Yeah he's like VERY passionate about Scott Oelkers, but it's understandable, he made a funny ad and he has cultural significance in Japan and other Asian cultures. Man's literally the king of Pizza advertising, amongst other good advertisements. I see even more obsessed fans in the minecraft/UA-cam fandom, especially with musicians and pop culture, people can be scarily obsessed, even borderline stalkerish. I don't think Nick has gotten to that point, he's just very passionate.

@@dr.bandito60 Scott was indeed raised Mormon. In the Hot People interview, he spoke briefly about his mission experience in Taiwan, plus how he came to speak fluent Mandarin and Taiwanese Hokkien.

I thought I was prepared for anything but did not expect to see Scott in full babyface saying the M word.
Out of options, and desperate for a resolution, he took to the skies. Soaring beyond the grasps of his human existence, beyond the extent of any living thing on the planet. He booked his ticket, and flew to the only place he knew he could. Nick Robinson, anxious, jet-lagged, and hungry, landed in Japan. No amount of Monkey Ball, Mission, or Miku could have ever prepared him for what awaited him beyond the terminal.

As a Taiwanese in 24, I finally figured out why pizza ads in Taiwan always speaking in Mandarin and Taiwanese Hokkien with a foreigner’s pronunciation. I can’t believe I learn this in a journey about the story between Domino’s and Hatsune Miku.
btw., translating those ads and footages might be challenging since Domino’s ads in Taiwan always use homophonic terrier. I really don’t know how to help the community.
Do you mean pizza ads in general or just all of Domino's? It would be funny if Pizza Hut hires some foreigner to compete in the ad space.

@@HaganConnell I am not sure where "terrier" came from, but as someone who understands Mandarin I think what Wenqi means is: The ads rely heavily on puns. This was somewhat explained in previous videos of Nick's, like how the 5252 in the phone number sounds like "I'm hungry", or how the slogan " Did you call Dominos?" is kinda a palindrome (?).
A lot of Mandarin play on words relies on the fact that the language has a TON of homophones (words that sound exactly the same). For instance, in English the words "red" and "read" are homophones. Imagine that but basically every word has homophones.
I actually do think this kind of commercial could be translated and explained well, but it'd be like those fan subtitles for anime where they go into so much depth to explain the connotations of "~chan" vs "~san" and stuff like that. It wouldn't be a simple 1 to 1 thing. It'd be a pretty big project.

I did a double take too, but then I looked at the caption for that image. Apparently future President Ma had just resigned from ministership in the national government in 1997 and was hosting an episode for a TV show "各領風騷" in which he interviews Scott. Later in 1998 he'd win the Taipei mayorship and resume politics. So while Scott didn't really meet Ma as the mayor of Taipei or President of Taiwan in this instance, it's arguably a more interesting story!
At that time, Scott was a bigger deal than to-be-president Ma. I knew who Scott was, didn't care who Ma was.
Honestly, the most alarming thing for me is learning that “Guantanamera” isn’t well known to non-Cubans. I heard it enough growing up that I thought everyone knew it, like “La Cucaracha” or “Feliz Navidad”. I didn’t even know it was specifically a Cuban song!
EDIT: Didn’t expect to see so many people from so many different places respond to this... Pretty cool! Apparently the song is super famous after all, and Nick just isn’t in the loop. :P

Even as a native Spanish speaking person, I've always thought that "Guantanamera" said "Cuánta ramera" which kinda translates to "too many whores". The song always make me crack up a little.
As a kid I used to sing it as "Aguanta la vela", which more or less means "Resist/hold the candle/sail".

I think there is one way in which we were all wrong about Scott and it is, how when the Miku commercial first got viral here in the west, everyone was like "They're pretty much forcing this out of touch, white, old businessman to awkwardly talk about this anime character he has no idea about". Yet looking at his vast repertory of ads, the Miku one doesn't seem at all out of the ordinary. Besides, having been around Japan and other Asian countries all these years and having been involved in media production over there it's quite likely he was well aware of the cultural relevance of anime around that part of the world, and even of other related subcultures, such as Vocaloid itself.
In short, he knew. He must have always known exactly what he was doing.

I had watched the original video by chance once and to have UA-cam recommend the first part of your recent ones yesterday seemed like a sign, it was going to be something special. It is just so rad that you not only succeed at this, but he turned out to be as special as it seemed he should be. I watch videos of people searching for lost media, but rarely do you get to find a person behind the media. it obviously means a lot to him to keep doing the ads after all these years, to still have a way to be a part of a world he helped change.
The world deserves to know all about the lore and Scott deserves all the recognition!!
Jesus christ, I've finally learned the reason why the endings to all our Domino's commercials are spoken with a American accent here in Taiwan. Wasn't old enough to have seen the OG Scott advertisements, so I didn't know the reasoning behind it, just always found it extremely odd. Also, I'm surprised no one's called out the abominable pizza toppings showcased in this video, we Taiwanese specialize in putting everything we possible can on pizza, from boba tea to chicken testicles.

The fun thing avout the cuban song is there was a Swedish parody advert with the same song in the early 2000s! It was for our PET bottle recycling company. Bottle recyclying is referred to the same word as pawning, in Swedish: "panta". In the early 2000s they started an ad campaign called "Panta mera", which literally translates to "recycle/pawn [bottles] more". So the song is sung as such - 'Panta mera" instead of guantanamera, which is phonetically very similar. :) idk if I explained it well at all...

On the "guantanamera", that song is also used in Swedish advertisements because it sounds like "panta mera" meaning essentially recycle more, specifically cans and bottles.
So ads encouraging you to recycle your bottles use that song. Kinda weird to learn that song is/was used in Taiwan to sell pizza when I as a kid really thought it was in Swedish just with a "latin theme".

I have only heard that Domino's had a Hatsune Miku collab last year but didn't know or look up much else and only found out about the app and the popular ad through this channel. I watched almost the entire thing (the main videos about the ad and the search) and it was great! I'm amazed at how the dedication to finding out the answer to why an ad is gone had ended up with you actually interviewing the former Domino's CEO. The plot twists were really cool and exciting like, you suddenly got a mysterious message with an unbelievable photo and the guy turning out to be the son? And then the message about the interview? I was like, "Woah! wtf?!" cause that was just... it felt like something out of a tv show but it's not. I don't know how else to describe how I felt or thought of when I watched all of it that isn't just the word "amazing" cause it really is that.
