Yeah, he was established. It's "accepted" in the Steam discussions for the game. It's way less than 30, there is not much of a community, the number of people who've done serious speedruns of it is probably still in the single digits.
In any case, it doesn't really matter. I've stopped playing it since then, and basically nobody cared to begin with.

Alex Penev also claimed a bunch of records of which there's no proof of it, but as far I can see from all the records I've checked, they're not too insane.
For instance, he still holds the WR in A Link Between Worlds' Rupee Rush in both worlds, which got insane amount of RNG involved. I'm only 18 rupees away from matching his record, but it takes a nearly perfect RNG from the fountain to even get that 453 or higher (435 is the highest proven score by me)
And according to the birthday thread at the mario kart forums, he's pretty old. Not sure if he's truly that old or is even still alive, but I'd appreciate if people can research about the history of his activity over the years.

I hold the world record for the most current #1 world records in speeding. I got mario in 2mins flat. I got battletoads in 10mins, I got OoT no glitch in 30 seconds. The list goes on but it just starts to sound like bragging. And oh I beat tod Rogers faked dragster score.
Who am I? Just a guy you should trust on the internet. I'm not in it for the fame, it's all about the bragging

rwhitegoose, Clark here -- just wanted to confirm that your account of my Berube stance is accurate! I really appreciate the journalistic fidelity mate.
That Berube "flame war" thread created a lot of misunderstanding, the most upsetting of which was that my assertion of any opinion = political "power play". As you clarified, it was just my would-be vote.
If a claim is under scrutiny and proof policy (nor protocol for resolution) isn't clear, I believe the input of active/skilled runners is most valuable. Moot point though; counsel system works.

I find speed run culture so interesting... because there is that part of me that likes "Who gives a shit? Who cares how quickly you can beat a game?" and then you see the level of passion these players have for it... that they get crazy down to the very science of it nailing everything frame perfect right... On that I can appreciate, the method of it. It almost makes me wanna get into it, but that's a helluva lot of dedication.

I don't speedrun games, rather I engage in completion and power gaming, particularly in RPGs, with my goal being to play, complete and concept prove as many optimized endgame strategies in as many RPGs as I can, ambitiously all of them. I've been working on this for about ten years, and as I work on my own goals, I love seeing the passion players and content creators like this channel put into their own fields, and am always reminded of how good it feels to be passionate about what we do as gamers. What's up ? I found your speedlore episodes very entertaining and I'm very impressed with your knowledge about the history of the elite and goldeneye speed running in general, you obviously have a passion for the subject. I was just looking at the elite rankings page and I would like to see a series where you go through the top ranked players and do a sort of profile piece/history of the players as nearly every single person seems to have a unique personality and interesting backstory. Such a fascinating community full of huge characters. Maybe you could even Skype call / interview the ones you know personally. Ask Wouter about being surpassed as top dog. Ask everyone if they remember the infamous streets 1:12 MRRL run !?! I'd love to see a Karl Jobst profile, an Illu retrospective, stories on Clemens speed bullying, a Steven zwarties interview about the Aztec controversy. Please let me know if you see this comment, and it is something you could/would want to make. Due to your passion on the subject I believe you'd be the best man for the job ! Anyways cheers for the multiple hours of entertainment so far ! Let mrhirule gamers martyrdom not be in vein ! Cheers. J

Honestly, for all the work Kent did for yall, he should have been Honerary #1, even if he never actually ran a game. It takes a lot of work to update old sites like that, so like you said, thats a good legacy to have. Building a community with his site.

    • @rjc276
      @rjc276 5 років тому

TheMightyBiscuit that’s reasonable however he didn’t create the site; it was started by Iacopo Sorce with collaboration from Rene Elsaesser. Kent took over its admin in about 2001 from memory. He was always a really nice guy online, and put in plenty of work before handing it to Nicholas Harvey I believe. I agree with Goose that that’s the positive part of his legacy but it also doesn’t explain the bogus 1080 times (there were multiple).

Coming from the Super Mario Kart community, where "live proof" is one of the strongest ones you can get, I can say that him being validated by, Wessels, MJ and KVD gives him a lot of credit. I don't get why he would lie after being so successful and proving his worth to numerous different people and communities. Also, if I'm going to lie it won't be about a "25 untied PR on a very grindy game such as GE.

I have a very vivid memory of my older step brother telling me to finish Devil May Cry on the Playstation 2 as fast as I could when I was about nine. I remember getting a sub 50 time without any sort of genuine strategy in terms of hitting skips or using holy waters. Only By hitting red orb pockets and optimizing my pathing, not that I knew what any of that stuff was back then.

In Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympics, 2010 Ds, there was a runner who got a lot of good records. Some of them were incredible, but other were excepcional. Since there was no traidition of recording records back then, all we have are his submissions to the online DS leaderboards (not even the WFC leaderboard, but another one that the community created aftwerwards). Not even his name is known, the time displayed was made by a "Deleted Username"
Recently we have TASed some of the events, and one of his records is, I kid you not, 1 milisecond away from the theoretically perfect time. It really makes you wonder whether he was a TASer just faking his scores, but then again, other records of his were not so hardcore, so who knows.

You only have 92k subscribers??? That's a high number but I expected you to have over 300k because of your video quality

Personally I believe that Berube's Dam record was legitimate, but it should not have gone on the leaderboard for lack of video evidence.

When Goose says he's going to dig into the deep lore to find out more about Steven Zwartjes among other things. All i can do is picture him wielding a whip and wearing a leather hat. Goose to me is an archaeologist, but for speedrunning.

Yep, all of the above are totally not a part of the USA. Gee, Indiana sure is my favorite country!

I once did a 1:11.7 WR on Blizzard Passage on Nokia Rally 3D, clutching a glitch that allows you to start the race about 0.8 seconds before "Go". Over many hours of play, I only saw this happened once.
Playing on an old Nokia phone, however, video proof was not available.

What to comes to mind when I think of (most likely) legit runs. Is manocheese. A legend in the dk64 community. He took the record for any% down to 45 minutes. But only once did he submit proof. He did a similar thing with oot back in the early days of bottle adventure.

It's a shame that outside of the melee target test community NeroY isn't that well known. I don't think he ever showed video proof, but he did detail some strategies he used which were completely different to what other people were doing. I wonder what happened to him.

The old way of speedrunning before the recent paradigm shift was a word of mouth sort of thing. It was, as you said, about legends. The new paradigm is a focus not on great stories to tell but rather on who can live up to those kinds of stories. It's for this reason that I think your concerns about revisionism are well founded.
Likely the best thing to do is to simply treat these legends as what they are, merely legends, instead of genuinely documented world records. Legends make for great stories to tell and mountains to climb, they don't have to completely go away just because they don't fit into the new paradigm of speedrunning.
That said, they do need to be separated from the world record runnings in an official sense. There's strong merit to the notion that "a world record without a record is just a world". I mean, "record" is in the damn name of the thing that people are competing for. That needs to be taken seriously just as much as the legends of old shouldn't be forgotten.

"I've been trying to get that old record removed for years" sounds a lot like "I lied and got caught red handed, so I'm trying to save face."
