’s raining! I gotta find some mates and start making tadpoles!”

I think the contrast of the rocks and sand are just fine. It's a lovely enclosure. Samson is very lucky.
