As a Portuguese citizen, I feel deeply concerned about the current situation in our country. We are experiencing what feels like an invasion due to the disastrous policies of completely open borders and golden visas. Our cities are being irreversibly affected by mass tourism and unchecked migration. Our politicians are responsible for this decline with their policies that we NEVER signed for. They kicked me and my family, including an 87 year old lady, out of our home in lisbon because the government changed the laws in order to make it easier to sell real estate to foreigners. The real estate prices in my home city are obscene, none of us can afford this. Add to that this absurd level of unmitigated immigration, my city, the place where I was born and raised isn't the same anymore. Garbage, grafitti, and crime everywhere is kebab shops. I despise it.

Exactly! It's a combination of different but very destructive policies that are putting pressure on cities and lowering the standard of living for Portuguese people (in this particular case) and most Europeans. This is happening despite us paying very high taxes. The worst part is that these issues could easily be avoided, but our politicians have proven they do not have our best interests at heart.

gentrification happened to my city, I almost don't recognize some of the more emblematic streets. It's impossible for the common portuguese 'mortal' to live in Lisbon. Add to this lots of unqualified, illegal immigration - most of which get exploited by networks of criminals - and the result is insecurity on the streets, dirty streets, etc.

This is so sad, and happening all across europe, the UK too, teachers and nursing staff have been using food banks, retirees as well. Why should this be the new ‘normal’ ?? Our council taxes are too high for pensioners with the cost of living impact added to it all. Its an unfair world which favours those who have invested in air b snd b over and over and are big shareholding companies pushing locals out of homes by keeping house prices artificially high from investing and bulk purchasing those former homes! Many properties sit empty as they are portfolio stock only, passing hands through the few with reasonably prices options for homes denied to many. You are in a lifetimes debt from the outset, which you are compromised to struggle to pay alongside everything else.
My heart is breaking right now. I was born in Lisbon 62 yrs ago. My family came to Canada when I was a baby , but we went back every other year for 2 months. My family is from Monte Estoril, not far from Lisbon. I do not believe my eyes, to what this once great city has become. There was NEVER any graffiti or garbage strewn about:( My daughter moved to Lisbon 2 yrs ago and is living there, cannot see what she sees in it to be honest. I know things change, but the city has gone really down hill. I hope they manage to bring it back to what it once was. We always had some immigration from Mozambique especially , but never to this extent. I wish I knew what caused this decay and downward trend. Shame, such a shame. I have no yen to visit.

Someone from Berlin here, used to be exciting, full of promise and even safe in the 1990s, quickly deteriorated after 2000 and now is a complete hellhole. I moved to the countryside and never go into the city unless I am forced to. If we could rebuild the wall, this time around all of Berlin I would be for it :)

I'm portuguese and I've been studying, working and living in Lisbon since 2004. I can absolutely guarantee you that it's a completely different place. I don't recognize it anymore, I don't enjoy it frankly, and allot of the country is in similar state. We are quickly losing our identity, our culture, our language, our houses, our rights, our security...everything. Absolutely devastated to see my country in the state it is nowadays.

Well, that homeless guy you talked with, is Fredo Mergner, once a great jazz guitar player that came to Lisbon from Hungary, back in the 80's. He was also a language teacher. And he was, still is, a charming nice guy, whom I was lucky to know back in the days at the lisbon jazz spot Hot Club. Unfortunately he was a victim of heavy drugs and lost it all. I thought he was gone by now. Poor Fredo. How wonderfully he played.

A stranger came onto one of his live streams recently and told his story on how he was almost murdered on public transport during the afternoon (lost 9 litres of blood). The problem is there are very few Portuguese still in Libson. Immigrants have flooded the city and as a result it has become an undesirable place to be. Even Porto has become the same.
The buildings themselves are covered in grime and look neglected similar to the old buildings in Cuba - abandonment will follow. Didn't the Mayor of New York enact a law that cleaned the city up? I think it was called "the broken window" policy. Broken windows indicated neglect which attracted crime. Flooded the place with cops. Small demeanors were punished and eventually the place was reconstructed and cleaned up which in turn attracted people back in to spend money. Of course that was America where somtimes a short acting "local and benign dictatorship" can do wonders. Unfortunately Europe has had a bad time in the last century and is allergic to dictators, even benign ones. So nothing will get done.
The cost of living has reduced consumption and demand. Like the old guy said, tourism increased dramatically after covid, mainly due to the cheap avaialbility of property, foreign buyers drove the price up beyond the reach of locals. It's a situation which has been repeated in many european cities.
You didn't have to go to Portugal to find towns with no shops left, you just need to come to Wellington in Shropshire. All we have left are Charity Shops and cafes

