I imagine they'd go for the store brand or even the clearance sale items like going on the days meat is close to getting spoiled and are marked down (so you freeze it right away). that could save a good chunk to cover additional items.
I think below poverty level would do that but low income, especially those that take into account their health and potential risks would go for healthier options.

I always find it funny to watch this type of "surviving tips on budget" from USA as I live in Slovakia and the average yearly income is less than 10 000 euro. You are lucky if you get 100-200 euro savings at the end of the month.

Hello! It all depends on the “effort rate” a family is submitted to. From an outside perspective, these amounts seem astronomical (and they are nowadays) but then you need to consider the “cost of opportunity” of leaving in the respective country/state and other contextual possibilities (safety, environment quality, networking possibilities, job opportunities,…) Just an example, you leaving there allows you to create these pieces of content that have interest for the community who dream about SV and the sunny California. Organic milk is often no better than non organic so check first. Also buying frozen foods is cheaper than fresh foods but 90% as nutritious. Your berries for $3 for 125-250gm might be the cost of 1kg of the same item. DOnt always think organic is best as it is often a marketing ploy. You need to do your research first on the product and company.
I live in Washington state and $85 on groceries won't get you very far here. We have four people (2 adults/2 kids) in our household and after inflation we're spending $200-$300 on groceries a week. I feel like we're just bleeding money. 🙁

What about daycare if you want to continue working? We pay $2600 a month here so I can continue working. Imagine having two small kids. Formula, diapers, college fund, these all add up and aren’t free :(

To be honest middle and upper middle class in California is having a hard time with taxes and high cost of living. Yeah some might complain that is because they are living in an upscale residential area but if a middle, upper middle class family is living in an upscale residential area I'm 99% sure the do it for two factors: School District Ratings over 7+ ( Better Schools) and second more security since we know how bad is the LA crime wise. So to support my comments this is the reason why I think 90k in California for a family of 4 is not as hard as for family of 4 that because they want a better future, place to live and life for them they earn more, don't qualify for assistance and continue to have a constant tax hike.
And its why taxes and cost of living will continue to increase since more and more low income family assistance programs are being state funded and other welfare programs also created, it continues giving reasons to low income families to move to California.
I live a 20 minute drive into Manhattan NYC ... 90k would be a very comfortable living here, in one of the most expensive parts of NJ! I couldn't imagine living on my teacher's salary there!

+1 to it being combined income; also, wages are higher in the Bay Area. Oftentimes substantially so, especially for tech.
