A good flow but perhaps a bit too lengthy without all the points the nomad were looking for? like a range of costs on the basics besides the beautiful landscape? Also, erm is it only me who prefers the film burns and page flips effects and yellow fonts? felt like the templates describing locations and stuff were a bit too generic, off a standard template? not the authentic leblanc storytelling style? just my view yeah!

Digital nomads (and lack of timely action from the government, of course) are one of the reasons why housing crisis exists and prices got unbearable for Portuguese people to live. Young Portuguese workers (with higher education) are now forced to share housing or even return to their parents homes due to the rise of prices in the bigger cities. It has become a really dire situation for some. Portugal is a great place to enjoy if you're a millionaire, not if you're a middle/lower class citizen

This is beyond false... Just compare all prices to anywhere in France, Italy, Greece. Portugal is one of the cheapest countries to visit in all of Europe.

Blaming digital nomads for Lisbon's rental issues is misguided. There are around 16,000 nomads compared to 5.4 million tourists annually - so tourists outnumber them by about 300 to 1. The vast number of tourists drives demand for short-term rentals, reducing long-term housing availability and raising prices. The real issue is the tourist influx, not the relatively small number of digital nomads.

    • @RedLine0069

Do not blame the Digital nomads for that, blame the greedy land lords that are taking advantage of this situation. I do not live in Lisbon or Porto i live in the center of portugal and there are no digital nomads here and still the rents are more than double and i am not talking house prices because they are stupiditly high, looks like all the houses are made in gold

Fantastic video! My partner and I are both from the UK but we have been living in Lisbon for the last few years after travelling for the best part of 6 years as digital nomads. I must say however that if we didn't have our own apartment here in the city, which we purchased around 3 years ago, we would find it difficult to afford the same lifestyle that we had whilst living and travelling throughout Asia. The cost of living has skyrocketed and the average Portuguese person who earns around 1200 euros a month wouldn't be able to afford to live in this city, which is a shame. We are both from the UK and work in e-commerce and graphic design, and even for us, it is an expensive city to live in. We feel a great sense of gratitude for the lives that we lead.
A lot of the places that you have highlighted in the video would be out of bounds to many though for it to be sustainable, unless of course you earn good money or frequent them once in a while as a treat. The Time Out Market is insanely expensive for what it is and the co-working spaces are unaffordable to many. I am not sure whether it is just that we earn less than the average digital nomad, or whether it is just that digital nomads nowadays are earning a lot more, whether that be coming from corporate positions, or from countries where their purchase power is a lot greater.

Income tax has a progressive rate that is ranging from 13% to 48%, so you only pay the max tax on anything you make above ~€80k.
€80k might seem low for some, especially Americans; but the average salary here is below €20k. The difference is that you can live comfortably on that salary here in Europe. A household income (not single person) of €80k would put you into the top 15-20%.

This is hands down one of the most engaging videos I've watched from your channel. The editing and the supporting visuals were spectacularly vibrant without being distracting. The video coincided with my piqued curiosity regarding nomad life in Portugal and already helped immensely with the update regarding tax. I would have liked a little more information on actual longer term living costs (like monthly rental prices) and a summary of potential monthly living expenses at different levels of lifestyle, as the costs highlighted were more from a tourist perspective like you mentioned. You did however give sufficient hints with the comparisons to grocery prices in Portugal and elsewhere. All in all an awesome video, and looking forward to the next deep dive like this one. 👏🏾👏🏾

If you cannot afford living in Lisbon then ...move to the country. Those who can pay for the rents have the right to live there.
As a Portuguese myself, from Aveiro, I think Portugal has always benefited tremendously with tourist interest and asking a tourist or expat to not consider Portugal for his temporary/definite residency is nothing more than a betrayal of all that our country stands for.
All expats are welcome if they care to make Portugal rich in culture and lifestyle!

@@TaniaSaucy I don't disagree that Portugal benefits from tourist interest, but an expat is not a tourist. Portugal can be attractive to tourists while making sure locals can still live in their home cities, or those same cities end up becoming unauthentic amusement parks. To be clear I'm all in favour of immigrants who work for portuguese economy, just not "expats" who work outside of it

I’m from Lisbon, born and raised, and have lived in the US for over two decades. While I appreciate your efforts, I didn’t appreciate the “samba” music in the background. That literally has nothing to do with Portuguese culture. Would you have “samba” in the background for a video on New York City? My point is that there’s lots of Portuguese music that you could use instead. And remember that “the locals” are not Brazilian.

