@@AgrippaMaxentius get a better job? I'm portuguese living in the UK as well. You cant really rent on your own in the UK as well if you're just doing a minimum wage job like working restaurants or cleaning. If you want a better life you need to make more money - study, improve yourself, make yourself worth something. That's the same everywhere in the world.
Dear Rick and Vicky, thank you for your video and kindness. As a Portuguese, I am humbled by your honest view of my country. God knows we are far from perfect, and many things in Portugal 🇵🇹 need to improve, however, which country is perfect?! We are trying, and will never give up trying for this country needs to continue alive. Still we know we need to change in many ways, and hopefully, the arrival of new residents such as yourselves, will help us make this little/big country better for all. Hence, why it is so important you learn Portuguese. Not just to improve your daily comings and goings, but to teach many other things, such as instill in some the fact that animals should not be chained all day! 🙈😩 . To be honest, some do it to protect other lives as maybe the animal is aggressive or anti social, but so are many humans, yet we not chain them, do we? 😱 As for the insanely hot weather in Summer, yeah, I hate it too, but the key is to enjoy the many local fluvial rivers and take a break in the afternoon. To take it easy here means exactly that, so stay away from the sun from 1pm to 3pm, have a leisure lunch, get a snooze and it will get better. As for shopping, well... it has gotten expensive and variety here is limited but for a 10 million big (give or take) nation, there can only be so much diversity in products, or businesses just go under with unsold inventory. For celiac issues, I would attempt buying appropriate products online, or by shopping at a larger nearby town once a month, and also buying in bulk. Thank you for having chosen 🇵🇹. We hope we never let you down. 🙏🤗❤️🇵🇹
Thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement. It’s reassuring to hear a native person say they struggle with the summer weather too! 😁 No river beach near us unfortunately but we do have a big water tank to dip in 💦 Tenha uma semana fantástica! ❤️
What a wonderful post. You can tell the OP has a love for her country and welcomes and appreciates people moving there--a very non-prejudiced thing to say, don’t you think?
damn it, you made me release several tears hearing so many goods things about my country. glad you feel welcomed here. and thank you for making an effort to learn our language. we feel incredible happy every time some foreigner honor us by speaking our language, even if just a couple of words.
We should be happy to welcome turists. But after vacation is Good to go back home... Portugal is a small country with limited sources and we can't accept massive immigration. Also the severe drought continues for several years already... Not only Portugal but also other countries around the Mediterranean.. 2022 summer fires were a huge desastre.. Homes burn down, animals, and people died intoxicated. ALL this nobody is telling the public... But it's true the situation is not going to get better..but worse... Be wise , don't move in. No water ...no life.
An interesting and insightful view of moving to Portugal. Sometimes I suspect that there is an underground campaign among the stray dogs to adopt a foreign couple who move there, all the while making them believe that the people adopted the dog and not vice versa.
The number of injuries from dog bites has been increasing. Between 1998 and 2018, hospital admissions for dog-related injuries doubled in England, with about 8,000 people admitted each year. At Alder Hey children’s hospital in Liverpool, the number of children attending A&E for dog bites tripled during the first Covid lockdown. More alarmingly, this year will be the worst for dog-related deaths! So the last thing we want in Portugal is to take your advise about how to take care of dogs or other animals!I absolutely agreed with what you said in this vlog but on the other hand I'm not saying that we are perfect here Portugal far from it, your love for animals well been in UK is death wish!Very sad to comprehend how many more baby's and humans need to die for your government to put a End to this madness!Just any observation from a Portuguese who absolutely loves UK!

