I do feel like you take my position as being directly against what you guys are doing, which they're not. I'm not actively against content creation or anything like that, all I'm saying is that I'm *for* the people who don't want that kind of responsibility, and speedrunning works just fine without it. The comment at 27:17 made me think that you think I actively dislike you guys making content, which isn't true at all. This is great stuff, and so are all the speedrunning UA-cam channels that've grown in size the last year or so, I was just trying to be a voice for myself, being someone who doesn't really want to do anything other than do runs as a hobby. I left a like on the video about halfway through, so the comment at the end threw me off lol. I wasn't trying to actively bring you or anyone else's opinion down, I was just trying to bring my own up as being an existing and valid opinion.
Torje but was mhgs video talking to the hobbyist, or the hardcore? if youre a hobbyist, than why even give a fuck? if youre hardcore, than of course you would want to make you community better, which judging the response to mhg, it sorely needed. the passerby hobbyist shouldn't even be in the conversation, and the hardcore would like it if you didnt compare their passion to, 'just a hobby'. just to reiterate, you can speedrun as a hobby, but not everyone who speedruns considers it just a hobby
I respect your right to speedrun as a hobby. I personally didnt have an issue with what you said. If the top guys wanna make it bigger then they can do so
Didnt mhg get the short end of the stick there? Talk about being attacked for your opinion, when he was fucking doxxed and was harassed until the end. He was fucking exiled from this community
If Torje never cared than why comment, you have to care to some degree if he bothered to comment on the fucking vid. If he felt bad, thats not mhg's fault either. He was addressing the community that was there and if Torje doesnt want a part in it than whatever, but speedrunning wouldnt grow without those content creators. Mhg's point is still valid, but Torje has no obligation to make content, it was the equivalent of casting a line into the water to see if someone would bite, instead he got dragged into the water
@Eevel Funny part is, is that you don't even know why you're mad, you're just pandering to a collective outcry of immature temper tantrums. Either that or you just don't use the noggin much. You want a real asshole? Try looking in your mirror.
I'm glad you made this video Goose, it just spotlights my experience in trying to learn speedrun strats. Most are so poorly documented it hurts. That's the sole reason i started Son of a Glitch, to show how some of the tricks in speeds runs are pulled off. Great video man, all the best. Andy
"Most are so poorly documented" What game are you running? Because if it's not a well known game like SM64, OoT, then don't expect a full plate of food handed to you. But even then, I've seen well documented tutorials of a game that not many people run. Also, have you tried asking in twitch chat for advice?
The fact that he was so attacked by the "faultless" speedrunning community kind of proves how valid his points were, its unimaginable that in this day and age people still can't see through the faulty nature and truth behind such a mob mentality, but here we are
The fact that 32% actually agreed what was done to him was a good thing actually made the community look worse especially since it was using heavily suggestive wording to encourage voting no.
Essentially destroying someone's online life and one's mental wellbeing for disagreeing with his opinion is what makes me lose hope in people. Where is the decency?
I mean the speedrunning community is notoriously toxic and hateful even today, the video claims him as a martyr but largely people just kind of looked at it and said 'yeah whatever' from the community. They are just as bad and awful as they were before, it sucks because Speedrunning is an entertaining approach to gaming that has been catching a lot of people's attention. But the communities don't seem to actually want new members and players. Point being, nothing could surprise me from the speedrunning community anymore.
The main issue, in my mind, is that being competitive for world records is obviously going to encourage those in power to not try to encourage new competitors for their crowns. They’ve stopped having fun with games, which is what games are meant to be. I could’ve been a top speed runner myself, but I chose to play a bit more casually (still hardcore in my methodology, getting multiple 100% files on multiple games, but not caring about time or accolades.) To those particular speed runners out there (they know who they are, and GHC,) lighten, the fuck, up. You aren’t gods because you can sub 1:30 a game intended to take 8 hours, you’re skilled, but not a god. MHG, if you ever see this, I hope you’re doing fun runs of OoT randomizer, since that’s what I’ll be doing, and it’s way less toxic than the spider that Billy left for Apollo, much less the majority of the speedrunning community up to this point.
The tweet from the person that said they failed to understand why leadership is important in a community was just as shocking. I think it perfectly sums it up. Those that lashed out at him don't care about the community, only what they do and the bubble they live in. What's really interesting is how they simultaneously distance themselves from this so-called branding of speedrunning and reacted like rabid fanboys by attacking someone who badmouthed their beloved brand, all while believing they had to fight for their right to not care about a community in the first place. It's so bizarrely selfish and self-destructive that it only adds weight to the words of criticism and observation, however unfair they may seem.
These are people who are so brave online because in real life they wouldn't say a damn thing. You can say anything you want when you can hide and nobody knows who you are.
SummoningSalt has also inspired a few videos by experts in specific runs to make videos in a similar format to his World Record Progression. AverageTrey's Mario Sunshine breakdown is downright epic in scope, and could serve as a blueprint for anyone who wants to start running that game.
Damn! I didn't know about this story. Thanks a lot for sharing such an important moment in speedrunning history with us man, I hope MHG is doing great in his life, he really seemed like someone who cared about others, and that's no bad thing.
MHG was a guy looking to exploit the speedrunning community for his own personal gain. He really didn't care about the state of the community at all and his actions probably had very little impact on the speedrunning community. This video completely overlooks other people at the time who were calling for change in a more positive way.
@@pieromancer909 It's funny you mention him making assumptions about MHG's motivation and directly after proceed to make assumptions about his. I'm an outsider but I reckon he's right; antagonizing a community like MHG did isn't going to make it change itself. Pushing for change in a positive way just seems a better way of getting it to happen. It's something Goose seems to understand with most of his content so this was quitte surprising
What i hate the most is how elitist speedrunners can be. like, "yeah, you can learn, but i don't teach you how, and i will make fun of you when you fail". I really like what Salt, Apollo, and the others including you are doing
@Reno Thomas He comes off as a lunatic but let's not pretend there isn't a big group of GDQ insider political cliques pushing "diversity" above actual sport.