Loved the video! So relax and nice ambiance thru out. What i've learned about Lisbon it's that the housing situation is more complex then that. The rent is to high for locals so they can't live in the city. And the contractors have a hard time restoring old buildings. I think last time I've check it was a bout 60.000 empty buildings in Lisbon due to this. I hope this wonderful country and city gets back on its feet with the housing market soon.

A lot of things played into this, but one of the major contributors was the former tax relief for foreigners.

Great video! Not quite true regarding the tax benefits though and you seriously understated how good they are (0% for income sourced outside of Portugal, 20% for income sourced in Portugal). That is, via the Non-Habitual Regime (NHR). The new government has made a u-turn and they have extended the application period until the end of 2025.
Regardless of the NHR going or staying: There is another option that is pretty decent if you're a freelancer, creator with ad/affiliate/sponsorship income or e.g. software developer who sells software. Namely the Simplified Regime (Recibo Verdes). There are different categories with varying flat tax dedudcations. You can't deduct expenses, but get a generous fixed/flat deduction, meaning you're taxable income is lowered considerably.

Traveling videos have to evolve in order to keep up the interest of the public, that's why they add challenges like leaving the comfort zone which makes a better story... Living for two weeks on an airbnb and going to tourist areas is kind of... normal, making it more informative than the excitement of an adventure. In my opinion your endeavor goes more into the cinematic than the content it self.

I know I could make great videos and content, I have followed this channel for years and has inspired me. I have a drone, GoPro, Osmo 4, but an old iPhone XR and no decent camera to start vlogging!

You paid 53€ for 2 people for dinner. Here in America we pay 20 for 1 bowl at chipotle

Fun video, but Not true: the Porto bookstore did not inspire Harry Potter. Even JK Rowling posted a confirmation that she had never visited the shop. We visited Lisbon in April & found prices can be average if you have a kitchenette & willing to get groceries. We loved grabbing fresh squeezed orange juice & bifana sandwiches at the kiosk & small shops!

Try Lisbon between October and April. It’s the place for you if you like Atlantic storms and rain. Why can’t you be a little more balanced in these videos. It’s not all sun and sand.

I loved the thumb nail on this video but found the content to be well meh. I don't mean to sound rude but many points throughout the video I was fast forwarding. Ive saw a comment that this may become a new series and I truly hope not. It didnt feel like the Leblanc we know and love! Don't normally comment and sorry if this sounds mean.

Loved this great look at Portugal, Christian. I'd be there in 2.5 (and on your program) but retirement has gotten in the way. There are some girls who have stolen my name and IDK, maybe I should roll over and just let em have it. Enjoy life peeps - it's so worth the effort. XO, Kelly ... btw if you need a house Mom over there, I'm it!

Costa del Sol is our favourite! Estepona specifically right next to Marbella with amazing fitness scene and can easily do weekend trips to Portugal and Morocco!
Within Andalucía you have Tarifa, Cadiz, Ronda and many many more.
Hit us up if you plan to come down ;)

Watched the entire 47 minutes. Great video just lacking the prices. What can a digital nomad expect to pay for accommodation per month? Food per month? That’s what I watched for and did not get. Otherwise, nice travel guide!

In Portugal for foreign people easily you can find a very cheap houses near the Lisbon, however if you move for tiny cities is better because the houses even cheaper and quality life is so much better! You can buy a car and quickly move to the different cities on the country!! Lisbon is good but the other cities in the country are too

One of the reasons why certain services like the mopeds have high prices it is because some people do not respect the property of others, be that private or business properties, so unfortunately that is what happens.
In the UK the way the public bicycles are very often left in places they should not be can be an upsetting moment to watch. Sad how people just behave like that.
I am a customer but I have to agree with making those only accessible to people who appreciate what is available to them.

Lisbon is the most expensive capital in Europe when comparing the average local salary to the cost of rent. Cost of living has gone up around 30% since 2022. Loved my time here but city life is not what I'm looking for.
Eager to move back to Asia.