@@Quidproquo1143 . What utter garbage you have written. Are you sure you are not Spanish, pretending to be Portuguese. Was there any need for such insults as written in your reply. Whilst my comment was critical, it was not insulting, and certainly not "personally insulting" towards anyone, as your comment was towards me. Fortunately for me you do not control who can or can not move to Portugal, and quite frankly I would not be mixing with people of your calibre anyway. I also suggest that rather than playing the keyboard warrior, if you feel the need to insult people on a personal level, you do so face to face!
@@markuslucidus I didn't insult you, to tell the truth, I think I was very moderate... If you think you've found a country where you can insult or discredit anyone without a problem, think again! And you feel so brave, I have no problem meeting you face to face, and yes, I'm Portuguese. Come to Setúbal and send me a message.
@@Quidproquo1143 rather than debunk my original message as false, or even inaccurate, your comments have demonstrated exactly that what I have stated is both true and accurate. I was critical of the abundant and "severe" animal cruelty that goes on in Spain, and the fact that when that criticism is voiced, it will often be met by insults and the statement, "that if you don't like it here go back to your own country". How was your comment different to that? You made personal insults against me (maybe you should read your original reply again, or at least refer to the English translation version which was indeed insulting) and you also stated that "you hope I do not move to Portugal", thus you presented an actual "real life" demonstration that my criticism and statements are in fact true. Have you even considered that instead of burying your head in the sand, if people stopped living in denial, they might have a remote chance of finding a solution to what is one of the ugliest and most shameful aspects (animal cruelty) regarding Spain "and possibly Portugal". Incidentally Spain "allegedly" also has the extra embarrassment of a severe domestic violence problem. At this stage I can not comment with any authority on the situation regarding domestic violence in Portugal. Sticking to the topic of animal cruelty; there is no excuse for deliberate animal cruelty in any country claiming to be civilised! Regarding the rest of the garbage you wrote; one of us is clearly out of mind. I advised you to cease being a keyboard warrior, however rather than heed my advise, you not only continue your absurd behaviour, but intensify it. Do you really expect me to go running to where ever you state you are??? I am guessing from what you have written that you are either very young, or of low intelligence, or both. If you really have such a problem with me, I will oblige you, however if that is your desire, you come to me. Is that really what you want??? There is a saying in English "Be careful what you wish for!" Having said that; I do not see any point in continuing such a ridiculous conversation. Period!
It is a pleasure to listen to you! You know why you will make it in Portugal? You have the "brandos costumes", this special kind of politeness the Potuguese people are known for. Greatings from Mafra/ Portugal from an expat from Germany

Really happy for you and glad you would do it all over again. I’ve moved from Portugal to the UK almost 5 years now and it’s great to see the opposite perspective. Portugal is a great country and we’re very fortunate to have people like you that bring energy and change into areas that are somewhat neglected by the government. Hope more people follow your lead and help make Portugal an even better place!
As a native Portuguese living in my country, it’s wonderful to watch a video like this one. It’s true that we have many issues to face and change, but it really is a beautiful and fantastic country. It’s lovely to see people like you coming here and wanting to help us fix some real problems and enjoy our country. We are a proudfull people, very welcoming in general, but especially to those wanting to integrate in our culture and participate in bettering our country. And good for you for choosing a rural area, they really need more young people to be able to go and stay there. I hope that, at the time of your viewing this comment, you are still enjoying living here. I will be checking some more of your videos.
How do you make a living? It heard jobs are not in abundance. This couple in the video don’t look like been retired and live on a pension. How do they earn money? Are they living just of. UA-cam? These are the things that interest me.

What a lovely tribute to your new country. A great summary of life in Portugal. I moved here (also central) from the UK 9 years ago and love it for all the reasons you've said. Wonderful people, wonderful country, wouldn't change it for the world.
I appreciate your effort for learning portuguese. Many English-speaking people do not attempt to speak the language of the country in which they live. Thanks for sharing your view and experiences!
@@AxeDharme When you say Yankees are you referring to New Yorkers or All Americans? A very appropriate change to your channel name, especially considering the content of this episode. Well done Victoria and Ricky! We’re leaving south central Canada (hour west of Toronto) for central Portugal for a few reasons similar to yours. The weather is most certainly an overall improvement. We’re so tired of winter snow and cold and ‘things’ are changing in our country as well. We really love the Portuguese culture, cuisine and as you both attest, the best is the friendliness of the people. We’re fortunate in our travels there that we have made some friendships with a number of locals. Lovely people! Thanks again for another uplifting episode. Cheers, Bryan