That's weird. I think AGDQ still is awesome. There were many really good runs this year with interactive and funny runners. Bawkbasoup, Covert_Muffin, puwexil, Distortion2 and MitchFlowerPower to name a few. Also, of course, Andy and Ivan.
@john m Seems like what you are saying I can't allow people who aren't straight to be allowed the same rights and freedoms as me or I might turn into a snowflake
Psilocyb Taking out Todd Rogers was awesome, and Summoning Salt's videos have been amazing. I've shown all my friends and family his videos and now they understand and appreciate speedrunning!
SpeedRun.com does have an excellent list of options for recording and broadcasting the games though. I ended up with OSB (? Is that the acronym ?) and have had a lot of fun with that even though I haven't went live with it. If there were any complaints I'd say there were too many options and the list of resources could have benefitted from either screenshot of the program or some iconography but that's such a minor complaint. More of a quality of life issue than anything.
Great story, I'm thankful for MrHyruleGamer now and what he did to improve speedrunning for all time. And you Goose, for documenting and telling these stories.
I’m a Ranked Melee player in my state. I have a giant game collection and a 1500$ CTR BVM. I love watching speed runs. But seriously the reason I don’t speed run is the community. Speed runners and speed run drama have continuously killed my desire to speed run any game. Because i know if i do i’ll wanna talk to someone about it and I don’t wanna talk to the community. I guess the Smash community just spoiled me.
Smash can have stupid bullshit like that as well. Like all that Salem stuff recently. Not picking on smash specifically but people, especially online can get proper anal about their shit.
Geeeee8 - Yeah, but if you look at the prominent members of the Melee community (the people he specifically attacked) they mostly responded by disagreeing with him and poking fun at him. They even still pal around with him regularly when at events. That's a far cry from the flaming and doxxing that happened to MHG.
I think it was more that speedruns are amazing and they build up bandwagoning and trying to live in a fantasy, fandom world rather effortlessly. The people who break that image of perfection for the many kids who enjoyed such videos created a strong negative reaction. Kids are a surprisingly negative force online.
I'm not part of the community, but if I had criticisms like those levied towards me, I can't picture myself getting butthurt over it. They seemed pretty constructive to me.
I remember when this video came out, the biggest surprise I had was why there weren't more videos like this. Him and Apollo Legend were some of the only people making what I guess you'd call "meta" videos about the community. Real shame that the community suppresses negative criticism this much.
Goose, the reason I like you and your content is not because I always agree with you, it's because you are respectful and thoughtful about how you approach concepts. You create an environment which encourages healthy discussion and discourages argumentative behavior. On this topic, though, I agree with pretty much all points of discussion. It's a shame that, in the end it took the loss of a person's fun and enjoyment of something that seemed a big part of their life in order to cause a cataclysm. Thanks for the hard work you do.
People need to realize that sometimes the biggest criticizers of a community, show, game, event or otherwise are also sometimes the most passionate fans of it. Not every form of criticism is done out of malice, but in hopes that people may stop looking at somethings with such rose tinted glasses and invoke a change in the thing that they are giving criticism about so it doesn't go down the point of no return. People tend to take these forms of criticism so harshly and hostile because they attach their very being into the thing that is getting criticism and feel its a personal attack on them which is why they are so quick to name calling and death threats and doxxing. It's hard to change yourself but sometimes one needs to to learn how to truly grow and develop.
In the Kingdom Hearts community, a UA-camr by the name of Bizkit does a lot of stuff like guides on boss fights, tech and other stuff in the Kingdom Hearts games, i.e the data org boss fights guide. Because of him, I learned how to do all the cool tricks in the game I already loved, making me play the game more and love the game more. People who make videos like that are what got me into speed games. When you started making the lore videos, RWhiteGoose, I started following and loving Golden Eye, a game I never would have even glanced at otherwise. And for exposing me to the speedrunning community, and what is now one of my favorite games, I thank you. :)
Both bizkitz (bl00dy too) are both prime examples of social speedrunners. Even before speedrunning, they each were already social with their audience through playthroughs and guides, and live streaming has only exemplified it. Bizkit's guides are really the only reason why Gummi missions in kh2 aren't terrible anymore, and as of late bl00dy is playing through other video games live on stream, almost as if he didn't speedrun in the first place. Both are very good examples of social speedrunners and the kh community as a result has been very positive and similarly in touch with each other.
One speedrunner I have big respect for is Carginogen. He's running all these great classic games such as the resident evil series, not just speedruns but challenge playthroughs as well. He doesn't just stream on twitch he uploads well edited videos to UA-cam with chilled out, concise and entertaining commentary that explains how to pull off the tricks he does and also gives you some background lore. It's so much more interesting that just watching a standard speedrun, it really makes you want to play the game. It's just my opinion but if more people were like him I think speedrunning would be a much more inviting place. This was a really interesting video, right or wrong the man deserves an opinion and the way the mob pounced on him really emphasises his first point. Respect for what you did for him.
