    Opinion.... high mileage capability isn’t worth all the crashes I would end up having on this tire!

  • @FrancoisPeens
    @FrancoisPeens 4 роки тому +8

    You mentioned so many negative characteristics during the test but at the end you call it a phenomenal 50/50 tire. The only positive it seems is the longevity which you said might be matched by the Tractionator GPS. But the GPS seems to out perform the K60 in all other tests. Based on this review, I can definitely write the K60 off my list of potential tire choices. Thanks again for a thorough review.

    • @chaparralmotorsports

      Yes Sir! Longevity, smooth highway ride, the unintentional "run flat" characteristics and ample traction off road do make this tire a phenomenal 50/50 tire. If you know the tires limitations and ride within them, such as riding slow and careful in cold and wet weather and airing down A LOT when heading off-road... This tire is the best value when it comes to price per mile. I did my best to express this in the video as it's kind of a "Yes and No" answer when it comes to the question if is a good 50/50 tire. Thanks for watching! - Kyle Oh, I personally do prefer the Motoz Tractionator GPS tire over the K60 Scout. Wears forever and sticks better. Win. Win.

  • @georgecook5120
    @georgecook5120 2 роки тому +1

    You say it's a great 50/50 tire, but I heard nothing but complaints in the video about its traction on and off road. I guess by 50/50 you mean 50 percent effective on both types of pavement?

      Not sure you know, but Heidenau makes the K60 scout in a cold compound version that works great in the rain and in the cold.. Just released in 2020(I believe).. Best for adventure bikes..

    The name of this tyre - compromise - you get a very good performance on road for a 50/50 tyre and a so-so performance off road for a 50/50 tyre. Off road you should throttle steer the bike with this tyre in (lean the bike on the side a little). It lasts a lot - I do well above 10k km on this - the down side though, it "squares off" quite bad if you go mainly on road (feels like a car tyre after 8-9 k km mainly on road). KTM 950, 75 kg, normal riding (commuting & weekend fun). I did soft sand, mud, rocks, dry tarmac, wet tarmac (with care) and made it all possible.

    • @chaparralmotorsports
      @chaparralmotorsports  4 роки тому +1

      Exactly! Great feedback. A compromise tire that does it all "well." I get 12k miles out of this tire and that is crazy. It works... -- Kyle & the Chap Moto Team

      @@chaparralmotorsports a quick workaround for that flat center strip would be to to do regular "cuts" with a cutter to connect those side blocks ;) I'll try that on my next set.

    Thank you and your team, Kyle, for all reviews you put out. This one on the K60 resonates with me to a T: I will never wear them again on my 990 due to poor traction in the wet, let alone in mud, too much of a compromise in my opinion. One upside...if you get a flat you can ride them for a long while. How do I know? I rode 20 miles with zero pressure in the rear tire. I had a feeling it was low but never zero.

  • @markus4692

    good review but I think the conclusion does not fit to what was shown. I was sure you will say "it's a good 80/20 tire but not a 50/50 tire because of the center strip". But not "it's a true 50/50 tire".

    • @chaparralmotorsports
      @chaparralmotorsports  4 роки тому +1

      I get where you are coming from Markus. IF Aired down to like 13 to 18 psi (which I run regularly) this tire is a beast off road. So Yes... 50% Off Road. Then there is the value per mile IF you are CAUSIOUS regarding cold, wet or painted surfaces. In warm weather this tire rips on the pavement! So.. Yes it's a good 50% on road tire with unmatched mileage. I did my best to discuss the issues.... before giving my wrap up. Thanks for your understanding. -- Kyle & the Chap Moto Team

    I have ridden over 12k on these tyres through Russia into Kazakhstan and back from UK. Your comments were spot on considering you crammed your test in over a few days where as mine was over a few months. They do last 12-15 k and perform exactly as you have reported. Best test ever with a very straight forward honest verdict, if you don`t wanna be looking for tyres in some unknown "^*: `stan then I promise these boys will bring you home with tread to spare (and perform better as the centre bar has worn forcing the edges to engage unless on Barny rubble!).
    Grip well on warm dry tarmac, careful throttle in the wet. Never let me down for grip and brill for plugging when punctured. Happy days.

    Interesting vid. Another aspect of the K60 Scout, rear tire comes without solid center strip on 130/80-17!!! I run K60scout on my XT660ZA for one season, got 10K km out of the rear, and here in Norway there's "always" cold... did not experience any issues with cold weather slippage, but then again I'm a carful rider and the Xt660 does not have all that power to break free.. :-) I think K60 Scout is more suitable for low/medium powered bikes.

  • @davebrown3117
    @davebrown3117 4 роки тому +1

    I have a KLR650 and the rear is a 130/80 x 17 and the K60 Scout does not have the centre strip down the middle of the tread. Nor does the 130/80 x 18 tyre. It seems if the tyre is 140 or wider, it does.
    I'm in Queensland Australia so the cold is not a big issue for me. The wet weather performance of my K60 Scouts are way ahead of the OEM Dunlop TrailWings that came with the bike when it was brand new. In my opinion, the K60 Scouts are more than twice as good as the TrailWings in all conditions. But that does not mean I go twice as fast, you don't get to be 58 years old by being an idiot.
    My KLR is my daily ride so I need good grip and wear for the commute and high mileage for the camping/fishing weekends too. I'm in the Brisbane metro area so it can take 2-4 hours, or more, to get to where I want to camp and fish. The tyres work for me but that does not mean I say they will work for you. If you don't like them, don't get them.

  • @LazyJack2003
    @LazyJack2003 2 роки тому +1

    No tire with that kind of center line is considered a real 50/50 tire. I think even Heidenau does not claim it to be. Many in Germany consider this more a 60/40 , if not 70/30 tire.
    It is very popular over here because it lasts so long for "normal" riders.
    In the end it is the same like with any compromise: chose it for its strengths, know its limits/weaknesses and act accordingly. Then you will have lots of fun with it. (That´s the same for a 50/50 tire on e.g. wet tarmac.)

    You end with a positive tone, but throughout the test you actually made more negative comments. Based on what I saw, I’m not sure I would buy the tire if I was slightly more interested in the offroad 50%. And that probably relates to the rear tire center strip and stiff,rigid, carcass.

    Running these on my R1200GS Rallye (2017). Handle well in rain, etc, but just too noisy, vibrating and stiff for me. If I would go on a world trip I probably run them due to long millage and puncture resistance, but for now I am going to install Michelin Anakee Adventure for my mainly road and some gravel trips in Europe. Unfortunately the new Dunlop Trailmax Mission is not available in Europe, cause these look promising as well.

    Having ran these tyres/tires for the past several years (they just won't wear out) I totally agree with this review. I finally decided to replace the front after a weekend riding in sandy conditions, it was just too hard to keep the bike tracking straight. I now have a Motoz RallZ with the K60 on the rear and aired down it does bite in enough to tackle some serious hill climbs and sand and I can still hang with sports bikes in the twisties as long as it's not wet but I think I'm going to replace it with something with more grip off road.

    Yes, the Heidenau K60 took me 24.000km and I could have gone a but more if I had to but: I didn't like the poor grip in mud or sand. On gravel I liked the drifting of the rear tire as it does grip nicely once you lean the bike over. That was a fun something to play with. The real bummer was the bouncing from one hard rock to another due to the hard sidewalls and stiff compound....easy to lose control in a hurry if you are not focused. Now it's time for something different. Thanks, great review and video. It shows it nicely.