Tou a viver no norte, no distrito do Porto.
Great job on your Portuguese! I know quite a few foreigners who have lived in Portugal for longer than that before they could say a full sentence (let alone write one). You've also (nearly) mastered one of the most difficult aspects of Portuguese, the difference between the verbs "ser" and "estar" (by the way, although we pronounce "'tou bem" and "'tás a ver?", it's written "estou bem" and "estás a ver?"). Now, back to Portuguese.

What a weird feeling watching this video, as a born and raised Portuguese i can definetly understand the cons and the pros, but for some reason its a really sad feeling that we the youth feel like we have to move out of this amazing country to have a somewhat "fullfilling" life. Im happy people enjoy my country i just wished i could also feel like I could do my own life here, but sadly for me and for alot of the people around my age it just feels like imigration in the hopes of better jobs and quality of life is inevitable.

Hi H D. I'm Imani from Atlanta and my husband and I are considering coming to Portugal in June to explore and decide if it's someplace we can settle. My husband and I both retired. I've always wanted to have a 5th wheel or RV. How do you feel not knowing the area, language or roads manuvering, getting around in new country in an RV?
Welkom in Portugal, bem vindo a Portugal, welcome to Portugal. We did the same last year. Living in mid-mid Portugal now (area Côja). Good decision. Wij willen niet meer terug. We will never go back again.
Thanks for replying! I’m always surprised when I hear people comment on how much the like Portugal. What is it about the country that’s so appealing for you guys?
G. Imani Leonard, To be honest it is also the financial independence we have now. It is definitly also a reason we like it here. Prices of the houses in the Netherlands where rising skyhigh. On the best moment we sold our house there and bought a much cheaper house here. We still have to be carefull with money. You never know what can happen. But as it looks now we (59 yrs) can easely live here without working. But when you are younger it's another story I guess. To find work without speaking the language is not easy. You have to have a commercial mindsetting in advance to start your own business. A lot of people simply don't have that commercial instinct (and don't have money on the bank) and find out that they can hardly survive. In our area it's like a lot of foreighners try to earn money with yoga, massage, healing etc. But when everyone is trying to jump into the same business in a small group of potential customers...Some people don't mind to have luxery but at least you have to eat and pay all the basic needs.

I moved to central PT two years ago also, and grocery prices seemed embarrassingly cheap compared to California. We'd play a game guessing the total for a cart full of produce, meat, cheeses, beer and wine, pasta, sauces, etc., and we'd guess 400 when the actual total was 120. Those totals have been indeed creeping upwards over the past 10 months or so.

This is a great video with real personal experiences of moving to Portugal. Your video gives a good view of the reality. I also learned that, the inland is so beautiful. And indeed the Portuguese people are so welcoming, a mindset open to the world and helpful. This is so heartwarming and wonderful to see and feel. Indeed, they live in the moment. The last years, I also travelled many times to Portugal, learned the beautiful (yes not easy) language, culture, gastronomy and history. Also, I want to move someday to Portugal. My drive is the mindset of the locals, the way of living, a Saudade, the great food and a more relaxed culture with stil more respect for each other. People of South-Europe live together, not in their own house. In Portugal, you become rich through the connections with people around you, the wonderful untouched areas, quality of food, healthy and good air. One of my experiences so far also is when you want to live in a small village, aldeia, to live relaxed and not have much around you, you really can have almost nothing around you. Only the great locals and views. Even for larger supermarkets, shops or more restaurants it is better to have an own car and to drive a while. There is nothing wrong with it, it is part of the charm. But for people who come from a country/location where you have almost everything within reach in your own village-town-city-neighbourhood, it can be a huge change in mindset.
Great video. You cover all the bases in this and your other videos and come across so nicely. I have never been to Portugal but would like to. Re the language I did Latin French and Spanish at school and was surprised when I started Portuguese on Duolingo how difficult it seemed.