I think the key would be more social events between runners. The whole thing that SimpleFlips is doing with the "10vs1" M64 challenges is a great example. There's banter, there's tension, and it's all in good fun. And what's really cool is seeing all the 'casual' youtubers slowly getting better as time goes on. It sends a great message to the general audience, that speedrunning CAN be fun and that anyone can learn how. That it's not just reserved for the the super meticulous and dedicated, but can be done casually as well as competitively. Almost like fighting games in a sense; you can play casually with your buds, semi casually with enthusiasts, on and on all the way up to world class level depending on how far you want to take it. Encouraging more friendly races between speedrunners would be a good start. Self imposing challenges on each other for fun, setting up "speed running tournaments", or simply getting together to create a dialogue on what they think would be the most optimal pathing in some relatively untapped game. The key is to get speedrunners to interact with each other more. It's such an intimate and solo thing as is, just getting them together to shoot the shit while speedrunning would go a long way in making speedrunners more relatable and 'human'. Also it's a lot harder to rage when someone you know is literally in earshot. This would also be good for things like SGDQ. They would have an easier time gauging who is comfortable around others or who synergies well to create an interesting dynamic for the couch commentary. At the very least, it gets some of the more awkward runners more acclimated to the situation and helps them come out of their shell a little. I mean, we're throwing a bunch of socially awkward people up in front of a huge stage, of course they would be nervous and flub up on conversation. This is a good way to help promote a a good face to the public as well as a more healthy social life for those that are particularly shy. The only other thing I could think of is getting some dedicated announcers to hype up SGDQ runs like announcers do for fighting game tournaments, but that would be a little difficult to pull off and would require a ridiculous amount of speed running knowledge on multiple games from said announcers. Maybe it would work better for the races they have to generate hype. Anyway, just my thoughts.
Hey Goose I’m so glad I found your channel sometime in the last few weeks. You’re so great to listen to and watch, as we hold very similar views about society it seems. I’ve always wanted to get into speed running, specifically of Majoras Mask or Doom II, but between college, full time work, and being a father, I just don’t have the time to learn these games.
M Y F R I E N D S... I've never played 1 second of GE or any game that is talked about on this channel but im so hooked... watched literally 10s of hrs. Goose is ... T R U L Y A L E G E N D
I don't like speedrunning. It's not my thing. I usually get bored when I try to learn how to speedrun a game. I absolutely love watching speedruns and speedrun related content. It's so damn fascinating to me. Speedrun content creators, please, keep creating that speedrun content.
this is me. I dont have the time or drive to do speedrunning myself, but I do like watching their content on how they try to improve themselves and their times to get better and better.
People hate being called out in general and instead of listening and taking on the criticism as an adult, they prefer to backlash and ridicule, passing the buck to someone else. It takes a strong person to stand up and go against the grain, standing up for what they believe in. We all wanna move in the right direction, where everything is accessible and available to everyone, whatever medium that may be. Once the tantrums have subsided and people can think clearly again, was it worth it? Did MHG deserve all that hate? Absolutely not. Those who relished in his public shaming will get what is coming to them. What goes around, comes around.
I'm watching this on Good Friday. How appropriate! I never actually saw the original video or heard about its ensuing drama. Thanks for the history lesson! Love your work Goose!
This video gave me the motivation of making my first tutorial/guide ever. I run a small game, with not so much people playing it, and I wanted to make it easier for the newcomers. So thanks Goose.
I largely got into speedrunning through ALTTP Randomizer Race youtube VODSs. This in turn, lead me to watching live runs and meeting people on Twitch. I took up the 12 Hour Challenge given to the speedrun community earlier this year. My game was A Hat in Time. I'm now picking up Super Mario RPG starting today. This is all thanks to content creators. I'm now a part of a pretty close community of runners who talk daily and aim to encourage eachother to push for new heights. Each and every person in this community is important in one way or another. If you're just another name on the leaderboard I strive to pass, you matter to me. I appreciate everything that this community is, and I'm glad it's growing. Thanks for this, Goose. You got my motivation up. LETS GET THOSE PBS BOYS!
I've been watching your videos for a minute now and just discovered this one. I must say this might be my favorite video I've watched of yours. You truly do inspire a certain amazement to speedrunning which I quite admire and I look forward to each video you release!
You killed this video bro 👏. This has so many values that can be useful across the board in anything people are excited about and want to share. Thanks for some inspiration
A point about the speedrun hobbyists... People are absolutely allowed to just speedrun as a hobby, and not take it seriously. Youve no obligation to turn your hobby into something more popular. Millions of people around the world just play tennis for a bit of fun and exercise, its made a global tv sport by the 1% at the top who looked to make it a career. The same here. Speedrunnings lifeblood is the top runners of the big games and perhaps the routers\strat finders who made the discord tutorials. Much of the criticism of lack of leadership stems from simply the kind of people who tend to get into speedrunning. Theyre not generally interested in public leadership beyond their own community.
Daniel Edward how is that a rebuttle at all? if professional speedrunners want to make their community better, why even include the passerby hobbyist that doesnt really take it seriously? mhg was obviously talking to the speedrunners that grind for 100s of hours in a game to go a sec faster, not the people who do it casually. he didnt even bring up the hobbyists in his original video, that commentator did.
I absolutely love your videos. I've been watching speedruns since 2012 (I got stuck on a casual playthrough of Dark Souls and found speedrunning) and over the past couple of years watched less and less but kept coming back to it. Then I started getting suggestions in my UA-cam feed more this year after I checked some AGDQ vods and then found people like gladJonas and yourself and many others - I started watching more and more content and runs and now I'm finally learning a run myself. I love the people who do go out of their way to make content, but others who just have fun streams are the bread and butter. Maybe I'm not deep enough in to the community, maybe you're right this last year has changed things, but so far I love it.
Thank you Goose, I'm into the channels you mentioned around half a years ago, I love how they introduced speedrunning as people used that mentality to create communities having fun yet competiting among the people, not escalating lack of self-control, overly grandiose, dehumanizing others and other asocial traits, not just speedrunning, but in any other situations too.
What an awesome video..... Sharing this for sure. Passion and love for the things we do (whatever they are) is something we should always share and talk about.
