The Carpenters reference is spot on. Listening to the inversions and voicings tells you you are hearing someone who listened to a lot of mid seventies pop rock radio. Robert did indeed "listen well."

It let you know this can’t be confused with anything other than Seattle grunge at its finest. RIP, Scott, and thank you guys for everything you’ve given the world. Your music will live forever.
Stone Temple Pilots were a brilliant band. Purple was a huge album for me when I started playing and listening to music. The way it sounded was like nothing else. I will always love that record.

It is so great when an interviewer is very knowledgeable and also let's the guest speak. Saw STP on the Family Value Tour in maybe 2001. Robert had a big white cowboy hat and boots and just rocked the place on bass.

In my mind, they're right there with Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, REM, Nirvana and all the huge names. STP was brilliant.
absolutely the best STP song. never could have imagined it was inspired by rag time and bluegrass. amazing how songwriters come up with the best music.
STP was truly the quintessential rock band for the 90’s if we are talking rock following the traditional formula of classic rock artists. It’s almost as if they were so smooth that people overlooked their talent. Not a band that has one or two hits and 10 filler songs on the record. They had an incredible sense of melody and structure. In their defense a lot of critics were admittedly too harsh to them originally.
I had the pleasure and good fortune to see the original lineup of STP a year before Scott passed away. It is a cherished memory, and STP will always hold a special place in my heart. Simply one of those rare, killer bands that made music not just in passing, but songs that you would attach memories, events, and emotions to.

A well spoken gentleman. I think had he been more of a front man regarding interviews, press relations, etc., the band may have prospered more. I loved STP. It always seemed like the band was one OD from disappearing. Sure enough, and unfortunately, at least long term, it happened.
I love this guy to the moon and back. My favorite musician and songwriter EVER. Genius, no ego whatsoever, so sweet as a person. I will always cherish meeting him and talking Bossa Nova with him! ❤

That's 2 really great guys and great musicians right there having a chat. Love them both. Rick your love and knowledge of music and the people making it and bringing it out to the world in the way you do is truly appreciated. You're the best!
It's national Album Day here in the UK today, and I mentioned to my wife I wanted to hit the record store to pick up the first 2 STP albums on vinyl. She'd never heard me mention the band before and I got a little emotional explaining how an awkward teenage me used to do 2 paper routes and spent all the money on CDs and guitar tab books, and how the first song I ever taught myself was 'Creep' from Core and the second was 'Plush'. None of the band will ever read this, but thank you. Playing music has kept me sane and brought me so much happiness over the last 25+ years.
Plush was the first whole song I ever learned on bass. It was complex for me because I couldn't read sheet music and had to rely on tabs and just pounding my head against a wall until I finally broke down and started learning music theory. I had never played any instrument and to challenge myself with that bass part when I first started out was the best thing I ever did. I ended up learning so much more about music. Every song after that one seemed way less stressful as well.
I've loved STP since I was 9 in 1992. I've never grown tired of listening to them in 32 years. I learned new things i liked about them as I got older. The music just resonates that much with me

