"You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" is a 1978 single by American disco/R&B singer Sylvester. The song was written by James Wirrick and Sylvester. It appears on Sylvester's 1978 album, Step II. Music critic Robert Christgau has said the song is "one of those surges of sustained, stylized energy that is disco's great gift to pop music".[1]
In 2003, Q Magazine ranked "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" at number 677 in their list of the "1001 Best Songs Ever".[2] In 2019, the song was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant

Hey Empress! This song is serious 🔥🔥🔥! I mean when you need a pick me up you put this song on and it’ll give you an instant energy boost! The first time I heard this was when I was watching the movie, Studio 54, with Salma Hayek and Neve Campbell. It’s about the famous nightclub in New York back in the ‘70’s. That place was insane. Lol I immediately downloaded it on my phone. I love the fast upbeat tempo, and Sylvester, well, he’s just amazing! Thanks Empress!

Sylvester was an Iconic voice and Entertainer from The Disco era. You should check out his album from 1985. You would enjoy the song Someone Like you. You'll get a kick out of the Video.
Empress, Sylvester was arguably the first Drag Superstar. Without Sylvester there would be no RuPaul.
He was a DIVA to the core and he would have bristled at being called the King of Disco... he was most definitely referred to as the Queen of Disco during the early 70s. Donna Summer may be disco’s most successful act, arguably because she survived the backlash and even grew her pop career by switching to a more new wave vibe with her Wanderer release. But she wasn’t the Queen of Disco until the late 70s and earned that moniker from the mainstream press. Let’s just say they share the title.
Izora Rhodes and Martha Wash, Sylvester’s backup singers did have commercial success as The Weather Girls. Martha Wash also had some dance chart success in the 90s with RuPaul. Jeannie Tracy, a high NRG artist (who appeared on Star Search) also sang backup for Sylvester and was his caretaker as his health declined due to AIDS.
Sylvester was a byproduct of the underground disco scene that brought gay and straight, black and white together. On the dancefloor, everyone is equal. When disco went mainstream, this mixing of marginalized groups made the white majority uncomfortable and this is what inevitably led to the backlash against “disco.” It wasn’t against the music per se, but rather the community of tolerance and acceptance of nonconformity that caused the backlash.
One last thing. There is a beautiful song by Sylvester called You Are My Friend sung in concert where he introduces Izora and Martha and they get mini solos. The crowd reaction to Izora’s deep deep baritone (?) drives the crowd wild. It’s a must listen for any Sylvester fan.

@Tom Robinson...I am part of the "white majority" and a straight male but as well as liking 50's rock and rockabilly and doo wop and R&B and soul and blues music and Motown and British invasion groups, I also always liked disco-the music and the dance clubs and went to those clubs in the 70's. I always thought it was mostly the lovers of good old rock and roll but especially hard rock who thought disco was just too silly and the music sometimes too robotic and that the fashions were too shiny. The platform shoes were certainly stupid but maybe I should not blame disco for those ugly shoes. I never associated disco with any non-straights or hatred of them even if they may have had a part in the rise of disco although I am sure some did not like any association of the genre with gays but I think that was only a minority of the anti-disco crowd. I think a bigger part of the anti-disco crowd were racists who did not like the large involvement of blacks and Latinos or simply could not dance.

The courage it took to be his authentic self had to have been on the level of Hercules for him to do that during that time period.

Such a good Patreon suggestion. Sylvester was legendary in the gay underground scene in the 1970s San Francisco and this track went mainstream, and it's pretty epic he was cross dressing along with Bowie way way back in the day. I seem to recall reading or hearing that he performed at Harvey Milk's birthday party one year.
He did perform for Harvey's birthday. They were pretty good friends.

This so reminds me of Patrick Hernandez “Born To Be Alive.” Someone should make a movie about Sylvester because of what I’ve read he led a very colorful life. Incidentally I just watched a trailer for the new Tina Turner documentary. Empress you should to really react to her version of the Al Green song “Lets Stay Together!”

Glad you were able to get acquainted with the incredible Sylvester!! You are so right. He was def a pioneer for so many in the gay community and so many of his biggest hits were anthems in the gay clubs. It’s very sad that he was taken from us so early by AIDS, as he was becoming more popular and even having mainstream breakthrough. I was fortunate to have met Sylvester and even hang out with him when a friend brought him to the local club we used to go to. Even though he was near the end of his life and rather frail he still had an incredible spirit, wild sense of humor and was also a very gentle soul. You should check out his Greatest Hits if you want to hear some more of that unique and glorious voice of his.

I was def feeling your reaction energy with this song and moving along with you! The vocals, the beat, the lewks....I agree...10s across the board! I remember coming across a Sylvester album "Rock the Box" in the 80's and I bought it based on the glam cover only....after that I was hooked! Of course I had to hunt down his earlier albums, including this classic. Sylvester was def waaaayyyy ahead of his time, a disco legend, a gay icon, a fashion trailblazer and non-binary before it was a word.

Disco was originally Black and Gay. Sylvester stayed true to that tradition. He passed away from HIV/AIDS in 1988 at the age of 41, which was way too young.