Speedrunning can be a hobby, but it revolves around competition. Many great runners in the past have stopped pursuing records once they got the WR, and without new people coming in to challenge them, speedrunning could become a thing of the past. A community that doesn't build anything is going to fail, so the idea that speedrunning doesn't need outreach, that it can just be something that a few people do with their own time, is inherently flawed.
As someone who got into *watching* speedrun content last year I have to thank you for making this video and MHG for helping improve the community and inspire the community to put out more content. Cuz I always tried beating games as fast as possible, but due to personal circumstance, financials really (homeless at 18, been trying to get on me feet forever now), can't speedrun. But I really enjoy the strategies, the skill it takes, the innovation. So yeah this situation is probably the reason I watch so much speedrun stuff thanks.
Kind of a bad look for the speedrunning community... anyone who gets that fussy about that video is soft as tissue paper and has some rather serious underlying insecurity issues. Really just proving his points with a response like that. I disagree with most of what he said about GDQ in that I don't feel the awkward should be excluded from events and overall the event has been good for speedrunning, but who the heck cares? This was a non-event, grow up and get over it.
I've watched a lot of GDQ and I'm not sure what you're talking about really... I'm sure that among them are gay people and so forth (I recall one transgender person who ran two or three games), but what on earth does that matter? It is an exceedingly varied cast of characters with some being charismatic and funny, others being laconic and introverted, and still others being ornery or awkward; this is something you could say for just about any hobby, sport, or community in general. The one thing that links all of them is a passion for speed running, and frankly that's all that should really matter. That they raise lots of money for cancer research in the process is just icing. My post was specifically referring to those who harassed and attacked Hyrule for what was some fairly reasonable criticism... Unless they say something unrepentantly disgusting (he most certainly did not), I really dislike when people are ganged up on and ostracized simply for voicing an opinion that does not completely conform to the "acceptable" group think of the moment. If they'd simply disagreed it would be one thing, but to essentially exile a person and threaten him by revealing personal information for something so innocuous is truly pathetic.
Funny how you talk about safe space. Mr hyrule gamer couldn't handle the backlash so he now resides in a cave away from society. What did he expect, a warm welcoming? It's speedrunning, the sacred underground cult of gaming that normal people think is stupid so of course the community is gonna be toxic towards his criticism.
You and the creators you mentioned have done a lot in the past 1-2 years to make it easier for people to get into it but it honestly has a long way to come. I randomly dove headfirst into speed running about a week ago after one of summing salts videos got recommended to me. I have since watched every video he’s made as well as a lot of other creators. You guys have peaked my interest enough to trying it but as someone who comes from playing FPS games at a very competitive level the community and speedrunning as a competitive aspect of video games is missing out by lack of good content creation. The speedrunning community’s talent pool is also kinda held back by this imo, people don’t necessarily need tutorials to be able to be good but able to get on an even playing field quickly. A lot of really good gamers that don’t play retro games 24/7 would probably never pick up speedrunning bc it will take them a year just to learn how to do the run. Why would I learn to speedrun a game if I couldn’t even be competitive due to lack of knowledge when I can be competitive in another game or subset of gaming that actually has content created for it to help speed up the learning process. If speedrunners really believed they were the best in the world they would want everyone to do it bc it only raises the bar. Just look at competitive overwatch as toxic as that community is there are streamers that literally just coach people and don’t play themselves. It’s not apples to apples but you know what I mean
I think critique is fair game and you shouldnt be forced out for trying to point out a cultures flaws. I would say though that I didnt much like the cringe compilation videos The speedrunning community tends to attract people who can be very socially awkward, shy, introverted and sometimes on the autistic spectrum. The cringe compilations were essentially making fun of their awkwardness. An extreme metaphor would be a bully pulling down the pants of the nervous kid in the playground so that everyone could have a good old laugh. I fully understand their distaste of being put in cringe compilations, its not that they were more popular then their streams necessarily, rather it was making money off humiliating them.
I understand where you're coming from. But I went from someone who didn't even know speedrunning existed until UA-cam recommended an Apollo speedrun cringe compilation, to now having binged through every Summoning Salt video covering the topic, I think some we owe those videos some credit for expanding awareness for the hobby. To expand on your metaphor, the bully pulled down the pants of the kid while he was on the playground collecting rocks. This brought a lot of negative attention and humiliation to the kid at the time, but it also showed alot of people how interesting rock collecting was. And due to this, there's more interest in rock collecting now more than ever.
RWhiteGoose - A year ago my interest in speedrunning would've been happenstance at best, despite gaming for over twenty years myself. But I find myself taking the time to offer my attention to your content on a regular basis. If MrHyruleGamer's criticisms proved to be the catalyst to change the community from an infallible clique into something that provided people to people an appealing way to observe, interpret, and enjoy speedrunning as a whole then its importance cannot be overstated. My presence here, however insignificant, is proof that the efforts of you and others are working to make this community a better place for an increasingly diversified audience. Keep it up
Goose is absolutely the opposite of a 'tabloid' - wonderfully thought out discussions, vocalising both sides of each argument and delving the merits of either. Love each video, looking forwards to the next lore!
Tbh about a year or 2 ago speedrunning seemed like such a daunting community to even get interested to, but because of videos like this and those of summoning salt, I saw how exciting and unique the speedrunning community is. I love videos like this, that prove how amazing speedrunning can be
I saw his video when it came out and was recommended with other videos around it, and I found it mostly agreeable. But because I was not a sub and I am only a seldom viewer of some speedrunning content, I had no idea how big that video was. It is insanse to me because I thought of it just sorta agreeable mostly and though so would most other people too, instead of getting so mad over him for critique. Fuck these days people should realize that getting mad is first sign of maybe there is some meat in that punch you felt that bad that you have to retaliate.
As a person that only really watch cringe compilations when it comes to speedrunning the treatment of MHG makes me think that speedrunning deserves the autistic reputation they get if that's how they treat someone trying to better the community.
