    If I recall correctly, the Max Headroom show was about a dystopian world where a reporter makes powerful enemies and gets sucked into a TV which turns him into a vengeful talking head who helps the heroes resist corporate control of the media. So there could have been some satire or protest angle to all of this.
    I also am a fan of the SNES Shadowrun soundtrack btw.

    • @deepspire
      @deepspire 3 роки тому +34

      @@michaelcowanmichaelcowan969 No it didn’t. The Coca-Cola advertising was in 1988. Max Headroom started in early 1987 as a British television film, “Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future.” Later that year came the series, and then after that, Coca-Cola entered the picture.

    • @michaelcowanmichaelcowan969
      @michaelcowanmichaelcowan969 3 роки тому +9

      @@deepspire incorrect. The New Coke commercials featuring Max Headroom came out in 1985, the US series came out in 87. Any argument otherwise is moot, as my reply is still correct and if max did exist prior to his appearance in US commercials and his US show it would be highly unlikely to have been seen in the US, and therefore not an influence on the hack.

    The problem with that is, the attack was aimed for Channel 9 (WGN-TV). That's why "Max" picks on Chuck Swirsky, and "World's Greatest Newspaper" (WGN). That's where the attack first happened, but WGN engineers quickly changed frequencies and stopped it, they didn't even manage to make the sound work. So after that failed attempt, they went for Channel 11, where they got much more airtime, with sound and everything, and they could play the whole skit (which was still talking about Channel 9, even though it was on Channel 11). That's the one on YT which we all know and love.
    Had the redditor met the guys who did it beforehand, surely they would have told him to watch Channel 9, not 11, as that was the aim of the prank. That is just one of the holes in his story, which seems like the typical Reddit lying for attention. It literally feels like he picked apart every detail of the video and built a story around it. Max says "my brother has the other one." He knew two brothers. The tape ends with someone spanking him? He had a dirty sense of humor. Max says "ooooh" all the time? One of the brothers also said "oooh" all the time. Just smells like a load of shit to me.

    The equipment *_did_* exist in the wild! Ham radio operators were regularly transmitting analog television even in the 80's. Finding the studio to transmitter link frequencies could have been as easy as looking it up in a book from Radio Shack used with police scanners. Alternatively a scanner or UHF ham radio could find the point to point link. These links are not scrambled and can be overridden by a fairly weak signal if it's close enough to the receiver or using a directional antenna, a small thing at those frequencies.

    • @blackmagic6974
      @blackmagic6974 6 років тому +15

      This. It's not impossible to build equipment from scratch either anyway, and it's easier to override a signal than one would think.The FCC regulates things, if you just wanted to do a short illegal broadcast, there is nothing stopping you from cranking up the power since you're breaking the law anyway. TV stations are limited in the power that they're allowed to put out.

    • @RMoribayashi
      @RMoribayashi 6 років тому +8

      Ove course they didn't have to override the high powered main transmitter, only the link between the studio and the transmitter. That link is usually between 5 and 100 watts depending on the distance. A 1 watt amateur TV transmitter could easily do it just by being within a couple of blocks of the transmitter tower. Since both WTTW and WGN use the Willis Tower the pirate didn't even have to move between the two incidents.

      There's another conspiracy theory around all of this.
      The FCC absolutely knew how the hack was done and where it came from. The reason they claimed NOT to know was very simple: the airwaves in those days were shockingly insecure and they didn't want to encourage copycats or enable serious crime by stating how it was done and what equipment was used.
      This was just a harmless silly prank which made a very important statement. Think of the real and serious damage that could be done otherwise.

    • @RMoribayashi
      @RMoribayashi 6 років тому +4

      @@clarissamcpigeon7857 It was still insecure in the days of analog cable. Comcast in Philadelphia used a normal outdoor TV antenna to recieve the signal from an Allentown station 60 miles away. When the station went off the air on weekend nights another channel 39 from Long Island, New York over 100 miles away would show up on cable channel 39 but only when the weather was right. That ment it was probably relaying anything strong enough on that channel. It would have been easy for someone to transmit a signal on TV channel 39 that was stronger than the distant signals from either Long Island or Allentown with just a TV extender from Radio Shack, a VCR and a small outdoor antenna. If they had made it portable and transmitted from a car they may even avoided the FCC doppler direction finding vans.

    Two Things in no particular order: (1) Captain Midnight, soon after capture, was identified as a satellite tv store owner and not an engineer.. He could’ve been both, of course. (2) There is a theory that an insider did not transmit anything but instead placed a strip of video tape over a spool of recorded tape set to be used later. Seems highly unlikely bc someone would have noticed bulge in tape or someone would have noticed him taking spool out of office or unwinding/rewinding it. Even if he copied the original tape and recorded over a small section, someone would have noticed when or how he did it.

    So first off I’m sorry for the lack of structure and messiness that is my writing. Also if you have any sorta thoughts on this or evidence to disprove it I’d be glad to hear it, and all that.
    I know this is many years too late but I have a very solid plausible theory. While J and K didn’t do the hack themselves they made the video. Between speech patterns and jokes, as well as the skipping around and voice distortion (back then it would be quite easy to do the voice effects with the AV equipment they had at the time) I believe that J and K made the video as a fact. They also were big in the phreak scene of the local area and mentioning channel 11 means they knew about it before it happened, something like that wouldn’t be posted on a board because if it was, FCC and internet detectives would have found it by now, also more people would have seen it and watched channel 11 at that time, and I don’t believe they would ruin their surprise early also warning it would draw attention and I believe FCC would have already searched that angle. This means J and K didn’t do the hack. So we have the technician who I will call T from here on out. T was an audio tech who knew J and K either through the boards or as a personal friend. This would most likely be as a personal relationship to J and K that allowed both parties to know and access the skills and knowledge of the other. J and K would probably have done this for fun as well as being like a phreak’s wet dream to fuck with tv. The chances of another person, much less a technician for the broadcasting channels having the same speech patterns as J is very much impossible or close to it. Also I imagine the FCC would have picked up on it if they had exhausted the whole lead of technicians. It would be quite easy to pick up such a unique speech pattern and mannerism of the one the person on video had. So I rule out it being a single tech with a vendetta that did both the video and the hack. I believe the hack was already planned and ready to go at least a week or two in advance, the video was edited and sent to the tech probably hand delivered by J and/or K. I believe that the first channel hack without audio was to make sure they could do it smoothly in a control environment or just to test that it was possible and went smoothly as to test the waters and get a little practice, even teasing the night to come. The tech then put it on channel 11 the couple hours later that it would most likely take to directly go and do everything before booking it. J and K didn’t know a specific time but they knew it would be later that night and probably knew it would be during the doctor who episode. Now we have it after the hack where all three lay low and nobody snitched or claimed it. Thus I believe it was both an outside and inside job, having a guy inside who planned and executed the physical parts and mainly the illegal parts of the plan, and J&K being the ones to make the video. This of course is pure speculation with inferences on a secondary source and for the most part shouldn’t be taken as anything more than my personal belief. Though this is the first thing that sprung to my head, and I feel like it fits both the previous story and the revelation of being an inside job.
    TL;DR: J&K made the video, but a disgruntled tech did the hack.

      The 80's was the heyday for hackers because few things had sufficient security yet, I mean you would never think to make the mouthpiece of a payphone tamper-proof because the last thing you would imagine is someone figuring out they can use a coin to manipulate the dial tone for free calls. Anything electronic became a challenge to find out what free stuff you could make it do.