We are considering returning to Portugal in 3 or 4 years time once he retires and wondering if we will fit in with the Portuguese mentality and way of life again. Your videos and the videos of the other families make me feel good about returning. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
I am watching your videos for the 1st time and now I made the connection. Rick, I immediately recognized you from helping with Bee and Theo's barn project.😊😊😊. Also, I am so proud of your Portuguese Rick. You really speak very well. Keep up the good work. You are right. In central Portugal very few people speak English. And let's face it. I am of the firm opinion that IF/WHEN one decides to immigrate, one needs to immerse himself/herself in the language and culture of the country they choose to immigrate to. 🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹
hey, thanks so much for sharing - very happy to have found your channel. My husband is British as well (I'm German), and we live up North in a remote mountain village with our 3 dogs. Keep up the great work!
We have similar positive vibes from friends and neighbours in the small village in Germany where we will move to next year after finishing doing up our house there. Good luck with your new life
Thanks ,thanks! You are so kind and humble!! I would love to be your neighbor. I began watching your videos because I can understand everything you said without subtitles!! My nature language is Spanish, I'm from Mendoza, Argentina. I hope you have the best time in Portugal!!
Amazing video, gets us happy. I'm portuguese, I've been to the UK, after a short while there we really start missing the sun, the energy of the people, the bread xD. Sorry brits but it's a fact, this country is the best, no weird storms, safe, great weather and good food. Lots of beautiful places to see.
Welcome to my country, Rick and Vicky!!! Thanks for your kindness!! There are celiac products in the big supermarkts like Continente and in some shops as Celeiro in the big cities. 👋👍

Lovely feedback❤️
Thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement. It’s reassuring to hear a native person say they struggle with the summer weather too! 😁 No river beach near us unfortunately but we do have a big water tank to dip in 💦 Tenha uma semana fantástica! ❤️
Thanks for being welcoming. It goes a long way to making the world better.
What a wonderful post. You can tell the OP has a love for her country and welcomes and appreciates people moving there--a very non-prejudiced thing to say, don’t you think?
I dream of seeing Portugal
damn it, you made me release several tears hearing so many goods things about my country.
glad you feel welcomed here. and thank you for making an effort to learn our language. we feel incredible happy every time some foreigner honor us by speaking our language, even if just a couple of words.
😂
Keep that campaign flourishing.
So funny! Animals have a keen sense of energy😉

@@meucanal1197 Because I live in Portugal and my wife is from Rio de Janeiro.

I will say that I am jealous of your terrain and the country side. 🧐 perhaps a trip to Portugal is in the near future.
We have been in Portugal for over two years and we find the people where we live so incredibly friendly! We too have found, eggs, sausages and half a chicken hanging on our fence! The locals are amazing and have made us so welcome. We LOVE Portugal, the people, the pace of life and definitely the low crime rate.
Thank you for the lovely words about my beautiful 🇵🇹.
I love Portugal as a tourist, and it's great to hear your views on living there permanently. Loving the new channel name as well.
Those totals have been indeed creeping upwards over the past 10 months or so.
world wide inflation, individual countries cant do anything about it when their scale tips more towards imports rather than exports

The way Poppy looked at her.
Thank you so much Ricky and Victoria for sharing this video. You both are great people. Very respectful, kind hearted. Lots more. I love you both very much. I like the content that you are sharing. Your perspective of how life is in the rural Portugal. Love and Blessings.