@@teaz3139 I know right, its almost like these neuro typicals think that we lack emotions, damn mouth breathing ignoramus' "normal" people desperate need of education.
I was a part of the discord server since the practical beginning of it. It was a real group of people who enjoyed speedrunning, and we all were good friends, it hurt to have something crazy and unnecessary like that happen to it. On the other side of the coin, I'm insanely grateful for this shift in community its brought, and that there are people like you, MHG, and others that aren't afraid to stand for change where they see it is needed.
Where's the lisp homie? Oh, it's still there. Just not in text. You should fix that. I almost didn't recognize you ;p The alpha lisp is the source of your power. Remember that.
Honestly what I have heard of GDQ banning people, the hate that narcissa gets for living her life how she wants, and overall toxic behavior towards creators like you is why I have been turned off from the community. The rpg limit break content got me through a really rough spot in my life and the older gdq vids helped me get through my engineering degree so what is happening to the speed running community has affected me as a content consumer. I get that speed running is a hobby but at the same time it is a hobby of content creation. Runners like zoast get this, they make guides and comparisons, breakdowns and the like. I personally am very unlikely to watch a run without commentary of any sort. (Which admittedly zoast has a lot of >_>) but I suppose it's because I see the individual WR runs as transitory as it is likely to be WR for maybe a year or two tops. The act of achieving the record is second to the mastery required to get it and frankly that mastery is better shown in commentary than in the run itself. I can't appreciate tricks that I can't see, or don't understand and that was what I loved about GDQ. We would get outlines of what is happening trick by trick and it was amazing. I really hope this childish doxxing nonsense and spamming gets the boot from the community though. I'm hoping to do subnautica speed runs but people who would do such trashy things over an opinion are just... That's a lot of drama man, and I really don't want it in my fun. The potential of that happening for having an opinion is a real turn off from getting involved. Well, that's my opinion anyways.
I wasn't around the community at the time MHG's video was released, but this helps put what we do in perspective. I say "we", because your vids are the reason I've stepped into the speedrunning world Goose! And that's what it's all about. Positively inspiring the community to do great things. To drive people to push their limits while playing the games they love. You're one of the most important ambassadors for gaming Goose. Thank you for everything you do. Stay keen!
If you disagree with a runners views, nothing is forcing you to watch or visit their stream. Were getting into this era however where views that go against the progressive norm can force runners into exile. I ended up getting banned from a tournament and community for simply having the wrong views which put me off of streaming for nearly a year. Now with new policies being changed on twitch, I don't even know if my views will be allowed on my own channel in the future.
I agree that political or social viewpoints should not be something that disqualifies someone from any event, as long as they leave their political and social thoughts out of their time on stage.
I have only really gotten into watching speed running in the time frame you mentioned in the video. Really interesting to see how the community changed and possible reasons as to why. Particularly love Summoning Salt's progression videos. I'm not one for watching streams, but find the mechanics of it all fascinating.
I've said it before and I'll say it again; Even if I don't always agree with you, yer doing great godamn work Goose, I know the archaic elitists hate- or refuse to admit it, but every community need leaders who don't refuse to admit fault.
While not a runner myself, I have been watching a ton of speedrun explanation and progression videos over the last few weeks, and it's been immensely entertaining. I only played GoldenEye and Ocarina and such casually, but I played them a ton, and it's been fascinating learning how the gears and pistons work. It's safe to say that without this martyr, the kind of content I've been enjoying wouldn't exist, and I wouldn't be a fan. Just wanted you to know your community extends beyond runners themselves. I have a friend i'm telling about it purely for the math, because that's his interest.
Dude I love you're content you're so funny with your sarcasm and overall tone and I truly love the sincerity of all your topics! Keep em coming I love what you do! It sheds great light on all things Speedrunning!
This explains so much as to why I've been watching all these speedrun related things in the last year despite never speedrunning or having the desire to speedrun ever in the future.
Spot on. I've loved the idea of speedrunning for so long, but very few I actually sit down and watch. And there's little to no tutorials on a lot of the games I'd be interested in trying.
Cory Fice GDQ is a very large event so it is very expected that cringe moments happen alot but there are some really great speedrunners . + What's wrong with enjoying the cringe moments live we all love those cringe complations
For every guy in chainmail, for every dance that happens in a run, you have a guy that sniffs seats on stream. It's not something unique to speed running, but I'd say that speed running is definitely like a.. concentrated dose.
So THIS is the reason why i'm starting to see more speedrunning related stuff in my feed? speedrunning history, guides, funny/heartbreaking moments etc.
Makes the comparison of a martyr that much more valid, Martyrs are generally related to Jesus Christ, and while the effects are much less extreme the circumstance is very similar.
It's very true about the content being needed. No possible way I can tune into twitch at such and such a time every night, but I love watching you and Summoning Salt.
To be fair, the only thing that MHG showed up was "cringe" or "inmature" moments in speedruns, which was the worst parts of the community. Many good things happened in the speedrun community, but MHG only showed up the worst parts to justify his point. And made any new people who wanted to explore speedrunning, just avoid it like the plague. Kinda like how people see the FGC. I understand that his thoughts where about how the community degraded to a point where people are no longer willing to help any new speedrunners with tips and the likes, closing themselves up in a clam of some sort. I like to believe he wanted to "make speedruns great again" but most of his content showed how he was mocking people for how they interact with others. I don't think the guy proposing to that girl was "cringy" but he pointed "only the cringiest people marry". What the fuck was that all about? That comes off as mean-spirited. Or when he showed up the Caveman clip. Chibi was being obnoxious, and all Caveman did was say "be quiet", he didn't say "shut the fuck up you annoying dick" or something like that. You can't just ask people to be friendly and nice to each other. Sometimes life issues, social pressure or even just having a job leaves a huge strain in someone's personality.
