Used to dance to this EVERY weekend at the club. Love me some Mary Jane Girls! Wouldn't think this would go over at a gay club but it worked! THANKS, EMPRESS!
Us gay guys loved this song because it has a double meaning, had a great beat and words, and because they were So CAMPY! They were the backup singers for Rick James and he produced their albums. Another great song is by one of the girls who went solo, Val Youg. She did a great song "If You Should Ever Be Lonely", which was later remade by Mariah Carey. I like Val's version more.
I was 4 when this song came out. Another girl group from the 80s is Klymaxx. Their songs Meeting In The Ladies Room and I Miss You are straight bangers!
This track had me strutting my stuff when I was a little kid. The singers dressed up like 80s hookers, and they gave off total porn star vibes! I loved them. Rick James was trying to prove eminence over Prince at the time. He was delusional, but this was a stellar vibe for sure. 💛
No kidding about the porn star vibes! The blond girl sure looked like she was making sweet sweet love to that motorcycle.😉 Empress, you'd look great with those hairstyles, I could see you as a member of the group.
@@EmpressReacts There was jealousy on Rick’s part...he even stated on multiple occasions that he would never work with Prince, but he did admire his work nonetheless. Rick was forever ruined by drugs, and so his sense of reality probably wasn’t very reliable! 😂
PRINCE was the man but MARY JANE GIRLS definitely were more talented than VANITY/APPOLLONIA 6. All of them were baddies in both groups but 'them VOCALS' were NOT present in PRINCE's girl group!!!
These guys were the "Original" Spice Girls who like Teena Marie (RIP) were the proteges of The Late Rick James. In the 1980's they did all of the Music Shows American Bandstand, Soul Train & Solid Gold. I wish one of them would go to Europe and talk to The Children there, and tell them what time it is. In The UK they create Boyband/Girlbands like Assembly.
I have 14 things to say about this song: Ooh hoo hoo hoo hoo hoo ooh hoo hoo ooh hoo hoo hoo hoo:) Fun club and radio song from the brilliant musical mind of Rick james! Like Prince did with Vanity 6, Vanity, Sheena and other female artists he produced, I think that Rick also tended to go for an overt sexual portrayal of women, evident from the lyrics and visuals back in the day.
🤣🤣 your 14 things is brilliant. You get the 🏅🏅 of the day. Wear them proud ‼️And interesting how Prince and Rick sexualized their women artists. This shows me rappers pretty much followed their blueprint
Written, composed, and produced by the genius Rick James, and he played most of the instrumentals as well. Check out their hit "All Night Long" as well! Prince also had his own girl groups, kind of in the same vein, Vanity 6 and Apollonia 6, worth checking out as well! 🔥
The Mary Jane Girls were the Pussycat Dolls of the 80s. Put together by Rick James, they had more of a funk edge to them. All Night Long is a r&b/funk classic
Their look was the best and worst of the 80s. Very Frederick’s of Hollywood or Trash and Vaudeville. I definitely watched this for the first time on heavy rotation probably MTV or BET. Okay Empress now get ready for this. “I Eat Cannibals” by girl group Toto Coelo. You have to react to it!
Yesss I knew you’d jam to this! Thanks for reacting. So catchy and you’re right that ‘80s house is lit lol. The lead singer is JoJo McDuffie, love her voice. Some other good singles they had are “Candy Man,” “All Night Long” and their cover of “Walk Like a Man.”
MJGs are Rick James protégés, which include Teena Marie (a white female artist with a soulful voice). They all brought music that is pure Soul, Funk, and RnB.
Alfredo Martinez - this is a name I'm not familiar with so I'll have to check these songs out. Thanks! Oh I know If You Should Ever Be Lonely, never knew it was Rick James production. Mariah covered this song.
@@alfredomartinez7599 - just did haha. I know If You Should Ever Be Lonely, never knew it was Rick James production or by Val Young. Mariah covered this song. Seduction i've not heard, it's good.
I absolutely love this early 80s R&B funk music! Glad to see you reacting to it. Others like this that I'm sure you'll love it Chaka Khan (Ain't Nobody) and Tom Tom Club (Genius of Love).
@@EmpressReacts the MJ Girls were performing at Dick Clark's New Years Rock N' Eve. They were performing "Boys". So the music starts, the girls started dancing. "Boys" they sang. My sister went: Wow, they can talk! "Boys" the Girls sang again. My sister went "Wow they can speak TWO WORDS! "
One of my all time 80s favorites , real pleased i found your reaction to it! Great reaction, i was clicking away on beat with you, brilliant upload! Big like from the UK Sonique
This the song is still 🔥. Rick James is underrated as a writer and producer. Body Rolls always make me laugh, when I learned that was the name of that dance move. Rick James had the MJG's Prince had Vanity 6, Nasty Girl is 🔥 too. PS one of the group members ,Yvette Marine, sued or attempted to sue Paula Abdul for pass her vocal off as her a là Jennifer Lopez & Ashanti.
Whoa‼️‼️‼️ I wasn't ready for the fall 🤣 Clearly live to tell still in my head, but dang Paula was out her faking. Lemme find out she was the first J Lo🤣 And S/O to Rick James🗣🗣 this song 🔥🔥
So Prince had Vanity six and Apollonia six as girl groups he would produce for. And Rick James had the Mary Jane Girls. Battle of the bands?? Or was there place for both?? I think the latter. Both groups came out with red hot caramel sticking sexy songs with thumping funk and base. I LOVE the Mary Jane girls. Funk with a capital F. Maybe do apollonia six with sexshooter and Vanity six with Nasty girls after this? Mary Jane girls also have a great song that was sampled by almost the whole hip hop community: All night long
Let's not forget, All Night Long. While we have Rick James on our own minds, I've just got to give him his dues for his terrific bass guitar pumping on his remix of Behind The Groove, by Teena Marie.
Empress, when my siblings and I, even our neighbors, heard this song, we all went crazy… Black, white or Hispanic! The Mary Jane Girls were hot! I still have the greatest hits CD in my collection. They are a must have and all the songs are great!💝
I grow up to this song on the radio, a little before my time but my mom kept rnb soul from the 60's 70's and 80's in my ears. Yea Rick James named them after his favorite green planet Lol. The lead singer and the White girl were his back up singers and he put them together. He cast them as different rolls of women of the time that men found sexy. So you had the lead singer as the load talking girl who takes nothing from anyone, she calls you out on your crap. Than you had the Valley Girl who was the one on the bed on the phone, She's not that innocent and but she loves to play new games and learn, than you had the classy one at the table with the champagne. She has dinner ready waiting for her man to come home from work, and last the freak dom girl, the girl on the bike was the one you could not take home to mom because you're busy tide up to her bed. Another fun fact each character girl also represented the women James loved. I think the Dom Girl and Valley Girl was characters were based on his time with Linda Blair the girl from the Exorcist who he use to date, and the load mouth who doesn't take his crap was a character based on Teena Marie. At least that's what I read, he also wrote cold blooded about Linda Blaire.