Those guys were the reason I started to play Guitar! LOVE every bit and piece!!!
See??? Bass players know stuff! Very impressive! Didn't know he was so involved in writing guitar parts. Core is my favorite STP album.
I had the pleasure and good fortune to see the original lineup of STP a year before Scott passed away. It is a cherished memory, and STP will always hold a special place in my heart. Simply one of those rare, killer bands that made music not just in passing, but songs that you would attach memories, events, and emotions to.
This guy is my favourite member of STP!! Great that we had an interview with him as it was always all about the singer and guitarist!
What a gentle soul that man is...and his level of greatness as a muscician is top notch..love everything about his writing ...saw his band 2 times in my life and he's by far one of the best bassist i've seen live ...just brilliant ...hail Robert !
I love the relaxed vibe of this video. It reminds me of the Kirk Hammet video: two talented musicians hanging out, talking about writing songs with friends. Super cool.
The way things are right now with the world we are in, it's so inspiring to listen to this thoughtful, off-the-charts talented musician explain the magic behind one of the great rock songs of our time. Thank you Rick for this interview.
First heard plush on headbangers ball at 2 in the morning. It was the acoustic version and to this day is my favorite song from the nineties.
R.I.P.
Scott
Layne
Chris
Kurt
Robert’s bass style is unique and unmistakable. Love this guy!
That song is a masterpiece
STP was the most musically interesting and varied band of that era.
STP and AiC in my opinion
Robert is one of my favorite composers and I didn’t know that til I found out he wrote most of STPs music. He is a legend in rock and roll history
One of the greatest bands ever. Never tire of listening to them.
AiC and STP ❤
Incredible vocalists and incredible musicians.
RIP Layne and Scott
Nice to hear at least one of the DeLeo's still kickin'. He appears healthy, as well. 👍
Love STP...so great...I miss Scott...such a bummer that he can't still be here for the STP reunion...RIP
This was amazing! Robert's music has been the score to the movie of my life. Thank you both for doing this interview
One of my favorite musicians. He seems like such a cool guy too.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone look more natural playing guitar. It’s literally an extension of him. And to hear them nerd out about music is awesome! I gotta learn that much theory!!!
I’ve seen STP live over a dozen times bc I knew one day would be the last. What I would give for one more show.
A well spoken gentleman. I think had he been more of a front man regarding interviews, press relations, etc., the band may have prospered more. I loved STP. It always seemed like the band was one OD from disappearing. Sure enough, and unfortunately, at least long term, it happened.
I loved this whole interview so much, one of my favorites from Rick for sure.
Real guitar music. Yes. 100%
Listening to STP taught me SO much as a young guitar player.
I love this guy to the moon and back. My favorite musician and songwriter EVER. Genius, no ego whatsoever, so sweet as a person. I will always cherish meeting him and talking Bossa Nova with him! ❤
The ability to take totally different genres and translate them into something totally new and unexpected is such a high mark for these guys. Well done.
That's 2 really great guys and great musicians right there having a chat. Love them both. Rick your love and knowledge of music and the people making it and bringing it out to the world in the way you do is truly appreciated. You're the best!
I have SO much respect for Robert. I loved hearing about his process in coming up with this epic tune. Great interview!
STP is always on my playlists. Even their later albums which weren't as well received were excellent.
No. 4 is criminally underrated
What a wonderful conversation, Robert sounds like a really humble guy, could listen to them chatting all night
What a clever song / amazing songwriting.
he aged so well
Gotta love that e flat 7 to fmaj progression, with that distortion and chorus its just sooo sweet. Always been a part of the song that just grabs u
I've loved STP since I was 9 in 1992. I've never grown tired of listening to them in 32 years. I learned new things i liked about them as I got older. The music just resonates that much with me
Collective soul and stone temple pilots or two of the most best bands for my taste they can get very heavy and turn around and be easy listening for lack of a better word ! RIP SCOTT
OMG...just two legends having a conversation about amazing music...so epic!!!!!
I haven’t been more surprised & impressed by a vid & a musician in a while. Robert is amazing. Didn’t realize he was that awesome on both guitar & bass. Very inspirational & impressive. 🤘🏻
*Robert
STP IS MY FAVORITE!!! THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER LIKE THEM. RIP SCOTT!!!
Listening to him talk is very soothing
This whole interview is awesome!
This was the song that I practiced for hours and hours on end when I first started learning how to play guitar properly in the 90s
This is a great interview, Rick. Robert explains his songwriting process very clearly and in a compelling way.
Stone Temple Pilots' is one of my all time favorite bands of the 90s. It's absurd how long people tried to write them off as Pearl Jam imitators- They deserve to remembered alongside the othe grunge greats. Awesome stuff as always Rick! And RIP Scott Weiland
Rick Beato is a gem. So glad to have found this channel!