You've pretty much been a part of that movement to create content with the Speedlore series, Goose. Even for someone like me who isn't part of the Elite or doesn't speedrun Goldeneye, it's still awesome to see how the history of Goldeneye speedrunning evolved. So you definitely deserve to be up there with guys like Apollo, EZScape, Cheese and the others.
I just wish harassment wasn't such an issue in the community. I'm NB, and i know there's no way I'll get away with breathing on stream safely. There's just no point in running for me if I'm just gonna get beat back.
I gotta say, the speedrunning community is much more inclusive than most mainstream internet communities. I think the most important thing the community would care about is on your ability to speedrun. Of course, if someone'smannerisms are so far away from what the average person thinks is acceptable human interaction, then perhaps choosing a hobby that openly broadcasts themselves to the general public may not be a successful choice in the long run. As another option, plenty of speedrunners just stream the game and voice, to keep the focus on the runs and not have to deal with the face cam side.
john m yes because fuck respect and consideration of other people, right? Grow a thicker skin, fools, i have a right to say what I want in the way i want it!!!
Awesome channel, it popped up on my feed for some reason and I haven't watched speed running videos in awhile. But I do want to give my opinion, I will never speedrun but I respect what you guys do. The first Speedrun video I've ever watched was the Ocarina of Time completed at the fastest time ever at that time. So it pretty much opened me up to a whole other world of gaming. I do watch speedruns from time to time and I know for a fact that it takes a lot time and patience to do what you guys do. Patience for stuff like speed running a game, is something I don't have lol. I just subbed!
I would say that MHG's criticisms are fair and accurate. I don't like how you painted people who just like to speedrun as a hobby though, almost as though they're some kind of terrorist hive mind or some shit, all out to get this guy. People bullying MHG out of the community is fucked, but it feels like you're trying to conflate that with all the people that just speedrun for fun. People should do whatever makes them happy.
Don't get me wrong, I love Goose's speedlores and content, but he's talked many times about his disdain for people speedrunning as a hobby. I personally don't understand it, I can see why he'd want rules for people playing on a leaderboard and as a community, but some people really do just play games for fun and for their own times. There's nothing wrong with that.
it's because it's not a good argument. yes people speedrun as a hobby but no one has said that *all* speedrunners need to do more. just that the community as a whole has problems. the problem with "speedrunning is a hobby" is that no one's arguing against that. the argument mhg gave is more of a call to arms rather than a "this community is toxic" rant. he clearly wanted the community to be better than what it was because it was a community. provide for your fans and friends and be more than what you are not because you should but because you can. and if it really is just a hobby there's no problem with that.
I'm more specifically talking about Goose's opinion on speedrunning, as opposed to MHG's. I'm a lot more familiar with Goose, and he doesn't seem to like the opinion that speedrunning can be enjoyed just as a hobby. Maybe he's never explicitly said "you can't enjoy it only as a hobby" but he's implied that's how he feels many times now. He mocks "hobbyists" as he calls them (almost like they're this weird collective of people with a goal) on his stream plenty of times.
Oh, I didn't know that was the angle you were coming from, I apologize then. It was very hard to tell just by the way you'd talk about them. People that really are speedrunning for strictly a hobby, shouldn't be bothered at all by growth and expansion in a community. That would really surprise me if they were, but I guess I should know by now that there are a lot of petty people out there. Anyway, I appreciate you explaining your position better. I look forward to the next speedlore!
ive dreamed of becoming a top runner for a few years now. I have the patience and dedication to grind it out, im just going to have to start and find myself, who knows, maybe people will recognize my name for something someday soon. Thanks for putting out quality and motivating content for the people like me who are undecided. I dont really understand why people view you as so controversial, You are levelheaded, logic minded, and frankly very wholesome. Thanks again friend.
Ano Nony same here. It was such a chill stream and event where people genuinely went to show off their personalities as speed runners to get more viewers and raise money.. but now it’s such a PC zone, and very VERY rarely do I find awesome streamers from how they acted at GDQ; they all just act neutered and it comes across as some really strange propaganda. Like they make a little joke then suddenly they look around in shock and act scared. It’s weird.
I don't speedrun, nor will I ever try to simply because I lack the dedication and I would get bored too easily, but nevertheless I'm subbed to you and enjoy watching your content because I just find it so interesting and well put together. Your style of content is exactly what MHG was trying to promote, and so he and you both have my full support. Great stuff.
i dont think anyone would disagree with the statement 'gdq is getting worse' or 'there are a lot of freaks speedrunning'. nothing hyrule said was wrong. but the way he said it, implying everyone in the speedrunning community but him was socially inept, implying the whole community had a responsibility it wasnt adhering to out of malice/stupidity, implying the cringy people were a huge problem (literally who is simpleflips to most people) that was getting ignored, this was what upset people. you should not freak people out by saying these things, these things are said all the time even by gdq people and speedrunners, but yet he somehow did. like, what are you, five? someone being a weirdo and its the craziest thing in the world? can you not ignore them? i think he genuinely got a high opinion of himself and a low opinion of speedrunners because he spent all his time stealing video footage from a few weird people and splicing it up for 10k views to forget that he, too, had zero idea how to talk with other people, was unfailingly antisocial, and deserved the community even though he couldnt stand it. i think him getting bullied off for being so unlovable taught him a very good lesson about minding yourself when you speak up, not to say the doxing was condonable in conclusion i think he should not be told hes cock of the walk for doing the most basic bitch ass videos imaginable
This is insane, I never knew MrHyruleGamer was a youtuber. He was my best friend from 2nd-5th grade then he moved away, I can't believe how much he's changed.
