    Edit: FYI the dark haired one Karin (?)was married to the Andrew Ridgely from wham and Siobhan, the one with short blond hair, married to Dave Stewart from Eurythmics

    I think the thing you have to remember about the music videos back then, is that because of MTV, every artist just had to put out a video to advertise their new songs. This often meant that there were a lot of low quality video's that were put out just so there was a way to play the song on MTV. Most of the videos of the 80s and 90s were either expensive extravagant well made videos or cheaply made poor quality videos. This was one of those videos that obviously didn't have much of a budget.

    • @xzonia1
      @xzonia1 Рік тому +10

      So true! And people were just making it up as they went along because videos were a new thing and no one really knew what to do in the 80's and 90's, so they just tried anything and everything! Lol. Good times. It's all so polished now, I feel like it takes some of the fun out of it. I liked never knowing what we'd get next. :)

    • @richardc8795

      I think this video style is formulaic for pop bands like Bananarama. Watch their other videos and find out.

    • @pastorofmuppets22
      @pastorofmuppets22 Рік тому +2

      Additionally, everyone as an up and coming filmmaker did videos to make a name for themselves....it was whether or not they succeeded, decided if they moved up in the world. So in a lot of cases,the director and the artist had totally different visions of what the video should be. Some had ginourmous budgets,but that didn't always equate to a legendary video. Bonnie Tyler for example...hated the video for Total eclipse of the heart,and even broke from her label over it. The video for Rock me tonite by Billy Squire was the epitome of video killed the radio star. The song itself was a big hit. But the video killed his career

    • @pastorofmuppets22
      @pastorofmuppets22 Рік тому +2

      @JohnLA Not only is history written by the winners...but things like the public vernacular catches up with things. It either pushes an inaccurate narrative, or makes things outright derogatory. People look back on the glam scene for example...and with today's eyes see women being objectified. That wasn't the case at all. The women drove the whole scene, exactly the way they wanted it to be. The up and coming bands, didn't have jobs,places to stay,or any money. The girls all did. That put them in the driver's seat. And as far as people canceling words nowadays.... don't realize that the words they're canceling often were the time's nice way of putting things... until the vernacular caught up and made it derogatory. Whatever acceptable replacement people come up with now to words and phrases will inevitably become derogatory. So it is a never ending, unwinnable battle. Special education is an example of the time's nice way to say someone has a mental disability or affliction. In the days and years following,the public started saying "sped" as a slight. A hundred years ago, doctors put the term "mongoloid idiot" on the birth certificates of afflicted people. So r-tard was the time period's actual nice way of saying it...as to r-tard a internal combustion engine's timing meant it ran fine,it just runs slow. Now, it's the R word. So we can't tailor everything based on how we feel,no matter how much we may want... because the vernacular will just catch up,or history will change it's perspective.

      True. I remember hearing an interview with Ann Wilson about how expensive Heart's videos were to make, and they had some pretty elaborate sets. Easily a couple of million dolalrs, but these Bananarama videos were probably $250k or so.

    I have a couple of recommendations for offshoots/collaborations of Bananarama that I think you'd enjoy: they did a song with another British band, Fun Boy Three, called "It Ain't What You Do (It's the Way That You Do It") which is just pure all-out good times. I find myself bouncing in my chair whenever I listen to it. And one of the Bananrama girls, Siobhan, went on to form Shakespears Sister in the 90s. The song "Stay" is one you have GOT to do. Be sure you react to the video version for added effect!

    Bananarama songs are just so catchy that even if this isn't your favourite type of music it just makes you feel a bit more happy, smiley, and generally uplifted. I think what helps about these girls is that they always seemed to be having so much fun in their videos and not taking themselves very seriously. I can't remember what songs of theirs you've already done but Love in The First Degree is worth checking out, maybe Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye), Robert deNiro's Waiting, or Nathan Jones as well (I think you've done Venus and Cruel Summer). Maybe also their Collab with Fun Boy Three with It Ain't What You Do It's The Way That You Do It is worth a look.

    This is pure sugar bubblegum pop that you listen to in the summer, hang out on the beach, or cruise around. It's just a fun ditty, but with definite "blow a raspberry at the guy who broke your heart" lyrics. In the video, during the vignettes if you look at the screens behind them, you'll see they're (sort of) matching the famous scenes that are playing. The 80's, man; they were a heck of a thing. lol Videos were such a fresh medium, and directors had "visions". It was a weird and wild experimental smorgasbord. "Billy Don't Lose My Number" by Phil Collins pokes fun at the whole craziness of it all, and lampoons movies and 80's videos (though to hear the guitar solo complete, you'd have to listen the song and not the video).

    As a British 80s kid I look back on the decade with a lot of fondness. 80s music was arguably the peak of pop music, even if you watch old episodes of Top of the Pops it’s like night and day compared to the 70s, like 1980 came and suddenly TOTP had ten times the production values and energy of before.

    This song blew my mind when it came out (16). That chorus is EVERYTHING. The music arrangement is damn near directly pulled from an "Italo Disco" song by Michael Fortunati called "Give Me Up", but the chorus bit is original. SAW (Stock Aitken Waterman) were kind of like the British Synth Hit Machine producers in the 80's that Motown was for R&B in the 60's, and this is them in full glory. If you Band Aid, "Do They Know it's Christmas?" again, you will see Bananarama in the video along with other 80s people you've been reacting too.
    It will be fun to see how well you do in identifying them after so much more exposure.

    Listen to Michael Fortuati's Give Me Up. Stock, Aitken and Waterman essentially "bought" this song's hook from that. Give Me Up was massively popular in Japan

    The late 80's early 90's were a unique time for me because my Neice & my Son & daughters had all come of age ~ where they were discovering their own identity through the music & artists of that time ~ just as my older relatives tried to understand the artists who influenced me as a teen ~ I was then trying to keep up with the music artists they were in to

    They never took themselves too seriously and still don’t even today. French and Saunders worked with them in the late 80s for the Comic Relief Telethon and became friends with them, one of their nights out together is the inspiration for the famous Absolutely Fabulous scene where Eddie and Patsy fall out of the car drunk.

    This is the ‘2nd phase’ of Bananarama whereby they teamed up with ultra-successful UK producers Stock, Aitken & Waterman. SAW produced over 100 Top 40 UK hits and were omnipresent in the mid-late ‘80s/early ‘90s (for better or worse).
    SAW operated a ‘hit factory’ type of production with many of their songs having a very similar Eurobeat sound although the Bananarama tracks featured rare co-writing credits with the ladies so they were more involved than many of the other acts.

      Yes, SAW were unstoppable in the latter part of the 80s. They produced Bananarama, Dead or Alive, Rick Astley, early Kylie Minogue - the list goes on.

    A great female singer of the 70’s and 80’s that has a Rod Stewart gravelly voice, is Suzi Quattro. She was really popular in the UK and did cameos in the hit TV series Happy Days. Have a listen to She’s in love with you, or Can the Can. Her voice is memorable.

    Your next one from the ladies should be their cover of “Venus”. By the early 90’s one of the ladies paired up with another and formed a group called Shakespeare’s Sister. You need to do that group’s song and video called “Stay” from 1992. Please did this one! You won’t be sorry.