About the "closed shops" - In Portugal there's a well-known phenomena of abandoned buildings. When you move here you see them everywhere, there's almost a million of them. It's a complex topic, it has to do with aging population, poor construction, culture, economics, absurd rent laws, inheritance and many other factors. But the bottom line is that Portugal has I think the highest rate of dilapidated buildings in Europe. And because they've been abandoned for a long time, they gradually deteriorate until it's not viable to renovate them. In many the roof had collapsed, but you can't see it from the street. The result is that even in Lisbon and Porto center you'll see many closed entrances. These are not closed businesses per-se, they might have been closed for 20 years or more. Lisbon has become dirty and inundated with tourists and everything that comes with that. Many Portuguese don't go there anymore. For myself as well, I find other parts of Portugal and I only go to Lisbon for specific occasions. I didn't realise the drug issue was so bad until I saw your video. Thanks
True diversity of cultures does have a positive effect, I agree, but the type of culture which are coming in and the amount of them from my perspective gives a very negative result. It’s like salt on a meal, too much of it at some point turns counterproductive.

As a lisboeta I can say the following: First: those people in "baixa" are not selling real drugs. It's a tourism scam and that's why no police goes after them. They only went after you because of the filming. Second: you did not venture into any dangerous place as far as I could see, the corner you crossed and came down again (near the Palace of Independence) actually goes into a very nice area called Colina de Santana where Amália was born and Camões lived. Third: we have always had a graffiti problem since the eighties - and yes it's a real shame and our culture seems not to have changed that much -. Fourth: the construction is because of a new drainage system to prevent flooding in winter time . Fifth: we currently have the worst Mayor since the last thirty years and there is a major problem with garbage collection. Sixth: due to the lease law of 2012, most historical/old shops are closed due to high rents. Hope this helps. Cheers.

The decline in western civilization is evidenced worldwide. I spent a few days in Lisbon when I was a 3rd year university student in Seville, Spain in 1973 and it was beautiful and relatively inexpensive. I hitchhiked around southern Spain and Portugal for a week staying at cheap hostels and everyone I met was wonderful.

They kicked me and my family, including an 87 year old lady, out of our home in lisbon because the government changed the laws in order to make it easier to sell real estate to foreigners. It's a combination of different but very destructive policies that are putting pressure on cities and lowering the standard of living for Portuguese people (in this particular case) and most Europeans. gentrification happened to my city, I almost don't recognize some of the more emblematic streets. It's impossible for the common portuguese 'mortal' to live in Lisbon. Our council taxes are too high for pensioners with the cost of living impact added to it all. Its an unfair world which favours those who have invested in air b snd b over and over and are big shareholding companies pushing locals out of homes by keeping house prices artificially high from investing and bulk purchasing those former homes! Many properties sit empty as they are portfolio stock only, passing hands through the few with reasonably prices options for homes denied to many. You are in a lifetimes debt from the outset, which you are compromised to struggle to pay alongside everything else.

My heart is breaking right now. I was born in Lisbon 62 yrs ago. My family came to Canada when I was a baby , but we went back every other year for 2 months. My family is from Monte Estoril, not far from Lisbon. I do not believe my eyes, to what this once great city has become. There was NEVER any graffiti or garbage strewn about:( My daughter moved to Lisbon 2 yrs ago and is living there, cannot see what she sees in it to be honest. I know things change, but the city has gone really down hill. I hope they manage to bring it back to what it once was. We always had some immigration from Mozambique especially , but never to this extent. I wish I knew what caused this decay and downward trend. Shame, such a shame. I have no yen to visit.