It kinda sucks that the speedrunning community is slowly turning into the fighting game community...10, 15, or even FIVE years ago, nothing would have happened to MHG. and people would have agreed with him. As far as the fighting game community goes...they're so bad that if you criticize ANYTHING about it, you're banned from pretty much ANY tournament. Pretty much EVERYONE in the FGC acts like DSP and Low Tier God. And now it seems like speedrunners are beginning to act like DSP. Meh. But that's just how "communities" are, they eventually become toxic collectivist entities who bleed dogma.
Sir Joelsuf people grow attached to the idea. It isn't just speedrunning anymore; it is "their community" and thus take it as a personal attack when criticism is levied their way. It's human nature. Many don't simply use speedrunning (or whatever they do) as a way to describe what they do, but as a way to define themselves as well, and thus criticizing what they do is criticizing them in their minds. Same goes for many, many communities. It doesn't help that these criticisms are inherently generalizations. That one guy that does make edited content? He's not going to think of it as "they aren't talking about me". They're going to take it as "wtf that isn't true REEEEEEEEE"
Sir Joelsuf wtf you on about with the FGC lol? do you know anything about the FGC? Have you ever been to a single tournament? Don't confuse the FGC with Kappa
This video was incredible. Not quite the Mirrored vs. Cosmo I’ve been clamoring for, but still...Goose is the historian and storyteller SpeedRunning will miss when and if he gets over it. In Goose We Trust.
This was a really great video. I honestly hadn't realized all the backlash that came from the original video. When I first saw it, I just thought "Huh, interesting." and moved on. I can only hope that MHG is doing great with his life. Stay true.
It's nice to see somebody in the speedrunning community take a calm look at the drama when it's passed ,I wonder how many "incidents" could be avoided by thinking before reacting.
So you were perfectly okay with everything that happened to MHG and yet now you whinge over being called out for your part in it?
If Torje never cared than why comment, you have to care to some degree if he bothered to comment on the fucking vid. If he felt bad, thats not mhg's fault either. He was addressing the community that was there and if Torje doesnt want a part in it than whatever, but speedrunning wouldnt grow without those content creators. Mhg's point is still valid, but Torje has no obligation to make content, it was the equivalent of casting a line into the water to see if someone would bite, instead he got dragged into the water
Most people rejected his message.
They hated MrHyruleGamer because he told them the truth.
RIGHTLY just like RNGesus.
Amen
And for that they sacrificed him but his saint spirit will leave forever in each one of us.
Eevel Ewe whoa dude you ok? You seriously saying people should commit non existence over playing games fast?
@Eevel Funny part is, is that you don't even know why you're mad, you're just pandering to a collective outcry of immature temper tantrums. Either that or you just don't use the noggin much. You want a real asshole? Try looking in your mirror.
I'm glad you made this video Goose, it just spotlights my experience in trying to learn speedrun strats. Most are so poorly documented it hurts. That's the sole reason i started Son of a Glitch, to show how some of the tricks in speeds runs are pulled off. Great video man, all the best.
Andy
loving your videos man
"Most are so poorly documented"
What game are you running? Because if it's not a well known game like SM64, OoT, then don't expect a full plate of food handed to you. But even then, I've seen well documented tutorials of a game that not many people run.
Also, have you tried asking in twitch chat for advice?

Wow... I really like that! I'll remember that.

Well, now I don't know what to think. Not that I care about this too much.
That applies everywhere and it even has a shortened form: git gud.
I feel that agdq suffered the same fate as smosh, it became less about the fun and more about the business and it ruined everything
Now we just need 2 shitty movies
@Reno Thomas He comes off as a lunatic but let's not pretend there isn't a big group of GDQ insider political cliques pushing "diversity" above actual sport.
Smosh was never fun or funny ever, though
That's weird. I think AGDQ still is awesome. There were many really good runs this year with interactive and funny runners. Bawkbasoup, Covert_Muffin, puwexil, Distortion2 and MitchFlowerPower to name a few. Also, of course, Andy and Ivan.
@john m Seems like what you are saying I can't allow people who aren't straight to be allowed the same rights and freedoms as me or I might turn into a snowflake
And this is exactly the reason why Todd Rogers is the martyr who saved speedrunning.
Abc Defg He introduced the Human Element that the community was missing. Truly a martyr.
Damn, nice lore

You pointing out all the awesome things that have happened in the speedrunning community in the last year almost brought a tear to my eye.
It actually brought a tear to my eye. That was awesome.
Cheese must have been cutting onions or something.
Psilocyb Taking out Todd Rogers was awesome, and Summoning Salt's videos have been amazing. I've shown all my friends and family his videos and now they understand and appreciate speedrunning!
So long as Onion isn't cutting cheeses, we'll be fine.
Goose that was just a brilliant video. You can really feel the passion in your delivery. You should be narrating on the discovery channel lol.
What a fucking hero. I hope he can come out of hiding someday.
Spoiled by the smash community...different strokes I guess.
Anyone who got angry about MHG's points were obviously the ones the points were directed at. Great stuff as always Goose!
KSIMuskratLuv him and Apollo went to high school together, #gritandgrind
Goose, the reason I like you and your content is not because I always agree with you, it's because you are respectful and thoughtful about how you approach concepts. You create an environment which encourages healthy discussion and discourages argumentative behavior.
On this topic, though, I agree with pretty much all points of discussion. It's a shame that, in the end it took the loss of a person's fun and enjoyment of something that seemed a big part of their life in order to cause a cataclysm.
Thanks for the hard work you do.
People take so many things personally. Can't criticize anything anymore.

I know I'm years late to the party, but this is an excellent comment.
I agree with you on the KH videos, without bizkit I wouldnt have made it through my 1st ever Lv1 Crit playthrough

LETS GET THOSE PBS BOYS!
goooooose we need you back on twitch
I've been watching your videos for a minute now and just discovered this one. I must say this might be my favorite video I've watched of yours. You truly do inspire a certain amazement to speedrunning which I quite admire and I look forward to each video you release!