Perhaps one day you can show us around your local town where you do your food shopping?
This so warms my heart! My family emigrated from Portugal when I was young (menina). I miss it so much. Thank you for sharing.
Definitely a tricky language but I think once we master it it’ll be incredibly rewarding 🙂
Hi Ricky and Vicky. Many thanks for your wonderful video! My wife and I are considering very strongly to retire in this lovely and great country. We’re gathering information about the requirements, as US citizens, to move there. I love very much the option of living in the countryside. Best wishes. Greetings from Puerto Rico.
How have I not seen this before! This is fascinating! We’ve travelled slowly through Portugal 3 times in our campervan and absolutely love it. I’m trying to convince my wife to look into moving there, this may help 😁 our main concern is that we home school our two girls atm (and have elderly mothers we help care for) but this is a great video - THANK YOU! Right going to check your channel and have subscribed 👌👍
A very honest and realistic assessment of your new life, that matches our similar experience of many years living in Italy and before that, France. I applaud your progress with the language - it's vital for experiencing life to the full in your new country.
Thank you for giving youre vision of living abroad. You both were very honest and I heard/saw other people who came to Portugal the same words. They all fell in love with the nature and the people of Portugal.I follow the Newbys, who also live in Portugal, the say the same words.
Thank you so much for this video. You are such gentle, thoughtful people. We are planning to move to Portugal in a few years and I hope we will get the chance to meet you one day. And your dogs 😊
You are doing so good with your Portuguese I left the Açores 43 years ago and I spoke Portuguese of course French and English but like you said the older population only speak Portuguese you guys are awsome 🙏♥️
Such a kind couple. Poppy is so sweet.,Her beautiful face just swoons when looking at you two❤ Good channel!
Lovely update guys 👍🇬🇧 Keep ‘em coming.
Cheers Addie 👍🏼
A refreshing insight into how you view your new home...😊
Another great vlog, very interesting hearing a bit more of your background too.
You two are very kind and grateful. Hope we won’t disappoint you 🥰
Thank you so much for all your delightful videos, love you both (& the dogs)
Good video. You are enjoying life! That is what it's all about! 🇨🇦
Thanks for these enjoyable videos.
I have been living in Portugal now for some 40 years and I always have said that the slower pace of life has been at the top of my list.
One thing you didn't mention is that being in Portugal you are never too far away from the UK, so if plans go awry you can always hop back.
Nicely presented clear audio great camera work and first rate assessments of Portugal .I live in Canada and love the Portuguese people I always try to live in a portuguese neighbourhood whether in Vancouver or Toronto which have large- mostly from the Azores- communities .In any event I think the two of you would do well anywhere .So thanks and may you prosper.
Ricky & Victoria, we love you! Thank you for your sharing.
I really enjoyed this video and your realistic view of Portugal 🇵🇹 I grew up in Portugal but am now living in the UK. Please keep being a good example in terms of looking after the animals,a lot of it comes from ignorance. Things have improved a lot and I hope they continue to do so. I’m so glad Poppy has found you.
An honest review of my beautiful country 🇵🇹 (currently living in South Africa) Thank you for sharing your experiences ❤️🙏🏻
Hi Rick and Vicky. Thank you for an interesting video. I am enjoying following your journey in settling to life there and making your home.
Myself and my husband are now in our 60s and would not think about moving from the UK. However, I think that if we were younger we would definitely look to Portugal as a country to settle in.
Your video has brought out some great comments from people which are lovely to read. Thank you for bringing your world to ours, so to speak 🙂
Look forward to the next instalment xx
Portugal is an amazing country. People are very kind and polite. I must say your Português is amazing. God bless you. I really think that I will go to Portugal very soon. I am looking for a place. Thank you for sharing. I love your place . I would move there for sure.
Like the new channel name! Seems perfect for you both
Thanks Christine 😊
Love watching your videos. You remind us a little of when we first started here 12 years ago, just across the border from Portugal in Extremadura, Spain.
Hello from Australia. I've been following you for a while, plus the Newbies family and two other English couples who all live in rural Portugal. We are both Portuguese, but not born in Portugal, we only lived in Portugal for 12 years, before moving to Australia 16 years ago for my husband's work.
Thank you for sharing this informative video. Good to see you are both well and enjoying your life in Portugal. Take care. Best wishes from the UK.