I'm portuguese and I've been studying, working and living in Lisbon since 2004. I can absolutely guarantee you that it's a completely different place. I don't recognize it anymore, I don't enjoy it frankly, and allot of the country is in similar state. We are quickly losing our identity, our culture, our language, our houses, our rights, our security...everything. Absolutely devastated to see my country in the state it is nowadays.

Lisbon is becoming a 2 class society. The ones who can afford the crazy high rent and expensive condos and the homeless. The graffiti for me is always a red flag, I find it correlates with the level of incompetence of the people who run the city.

Didn't the Mayor of New York enact a law that cleaned the city up? I think it was called "the broken window" policy. Broken windows indicated neglect which attracted crime. Flooded the place with cops. Small demeanors were punished and eventually the place was reconstructed and cleaned up which in turn attracted people back in to spend money. Of course that was America where somtimes a short acting "local and benign dictatorship" can do wonders. Unfortunately Europe has had a bad time in the last century and is allergic to dictators, even benign ones. So nothing will get done.
So where are the illegals living, have the politicians put them in hotels while native people are homeless like the uk politicians have done.
The cost of living has reduced consumption and demand. Like the old guy said, tourism increased dramatically after covid, mainly due to the cheap avaialbility of property, foreign buyers drove the price up beyond the reach of locals. It's a situation which has been repeated in many european cities.
You didn't have to go to Portugal to find towns with no shops left, you just need to come to Wellington in Shropshire. All we have left are Charity Shops and cafes

As an American who traveled to the European side of Russia, things are quite different... as in better than the EU Europe. So stop saying Europe and say EU. That was the failure. I'm lucky I'm old enough to have seen a Europe without an EU, and it was beautiful.

About the "closed shops" - In Portugal there's a well-known phenomena of abandoned buildings. When you move here you see them everywhere, there's almost a million of them. It's a complex topic, it has to do with aging population, poor construction, culture, economics, absurd rent laws, inheritance and many other factors. But the bottom line is that Portugal has I think the highest rate of dilapidated buildings in Europe. And because they've been abandoned for a long time, they gradually deteriorate until it's not viable to renovate them. In many the roof had collapsed, but you can't see it from the street.
The result is that even in Lisbon and Porto center you'll see many closed entrances. These are not closed businesses per-se, they might have been closed for 20 years or more.
Lisbon has become dirty and inundated with tourists and everything that comes with that. Many Portuguese don't go there anymore. For myself as well, I find other parts of Portugal and I only go to Lisbon for specific occasions. I didn't realise the drug issue was so bad until I saw your video. Thanks

First of all, I would like to thank this English couple for this very illuminating video of the state of degradation that many areas of Lisbon have reached. Even areas of the historic center so often visited by me where there were shops and warehouses buzzing with activity, are now closed doors and gates or shop windows all covered with paper with graffiti scraps that follow each other in an endless Indian line. It's like seeing areas of accumulation of rubbish and the remains of homeless people spread across the city, denigrating the image of old Lisbon so well portrayed in Portuguese fado. It's seeing non-Portuguese people wandering around aimlessly because they don't fit in anywhere because they simply aren't working anywhere!

As a lisboeta I can say the following: First: those people in "baixa" are not selling real drugs. It's a tourism scam and that's why no police goes after them. They only went after you because of the filming. Second: you did not venture into any dangerous place as far as I could see, the corner you crossed and came down again (near the Palace of Independence) actually goes into a very nice area called Colina de Santana where Amália was born and Camões lived. Third: we have always had a graffiti problem since the eighties - and yes it's a real shame and our culture seems not to have changed that much -. Fourth: the construction is because of a new drainage system to prevent flooding in winter time . Fifth: we currently have the worst Mayor since the last thirty years and there is a major problem with garbage collection. Sixth: due to the lease law of 2012, most historical/old shops are closed due to high rents. Hope this helps. Cheers.

The decline in western civilization is evidenced worldwide. I spent a few days in Lisbon when I was a 3rd year university student in Seville, Spain in 1973 and it was beautiful and relatively inexpensive. I hitchhiked around southern Spain and Portugal for a week staying at cheap hostels and everyone I met was wonderful.