You killed this video bro 👏. This has so many values that can be useful across the board in anything people are excited about and want to share. Thanks for some inspiration
That ending was beautiful
You got me into speedrunning because of these videos. I'm now actively playing some games to attempt speedruns in the future. Thank you!!
Was addressing Gooses point... not thgs
The Goose is loose!
-UA-cam changes its algorithm making speedruning videos popular
-Speedrunning community canonizes some random guy for making great shitpost
^^
omg u right
What an awesome video.....
I still turn away when that proposal appears on screen.
I've not once been interested in speedrunning but I'm loving these videos you upload. Thanks for doing them.
ValensBellator it’s not GDQ, it is LGBTAGDQ they need more diverse representation in order to make as much cancer dollars as possible.
Oh no, not diversity! Not LGBT people! The humanity!
Found the salty speedrunner
I would say though that I didnt much like the cringe compilation videos
The speedrunning community tends to attract people who can be very socially awkward, shy, introverted and sometimes on the autistic spectrum.
Love your analysis and speedruns, man!
Cheers from Poland.
As a person that only really watch cringe compilations when it comes to speedrunning the treatment of MHG makes me think that speedrunning deserves the autistic reputation they get if that's how they treat someone trying to better the community.
The Real CHIM Shady Boy, I love it when people shit on autistic people to prove their point about non-autistic assholes.
WHERE MY SHOUTOUT HOMIE?
Too alpha for just a shoutout
Where's the lisp homie?
Oh, it's still there. Just not in text.

One of my favourite videos of yours goose keep it up!
Well, that's my opinion anyways.
videos like this more frequently would be amazing
Every time i hear the word 'content', i want to punch myself in the stomach
couldn't agree more
Same but for 'leader'

you here? :)

"It's just a hobby bro"
Fair enough, but then you have no say in the community, including 99.99% of the people in these comments.
Shoutouts to simpleflips
Dude I love you're content you're so funny with your sarcasm and overall tone and I truly love the sincerity of all your topics! Keep em coming I love what you do! It sheds great light on all things Speedrunning!
Shoutouts to SimpleFlips
This explains so much as to why I've been watching all these speedrun related things in the last year despite never speedrunning or having the desire to speedrun ever in the future.
25:13 Shoutouts to simpleflips
Spot on. I've loved the idea of speedrunning for so long, but very few I actually sit down and watch. And there's little to no tutorials on a lot of the games I'd be interested in trying.
GDQ is so cringy, literally most people watch it like a freak show.
Cory Fice GDQ is a very large event so it is very expected that cringe moments happen alot but there are some really great speedrunners . + What's wrong with enjoying the cringe moments live we all love those cringe complations
I watched a man wear chainmail while speedrunning diablo 2, pretty cool if you ask me.
For every guy in chainmail, for every dance that happens in a run, you have a guy that sniffs seats on stream. It's not something unique to speed running, but I'd say that speed running is definitely like a.. concentrated dose.
Most degenerate Population I've ever seen Worse then MLP
ninjaone1 did someone actually fucking do that or are you using hyperbole
So THIS is the reason why i'm starting to see more speedrunning related stuff in my feed? speedrunning history, guides, funny/heartbreaking moments etc.
MHG is a hero, everything he said was right yet instead of taking half a second to look at themselves everyone just started crying about what he said
Makes the comparison of a martyr that much more valid, Martyrs are generally related to Jesus Christ, and while the effects are much less extreme the circumstance is very similar.
The gdq criticism is correct. Gdq got me into speedrunning and it got me out of speedrunning. Sjws have infected everything
It’s weird.
GDQ Raised money to fight cancer but became cancerous itself.
the "SJW's" didn't ruin speedrunning, runners who lack charisma and entertainment value did. but go off i guess
Charisma and entertainment are products of the patriarchy and are banned from GDQ.
+DeoMachina If you whine about whining about SJW’s, you’re part of the problem. ;~P
Great stuff.
i dont think anyone would disagree with the statement 'gdq is getting worse' or 'there are a lot of freaks speedrunning'. nothing hyrule said was wrong. but the way he said it, implying everyone in the speedrunning community but him was socially inept, implying the whole community had a responsibility it wasnt adhering to out of malice/stupidity, implying the cringy people were a huge problem (literally who is simpleflips to most people) that was getting ignored, this was what upset people. you should not freak people out by saying these things, these things are said all the time even by gdq people and speedrunners, but yet he somehow did. like, what are you, five? someone being a weirdo and its the craziest thing in the world? can you not ignore them?
i think he genuinely got a high opinion of himself and a low opinion of speedrunners because he spent all his time stealing video footage from a few weird people and splicing it up for 10k views to forget that he, too, had zero idea how to talk with other people, was unfailingly antisocial, and deserved the community even though he couldnt stand it. i think him getting bullied off for being so unlovable taught him a very good lesson about minding yourself when you speak up, not to say the doxing was condonable
in conclusion i think he should not be told hes cock of the walk for doing the most basic bitch ass videos imaginable
Who got banned from the fgc for criticsm? Actually when was the last time anyone was shunned from the fgc at all?
Its annoying that people are still blowing things out of proportion when it comes to the fgc.
Sir Joelsuf THE SPEEDRUNNING WORLD ORDER! AH AH AH AH AH AH AH! THAT'S FUCKING STUPID! I CULDN'T DOO ANYTHING!
Sir Joelsuf wtf you on about with the FGC lol? do you know anything about the FGC? Have you ever been to a single tournament? Don't confuse the FGC with Kappa

It's nice to see somebody in the speedrunning community take a calm look at the drama when it's passed ,I wonder how many "incidents" could be avoided by thinking before reacting.
